An outreach of The Empty Chair Endeavor designed to support and equip survivors of child loss in rediscovering life, hope, and joy after unspeakable tragedy. Additionally, our mission involves educating the public about the life altering impact the death of a child has upon survivors, both parents and siblings, and equipping them to better support and minister to them. Join us as guests share their stories of heartbreaking loss and how God has shown up on their journeys to restore hope. The host, Greg Buffkin, lives with his wife Cathy in South Carolina. Because Cathy and Greg lost their beautiful son Ryan to suicide in 2015 they understand the trauma and pain of losing a child. On a journey that began 7 years ago out of unspeakable trauma and brokenness, GOD has brought them through to a place of restoration, hope and joy with a passion to help fellow survivors on their journeys.
**Thirteen days can change an entire family’s history. We sit down with Cheri Fletcher to remember her daughter Annie, a 29-year-old singer-songwriter, social worker, and photographer whose sudden decline ended in an unthinkable goodbye. With honesty and tenderness, Cheri walks us through what it’s like to lose an adult child to an aggressive cancer she did not even know was there, and how shock lingers long after the hospital.
We also get practical about what grief really does. Cheri describes grief brain, the fog that makes reading hard and memory unreliable, the physical exhaustion that settles into daily life, and the way fear can spike when another loved one is late to return a call. We talk marriage and family dynamics, why counseling can help couples grieve in different ways without turning on each other, and how giving space and grace becomes a daily decision.
A major thread is faith in suffering. When prayer feels impossible, Cheri shares how God met her through friends who kept sending scripture and personalized prayers, and how she learned to see God’s presence without minimizing pain. She also offers a perspective that stopped her in my tracks: God misses watching Annie too.
Finally, we dig into the moment so many people dread: “I don’t know what to say.” Cheri created “Beyond I Don’t Know What To Say” grief cards to help friends and churches show up with courage, ask meaningful questions, and keep a child’s name present. Listen regularly for more hope-filled conversations, and share this with someone walking through loss, and leave a review so more grieving families can find this support.**

We sit down with Roxanne Hutchison to talk through the unthinkable reality of losing three children and a son-in-law and what it takes to keep living when your family feels shredded. We explore honest faith, the loneliness of stillbirth and child loss, and the slow work of learning to grieve with hope instead of pretending you’re fine.
• how Roxanne and Craig’s early faith and marriage foundation shape their endurance
• the trauma of stillbirth and why neonatal loss is often dismissed or misunderstood
• grief as a roller coaster and why isolating silence can hurt as much as words
• the myth of “do everything right and life works” and what a broken world exposes
• mental health, rare diagnoses, and the long shadow of medical crises
• what life looks like after the funeral when routine tasks become triggers
• what grieving parents actually need from friends: presence, listening, practical help
• lament, the Psalms, and rebuilding trust in God over time
• the Romans 8 promise that becomes a lifeline
I hope that you'll rejoin us again in two weeks to hear another story of hope and healing in the life of another grieving parent.

**A sudden illness can take a child in days, but the grief can echo for decades and it changes far more than most people realize. I’m joined by Ron and Nan Deal as they share the story of losing their 12-year-old son, Connor, and what 17 years of child loss grief has taught them about love, memory, triggers, and the hard work of continuing to live.
We talk about a mom’s experience of loss, including the moment Nan describes leaving the hospital and feeling like she’s losing part of herself. We also get painfully practical about grief triggers, why “sweet without bitter” becomes a normal tension, and how grief intensity can shift over time without ever fully ending. If you’re a bereaved parent, or you love someone who is, you’ll hear language that makes the invisible parts of grief easier to name.
Then we go straight at marriage after the death of a child: the scary divorce statistic people repeat, what the actual research suggests, and how couples can protect their connection when one spouse needs words and the other needs quiet. We also discuss surviving siblings, fear and hypervigilance, and why honesty at home matters more than pretending to be strong. Ron and Nan share two memorable tools: protecting a “grief garden” with healthy boundaries, and “grieving between the rails” where sadness and hope run parallel, just like biblical lament. We end with the Scriptures they’ve clung to, including Proverbs 3:5–6 and the raw honesty of Psalm 22.
I’ll include the Focus on the Family video link they reference in the episode notes. If this conversation helps you, subscribe, share it with someone who needs language for their pain, and leave a review so more grieving families can find it.**

**One phone call can erase the world you thought you were living in. Greg Buffkin talks with Linda Stirling, president of Umbrella Ministries, about the sudden and unthinkable loss of her 19-year-old son, Jeff, who was killed in an airplane crash in the mountains of Idaho. Linda doesn’t sanitize the story. She names the shock, the scream, the days that don’t feel real, and the quiet moment after the memorial when everyone goes home and the true weight of child loss settles in.
We also dig into what actually helps a grieving parent and what makes it worse. Linda shares why simple presence matters more than perfect words, why people often look away out of fear, and why saying their child’s name can feel like warmth on a cold day. If you’ve ever wondered what to say to someone who lost a child, this conversation offers practical do’s and don’ts grounded in real life, not theory, along with honest talk about guilt, regret, and the “shoulda, coulda, woulda” loop so many bereaved parents carry.
Faith is woven through everything, not as a shortcut around pain, but as a lifeline in it. Linda describes how Psalm 23 became personal and daily, and how learning to walk with God looked different than simply believing. We close with hope you can act on: the power of community, taking the next small step, and finding support through Umbrella Ministries, including conferences, groups, and resources for grieving moms and couples.

