This week we chat with Serena McDonnell, a data scientist and quant researcher who, in her spare time, created Foodshake — a web app that converts any recipe to vegan. Inspired by her father’s reluctance to cook for her after she went plant-based Serena realized she could funnel all the conversions she’d figured out on her own (and with the help of testers in the Toronto veg community) into an application that makes adapting old family recipes, or any dish you find online, as easy as plant-based pie.

There are few people who like to dole out advice more than vegans coming to the aid of other vegans. Perhaps it’s our do-gooding nature, perhaps we just enjoy spreading the word, perhaps we get too excited about soup. Today we scour the Toronto Vegans Facebook group for questions about all things vegan and attempt to answer them. Who knows, it may become a regular episode.

Vegan, Plant Based, Vegetarian, Ovo Lacto, Flexitarian – there are many ways to describe how and what you eat. For some, labels are necessary and are held as a way to express their beliefs and maintain their values. For others, it is a starting off point to get to the place they want to be. Can you be vegetarian and wear leather? Vegan and eat honey? Or kill insects? Barbi, Steve and Jeanette talk about veg labels and the impact they have on the veg community.
No, we’re not considering turning our backs on our vegan life choices. Instead we’re talking about mock meats, meat substitutes and protein alternatives. But we also broach the topic of lab-grown meat. When the cell-cultured stuff is ready for mass consumption will we be first in line to try it, or are we happy with the alternatives we already have?

Barbi, Marni and Sweta share their veg experiences. Whether you’re a long-time vegan or newer and seeking support, this episode of Veg Out will give you something to chew on.
We’re three weeks into Veganuary and realize some newer vegans, or those just experimenting with a vegan diet, may be running out of meal ideas. So, we thought it was the perfect time to ask three of our veteran veg-heads — Sweta, Jeanette and Marni — to share a few of their go-to meals. You know, those dishes that are tried and true and relatively easy to put together. Let the inspiration begin!

Vegan burgers continue their meteoric rise. Listen as we talk about our favourite burgers in the city and welcome Darryl Neate, the founder of Mavericks Burger Co., to chat about his burger business.
We are sharing with you some highlights from past episodes of Veg Out where we talk all things holidays and how it relates to veganism.
Have some cash you’d like to invest in a company that aligns with your plant-based values? All of a sudden there are lots of publicly traded businesses that tap into the growing sector. But picking and choosing individual stocks can be risky, not to mention intimidating if you’re not an experienced investor. Meet today’s guests, financial advisors Anup Ruperalia and Justin Manning, the guys behind a Change.org petition called “Vegan Investing Platform in Canada.” With your help, and digital signatures, they want to show portfolio management companies there’s more than enough interest to justify creating a diverse, balanced portfolio of plant-based stocks. Hmmm. A professionally vetted collection of companies that are trying to eliminate and replace animal products. Sounds good to us.
