Rush has announced the October release of new vinyl editions of 2112 (liquid vinyl) and The Spirit Of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974-1987. The 2112 edition was previously made available exclusively for the UMusic shop in NYC during Rush's Madison Square Garden run, and The Spirit of Radio: Greatest Hits 19741987 will be available on vinyl for the first time as a two-LP set featuring all 16 of the original collections tracks, as well as an abbreviated one-LP, 10-track version. Both editions will be released October 2nd and are now available for pre-order (2112, TSoR Greatest Hits).

Rush opened up their stint in the Big Apple this past week with a pair of epic shows at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Fans for nights 1 and 2 in LA, Fort Worth and Chicago were treated to the same pair of setlists in each city (Setlist A and Setlist B respectively) and they did the same for New York City... almost. They changed things up slightly by swapping Caravan and Headlong Flight between the 2 nights, giving us new A-2 and B-2 setlists. We'll see if they do something similar with the C and D setlists over the last 2 shows. Speaking of which, RushCon will be hosting a Madison Square Garden pre-show party for tomorrow's show at The Rutherford a 3PM, and it's SOLD OUT (but there is a waitlist).

Season 4 of Amazon Prime's Reacher TV series launches on September 16th and a new trailer was just released which features Rush's Tom Sawyer as seen below or on YouTube (thanks Joe A). The show is based on the Jack Reacher novel series by Lee Child, and stars Alan Ritchson as Reacher. The trailer runs over 2 minutes and features Tom Sawyer throughout. Rush wrapped up their 4-night stint at Chicago's United Center last night to yet another sold out crowd. For their Chi-town run they ended up playing the same 4 setlists that they played in LA (and Fort Worth for the first 3 shows). This lends more weight to the notion that the special Setlist G that we saw for the rescheduled 4th Fort Worth show was just a one-off as we'd speculated. That's not to say that we won't see that G set again at some point down the road - it's just not a part of the standard 4-show rotation. That said, after MSG and Toronto they won't have any more 4-night stints, so they'll have to change things up as far as the rotation goes at that point. I'd wager that they'll do something similar to what they did for the pair of Mexico City shows, but we'll have a better idea after they do a few 2-night stints later next month. Now the band takes a much-deserved 6-day break before heading to the Big Apple for another 4-night residency at New York City's Madison Square Garden. RushCon will be hosting a Madison Square Garden pre-show party next Saturday August 1st - the day of the 3rd of 4 MSG shows - with all the details here. The event will take place at The Rutherford a 3PM, and it's SOLD OUT (but there is a waitlist). Rush along with Anika Nilles and Loren Gold, all posted thank you Chicago messages and photos to Instagram following the final show, as seen here.

Rolling Stone has posted a best album list that favors bands with longevity - such as Rush. It's a list of the 50 Best 10th Albums of All Time (thanks RushFanForever) - studio albums only. Only bands that have been around long enough to produce 10 albums are eligible, so that limits the playing field significantly. Rush's 10th studio album was Grace Under Pressure, which came in at #41 on the list:

See the Good is a new celebrity-amplified global anti-hate campaign created in partnership with The Raoul Wallenberg Centre For Human Rights that promotes commonalities without asking people to choose sides. The campaign launched in January, and Rush's Geddy Lee is one of the many celebrities involved. See the Good creates and shares emotionally resonant stories about people on a mission to make the world a better place, and they've already raised over $300K towards their $500K goal to ensure the organization is the most visible and effective campaign against hate. Geddy was featured in a video last month where he tells the story of Doctor Nikolai Amosov, who invented the antithrombotic artificial heart valve in 1965, which would have saved the life of Geddy Lee's father, who died that same year. Yesterday Geddy posted another video (thanks RushFanForever) where he tells the story of Israeli inventor Haim Shtalryd, who created Baby Sense - the first monitor of its kind to watch over sleeping infants and help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Drumeo YouTube channel has a regular feature called First Time where they have drummers listen to a song they've never heard before (without drums), and create a drum part for it. They recently challenged Genesis drummer Nic Collins (son of Phil Collins) for a recent edition of this series, where Collins created a drum part for Opeth's Ghost Of Perdition. In their latest video, they brought back Collins for a new challenge with a twist - instead of having him create a new drum part, they have him try to learn a complex drum part for an existing song on the spot; the song they chose was Rush's 2112. Collins did a great job with it, and took around 2 and a half hours to learn the song. You can watch the entire process unfold below or in this video.