**A midnight knock can split your life in two. Diane Grotberg remembers the moment two sheriff’s deputies told her their 19-year-old son, David, was dead, and how the first thing she felt was that everything had changed forever. David was a Baylor University sophomore, a gifted musician and friend, and a young man whose faith and compassion had already shaped people far beyond his hometown in Minnesota.
We walk through the hard truth of the hit-and-run that killed him and the long, grinding wait for justice, including the reality of delay, denial, and a trial that didn’t arrive until years later. Diane also shares what grief looks like when you still have kids at home, schedules to keep, and a mind that feels like it’s turned to fog. If you’ve experienced child loss, traumatic grief, or you love someone who has, you’ll recognize the private sobbing behind public “strength,” and the exhaustion that comes when the shock wears off.
We also talk candidly about support and faith: what helped, what hurt, and why silence from church communities can feel like a second wound. Diane contrasts that with the people who showed up, including the Baylor community that honored David’s life, stayed connected, and made space for stories. You’ll hear simple, practical guidance for helping bereaved parents, plus grief resources like “Lament For A Son” and the search for hope that points beyond tragedy.
If this conversation matters to you, please share it with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more grieving families can find real support.**

**Miscarriage can shatter your world in minutes, and sometimes it happens in a place you never expected. I sit down with Samantha Watson, a military wife and mom, as she tells the story of her 2015 pregnancy loss while stationed far from family and still building community. She shares the moment joy turned to grief, the trauma surrounding the miscarriage, and the faith in Jesus Christ that held her up when she had no strength left.
We also talk about the part people rarely prepare you for: how others respond. Some want to help but freeze because they do not know what to say, while others unintentionally minimize early pregnancy loss. Samantha and I unpack why miscarriage grief is real, what “grief brain” feels like, and why “text me if you need anything” can be impossible for a grieving parent. You will hear practical ways to support someone after child loss, including simple acts like meals, childcare, and steady presence.
Samantha explains the worship and Scripture habits that helped her survive those early days, including listening to the Bible when reading felt overwhelming. She also shares how she talked with her children about the loss using John 10:10, and how God later redeemed her pain into purpose. That purpose includes her new podcast, Simple Devotions for Children, created to help Christian moms and families build faith at home with easy, engaging devotionals.

A teen can look like he is just “being a teenager” while he is privately fighting for his life. We talk with Todd and Melissa Shaffer about the loss of their 18-year-old son, Tristan, to suicide after a long, confusing road that included isolation, anger, depression, and warning signs nobody around them could clearly name. Their story is honest about what it feels like to miss what you did not know how to see, and what happens to a family when clinical depression and suicide risk finally break into the open. We also dig into the complicated realities behind mental health diagnoses, including how OCD can fixate on a person, how bipolar symptoms can be overlooked, and why emergency rooms and short evaluations often fail families in crisis. From antidepressant warnings to the stigma that still lingers in our culture, we discuss the tension many Christian families feel between “spiritual bandaid” advice and the need for counseling, specialists, and wise medical care. If you care about teen mental health, suicide prevention, or supporting bereaved parents, this conversation offers language and perspective you can carry into real life. Most of all, we talk about the grief journey after suicide loss and what actually helps: finding other parents who understand, living one day at a time, and learning to pray again when words disappear. Todd and Melissa share how Scripture, journaling, and the often-neglected practice of lament became lifelines, and how they now serve others through ministries like Christian Suicide Loss and Surviving Child Loss while building Sparrow Falls Ministry. Tune in for more conversations like this, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with one thing you want the church to understand about mental health and grief.

**A suicide can leave a family with a thousand questions and zero satisfying answers. I sat down with Anne Starke, a nurse, wife, and mom, to talk about the day her 16-year-old son, David, died by suicide and what it’s like to live with the shock of finding your child and realizing there is nothing you can do to undo it.
Ann shares the subtle changes she noticed in David over time and why teen depression can be impossible to “logic away,” even when a kid is loved, talented, and surrounded by friends. We talk honestly about suicide loss grief, the guilt that follows, and how exposure to another suicide can affect a young person who is already struggling. We also discuss the social fallout many families experience, when friends avoid you at church or in the grocery store because they don’t know what to say.
The story doesn’t skip the darkest parts: Anne’s shattered faith, anger at God, and the moment her husband had to step in because she didn’t know if she could survive. We get practical about mental health support, including therapy, trauma work, and antidepressants like Prozac, not as a “fix,” but as a tool that can steady you enough to keep breathing and keep going. Anne also explains why community with other suicide loss survivors matters so much, how prolonged grief can feel like being stuck, and how purpose slowly returned through starting Hearts of Hope and serving other grieving parents. You’ll also hear how GOD patiently and compassionately restored Anne’s faith and helped her embrace joy again.
If you’re walking through child loss, suicide bereavement, or supporting someone who is, this conversation offers real language, real hope, and permission to be honest. Share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more grieving families can find these stories when they feel most alone.**

**The phone call changes everything. One minute you’re living a normal week, and the next you’re racing toward tests, scans, and words like “concerning” and “brain tumor.” I’m joined by Billy and Julie Melton to remember their daughter Juliana, a newlywed with a contagious laugh, a love for people, and a faith that stayed steady through a long, painful 16-month cancer fight that ended on Valentine’s Day 2018.
We talk about what happens after adult child loss, when the world keeps moving but your time feels stuck. Billy and Julie describe the raw first year, the heavier second year when reality sets in, and the very real experience of grief triggers at church, at work, and in everyday places. We also dig into what actually helps grieving parents: community that shows up with practical care, the freedom to set boundaries without guilt, and the courage to let someone else hold you up when your faith and energy run thin.
They share how hospice support, counseling, grief groups, and time with other bereaved parents helped them heal, and why surviving siblings need attention too. We also explore the hunger many Christians feel to understand heaven more clearly when someone you love is there. Finally, Billy and Julie explain how God redeemed their suffering into Restoring Hope, a Greensboro-area ministry offering biblical hope and a safe space for bereaved parents facing adult child loss.
If this conversation helps you, share it with a friend who needs hope, and leave a review so more grieving families can find it. What’s one practical act of support that mattered most to you or someone you love?**

