Hello, and welcome to the Natural Birth Co. podcast. I am so excited to bring you this amazing episode with the one and only Sheridan Joy Austin, who, after going through her own health stuff in her early twenties and teens, went on to become a nutritionist and then went on to become a Gut & Psychology Syndrome Practitioner.

After being in the health and nutrition space for nearly 10 years and working with clients with an array of gut health, immune, hormonal issues and more, in 2017 she became pregnant with her precious little boy Malakai. It was throughout that pregnancy that she became overwhelmingly passionate about how to nourish her growing baby and herself through such a physically demanding time.

As a nutritionist and GAPS practitioner - she couldn't find the quality we all deserve, free from synthetic nutrients, flavours, fillers and emulsifiers, 100% certified organic, and the most nutritious foods on the planet.

So, she went on to create her company foraged for you, which has the mother's blend which is absolutely amazing for mamas and humans in general. (I take the mother's blend, and all of our NBC mamas take it too).

In this episode we discuss:

  • Sheridan’s Birth Stories for her two baby boys
  • Nutrition advice for the preconception phase (for both mom and dad)
  • Nutrition advice for the pregnancy
  • Nutrition advice for postpartum

This podcast is for:

  • Any mamas or mamas-to-be who are interested in nutrition
  • Mamas who enjoy a good birth story
  • Health conscious mamas

Welcome to the latest episode of the NBC podcast! Today, I caught up with Nat Saunders, who you might remember from her first birth story (Ep 41). Back then, Nat shared her experience of a natural posterior birth, resonating deeply with countless mamas out there.

Now, nearly nine months later, Nat returns with her adorable nine-month-old, Winnie, in the background, ready to share the journey of her second pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period. Expect the unexpected, as Nat's second experience proves to be remarkably different from her first – which is actually super common for second-time mamas!

In this episode, Nat delves into the three key changes she aimed for this time around: strengthening her pelvic floor, minimising pelvic girdle pain, and optimising her baby's position. Whether it was avoiding another posterior birth or ensuring a smoother labour process, Nat's insights and tips are invaluable for anyone embarking on their own pregnancy journey.

Now, I’m not about to spoil whether Nat achieved her ideal birth outcome or not - you'll have to tune in to find out! But trust me, Nat's wisdom, warmth, and wit make this episode an absolute must-listen.

In this podcast we discuss:

  • How to avoid pelvic girdle pain- particularly when you are susceptible to it
  • How to get back to exercise ASAP postpartum
  • How to prevent pelvic floor injury, and recover from pelvic floor injury postpartum
  • How to avoid a posterior birth second time around!
  • How to create space in the uterus for your babe to be in the optimal position
  • Mothering with 2
  • Transitioning to solids

This podcast is for you if:

  • You have had a posterior birth or want to do everything you can do avoid one
  • You have experienced pelvic girdle pain
  • You love a good birth story
  • You want to know what intuitive birthing looks like

Today, we're catching up with Gracie in our Journey of Pregnancy series (now at the 38-week mark), and we're diving deep into the physical changes that happen in the body before birth. From cervical developments to those magical baby movements, and that's not all…

Gracie opens up about something many expecting mothers might relate to: the sudden appearance of the "motherhood wound" as she gears up to transition into motherhood herself.

Plus, we'll take you along for the ride as we navigate:

  • CTG's and a slightly nerve-wracking hospital scare
  • Surrendering to the uncertainty and unknown of spontaneous labour for first time mamas
  • Sex in later pregnancy
  • The difference between baby showers and mothers blessings

This podcast is for you if:

  • You’re a first time mama and desire some inspiration, guidance, or relation to another pregnancy.
  • You are preconception, wanting to have a baby at some stage in future, and have no idea what to actually do when that happens.
  • You are early in your pregnancy and desire some guidance on the right steps to make for your pregnancy journey with an interest towards natural birth.

Welcome to the Natural Birth Code Podcast! So excited to have you here, ready to dive into some real talk about birth experiences. Today, I am absolutely stoked to introduce you to Jacque. Trust me, you're gonna adore her. She's an NBC mama who's been through the whole shebang – yoga, birth workshops, you name it. And now, seven months post-birth, she's here to share her journey.