With the end of 2021 fast approaching, the Veg Out team was in the mood to look back at some of the amazing episodes created this year.Welcome to our best of show! We look back at some interviews, topics, and more.
Today Sweta and Ana chat with Elliot Alexander and Peter McQueen about all things TVA. With the TVA Annual General Meeting coming up and the recent call for committee members we thought the timing was right to learn about how the TVA works behind the scenes. Elliot and Peter, two of our current board members join us to chat about what goes on behind the scenes.
Barbi, Ana and Jeanette love watching Youtube, and with some new content recently released on the TVA’s channel, we thought it would be a good time to share with you our favourite creators making vegan content.
This year’s Veg Food Fest will look a little bit different. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, it’ll be staged as a pop-up event at the Steam Whistle Brewery rather than its usual home, the sprawling Harbourfront complex. There will be 30 vendors instead of the usual 150+. Instead of three days, it’s just one – Saturday.
Cookies, chips, and crackers, oh my! There are many mainstream products in grocery stores that are “accidentally vegan.” Everything from puff pasty to pancake mix. The term refers to items that are not necessarily marketed to vegans, and are not produced specifically to be vegan, but they just happen to not have any animal derived ingredients.
Ugh. It’s August and we’re still not supposed to travel outside of Canada unless necessary. If you’re lucky, and rich, you might have had the foresight to book a cottage somewhere up north months ago. If not, hey, there’s still camping! Our three vegan camping enthusiasts — Marni, Barbi and Steve — discuss how to have a successful plant-based camping experience that goes beyond the Beyond Burgers. We’ve got tips, tricks, recipes and even some suggestions about where to camp if you’re having a tough time finding a spot at a provincial park.
Vegan celebrities, boon or bane? Join us for an informal chat about some of our favourite vegan celebs and the contributions they’ve made to the community, some famous folk we thought were vegan but upon closer inspection probably aren’t, as well as some who were at some point, but now, not so much.
Connie Oliveira is the creator of the food blog The Portuguese Vegan, which you can find on Instagram and Facebook. She joins fellow Portuguese Vegans Ana and Jeanette on this episode of Veg Out to talk about her journey to create a cookbook that honours her mother’s heritage by preserving family recipes, and veganizing them.
Taimoor Choudhry is a fashionable guy. In fact, he used to be the General Manager and Creative Director of a jewellery line called Damas. He also used to wear fur. No more! A few years ago, Choudhry had an epiphany when he started to see that fur trim on his parka as more than just a piece of raw material. It had, of course, been a living, breathing, feeling being no different than his own beloved pooch. Now Choudhry is doing everything he can to help others see fur for what it is, including making Real Fur, a documentary about his journey from oblivious to educated, from fur fan to animal-rights activist.