**A father checks “Find My iPhone” and realizes the unthinkable might be true. From that moment, Doug Schneider’s world changes forever. Doug joins me, Greg Buffkin, to tell the story of his daughter Micaela, a recent college graduate who landed her dream job at Warner Brothers, loved adventure, and wanted to be a light for Jesus in the entertainment industry. What follows is an honest conversation about child loss, sudden tragedy, and what grief looks like when it moves from the pulpit into your own living room.
We talk about the early days after the fatal car accident that took Micaela and her friend Olivia Johnson, including shock, denial, the physical toll of sorrow, and the haunting feeling that life keeps going while you cannot. Doug also shares why “healing” can feel like betrayal, why grief can be a sign of deep love, and how Christian hope is not pretending things are fine. We spend time on biblical lament, the kind of prayer that tells God the truth while still reaching for Him.
You’ll also hear practical wisdom for supporting grieving parents, especially what to say instead of the loaded question “How are you doing?” Doug names the value of community, including the ongoing friendship with Olivia’s family, and he recommends resources that helped him and his wife: Heaven by Randy Alcorn, It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way by Lysa TerKeurst, Dark Clouds Deep Mercy, and the From Pain To Purpose podcast. If you’re navigating grief, walking with bereaved parents, or searching for Christian grief support and comfort in Jesus, this conversation offers language, faith, and steady next steps.

In this heartfelt episode, Greg Buffkin welcomes Ron Deal from FamilyLife to discuss the profound journey of grief following the loss of his precious son Conner. Ron shares his personal story of losing Connor to a sudden, tragic medical complication, emphasizing the importance of not wasting pain and using it to help others. The conversation delves into the duality of grief, represented by the metaphor of two rails: one of pain and sorrow, and the other of hope and trust in God. Ron explains how navigating between these two rails is essential for healing, and how sharing their story has been a significant part of their journey towards recovery. Throughout the discussion, Ron highlights the importance of community and support for grieving parents, sharing insights on how to create a safe space for grief, and the necessity of being selective about who enters one’s grief garden. He also touches on the value of lament in the grieving process, encouraging listeners to express their pain authentically while holding onto hope. The episode concludes with Ron talking about he and his wife’s involvement with the While We’re Waiting ministry, which provides support for parents who have lost children, and the importance of finding trusted voices in the journey of grief.

On this episode, Cheryl Davis, host of the Time for Mom podcast, shares her story of loss as a young mom whose heart was neither equipped nor prepared to deal with the grief of child loss. Cheryl’s is a story that represents over a million others just like hers every year in the U.S. suffering the death of a child by miscarriage. All too often, we have a tendency to rank or compare grief based on our own subjective views or experiences. This is especially true in loss due to miscarriage or stillbirth, and can result in too many of these women trying to process and navigate their grief in silence because so few us understand just how real their grief really is. You’ll be encouraged as Cheryl talks about the personal impact of grief and how GOD’s faithfulness and grace began healing and restoring all that was broken. Cheryl has a heart for helping busy moms drowning in daily responsibilities with marriage, family and work, rediscover meaning, purpose and peace in the middle of it all. Most importantly, Cheryl wants to help you see yourself as GOD sees you by offering personal experiences and Biblical encouragement relating to your identity, routines and priorities on her weekly podcast, Time for Mom, which can be accessed using the link.

Finding anything good in grief might seem impossible for you today, and if so, you’re not alone. Grief often feels like it has taken on a life of its own, and even wants to become your new identity. How can there possibly be anything resembling gold in our grief journey? On this episode you’ll hear a conversation I recently had with Sarah Beth Gerbers about how she began to discover gold on her multiple grief journeys; yes, Sarah has experienced the loss of a precious, beautiful child five(5) times by miscarriage! By any standard, that’s more heartbreak, loss and pain than any parent should ever have to endure. Sarah talks about her struggles with the multi-pronged impact of grief with refreshing honesty and transparency. You will also hear about how GOD’s tenderness, compassion, and grace carried Sarah through the darkest moments of her life and began weaving in threads of healing and beauty along her journey. Today, Sarah is passionate about introducing other grieving parents to the hope, meaning and purpose she knows through her relationship with her Savior and friend, Jesus Christ. That passion led Sarah to author a newly published book entitled” Moonflower: Defiantly Blooming in the Face of Great Darkness”, which you’ll be hearing about in our conversation.

They are known as “the forgotten mourners.” On this episode you’ll be hearing a conversation I had with Bobby and Gabby Bisterfeldt, founders of Sibling Lifeline, as we talk about how the death of a child affects surviving children. Both have experienced the tragic loss of two siblings each. As they share their stories, you’ll learn how each tried to process their own pain and grief while attempting not to be an additional burden on their grieving parents. It’s a common dilemma most siblings face after such a loss, but often overlooked or misunderstood by others who tend to be more focused on the parents. As a result, their grief is often delayed or suppressed, but nevertheless, is just as real and has a lasting impact on their lives. Bobby and Gabby are an amazing father in law, daughter in law team who have a heart for these forgotten mourners demonstrated by providing retreats where they can get away for a weekend with others who understand their loss and discover they’re not alone on their grief journey. These retreats are Christ centered and designed to offer hope, encouragement, and support. Click the link below to find out more about Sibling Lifeline and upcoming retreat opportunities.

A phone call on Christmas morning 2020 brought heart shattering news she never could have imagined. On this episode, Mary McNamara talks with me about how one phone call forever altered her life that day. Her beautiful 28 year old son, Zack, had died during the night alone. We talk about the questions such a sudden, unexpected tragedy leaves a parent facing and trying to process. You'll also hear Mary talk about what a caring, sensitive, and funny young man Zack was as well as some of his struggles. With courage, transparency, and grace, Mary shares her own struggles along her grief journey and how her relationship with Jesus Christ has been her source of comfort and strength.

