Sometimes we do our best as parents to raise healthy children. And sometimes their little bodies grow and develop in a way that may worry or concern us.
What happens when our kiddo's body carries extra weight?
What should we, as parents, do about it?
When should we be concerned, and when should we allow their body to naturally regulate?
How can we as parents set a healthy example for our children?
Sheila Carroll, MD is a board certified pediatrician and obesity medicine physician, a certified life and weight coach, and she's also a mom. Sheila works with parents of kids who are struggling with extra weight to help the parents create a healthy lifestyle (nutrition, sleep, movement, emotional wellbeing skills) so every member of the family can thrive.
In this episode, we discuss HOW we are parents can improve the overall health and wellbeing of everyone in the family versus focusing on the weight of the child.

Y'all, my mama, Carol, is pretty amazing. After leaving her university sophomore year 35 years earlier to get married and start a family, she bravely stepped back into the college game in her late 50s. With a freshman in high school still at home, as well as a full life of being a wife, grandma, and volunteer at her church, she decided to finish a dream she had started 3 decades before.
In this episode, Mama Carol shares her concerns, fears, obstacles, and triumphs of never letting go of a dream....no matter how long it takes to accomplish or how old you may "think" you are.

She explains some of the differences between menopause and perimenopause, and she answers questions I've wondered about for a long time. Sally also shares with us some of the things that she went through personally so we can have a heads up of what the next phase of life can look like for many of us.
Think of it as having a big sister or girlfriend who is filling us in on what's coming! Listen in, ladies! This is a great one!

Let's be real. Sometimes relationships can be tricky. Sometimes they can be hard. Sometimes they don't look like they "should."
My guest today is Rachel Hudson, a Life Coach who helps women with their tricky relationships with their mothers. Many women who may have a difficult relationship with their mom feel guilty or ashamed that their relationship doesn't look like the norm.
Whether we have a rough time with our mom, a sister, or an in-law, Rachel shares what she's found that can help us all in these situations.

When we go through a life transition, often another persons' words can carry or anchor us in our uncertainty. These can be words both spoken and written.
In this episode, I share the 3 books that have carried me during very specific parts of my lifequakes and why they had such an impact on me in the hopes that you may find some comfort, or inspiration, during your life transition.
Books mentioned in the episode:
You are a Badass Series by Jen Sincero
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
Atomic Habits by James Clear

My 19 yr old son, Nicholas, is a college freshman currently studying film and television. He has dreams of becoming a director and writing screenplays in the not too distant future.
He's been through some life quakes himself, even in his few short years. Nicholas and I sit down for a conversation about making friends, learning and living your truth, and directing your own path - even if it looks a little different than the one your parents originally had in mind for you.

When you find yourself saying one thing and doing another...
When you have a goal, but every strategy, good idea, and plan goes out the window...
When you say yes to something, but deep down - as much as you want to do that thing - you know you'll not do it, procrastinate doing it, or avoid it altogether...
Listen to today's episode to find out WHY this may be happening and what you can do about it.

This episode is for anyone who may be wondering if there is hope in finding love again after a loss - whether it be divorce, death, infidelity, or a serious illness.
Today's podcast is special to me because I sit down and have a conversation with my sweet hubs, Josh.
After being married for 26 years, Josh found himself wondering what might be in store for him after a divorce. He shares what kept him going when he wasn't sure what was next, how he made peace with the idea of possibly being alone, and (spoiler alert!) where he found love in a surprising place.
If you'd like to hear his side of our story, or if you are looking for some hope during a time of uncertainty and loss, then this episode is for you.

Have you ever noticed when you've RSVPed to a party and one part of you says something like, "We have to go - we RSVPed," and another part of you says, "Let's stay home?"
Or maybe you've decided to lose a few pounds. One part of you says, "Why did you just eat that? Don't skip a workout!" while another part of you might whisper, "Go ahead and have a cookie. You've worked so hard...it's ok to skip a workout."
It can often feel like an internal tug of war.
This is a theory in therapy called Internal Family Systems (IFS) and focuses on the idea that our minds are all made up of several "parts" and "subparts."
In this episode, I explain IFS in its most basic form and as I see it. I'll also show you how just even a simple understanding of this theory has helped me, as well as many of my clients, in understanding why we may at times feel at odds within ourselves - whether it's in weight loss, with relationships, or even parenting.
(*Disclaimer! I am not IFS certified, and I don't claim to be! Reach out to a therapist or practictioner who is certified in Internal Family Systems for a deeper understanding.)

He may not have known it before our episode, but Sandy McIlree has been one of my mentors for YEARS. The cohost of the former JB and Sandy Morning Show in Austin, TX, Sandy was in my ear from the time I woke up in the morning until I got to work a few hours later.
Sandy's had his own set of lifequakes: from morning show evolutions, divorce, marriage at 40, and then becoming a dad....he has walked through numerous shifts and changes.
Sandy shares what he's learned along the way, and BONUS! The conversation inevitably shifts to the "lifequake" our favorite town is currently facing.
If you're a fan of Austin, this is a must listen!