Wondering how to live a more sustainable lifestyle but stuck on those pesky single-use plastics that many of our favourite products come in? We’re here for you with tips and inspiration from Lin and Toni Sappong, founders of local initiatives like PlasticFree TO and Leslieville Reduces – and self-professed Planetarians.
Barbi, Ana and Jeanette call of a meeting of the Veg Out Cookbook Club to talk about some recently published cookbooks and new discoveries. If you are in a cooking rut, this episode is for you.

Ana and Jeanette talk to Dean about his experience at Virtuous Pie, how he started TMRW Foods after participating in a vegan burger competition, and how he plans to grow the company.
This week, Barbi and Jeanette are joined by our guest Sam Turnbull. You may know Sam from her super popular blog and youtube channel It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken. She released her first cookbook Fuss Free Vegan in 2017, which quickly became Jeanette’s favourite cookbook.
You may know Globally Local for their Famous Burger, or their BacUN Breakfast Sandwich, but did you know they started out selling produce? Or did you know about their charitable work, or plans for expansion? James McInnes, the CEO of Globally Local, joins the show to talk about their approach to fast food and veganism.
Join Ana and Sweta for an information-packed episode. Catch up on what the TVA has been up to and learn about the economics of plant-based eating with our guest Nital Jethalal. Nital is the President of the Board of Directors for the TVA and founder of Plant-Based Economics (PBE).
Steve and Ana are thrilled to be joined by Dr. Sarah Dodd on this episode of Veg Out! Sarah is a veterinarian with a special focus on companion animal nutrition. Her studies have taken her around the world: She has lived in England, Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, the US and she is back to Canada; listen as she chats with us about vegan animals.
Your friendly hosts have been collecting fun facts and foibles and want to share them with you, our listeners! With Veganuary having just wrapped up, a lot of folks are talking veganism, which is great! What’s not-so-great is the misinformation that’s often shared in the media or dominant conversations. Listen as we discuss all that and more.
Ana and Jeanette are thrilled to be joined by Kimberly Carroll on this episode of Veg Out! Kimberly has an extensive background in animal rights activism, including co-creating the “why love one but eat the other” transit ad campaign, as well as co-founding Mercy for Animals Canada. She is also a campaign strategist for Animal Justice.
New year, new opportunity to build healthier habits! We wanted to kick off another year of the Veg Out podcast with an episode featuring Dr. Shane Williams (originally from Newfoundland and now based in Bracebridge, ON), a community leader and cardiologist with in-depth knowledge about the power of plant-based nutrition to prevent cardiovascular and other chronic diseases.
Well, we’ve come to the end of 2020! Our merry podcast hosts Sweta, Jeanette, Steve, and Ana take some time to reflect on a year like no other. From highs to lows to lingering uncertainties, we’ve managed to stay connected through virtual events and have introduced exciting new TVA programming looking ahead to 2021.
We’re now fully into December and the holiday season, a time when people turn to baking for comfort, sharing and gifting. Toronto based vegan cookbook author Ally Lazare joins Barbi and Jeanette to talk about her latest book, Vegan Dessert Cookbook, as well as share tips and recipes for baking for the holidays, and baking.
With all the talk about developing a vaccine for COVID-19, have you ever wondered about the medications, supplements, and vaccines we take – and how to find out whether their production methods and ingredients are vegan? Sure, you can read the ingredient lists but it can be hard to decipher the medical terms.
Thursday October 1st, 2020 was World Vegetarian Day. It was also the 80th birthday of our podcast host and volunteer Steve Beiko! In this second part of a two part interview, we learn about Steve’s athleticism, activism, and what veg life was like in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
This year Veg Food Fest went virtual! Your friendly Veg Out hosts collectively watched nearly all of the online programming and have lots to share (in case you missed it, don’t worry: you can still catch all the online talks and panels at vegfoodfest.com for one more week). From the positive health impacts of a plant-based diet to building community through vegan social groups to youth activism, there are more possibilities than ever to bring veganism from the personal to the political and from your home to the broader community – whether that is virtual or in-person. Want to share your impressions, inspirations, and questions about Veg Food Fest programming? Did you host a Zoom viewing party with friends, fuelled by all your favourite vegan snacks? We’re just a week away from Veg Food Fest! Whet your appetite with this episode all about fast food from a vegan point of view. We are lucky to have a bevy of delicious (and sometimes nutritious) vegan fast food options in the GTA, but it’s not always easy to find them elsewhere, especially on road trips or in more rural communities (“cheese isn’t vegan?”). Hosts Sweta and Steve and special guest Barbi also share their thoughts on cross-contamination in restaurants, which is an interesting topic as more omnivore restaurants start to offer plant-centred meals. Plus, get a preview of what to expect at the virtual edition of Veg Food Fest, happening September 11-13. While it may not be quite the same as roaming around the Harbourfront Centre, we’ve planned quite the lineup of interactive events.

