How can anyone not have heard the original version of this song? :-)A huge hit for ABBA in 1975, and of course it had a stage and movie musical named after it (and that included it).On closer inspection it is even more brilliant than at first listen. Most tracks have just two musically distinct parts (such as verse and chorus), but "Mamma Mia" has about half a dozen - all depicting the different crazy states of mind of an on-again, off-again relationship.The unusual sound at the start of the song is the marimba - a brilliant choice that includes an out-of-key note to really heighten the zany emotions.As with many remixes, my goal was to make the track a little more danceable and up-to-date, but hopefully still keeping the spirit of the original with its many musical flourishes."Free Download" button downloads an mp3 of the extended mix. My progressive take on a 70s disco classic!"Car Wash" reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1977 (why do I remember it being longer?)Like so many I have a huge affection for hits from this era. Perhaps it looms larger to me than it really was.I've had the opportunity doing this rework to listen to the original over and over - it sounds like a bit of fluff on a casual listen, but I really think now on closer inspection it's a bit of genius.Has anyone seen the movie? Would you recommend it? I gather it was not a hit but that it has gained a cult following!

I decided to go in a completely different direction than the original version of this track - a really moody, progressive/tribal sound.The original of this track (you can hear it on YouTube) is absolutely superb - I didn't feel the need to reinvent the wheel. The original has a slightly retro, melodic trance feel. Definitely check it out too (after listening to this version!) :-)
Yes, this really is the theme song from the 2001-2005 show, "Star Trek: Enterprise". :-)Originally performed by Rod Stewart as "Faith of the Heart", it's a track that people seem to either love or hate.While obviously I love it (or I would not have spent so much time with it!), I see the other side's point: the arrangement for the two Star Trek versions is perhaps overly sentimental.I felt that the strong lyrics would benefit from a rework to give them a more resolute and determined tone.If you would like a WAV version, just ask :-)- hugmonster

I'm a LeAnn Rimes fanboy - I admit it. But with a career spanning more than a quarter century, and covering multiple genres, what's not to like?On top of that, she's often paired with the most superb remixers - Dave Audé, Cahill, Graham Stack - with happy results.The focus in this mix is LeAnn Rimes, but I've avoided her big hits and chosen to lean into her neglected gems (of which there are many!). I've interleaved her tracks with other artists in the same style. The result is a bit of a musical poem. I hope that it rhymes. :-)Looking over the completed mix, I see that it has a definite mood, with the final two tracks comprising a call and response. The world is complicated right now, and the days are getting longer in the northern hemisphere. For my September 2023 mix, I've got happy (or dare I say, "transcendent"?) vocals.
"I'm taking it to the next level." "I'm stepping it up." "Becoming a better version of myself." Most of us - at least sometimes - want to experience growth, and often not the gradual kind.
We start our journey with our feet firmly on the ground with the incomparable "Husavik (My Hometown)", and end up in the clouds with Paul Goodyear's amazing remix of "Heaven".
In between, we ascend in various ways - some literal, like "100 degrees", but usually figuratively, such as with "Sacred", "Love My Life", "Euphoria", and "Life Love and Happiness".
This transcendence, however joyful, isn't always free, as in "Tattoo" and "Butterfly" - sometimes we have to let go of people, even pieces of ourselves, to make the leap up.
My wish for all of us this month is that we remember most of us are trying our best. Even if that best doesn't sometimes look all that good. 🙂

July was a wonderful month for many of us. Wonderful, exciting, but also emotional, overwhelming...maybe even perplexing at times.
So I've taken a step back here. Still a happy sound, still a great beat, but a bit more thoughtful, relaxed. Not evoking a perfect day...perhaps just a good day. Good days are underrated! 🙂

Three tracks: Track A has samples from tracks B and C, followed by track B, with samples from track C.
I was introduced to track A ("Polar Bears") by DJ Brian Norwood. This track is complete and utter genius - I can't imagine coming up with it myself, it is so unique (and wonderful).
I got track B ("Amazing") from DJ Michael Rackley. It helped get me through the pandemic and never fails to put me in a good mood and restore my faith in the world.
And track C ("Love Is In The Air")....I mean, c'mon. Complete classic!
If you are wondering why these tracks, put together in this way...all I can say is, it is supposed to sound like this. :-)

I was telling DJ Michael Rackley that I wanted to make a Pride Month mix - but that somehow I wanted to put a new spin on the concept, a new twist. From that vague thought and him hearing me out, a week later, I have a new mix.It starts with a few clouds, but by the third track, they blow away and the sun comes out. I've been doing this for 6 months now, and I've been surprised to find out how personal it is.There are endless ways to make a set. What theme? What concept? Is this track a great one, or merely a good one? Where do I place a transition? Do I make this sort of transition, or that sort? Which track next?In the end, I finish, and (hopefully) I feel that it is just the way it should be - and no one else would make something exactly the same. I've realized now that when I listen to a DJ, I'm hearing who they are - because nobody else would make it precisely that way.----I've called this mix 'Funkytown'. Perhaps some of you remember this 1980 song - it was one of my favorites in high school! How can you go wrong with this track? It's like three songs in one, and I love that cowbell intro! It gets worked into this mix as track 10, 'Superfly' (which is a mashup of 'Funkytown' and the 666 track, 'Supa-Dupa-Fly').I lead off with a gorgeous remake of 'I'll Be Around', and after that, it's nothing high-minded - just a lot of funky disco goodness.I wrap up with a remix I made of 'Sunset' with 'She's Got It (Venus)'. This mix is mostly in the organic house category, but it also takes you on a bit of a journey: first clouds, then some sunshine, and finally ending up in a completely different place than the beginning.My favorite track is the title track ("Andaluz Human") with the lyric, "I am only human, too."