Get ready, because Jacque's story is a game-changer. We're talking about her experience with an epidural, and let me tell you, it's not your typical tale. See, we often have these preconceived notions about what's "good" or "bad" when it comes to birth preferences. But Jacque's here to flip that script. She embraced the unexpected, and her positive attitude toward her epidural is seriously inspiring.

You know, it's all about facing those fears head-on. We've all been there, sweating bullets over what might go wrong. But when you shine a light on those worries and give 'em a name, they lose their power. Jacque did just that, and her journey shows us that sometimes, the scariest thing on paper turns out to be a blessing in disguise.

So, get ready for some major inspiration – this is one podcast episode you won't wanna miss!

In this podcast we discuss:

  • Conception with a sperm donor
  • The importance of a support network
  • Pregnancy preparation for birth
  • How to have a positive birth experience where you are in control WITH an epidural
  • Single parenting
  • The importance of trusting in your intuition, and having confidence during your labour and birth experience

This podcast is for:

  • The woman who can’t handle the thought of their birth going not to plan
  • The woman wildly scared of getting the epidural
  • The single mamas
  • Mama who has difficulty in trusting and listening to their intuition- where does it even come from?
  • Mamas who feel that because they haven’t birthed before they have no idea what to expect
  • The Mamas who love a good birth story

This is our new Podcast series going through a journey of pregnancy with one of my dearest girlfriends Gracie. At the time of recording this podcast Gracie is 16 weeks pregnancy with her first babe and definitely gunning for a natural vagina birth

Gracie is going through the Natural Birth Co experience of preparing the 3 main aspects for a wholistic approach to birth. Mental preparation, Physical preparation, and Birth partner Preparation.

Our NBC mamas often talk about how overwhelming it is falling pregnant, how unsure they are on the steps to take, how much it is to take in and are overwhelmed with the decisions. This series will take you step by step through a woman’s journey of pregnancy where every single month she will discuss what she learnt, how she feels, what is happening with her mental state, and how she acted towards making decisions.

Usually we would ideally start our Pregnancy classes including pregnancy specific yoga and pilates at 12-14 weeks however, (as you will hear on the podcast) Gracie has just moved back from Western Aus, so we are a little behind the 8 ball and which we can absolutely adapt and be flexible around and catch up because that what we do- Tailored pregnancy preparation around your individual circumstances.

In today’s podcast we discuss:

  • How Gracie navigates mental challenges with her changing pregnant body and a history of eating disorders which has been triggering.
  • How Gracie is making her decisions regarding which form of care she desires for her pregnancy and birth, how she is researching this and how she is gaining support
  • Cleaning up the mental ‘Girl stuff’ as Gracie calls it- to be the mother and role model she desires for her child
  • How she is opening up conversation with her partner already about pregnancy and birth desires
  • How her exercise routine has changed immensely through pregnancy- and bringing acceptance to that
  • How to navigate having people close to you who have different beliefs about birth that you don’t want to adopt

  • You have people in your support circle who hold different beliefs for what you desire for your birth

So this is a new series we are doing which I am SO excited about. We are going to do a journey through a newly pregnant woman's life, how she felt, how she went about choosing her care options, and how she decided to prepare for birth. The logical steps through a pregnancy, the spiritual growth throughout a pregnancy, and the mental preparation, to embark onto her birth and motherhood journey.

It is with my greatest delight for the first of these series to be with one of my close girlfriends Gracie Purvis. Gracie is currently pregnant with her first babe and int he time of recording this podcast is 11 weeks.

In today’s podcast we discuss:

  • Gracies journey Pre pregnancy in her own personal growth- not that her pregnancy was necessarily logically ‘planned’ but her spirit knew it was coming
  • Gracie’s initial conditioned response falling pregnant was, ‘I’m scared of birth- I’ll just have a C-section’, to an instant shift with the right support people around her to then desire a natural birth and have full belief in her body to birth (In just 5 short weeks- it doesn’t take long once you decide)
  • How Gracie has been working through the changes in her body and moving through old patterns and beliefs that have shown up
  • How Gracie chose her method of care for pregnancy- We discuss all the care options.
  • How pregnancy has made gracie question who she wants to be, the type of mother she wants to be, to allow her to grow and transform

Today’s Birth story was with one of our NBC mamas Sam. Sam has been such a delight to have in NBC throughout her entire preganncy and start into motherhood. Sam is a perfect example of fully embodying and relishing in her pregnancy, dedication to her birth preparation, and an open mind to shift her bliefes and perspective on pain and birth. Sam truely acted on one of our main mottos in NBC- Control what we can control which is a birth preparation and decision making, and surrender to what we cannot control- The outcome. Sam and her husband truely felt this throughout their pregnancy which eventuated into a powerful, confident, connecting birth experience for them.