On this episode, Sweta and Steve chat with Peter McQueen, who has been instrumental to the TVA since 1983. Get inspired by his journey to ethical veganism and hear how the Veg Food Fest has evolved from its humble beginnings as the Vegetarian Information Fair (no, the TVA did not have a marketing expert at the time) to the weekend-long vegan extravaganza at the Harbourfront Centre that you’ve come to love. Lisa Le is a nerdy, feminist, intersectional vegan blogger and food photographer. She runs The Viet Vegan blog and Youtube channel, and you may remember her as a former Veg Out host and Resource Centre volunteer. Lisa joined us virtually to talk about her sourdough journey, propagating house plants, and discovering the new plant based Becel butter bricks and using them to invent vegan matcha-lime sticky buns (pictured above). We also talk about TVA’s new fitness and fundraising initiative Steppin’ to the Beet and share our own fitness experiences during the pandemic. On this sweltering hot weekend, who better to chat with than Ikeila Wright from One Love Vegetarian – purveyor of delicious meals with just the right amount of spice? From corn soup to roti to callalloo, One Love offers a variety of nourishing Carribbean creole dishes made with care and love. On this episode, Sweta and Steve talk to Ikeira about Ital food, Rastafarian culture, and finding community here in Toronto. Since One Love offers plant-based cuisine infused with Caribbean flavours, Ikeila emphasized the importance of sourcing Indigenous foods from the islands like collard greens, Jamaican sweet potato, and herbs like thyme. Listen in to find out how One Love evolved from selling delicious corn soup at festivals and concerts around the city, branching out to cook more dishes and offer catering, then opening the beloved green storefront. Plus: raising five kids on a plant-based diet! Did you know? One Love is one of the longest-standing vendors at the Veg Food Fest (speaking of that – stay tuned for announcements about how this year’s virtual festival is taking shape). Visit One Love at 854 Bathurst Street in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. In the Caribbean, Ital refers to food from Indigenous crops that promotes good health and liveliness. It’s a holistic term that encompasses history, food, and culture. Ikeila explains like coming from a culture of oppression has bred ingenuity and resourcefulness, and she draws from this resourcefulness to make vegetable and plant-based foods taste amazing (hint: it’s all about the seasoning).
We’re keeping the celebrations going! In Part 2 of our special 75th Anniversary episode, hosts Sweta and Steve dive into some of the early days of the TVA with guest Michele Brennan, who has been with the organization for many glorious years. The TVA may have an official office and Resource Centre now, but, true to its community ethos, its first and long-time office was actually in the home of the first president, Barbara Jackson. Listen on for more blasts-from-the-past, including how much the vegan and vegetarian restaurant scene here in the GTA has evolved over the past decades. We round out key moments in the organization’s history with updates about Bill 156 (which would essentially criminalize the act of investigating animal cruelty practices) and a new ice cream from Perfect Day (they make cow milk from bacteria – talk about innovative!), and of course, restaurant updates.
Did you know that the TVA is turning 75 in on June 19? Tune in for a special Anniversary edition of Veg Out, where we chat with John Graber, a long-time volunteer with the TVA, about the history of the resource centre and the creation of the podcast as a slice of TVA’s history. Toronto’s veg*n landscape has changed dramatically over the past 10-15 years and it’s always fun to take a look back at how things used to be (i.e., needing to go to Seattle to find a good vegan donut). Plus: who, or what, is Gonga? And what is one staple you’ll (almost) always find at the Resource Centre? Listen to discover more fun facts about the TVA’s history.
We’ve made it through seven weeks of COVID-19 lockdown here in Toronto and we wanted to check in and talk about how we’re coping. On this episode of Veg Out, Betsy, Sweta, and Sarah talk about finding ways to get some fresh air (and maybe even get a whiff of blooming magnolias), stay connected to our communities, appreciate our urban surroundings (7:30PM healthcare worker choruses FTW!), and of course – cook! Plus, the devastating effects of slaughterhouses are being amplified during this crisis, and we discuss the myriad problems with worker conditions on both human and animal health. Will COVID-19 lead to more awareness of the environmental and social impacts of meat consumption? Only time will tell, but for now, we’ll keep sharing ways for both veg*ns and the veg-curious to shift some of their food choices given the limitations of accessing fresh food (hint: dried legumes are the powerhouse ingredients that just keep giving).
On this episode of Veg Out, Sweta, Sarah, and Steve discuss Red Meat Republic, a hard-hitting and informative book that illuminates the troubling practices of America’s cattle ranching industry. From the complexities of land ownership to the blunt power of the assembly line to workers’ rights, there is so much to consider when it comes to ‘big meat’. A lot of the issues we see with modern industrial agriculture have entrenched histories, and it’s important to understand these histories as we continue to advocate for healthier, more environmentally sustainable, and more just food systems. Plus: get essential updates on some of our fave vegan businesses and find out how you can support them over the coming weeks.
On this episode of Veg Out Sarah, Steve and Sweta speak with Tanya from the restaurant Animal Liberation Kitchen. We get into how it all started and how they’re dealing with the struggles of maintaining a restaurant in these times.
On this episode of Veg Out, Barbi and Sweta speak with Samita Sarkar about the science of baking. Samita is the daughter of two chemistry PhDs and is quite knowledgeable about science herself. She shares her expertise and offers advice about how to make good desserts. At the end of the podcast, Barbi shares some online events that TVA has for all of us staying at home.
Please note that the Buy Good, Feel Good has been postponed until the fall. Please refer to their website for updates.