On this episode, Brad and Jill Sullivan join me to talk about their sweet daughter Hannah, and their grief journey since losing her to a glioblastoma brain tumor in February 2009 after a year long battle. Hannah loved Jesus, and her faith in Him enabled her to not only endure this battle, but to live each day with purpose to honor Him even as she underwent radiation therapy and surgery. Brad shares a very touching conversation he had with Hannah at one point that year as the two of them talked about why GOD allows us to suffer through storms in our lives, and the bold, unforgettable prayer she offered to Him prior to her diagnosis. Learn how Jill and Brad dealt with the questions, anger and trauma in learning the tumor had returned with a vengeance after months of healing and recovery and an initially positive response to treatment. With grace and transparency, they talk about the impact grief made in their lives and their marriage. You will also hear about the impact Jesus had on their grief! After losing Hannah, GOD inspired them to co-found While We’re Waiting, a non-profit ministry for grieving parents offering Christ-centered retreats, both near their home in Hot Springs, Arkansas, as well as venues in several other states, at no cost to their guests. Since 2020, their ministry now includes a very successful podcast by the same name where bereaved parents share their own stories of loss and GOD’s faithfulness to restore hope, meaning, and purpose. Their story is sure to offer you, our listeners, a message of hope and encouragement in your own storm.

On this episode, David Corvi and I explore the many facets of how grief after child loss affects men. The impact of such trauma is often overlooked or downplayed with dads, due, in large part, to cultural norms and unrealistic expectations of men in our society. While men and women grieve differently, men do indeed grieve, but the impact is not often visible. Having experienced the unthinkable pain of losing his beautiful son Charlie to late term stillbirth in October 2021, David candidly shares a dad’s unique journey from brokenness and disbelief to experiencing GOD’s loving kindness and grace, eventually inspiring David to author a book entitled, “Dear Charlie, Letters to my Son: A Father’s Journey of Loss, Grief, and Remembrance.” Additionally, David and his wife, Katherine, have established The Charles Martin Corvi Fund that partners with organizations that support families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss.

Seemingly unpredictable and random, miscarriage loss leaves parents, more especially moms, devastated and brokenhearted. Pregnant yesterday, but suddenly today, no longer. She’s left with countless questions that often have no answers, feelings of guilt that she didn’t do something right, fear that it might happen again, and so much love in her heart that now has no where to go. In this episode, Rachel Maxwell shares her story and we talk about these challenges and how she faced them. With a deep compassion for others borne out of her own pain and loss, Rachel shares how she was able to process and begin moving through the questions, fears and anger out of a deep faith and trust in Jesus who is our hope.

In this episode, Tracy Dailey and I talk about her journey that began without warning on May 30, 2007. Eight months into her pregnancy and only 24 years old, Tracy was told by her doctor, after performing an ultrasound, that her sweet, precious daughter Emma, had no heartbeat. Everything seemed to slip into slow motion, and denial took over temporarily. Prior to the previous day, it had been a picture perfect pregnancy, and now the unthinkable had become reality and her life forever changed. Prior to this day, Tracy had never experienced grief. Now, without any support network, Tracy and her husband, Bryan, found themselves ill-equipped and unable to even begin processing the trauma and pain. Listen as Tracy shares how GOD rescued both of them from a very dark place and began healing and breathing new life back into both of them. Today, she’s Co-Founder and Board President of Emma’s Footprints, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing care and support for pregnancy and infant loss families ensuring that no family has to walk alone.

Critically injured by a hit and run driver on 10/5/23, Tommy’s beautiful 23 year old son Nick died from his injuries on October 21, 2023, a day that would forever change Tommy’s life. Parents shouldn’t have to bury their children. Like other dads, Tommy had dreams of seeing Nick discover his purpose in life, possibly get married and have a family of his own, and enjoy activities he and Nick loved doing together. Like those dreams, Tommy’s life was shattered that day. I hope you’ll listen as he shares his story and we discuss the impact of grief on a dad’s heart, his mind, his work, and relationships. You’ll also learn how Tommy’s faith and personal relationship with Jesus Christ are getting him through his grief journey one day at a time, healing the brokenness, and restoring hope and joy.

In this episode, pastoral counselor, author, and Bible teacher, Betty Ringeisen, talks with me about a grief/healing journey that began 20 years ago after miscarriage. Tragically, what lay ahead was unthinkable ... over the course of a few more years, Betty and her husband would experience the life altering loss of four (4) other children by miscarriage. How can a young mom survive, let alone process, that level of pain and trauma? Can a heart so deeply wounded ever heal? Betty's story is one of resilient faith and endurance in the face of deep loss and brokenness. It's also the story of GOD's love and faithfulness to restore joy, purpose and hope in Betty's life and then surprise her with a long awaited, beautiful gift. This is a message of encouragement and hope!

Have you ever felt utterly alone and helpless when your heart has been shattered and your world turned upside down? Did the people you thought you could count on let you down? After losing her precious, beautiful 4 month old baby daughter Everly, Martha found herself in a battle with grief that severely challenged her faith as a Christian. At a time when she needed unconditional love, support and understanding, what she got from too many people were well meaning “platitudes “ poorly timed or thought out, while others were either silent or nowhere to be found. Most were kind, sensitive and supportive, but the responses of the others yielded more pain and feelings of betrayal. Many of us can identify with Martha’s experience but, perhaps, have hesitated to talk about it. As you listen, I believe you will find Martha’s honesty and transparency refreshing as we discuss this and other aspects of her grief journey.

“After Trinity died, I was barely functional”, is how Richard described himself after he and his wife Stacey lost their precious daughter shortly after being born. Doctors described it as a “medical mystery”. In a previous episode (12/10/24) Stacey shared about her grief and healing journey as Trinity’s mom, and in this episode Richard and I talk about the impact of grief and trauma from a dad’s personal experience. It’s no secret that men and women both process and navigate grief differently, and in our conversation, Richard shares how Trinity’s death affected his identity as a protector and defender in his roles as a husband and dad, as well as the impact it had upon his relationship with GOD. After the death of a child, it’s not uncommon for a man to “dive into” his work as a distraction from the pain, a subject we also explore in our conversation. I hope you’ll join us for this thoughtful and insightful look into a dad’s grief journey.