In todays podcast we discuss:

  • How Sam shifted her initial perspective of birth from ‘Just cut it out fo me!’ to ‘I can do this and I’ve got this naturally’
  • How Sam prepared for her epic Natural Birth experience
  • How she priorities her birth preparation even though busy working full time, and all the things
  • How she coped in labour and her partners role during labour
  • How she has transitioned so fluidly inot her own version of a mama- not being afraid to be self aware, break the norms, and prioiritse herself while prioritising her baby.
  • How she and her husband both have key roles in the household and with parenting, and how she has full trust in him and his ability which allows her to prioritise herself (a common conversation between myself and our NBC mamas)

This podcast is for you if:

  • Your a first time mamas wanting to feel empowered during pregnancy and birth and wanting to hear how to take full responsibility of your decision making
  • You have some negative beliefs towards birth and want to rewrite them
  • You have a fear that motherhood will completely change your life, and you will loose yourself through the process, and how exactly to avoid that
  • You are wanting to prioritise your birth prep but are struggling to manage the time
  • You are struggling to prioritise yourself as a mother and feel ‘trapped’
  • You are struggling to trust your partner in looking after abbe while you live your best life in the best of both worlds- getting to be a mama loving your baby AND still getting to exercise, see friends and have alone time

Amy and her husband both come from medical backgrounds- this is super evident in their pregnancy and birth as they are completely aware and researched amongst all of their decisions. Today’s Birth story was with one of our NBC mamas Kodi. Kodi is an amazing example of holding the delicate balance of holding on tight to what you can control and accepting and releaseing what you can’t control. I have absolutely loved watching Kodi play with this balance throughout both of her pregnancies. Kodi started with NBC in her first pregnancy doing regular yoga and the Body Balance workshop with her husband Jack. She then continued to have an amazing birth starting off with an induction and progressing to a normal vaginal birth. Her second pregnancy Kodi practised yoga and pilates from 20 weeks and did the ‘How to Cope with Pain in Labour’ workshop (A segment of our Appetence Active Birth Workshop) to ‘get her head back in the game’ of coping with intense sensation. She then went ont o have a completely natural vaginal birth with no induction. I absolutely loved discussing the comparison of the 2 with her as this is such a rare experience and contrast to have.

In todays podcast we discuss:

  • How to have a successful induction
  • How she prepare for a natural birth experience
  • How she endured the intensity of an induction
  • Her fears toward birth how she overcame them
  • The comparison of a water birth and non water birth
  • How Kodi being so intune with her body help guide her to her 2 normal birth experiences
  • Lots of techniques on How to cope with pain in labour

This podcast is for you if:

  • Your a first time mamas wanting to feel empowered during pregnancy and birth
  • You have lots of fear surrounding an induction and feel it is ‘worst case scenario’
  • You want to feel more intune with your body and trust in your intuition

Today I dive deep into VBAC’s, the different types and how we can prepare depending on WHY the C-section happened in the first place.

In todays podcast we discuss how to prepare with previous C-sections being due to:

  • Placenta Previa
  • Breech
  • Did your labour never start…. Leading to induction….. Leading to a cascade of intervention (including the epidural)
  • Did labour start and was going fine and within 10(ish) hrs ‘something’ happened to make you go for an emergency c-section
  • Labour was 24hrs+ leading to a c-section due to baby not moving down (obstructed labour) cervix not opening (Failure to Progress)- This may or may not include babies head being in an awkward position in the pelvis (tilted to the side up looking up (de-flexed))
  • We also discuss the mental game behind VBAC’s and the process of rebuilding the trust in the body and the natural process of birth that has been lost, while the importance of learning how to surrender to what we cannot control.

