You've most likely never heard of jazz pianist Hassan Ibn Ali. Until recently, his legacy was confined to one recording he made with Max Roach in 1964. Yet his playing is legendary, and to this day, his living memory reputation amonst people who heard him or knew him is epic, 40 years after his death in 1980.
Now, two new recordings have been released from tapes that were made during his lifetime. These tapes almost didn't make it through the years, and could have been completely lost. But one man, Alan Sukoenig, has made it his mission to track down these tapes and work with a record lable to release the music on new albums.
In this interview, I have Alan on the webcast, along with pianist and jazz historian Lewis Porter. It is in fact Alan who recorded Hassan Ibn Ali in 1964, using a portable tape player, in a dormitory lounge of the University of Pennsylvania.
I am in awe of Alan's and Lewis' dedication to unearthing, preserving, and celebrating the legacy of this musician who, due to his own eccentricity and a propensity to go to prison, didn't have the career that his talent would have demanded. Thank you two for being my guests on this episode.

NFTs are starting to make a big impact in the music world, and that includes classical music. I interview Francisco Supin and Baher al Hakim, the creators of MozartBeats, an NFT project on Async.art which I found compelling enough to actually invest in.
MozartBeats is a recording of Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik which contains 625 combinations for how it might actually sound when played. It was recorded by a top Viennese string quartet, and will change the way you think about this piece, and what a classical music project looks like. The project has raised over $60,000 in sales and the main NFT, which is still for sale, has a list price of 45 ETH (over $200,000 at current valuations).
We discuss how music NFTs are structured on Async.art, which is a very special concept that centers on "programmable music", and ensuring that the actual music generated by the NFT changes over time.
This is done by breaking down an NFT into "Stems", which are collections of variations of one voice, "Masters", which is the overarching NFT seen as a whole, and "Recordings", which are snapshots of the NFT at a moment in time.
We also discuss how the NFT was made, and why it is significant to the classical music industry.

Stefan Adolf is part of a team that participated in the recent ETH Online Hackathon, and they came up with GetSplice.io - a minimal viable product implementation of an idea that could have big implications for NFTs and the Metaverse.
Splice creates generative art for the NFT metaverse
NFTs make great profile pictures. Showing off your NFT as a profile picture, preferably on the collection communities' Discord channels, makes you part of the gang! Large communities grow around NFT collections and invent derivative value - like $MILK tokens and companion eggs for cool cats, spinoffs on BAYC or puppies for Doges.
These derivative elements can form a metaverse where NFT communities flourish – a world of playspaces, workplaces, games, tools, accessories, weapons, etc. So that’s a great vision, but currently there aren’t good tools to make it happen.

The @spknetwork recently announced an upcoming token claim, in three months time, for the purpose of mining LARYNX tokens. The community had a lot of questions about the event, so I had a chat with @starkerz to answer as many questions as possible.

A long time ago I was a horn player. This is one of a handful of performances that I'm quite proud of. Hearing it now, a decade since I last picked up a horn, I hear everything in it. The good, the bad, the ugly. The talent, the limitations, the hard work. It's a good record of how far I made it with the horn, and I'm quite happy to have this recording. Thank you to all the people who played in my orchestra back then!

In my search for safe, permanent storage for an archive of music files, I found Chainsafe.io, and the two products which they are offering, Files, and Storage. I then started talking with Colin Schwarz about these products and felt that they would be quite relevant to the Hive Community, so here we are, I'm happy to present you with this interview.
Files and Storage leverage IPFS and Filecoin to offer secure, private file storage that is decentralized. Colin talks about the difference between the two - Files is the consumer-oriented app that is for storage and sharing of files, and Storage is the API layer that powers Files.
These are beta products and Colin says that pricing for them should be pubished next month (November 2021). I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with!

She does not give up. She writes love songs to express her pain, rage, and hope.
She sings him the songs, to save her love.