Kate and I have been friends since high school. We're both children of divorced parents, we've left the LDS religion, and we each have a slight obsession for coffee (even though ordering it still seems hard sometimes).
Come be a fly on the wall and listen as we talk through all of these things...but especially about how hairdresser Kate, after 22 years behind the chair, suddenly found herself navigating life and work and parenting during a worldwide pandemic. She's learned a few lessons in the last 3 years, and she shares them with us today.

In this episode, I have the absolute pleasure of talking with my own life coach, Master Certified Coach Carrie Marshall.
Carrie had her own life quake a few years ago when she went from being home with 6 small children (3 of her own and 3 kiddoes she nannied), and trying to figure out how to help her family make ends meet, to being a literal badass moneymaker.
We go over Carrie’s fears and concerns at the time, her process of how she decided what her “next” looked like for her, and the lessons Carrie has learned along the way.
This one is full of good nuggets, y’all.
If you’re a mama feeling a call to something more, listen up! Today’s episode is for you.

It’s the middle of January…how are your New Year’s Resolutions going?
Are you the same person you were a month ago? Are you still feeling motivated/determined/excited/punch-the-sky ready to go?
Have things gotten hard yet?
Have you started hitting the snooze button on your early morning runs or told yourself, “It’s ok if I have that extra cookie…” Maybe you’re white-knuckling your promises to yourself to sit down and write that book that has been on your heart for years because every time you get started someone needs you, there’s a technology issue, you have a creativity block, or you’re just going to see what inspiration you can find from Instagram….
My guess is that if you haven’t been faced with some kind of hurdle or stumbling block just wait…you’re about to.
We often quit when things get hard.
We often get frustrated when our grand plans don’t go according to plan.
We often throw in the towel before the new yoga mat isn’t even broken in yet.
How do we stop this? Check out this episode to hear 3 key things you can do instead so that you don’t quit, friend.
Have a listen, and then let’s keep going.
What do you do when you have a difficult relationship with a family member? What happens when parts of your life don't look like they "should" look?
If you, or someone you're close to, has a hard relationship with a family member, it's not because there's something wrong. It's because this is how it's supposed to be.
In this episode I share my own personal story about my relationship with my biological father. Although we didn't have "the norm," there were gifts and lessons that have come from having an atypical bond.
Listen in to hear how I navigated my side of things as well as what I have learned from my relationship with my dad.

With the new year, and the promise of a new start right around the corner, most of us are thinking about our goals for next year. Lots of our new year's resolutions include breaking habits that right now may feel like rewards.
These rewards often come through chemicals in the brain, including dopamine. Maybe your daily dopamine hits are coming from sugar or processed food, shopping, alcohol, or even scrolling on your phone.
In today's episode I share with you my favorite way to give myself daily, gentle gifts that give me steady dopamine without shocking my system. These rewards feel luxurious, so I don't need to turn to other behaviors for pleasure or satisfaction.
If you want a different way to find some joy in your day-to-day without sacrificing your goals, then this episode is for you!

When I was going through a divorce I wondered if anything would still be "normal." What do birthdays and holidays look like? What does Christmas look like? How do I survive a Christmas morning without my sweet boys at home?
Today's podcast episode is a conversation with my dear friend and fellow divorced mama, Liz Keister. We talk about what the holidays look like for us, now that we have both gone through a few years of Christmases, Thanksgiving, and other holidays post divorce.
Listen in to hear some of the lessons we've learned, the new traditions we've created, and what's never changed.
Whether you're a single parent, a soon to be empty nester, or even a friend of someone with children, you'll be able to find a few takeaways on how to be gentle with yourself, or your friend, during this special time of year.

Do you have a hard conversation or a difficult situation coming up? My guess is that with the holidays, lots of get-together, and family moments, there’s bound to be at least one or two uneasy interactions that are looming over your head.
Maybe things are cool with your fam, but there’s an uncomfortable conversation you need to have with a coworker, spouse, or friend.
How do you even plan for something like that? Most people have no plan, and they have no idea what to do. Instead they worry, overanalyze, and predict the worst case scenarios.
Listen to today’s episode of The Life Quake Podcast to hear what you can do to prepare for a difficult situation or conversation - from the moment you learn that the event is coming, to what to do during the actual conversation, as well as how to get through the rest of your day afterwards. (Hint: it may include shoving your face full of ice cream, it could include walking….it’s really up to you.)

When you’re trying new things, you may get stuck and then quit because you could be thinking, “This isn’t for me. I don’t belong.”
Listen to today’s episode, Belonging, as we take a closer look at how this sneaky thought trips us up time and again.
Where are you telling yourself you don’t belong?
How is it shutting you down and keeping you out of the things you really want to do?
What can we even do about it?
I go over these questions, and I’ll give you some real life examples of what to do when you notice “I don’t belong” is getting in your way.
Tune in to this week’s episode to hear more!