They decided to run a contest of sorts to find the new drummer, documented the entire process, and created a 12-part YouTube show called the Primus Interstellar Drum Derby with the first installment airing on February 20th of this year, about a month after they announced that the winner was Louisiana-based drummer John Hoffman (Hoffman is featured in the May issue of Modern Drummer). Hoffman beat out co-finalist Gergo Borlai to win as documented in the 12th and final episode of the series, with Borlai possibly losing because he didn't like Rush (blasphemy!). Well Hoffman sure as hell has no problem with Rush, and he along with his new bandmates Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde hung out with Geddy Lee earlier this week in Toronto as Hoffman details in this Instagram post:

A mysterious new project spearheaded by the Rheostatics' Dave Bidini and involving Rush's Alex Lifeson will be seeing the light of day this coming November. According to some social media posts from Bidini and others involved, the project held a listening party yesterday at Toronto's Noble Street Studios. The project was first introduced via an Instagram post back in early March teasing a project called The Great Lakes Suite, and depicting an image of the Great Lakes region with some ethereal backing music, and a list of the people involved; Dave Bidini, Dave Clark, Hugh Marsh, and Martin Tielli of the Rheostatics, along with BNL's Kevin Hearn (also a member of the Rheostatics), Don Kerr and Alex Lifeson. Alex also spoke a little about the project in a few of his interviews promoting Envy of None's Stygian Wavz. In a March AllMusic.com interview, Alex said the following:

Part of the reason they chose Hoffman over Borlai might have been because Borlai was not a fan of Rush. In the video at about the 11:30 mark, Borlai is chatting with Claypool and calls Rush vanilla and cheesy (thanks Mike S). Later on around the 42 minute mark, the whole band is dining with Borlai, and he admits that he thinks he won't get the gig because he doesn't like Rush, and offers to learn some Rush songs overnight to impress the guys. Les tells him to learn Cygnus-X1, and Borlai pulls out his phone to listen to the song.

That's coming out next. And Epiphone has a few things they want to release; they'd like to do a reissue of the ES-335, and Gibson wants to do an acoustic and some other things. On the pedal front, we have the [Lerxst] By-Tor and the Snowdog. We're working on a chorus and probably a delay. I have some ideas about an amp pedal, you know, incorporating what we do with the Lerxst amps but in a smaller enclosure. So yeah... there's always something in the world of gear. I've always been a gearhead! ..."

Legendary American filmmaker David Lynch passed away this past week at the age of 78. The filmmaker was famous for the surrealist, dreamlike qualities of his work, which includes Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway and many more. Lynch's films were a source of entertainment to Rush throughout their early touring days, and the band even had an Eraserhead poster on the wall of Le Studio as seen in this iconic photo that Geddy shared via Instagram yesterday:

