Bokor Mountain was my favourite cycling destination in Kampot. At 1,048 meters above sea level, the 33 km road up and down is absolutely wonderful. The history of the hill station is varied having been set up by the French as an escape from the heat in the 1920's, and abandoned in the 1940's. When I first arrived in 2000 the road was almost impassible and considering the downpour we opted to stay at sea level. In 2011, the new road was finished and the hill station was finally accessible to all until recent times. These days the Chinese have leased the hill station and began limiting access. Big plans are in store including a new city, port and tramway up the mountain but with the economic situation now, that could also fail. I enjoyed my rides up and down Bokor Mountain. This shop orders containers full of second hand products from Japan and sells them to Thai customers here in Phuket. They are located in the market and besides having such a massive assortment of items from Japan sell excellent coffee, tea, and other drinks as well as a new small buffet in order to make money to pay staff wages in these difficult times.

This reminds me of Apocalypse Now. Actually it's not nearly as scary. Just some fisherman returning home from the sea. They live in tin metal houses on stilts in the mangroves with often times no access by land. The longtail boats are wooden Thai style boats with motor engines on the back with long propeller shafts on the end which can be swung around for mobility.

Phuket is a rather big island which has many less visited spots especially on the east side where I live. This is the view of the bay from Kho Sirey looking at Cape Panwa and Saphan Hin Park in Phuket Town. The land has a large house owned by a Swiss doctor that lives in Bangkok married with a Thai woman. The groundskeeper told me this years ago. Luckily people are allowed to access the area through the kindness of the owner. Only a few locals go fishing there however. Of course I went by bicycle. This time I rode my fixed gear.
