In this conversation, host Yvonne Pierre speaks with Susan Gold, author, and consultant, about healing from a toxic family system. Susan shares that understanding the lineage of her toxic family system was incredibly healing for her. Yvonne shares her own experiences of becoming toxic due to the toxicity of her childhood and how she took the time to do the work on herself to recognize and change her behaviors. They discuss the importance of healing and how it can help to transform childhood trauma into adult freedom.
Susan and Yvonne spoke about how Susan changed her life despite her traumatic childhood. Her father was an alcoholic. He drank early in the morning and came home at random hours. Her mother was a stay-at-home parent and was overweight and surly. Susan was initially relieved when she heard her father come home, seeing him as her savior. She eventually realized she had to be intentional about changing her life, and that her trauma was a gift.
Susan is talking about growing up in an abusive household with an alcoholic, narcissistic father, and a pill-popping mother. He recalls a traumatic incident from his childhood in which his mother suddenly became violent, grabbing and beating him. The room started to swirl and brown out, leaving him terrified and confused as to what had happened. This experience left him with feelings of fear and insecurity that stayed with him into adulthood. He emphasizes that his parents hid the abuse from the outside world and that his mother was still a dutiful wife and mother in the home, making homemade meals and birthday cakes.
Susan had a traumatic childhood, living in an abusive home filled with violence, shame, and rage. Her mother was not in a good state and she knew something was wrong, so she kept focusing on how to get out. She graduated high school and left the morning after, never to return. She tried to cope with the trauma by turning her anger and confusion inward but still ended up in similar situations in her professional life. She was sexually harassed in the workplace and quit without another job. She then created her talent brokerage firm and was successful but had to face alcoholism and addiction first. She ended up working with Barbara Walters, who she had watched growing up, and the greatest lesson she learned from her was to be intuitive and to read people.

On this episode, Tatiana Mercier, a registered nutritional therapist, yoga teacher, and functional medicine practitioner, recently joined Yvonne Pierre on the show Let's Talk About Healing to discuss healing from burnout. Tatiana specializes in burnout after having experienced it herself in her early 30s. She had been on the wrong diet for her constitutional type for over 20 years prior to her burnout. The conversation also touched on peptide and stem cell therapies, which are used to reverse any acceleration of the aging process caused by inflammation in the body. Tatiana believes that a key component of healing from burnout is understanding one's constitutional type, in order to create a diet and lifestyle that works best for their individual needs.
Tatiana discussed how the lack of nutrients and minerals in her diet caused her to experience difficult childbirth. She inherited her mother's fear of childbirth since her mother had to have C-sections for all three of her children, and this fear led to her feeling extreme stress and anxiety, known as perceived stress. Her malnourishment caused her body to be under a lot of stress, and this is why it is so important to have a healthy diet, especially when pregnant or breastfeeding. The speaker emphasizes that not only is it important to have optimum nutrition, but it is also important to manage perceived stress in order to have a successful and healthy pregnancy.
Tatiana experienced severe burnout after the birth of her child due to a combination of stressors, including thinking she would die, being in a hospital that avoided C-sections at all costs, lack of sleep, and having to do everything alone due to a lack of support. She became flooded with adrenaline and cortisol, and her body was unable to produce enough milk to feed her baby. After speaking to a dietitian who told her that relaxing at home would help her produce milk, the speaker found herself unable to relax and exhausted due to the crying baby at night and lack of sleep. She went to a naturopathic doctor who diagnosed her with dysregulated stress response due to excessive stress and poor diet.
The conversation is between Tatiana and Yvonne discussing how to deal with burnout. The doctor explains that the first stage of burnout is a manic life, with too much stress both in and outside of the body, such as infections and dysbiosis. To combat this, the doctor prescribes vitamins and minerals, such as magnesium, B vitamins, omega three fatty acids, and most importantly, vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for the adrenal glands to function optimally and to manufacture the hormones of stress. Excess cortisol due to stressors triggers the body to release glucose stores, giving the muscles the strength to run away from danger.

About Tatiana Mercier: Tatiana Mercier is a registered nutritional therapist, a yoga teacher, and a functional medicine practitioner. She’s based in Weybridge which is located in Southwest England, UK, and works remotely with clients from America and the UK. After experiencing nearly two decades of invalidating burnout, and desperately knocking at the doors of various GPs who dismissed her symptoms arguing that “burnout” didn’t exist, and who only offered her antidepressants as a solution, she finally found a naturopathic doctor who believed her and helped her recover her health naturally. Since she became a practitioner herself in 2011, she decided to specialize in burnout. Her message is that of hope for people who live with extreme fatigue and do not find the answers and support they really need from the conventional medical establishment.
Tatiana works remotely with clients in the US.

On this episode of Let’s Talk About Healing, Yvonne Pierre welcomed Dr. Reena Singh to the show to discuss hormone health and aging. Dr. Singh is a Naturopathic and Functional Medicine Doctor who specializes in metabolic health and women's health. She helps women with weight loss, balancing hormones, and optimizing their health.
Metabolism is the process of taking energy from food and getting it to our cells so they can use it to perform various functions. Metabolic health is critical for our health and Dr. Singh discussed how hormones play a role in this. She discussed how hormones change throughout a woman's life and how understanding and addressing these changes can help optimize health. She also discussed the importance of finding a naturopathic doctor to help reverse the disease process and create an environment for the body to heal.
Metabolic health is a measure of how well we can extract energy from our food and environment and use it for our own needs. It is gauged by various markers such as blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and waist-to-height ratio. Eighty-eight percent of Americans are considered to have poor metabolic health, which is why it is so important to pay attention to these markers. High fasting insulin levels can be a sign of pre-diabetes and diabetes, even if fasting glucose and A1C levels are normal. It is important to get tested for fasting insulin, as this is the hormone that helps regulate the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. Managing blood sugar regulation is essential for feeling good, aging well, and maintaining hormonal balance.
The conversation discussed how hormones and diabetes are connected, and how understanding one's fasting insulin can help reverse the prediabetic state. It was noted that all hormones in the body are connected, and when one is imbalanced, it can affect the others. Diabetes, specifically, is characterized by high levels of sugar in the bloodstream and this can lead to elevated androgen levels in women, specifically. It was concluded that understanding one's fasting insulin is the first step to reversing the prediabetic state and helping to prevent diabetes.
Women tend to accumulate belly fat as they age due to increasing insulin resistance which triggers elevated testosterone and estrogen levels compared to progesterone. This can result in weight gain in the gut area. It is important to address underlying foundational systems such as the gut, liver, Adrenals, and thyroid to support metabolic health and hormones. The conventional medical system does not typically focus on these core underground systems, but they are key for overall health and hormones as women age.