When her eight month old daughter Adalyn died of two congenital medical conditions in May 2017, Heather’s heart was shattered and her life upended with grief. Three short years later, the unimaginable happened when her daughter Maelyn was stillborn in July 2020. How does a parent even begin to comprehend and process such unspeakable trauma? How can a mom navigate such grief and loss while trying to take care of another living child? Heather and I explore these and other questions as we talk about her journey over the past eight years from brokenness to rediscovering meaning, purpose, and hope through her relationship with GOD. Heather’s transparency and honesty offer us glimpses into a grieving mom’s heart reminding our listeners that grief doesn’t have to define our identity, but rather is an expression of the deep love parents have for their children.

"When Nicole went to Heaven, darkness invaded our world, and we wondered if our family would survive the crushing pain of grief." Kim Peacock
When Kim's daughter Nicole died in a tragic off-roading accident three days after Christmas in 1998, it left her shattered, and her whole world seemed to stop. No parent is ever prepared for such trauma and pain, much less equipped to deal with it. Kim and I talk about what that season was like, the struggles that descended, and how, by GOD's grace, she began to experience healing, and emerging through the darkness of grief as she started rediscovering hope and purpose in the aftermath.
I believe Kim's transparency and open heartedness will inspire hope and encouragement for your own journey. To discover more about Kim’s journey and how she’s now helping other bereaved parents, please visit her website below and check out her newly published book, “Victorious Heart: Finding Hope and Healing After a Devastating Loss”.https://www.wildvictoriousheart.com/about

After waiting the long arrival of their precious daughter Willow, June 8, 2017 was supposed to be a day of joyful celebration for Leslie and Andrew Burman. When their sweet baby was born still that day, their hopes were crushed and their hearts shattered. It wasn't supposed to be that way! How do young parents begin to process something so painful and traumatic? How do they go back to an empty home and try to figure out the way forward?
"Through it all, though, I felt a sense of calmness and peace. It was out of my hands. There was a bigger plan for our sweet daughter, Willow ..." Leslie
I hope you'll listen as Leslie and I talk about her journey, and shares how GOD began mending all those broken pieces, giving her a passion to help others and create "Be Like the Willow, a non-profit organization striving to provide comfort through acts of kindness, resources to aid grief and support like-minded charitable organizations."https://www.belikethewillow.com/

On this episode, my friend, Dr. Allan MacDonald and I talk about his journey with grief that began on December 31, 2018 when his 26 year old son Josh died after a valiantly fought, odds-defying battle with a congenital medical condition. Allan shares how Josh not only survived the initial heartbreaking medical prognosis, but went on to embrace life with a contagious zeal for living and doing all the things that weren’t supposed to be possible. We discuss the impact that deep trauma left Allan to process and try to navigate after losing not only Josh, but his marriage just a few months later. Even today, Allan sometimes has to contend with grief triggers as he rounds on patients in the same hospital, the same floor, and same room where Josh died in his arms that day in December. Allan’s is also a story of how, in his brokenness, GOD began taking all those shattered pieces and restoring beauty out of the ashes. This is a story of hope!

For most people, the thought of losing their child is almost more than their hearts can bear, seemingly unsurvivable. Unfortunately for Kendall and Andy Reid, this became a reality in 2017 when their precious 2 day old daughter, Ruby died suddenly in the hospital. Still grieving such a tremendous loss, their lives were once again shattered by the death of their second child, Jack, as a result of stillbirth in 2019. How does a young couple even begin trying to accept and process something so unimaginably painful? How does one maintain their sanity, return to work, and carry on with the routines of daily life? Is it possible for even a good marriage to survive?
In my conversation with Kendall and Andy, we explore these questions and other challenges, as well as how their faith and relationships with JESUS sustained them, held them together, and began a journey of healing that eventually led them to get involved with Ashlie’s Embrace, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing CuddleCots (TM) to U.S. hospitals and medical centers.https://www.ashliesembrace.org/

When parents are suddenly stricken by unspeakable trauma, what can they do, to whom can they turn, and how do they continue living with a shattered heart?
For Dave and Laura Diehl, their grief journey began on October 12, 2011 when their 29 year old daughter, Rebecca, lost a battle with life long medical challenges that began at the age of three(3). Learn how Laura and Dave dealt with the pain and navigated questions that challenged their faith while trying to support each other as well as the grief their other children were experiencing.
Finding themselves in the place every parent fears, they talk with me about how GOD began healing very deep wounds, eventually inspiring Laura to author several books to encourage and offer hope to other grieving parents, and to establish GPS Hope (Grieving Parents Sharing Hope), a nonprofit ministry “to walk with you through the suffocating darkness of child loss, guiding you to a place of hope, light, and purpose.” You can also listen to their podcast, Grieving Parents Sharing Hope Podcast, found on all major podcast platforms. Learn more about all of the resources available from their ministry by clicking on their website link found below.https://www.gpshope.org/

With no symptoms or warning signs to prepare her for what was to come after an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery, Stacey and her husband Richard's beautiful baby daughter Trinity died shortly after birth in February 2006 leaving them crushed and broken. Doctors could only speculate on the cause, but ultimately it was to remain a mystery. How do young parents process such a traumatic loss and shattered hopes and dreams? As Stacey and I talk about her journey from the unthinkable, she candidly shares the deep impact of grief on everyday life, relationships with others, how GOD healed her broken heart in a very unexpected way and eventually inspired her to author a book about her journey entitled " Losing My Child, Finding My God: From Grief to Belief" which was published in 2024. This is a story that will inspire hope and encouragement for any parent grieving their own loss.https://stacywons.com/

The unthinkable happened on January 17, 2023. David Szweda and his family’s lives would never again be the same, as they learned their 24 year old dearly loved son, Hudson had taken his own life. Such pain and loss leave parents utterly broken, wondering if they’ll survive it … and if they even want to.
A father’s heart is to protect and care for his spouse and children; the death of a child not only leaves him broken, but often dealing with a sense of guilt because he failed to protect, and anger because he couldn’t control the circumstances.
Join us as David and I discuss how GOD’s helped him begin processing and navigating a grief journey towards healing and wholeness. David’s transparency and authenticity will inspire and encourage you with the hope that is found in the One “who is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18.