This podcast is for you if:

  • You have had a C-section and wondering what happened?
  • You are pregnant with your second babe post C-section and are anywhere on the spectrum of aboslutely NOT going for a VBAC to a VBAC is the only option.
  • You are just interested in the topic (it is a bloody interesting one!)
  • You didn’t necessarily have a C-section with your first but you did have intervention and wanting to get some little tips for your next birth
  • You are pregannt with your first knowing you will have a C-section and already curious about your second birth and your options

Previously we discussed WHY some babies may be in a posterior position and when it is optimal for them and when it is not.

We also delved into how to avoid a non optimal positioned posterior baby.

This podcast we discuss how to labour with a optimally posterior positioned babe.

How to allow the labour to be fluid and how to utilise 2 primary forces to help baby to be born vaginally.

In todays podcast we discuss:

  • How to know if your babe is posteriour
  • How to utilise the force of gravity to help baby rotate to an anterior position
  • How to create space in the pelvis for baby for baby to be able to not only rotate but descend in the pelvis for labour
  • How posterior labour work
  • Common contraction patterns and sensation of posterior labours that are VARIATIONS OF NORMAL rather than ‘complications’

This is for mamas who

  • Have a posterior baby on board and want to know how to have a vaginal posteriour birth
  • In the past have had a posteriour labour (or are skeptical of having a posterior labour) ad desire to reflect and learn about the experience
  • Mamas who are just curious to learn because the pregnant and birthing women is just so bloody fascinating!

I really hope you enjoy the podcast!

Monique is a legendary NBC mama who worked with me through a very special time of my business. Moniques birth story is incredibly powerful and reiterates one of the most valuable lessons in birth:

EMPOWERMENT IN BIRTH IS TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR EXPERIENCE, MAKING DECISIONS FROM A PLACE OF CONFIDENCE AND KNOWLEDGE.

Monique experienced a traumatic birth with her first child, left feeling guilty that she didn’t do more research pre birth, questioning why the health professionals did what they did, and why her birth ended as it did. Her second baby coming as a surprise acted as the ultimate healing experience for her and her partner.

I am so excited for you to delve into this podcast with us.

A few topics we discuss:

  • Birth preferences and vaginal exams
  • First baby- how it is so hard to know how imperative birth prep is
  • How to heal from birth trauma
  • What is the secret that we absolutely CAN control to avoid and recover from birth trauma
  • Big induction decisions with the risk factors of- Advanced maternal age (sorry for the terminology hehe) and insulin dependant diabetes

And because cervical exams are still very prominently used in the hospital setting, we discuss how they work, their signs of maturation and the volatile dilation patterns of the cervix!

Enjoy this goodie mamas!

I would love to hear from you what you learned or your experience with you own cervical dilation!

This month's birth story is an absolute cracker.

We start off discussing Ash's PCO (polycyctsic overies ), then her pregnancy journey comprising of Pregnancy Yoga and Body Balancing with Appetence, severe SPD and how Ash managed.

We then delve into her looong labour ending in an amazing water birth, the struggles she went through both mentally and physically in pregnancy and birth and her 4th trimester.

Rhiannon was an appetence mama who was so dedicated, consistent, and passionate about having a normal birth experience.

And boy were her efforts rewarded, with a beautiful Appetence stimulating birth.

She came to pregnancy yoga until term, did her body balance religiously every day, her partner did acupressure points and oxytocin stimulating tricks they learnt in the Appetence birth workshop, and they discerned their risk vs. benefit of getting an induction or not, holding out until she went into labour naturally at 41+6.

What I also really liked about Rhi's birth story was the postnatal adaption to mama life, how she navigated her way to her style of parenting, and her tips on how to maintain your independence from the start which is INCREDIBLY important for a mama's well being.

Jodi is a doula on the Sunshine Coast who originated from Maui Hawaii which is where she had her 2 natural home births including 1 posterior positioned baby.

Since moving to Aus she has also started her own organic tea production where it's not rare to find her homegrown roses in her tea blends and her local doula services that women just rave about.

Dan came onto the podcast to discuss her beautiful, calm, water birth experience of her first baby Parker.

Some interesting takeaways from this podcast, is to get super real with your self and your birth partner in what you expect from birth deep down and if that aligns with what you actually want from your birth experience. Its so important to sort out the subconscious beliefs about birth within us that have been created through years of media and other people stories.