What do we do when our deepest fear suddenly becomes our new reality? How do we even begin to process and navigate the pain and grief we never could have imagined? This is where Teresa Davis found herself on November 28, 2018 when she learned that her 32 year old son, Andrew had died when the plane he was piloting crashed in a very remote area, leaving behind a young wife and two children. Desperately wanting answers to so many questions, Teresa experienced a crisis of faith for the first time in her life. " The eyes of grief sent me on a quest to see if I believed GOD was what He said He was." In our conversation you will learn what she discovered on this quest and how GOD began to heal her brokenness and restored hope, meaning and purpose. Today Teresa hosts her own podcast called the Grief Mentor Show, and offers personal grief mentoring to other bereaved moms. She is the author of a devotional entitled " Finding Hope and Healing in the Midst of Grief" available through most major book outlets. I believe you will find Teresa's story refreshingly transparent and relatable.https://thegriefmentor.com/author/tdtldavis83/

In this episode, well known author and speaker Vaneetha Risner and I talk about her long journey of loss and suffering beginning with childhood polio, several miscarriages, the death of her infant son Paul, post-polio syndrome, betrayal and abandonment by her first husband, and caring for young daughters alone while battling illness. We talk about how GOD lovingly met her in the fire of suffering, using it to radically transform her, and then "watched Him turn her suffering into a conduit of grace and a passion for helping other people find hope in their suffering". In her book, "Walking Through Fire: A Memoir of Loss and Redemption", Vaneetha shares her journey of grief and suffering. Her life and ministry paint a picture of how Jesus can transform our storms into something beautiful, doing so much "more than we can even ask or imagine" (Eph.3:20)https://www.vaneetha.com/

As the day began to unfold on June 28, 2023, life as they knew it would never again be the same for Tobe and Amy as they learned their precious, beautiful 28 year old daughter Abbie had taken her own life after a long battle with depression and PTSD. Tobe and Amy had witnessed the pain and suffering of others as they grieved their loved ones in his role as a church pastor, but nothing could have prepared them for this. The death of a child leaves parents feeling shattered and empty; suicide adds a layer of complication, disbelief, guilt, and endless unanswered questions. At times raw and emotional, Tobe and Amy talk with me about how they’ve navigated the first year of their grief journey. I believe you’ll find their honesty and transparency refreshing as they share how GOD has lovingly and tenderly carried them through the worst a parent can experience to establishing a nonprofit ministry, Safe Helps Group, less than a year later. Listen as they talk about their mission to bring a greater level of awareness to suicide prevention and some of the factors that often trigger it, ministering to those affected by suicide loss, and understanding complicated grief.https://safehelps.com/

In our previous episode, Michael’s daughter, Jennifer Bullock-Moore, shared the story of the tragic loss of her beautiful son Miles to stillbirth in September 2021. Grandparents, like surviving siblings, are often overlooked following the death of a child, but their grief is just as real. In this episode, Michael describes the heartbreaking pain of losing his grandson and the intense weight of trying to navigate his own grief journey, while also grieving for his precious daughter and the pain and suffering she has had to endure. As a seasoned pastor who had counseled and comforted many grieving people over the years, Michael shares how he was completely unprepared for the level of grief and pain he experienced when it became very personal. Listen as he talks about how GOD lead him to capture his family’s journey from unspeakable tragedy to healing and restored hope, meaning and purpose in a book he authored, entitled “Even Now I Know, A Journey from Grief to Gratitude”. In 2023, Michael and his family founded Miles’ Mission, a non-profit organization in honor of Miles “where grief transforms into advocacy, and hope becomes a powerful force for change.”https://milesmission.com/

2022 statistics from the National Institutes of Health mirror findings of an investigation by ProPublica into the U.S. stillbirth crisis in which more than 20,000 pregnancies every year are lost at 20 weeks or more with the baby being born dead.
As the news anchor for the local NBC affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, Jenn’s pregnancy was celebrated and followed in a very public manner. But on October 11, 2021 tragedy struck when her beautiful son, Miles Owen, was stillborn at 33 weeks with little warning. Listen as Jenn shares her story of unspeakable loss and brokenness, finding herself in a very dark debilitating place, and how, through GOD’s kindness and grace, along with the love and support of her family eventually emerged from the ashes to rediscover hope, meaning and purpose. Learn how she and her family are letting GOD use their suffering to bring about much needed reforms within the healthcare system as it relates to the care of parents with stillborn babies by partnering with hospitals as well as state and local legislatures through Miles’ Mission, a non-profit they founded in 2023. In this episode, noted author, speaker and podcaster, Aubrey Sampson, talks with me about her personal grief journey and a crisis of faith following the sudden, tragic death of her cousin Cameron in a snow hiking accident. Describing Cameron as being like a brother, his untimely death resulted in a season of very deep grief and depression. As if that weren’t enough, after waking up one morning suddenly unable to walk, Aubrey was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease … all within a matter of months. Join us as she shares how GOD met her in the deepest pain and struggle of her life and led her to a place of healing and restoration. In her book, “The Louder Song”, Aubrey describes how the Biblical concept of lament played an instrumental role in her healing journey, ultimately restoring her joy and renewed purpose.

How is a parent supposed to accept and begin processing the sudden, unexplainable death of their child? Healthy 20 years don’t just die suddenly without warning or symptoms of some sort. Sadly, a phone call brought this devastating news to Tim Challies and his family on November 3, 2020. His precious son Nick, engaged to be married, and working towards a seminary degree, passed away suddenly while participating in a school activity. In this episode, Tim, a noted author, speaker, and blogger talks with me about the impact of this unspeakable loss, and how GOD shows up in our places of deepest pain and suffering to bring us hope and comfort.
As a way of processing his grief, Tim wrote, “Seasons of Sorrow”, a book that captured the first year of his grief journey from fall to summer, and is available from all major book outlets.

What do we do when the news we receive changes everything and we suddenly find ourselves in the middle of a crisis without warning? It leaves us paralyzed with fear and uncertainty so deep we don’t even know if we can pray, or how we can pray. If that’s where you find yourself as you’re reading this, please listen to this conversation.
In this episode, authors, Jessika Sanders and Eric Schumacher, talk with me about how GOD used the crises and loss they faced in their own lives, to inspire them to collaborate on their soon to be released book, “In His Hands: Prayers for Your Child or Baby in a Medical Crisis”. Their book offers Biblically based prayers for parents facing their worst fears that will give comfort and the reassurance of the love and care of our GOD and Savior Jesus Christ. Their book will be available through all major book outlets in July 2024.

For Terry Sternad, the cold, icy December day on a horse ranch in Colorado, was to be one of watching his daughter take a riding lesson while his 5 year old son T.J. enjoyed exploring around the stables where he had played on previous trips. What happened over the next few hours would forever profoundly alter Terry’s and his family’s lives.
In this episode, Terry and I talk about the heart wrenching loss of his precious son that day, how GOD lovingly revealed Himself in the pain, and put him on a journey of healing and restoration, both spiritually and emotionally. As you listen, our prayer is that you find hope and encouragement as you hear how GOD can take all of the broken pieces in our lives, restore meaning and purpose, and create something beautiful from it all.

January 31, 2018 should have been a "normal", otherwise uneventful day for Stephanie Carducci and her family. They would soon discover that was not to be the case, when they learned their beloved 17 year old son, Daniel, had taken his own life. The death of a child by any cause is such an unthinkable, unspeakable event for parents, but suicide compounds the pain and trauma with all the unanswered questions it leaves coupled with confusion, guilt, and a need for answers.
Listen as Stephanie and I talk about how she has navigated a now six year long grief journey, where GOD continues to heal and restore hope, meaning and purpose in her life. Learn about Bee My Voice, a non-profit founded by Stephanie in 2018 as a suicide postvention organisation providing immediate bereavement care and hope to the loved ones, as well as striving to bring meaningful change in their community surrounding this epidemic that continues to take the lives of so many of our children.https://beemyvoice.com/

The death of a child at any age is a traumatic, unspeakable loss for parents. All too often, however, the emotional, mental, and even physical pain suffered by parents as a result of miscarriage or stillbirth isn't afforded the same level of compassion or understanding as loss from other causes. In this episode, author, pastor, and podcast host, Eric Schumacher joins me to discuss the impact such a loss has had upon him and his wife Jenny, not just once, but four (4) times. If you have ever experienced such a loss, I believe this is an important discussion for you to hear and share with others, because so many parents like you suffer this loss in silence. Rarely will you hear miscarriage discussed in a public forum by two men, and equally rare, find a book written on the subject by a man from the perspective of a husband and dad, such as Eric's book, Ours: Biblical Comfort for Men Grieving Miscarriage. We hope you"ll be encouraged as you listen!

The death of a child is so heart wrenching that it often leaves parents feeling as though they might suffocate under the weight of the grief. We desperately want answers about why it happened. How do we process such trauma and begin to navigate through the grief when there are no answers? Join me as Danielle Duffey sits down and shares the story of losing her sweet, beautiful 17 month old son, Blake, to a very rare condition known as Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). Unlike SIDS, this rare disorder strikes approximately only 1 of every 100,000 children aged 1 - 18 years, and without very much understanding of the condition. We hope you’ll listen as Danielle talks about how GOD has used journaling to help her process and navigate her now 7 year grief journey and experience healing along the way.
Danielle is currently the host of her own podcast, The Mission Mama, the author of Gratitude Through Grief A 90 Day Journey, available through Amazon and Etsy, an Ambassador for the SUDC Foundation, as well as having her own blog called Healing through Journaling: A Mother’s Journey of Rediscovery after Loss.

When life takes an unexpected turn that leaves our comfortable, predictable world turned upside down, how do we respond? Listen as Jessika shares the story of having to face the fear of losing her premature baby boy during his 37 day stay in a hospital NICU followed a few weeks later with admission to the PICU. By GOD’s grace and mercy, along with skilled medical professionals, he survived and is a thriving, healthy boy today! Jessika would describe these as defining moments in her life as GOD allowed her glimpses into the fear, pain, and suffering so many parents experience in those specialized hospital units, because, as we know, not all of these stories end well.
Some data indicate an average mortality rate as high as 10% within NICU’s.
Out of this life changing experience, GOD gave Jessika a passion to minister to other parents with children in these sometimes lonely and frightening hospital settings, as well as parents grieving the death of a child. This passion would soon lead her to establish and lead Praying Through Ministries, as well as co-author a soon to be released book entitled, “In His Hands: Prayers for Your Child or Baby in a Medical Crisis” along with Eric Schumacher. For the majority of us, dates on our calendars represent a 24 hour segment of time that may be quite ordinary other than reminders of appointments, school events, etc. For some, however, a date on the same calendar represents a life shattering event that forever changes the trajectory of their lives. For Derek and Becky Farr, it came on September 28, 2021 when they received the news that their beloved son, Micah, had been killed in an early morning traffic accident at the young age of 27. As a career law enforcement officer and pastor, Derek was well acquainted with death and grief, but nothing could have adequately prepared him for the sudden, unexpected loss of his own son. Join our conversation as Derek and I discuss the impact losing Micah has had on his and his family's lives, his faith, and how GOD has so lovingly been restoring all the broken pieces. This story is one of GOD's kindness and faithfulness in the face of unspeakable tragedy and pain, and one that, I believe, will leave you with the certain hope that GOD can restore meaning, purpose, and hope to you on your personal grief journey.

Sometimes, life deals such an unexpected, devastating blow that it leaves us crushed, and afraid that we won't be able to get back up because the pain and trauma cut so deeply. For Rudy Milton, it came on July 19, 2015 when she received the unthinkable news that her only son, Dominique, had been murdered on a public beach on Hilton Head Island, S.C. at only 17 years of age. In an increasingly violent culture, too many parents and families are left trying to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives just like Rudy. So, what do we do in the aftermath of such a life altering loss? How do we deal with the pain, the anger, and the guilt that accompany the death of our child?
Listen, as Rudy shares how her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ has sustained and comforted her throughout this, now, eight year journey. I believe you will find encouragement and hope for your journey as Rudy opens her heart and offers a very honest and transparent glimpse into a mom's journey of both grief and healing.

Clinical depression is no respecter of persons, having impacted approximately 29% of the population of the U.S., according to the latest 2023 statistics, and these numbers continue to rise. Tragically, depression, all too often, results in suicide or attempted suicide, leaving in its path a wave of unspeakable pain and grief forever altering the lives of those left behind. July 18, 2018 would forever mark the lives of Chris Locke and his family when they learned their beautiful 23 year old son Sean had taken his own life, and with no warning. A star athlete with a promising future, and loved by his family and friends, Sean’s private battle with depression would claim his life that day, leaving loved ones shocked and bewildered. Join us as Chris and I talk about his, now, 5 year long journey of how GOD has been restoring his brokenness and turning his pain into a passion for helping young people discover meaning and purpose through the establishment of SL24 Unlocke the Light, and Sean’s House. Suicide deaths continue to rise in the U.S., claiming approximately 49,500 people in 2022. Sadly, this translates into many times that number of survivors left behind to grieve their loved ones. It leaves countless unanswered questions, and lives shattered by the trauma. For Luis and Dora Perez, February 23, 2010 would forever alter their lives as they learned their beautiful 23 year old son, Luis, Jr. had taken his own life. As in so many cases, there were no obvious warning signs or behaviors, intensifying the shock and trauma for parents, siblings, extended family, and friends left behind.
With refreshing transparency, Luis and Dora talk with me about how GOD showed up in their dark journey of pain and disbelief keeping them from despair, and leading them through a season of healing and restoration. You will hear how GOD strategically placed people in their lives to support, encourage, and grieve with them, eventually restoring meaning, purpose, and joy!

Our lives are all marked by seasons. Some, we anticipate with excitement such as marriage, a new career, or the arrival of a child into our life. Then, there are those that ambush us without any warning, leaving us completely unprepared for their devastation, how long they would last, and radically change us. February 14, 2021 marked the beginning of such a season for Sitrena Woodson with an unexpected phone call breaking the news that her beautiful daughter Tiffany had just died of a heart attack at the young age of 37. Transparent and raw, Sitrena's story is one that, I believe, will inspire hope, encouragement, and renewed purpose for others in their own season of grief.

Christmas is a season of joy, festivities, and celebrations with family and friends in our homes, churches and communities that we look forward to for weeks. For Ronaldlyn, however, December 20, 2016 brought the tragic, heartbreaking news that her precious, beautiful son JaKeith had been murdered at the age of 34. We invite you to listen as she shares how this unthinkable loss turned her and her husband's world upside down in a single moment. Two weeks later, unbelievably, tragedy struck again when Ronaldlyn's husband died suddenly from what she believes was Broken Heart Syndrome or Stress Cardiomyopathy. Suddenly Ronaldlyn found herself not only a grieving parent, but also a widow. How does one survive this level of trauma and loss back to back? I believe you'll discover much encouragement as "Ronnie" and I talk about the hope and strength she found in her relationship with Jesus, and now, 8 years later, a life full of meaning and purpose helping other grieving moms through her role with Mending Hearts Ministry.

One of life's greatest treasures and sources of joy is our children. They fill our homes with laughter and sometimes make us so proud we feel like we'll explode. And because they don't come with an instruction book, GOD often teaches us as we try to teach and instruct them. The Bible offers plenty of wisdom for parenting ......... but not so much for losing a child. In this episode, Jimmy Sprayberry and I talk about he and his wife, Sherry's grief journey that began one fall day in October, 2006, when they received a call that their precious 22 year old son, Lee, had been tragically killed in a traffic accident. With emotions tempered by time, Jimmy's transparency and honesty offer a message filled with hope as he shares his personal struggles through years of deep grief to a place of renewed meaning, purpose, and joy through his relationship with Jesus Christ and the love and support of others.

What happens when unthinkable tragedy intersects our dreams, our plans, and our faith? We’re shattered, left in utter disbelief, a state where nothing seems to make any sense.
In this episode, Amy Sylvestre shares the story of her and her family’s journey from a heartbreaking diagnosis several weeks into her second pregnancy requiring a move from their home to a hospital hundreds of miles away. Born months premature, and with only 2 chambers in his heart, their son, Hudson would spend the next 9 months undergoing surgeries and treatment in the only home he would ever know. Transparent and, at times, raw, Amy is candidly honest about the impact of this journey, which sadly ended with Hudson losing that long battle for life, on her mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well being. Listen as Amy shares how she found hope in her relationship with JESUS, and through the love and support of caring friends and family. Amy is now a gifted author, coach, and speaker who dedicates her life to helping others rediscover meaning, purpose and hope on their grief journey.