Earlier this week, Rush fans across the world commemorated the life of Neil Peart on the 5th anniversary of his passing back on January 7, 2020. To commemorate the occasion, Rush tribute band YYNOT hosted their 3rd annual Bubba Bash in celebration of The Professor at the Keswick Theatre outside Philly (Glenside, PA) this past Saturday evening. The show was hosted by Cathy Rankin, and featured YYNOT along with special guests Frank Bello (Anthrax), Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall, Overkill, etc.), Jon Dinklage (Clockwork Angels string ensemble), Joe Bergamini (drum instructor, author, etc.), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Seven Antonopoulos (Opiate for the Masses), Randy Jackson (Zebra) and others. All proceeds from the show go to benefit Cedars Sinai Hospital, and you can send along your donation here. Back in the summer of 2021, Neil Peart's extensive classic car collection - dubbed the Silver Surfers by Neil himself - was sold at Gooding & Company's 17th annual Pebble Beach Auctions. Just before the auction, it was revealed via an announcement at Rush.com that this collection of classic cars was the subject of a coffee table book that Neil Peart was working on prior to his untimely passing nearly 5 years ago. Since that initial announcement very little additional information had surfaced until this past January when the book's May 2024 release date and cover were revealed. The book release was then subsequently delayed a couple of times in the interim, but it will finally be seeing the light of day this upcoming week, with an official release slated for Tuesday. Neil Peart's 2004 BMW R1200GS motorcycle will be up for bidding in an upcoming Mecum Auction in the new year. The Auction will take place during the 34th annual Vintage & Antique Motorcycle Auction in Las Vegas on January 29-February 1. The bike was ridden on Rush's R40 Anniversary Tour and ultimately sold to a member of the tour's road crew. The winning bidder will also receive the original purchase receipt signed by Neil, along with 2 Neil Peart drum sticks. The bike is expected to sell in the $40-$50K range. Today is a bittersweet day for Rush fans as we recognize our 5th September 12th without Neil Peart. Neil was taken from us back on January 7, 2020 after a long battle with glioblastoma. Today would have been his 72nd birthday. For the past 4 years, on Neil's birthday, RUSHfest Scotland has sponsored the release of an album of Rush songs dedicated to the iconic drummer titled TRIBUTES - SONGS FOR NEIL, played by Rush tribute bands and musicians from around the world. Henderson Brewing Company in Toronto hosted their 2nd annual Rush Day event 2 Sundays ago at the brewery's Toronto location, and from all reports the event was a huge success. As part of the celebration, the Brewery partnered with Anansi Press to sponsor the release of a new book titled Toronto In 100 Beers featuring a foreword from Rush's Alex Lifeson. The book is now available to purchase via the Indigo website or at Amazon.com and other retailers. Metallica brought their M72 tour to Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton last night and guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo paid tribute to Rush during their nightly doodle session, where they designate a few minutes in each set to lead a singalong of a popular song by an artist local to whichever city/country the band is in. Guitarist Chris Herin of Detroit-based prog rockers Tiles will be releasing his debut solo album Hiding In Plain Sight this coming November via The Laser's Edge, and one of the guest musicians on the album is Rush's Alex Lifeson, as first mentioned in this post from last summer. Alex plays on a track titled Second Ending which also features vocalist Matthew Parmenter of Detroit-based band Discipline. Some other notable guests on the album are Doane Perry, Michael Sadler, Peter Frampton, Kim Mitchell, and Crown Lands. Tiles has several connections with Rush, most notably their producer - former Rush producer Terry Brown - who also produced Hiding In Plain Sight. Brown introduced Lifeson to the band's work back in the 2000s and Lifeson ended up guesting on their 2008 Fly Paper album, adding guitar tracks to the song Sacred and Mundane. Legendary British blues pioneer John Mayall passed away earlier this week at the age of 90. Mayall will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year. He is credited with helping develop the English style of rhythm and blues that played an important role in the blues revival of the 1960s, with his influential band the Bluesbreakers being a training ground for Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood and many other superstars. He was also a huge influence on Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, the latter of whom guested on Mayall's 2019 album Nobody Told Me. Geddy Lee brought his My Effin' Life: In Conversation spoken word tour to Quebec this past weekend for a pair of special one-off shows at the Grand Théâtre de Québec as part of the Quebec City Summer Festival. The shows took place at 1PM and 4PM respectively in the 500-seat Salle Octave-Crémazie room with Canadian model and television host Genevieve Borne as the guest host, and Jason Rockman (thanks RushFanForever) running the fan Q&A portion. Collins produced more Rush albums than any other producer outside of Terry Brown, starting with Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, and then another stint producing Counterparts and Test for Echo. According to an Amazon listing, Alex Lifeson's 1996 solo album Victor will be reissued this coming August as a special double vinyl release. The album is currently listed as an import only on Amazon US, although it's expected that it will also get a domestic release as well as internationally. The listings should start to reflect that over the coming days/weeks. Little is known about the reissue at this point, but from the listings, there is updated cover art (most likely created by FANTOONS) and both CD and Vinyl versions will be available. The late Neil Peart grew up in the St. Catharines, Ontario community of Port Dalhousie, the lakefront home of Lakeside Park which inspired the lyrics to the 1975 Rush song of the same name. Back in 2020 the St. Catharines City Council, with the full support of the community, voted to name the newly rebuilt pavilion at Lakeside Park the Neil Peart Pavilion at Lakeside Park in honor of the hometown icon who passed away over 4 years ago no in January of 2020. The Council also established the Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, with the objective to commission a public work of art commemorating Peart's life and legacy. Back in January of 2021 the Task Force officially began welcoming artists to submit requests for pre-qualification via the city's website, and revealed the finalists in September of 2021 along with the launch of a fundraising campaign for the Memorial. In November of 2022 the Task Force finally revealed that the artist who will have the honor of creating the memorial is Morgan MacDonald of The Newfoundland Bronze Foundry. The installation itself will depict two bronze statues of Peart - one as a young artist and the other in his later years. A pathway will connect the two statues with interpretive panels about Peart's personal and professional legacy. The project and its timelines are contingent on the Task Force raising the $1 million required for completion, and donations of any size can be made online at stcatharines.ca/neilpeart. Geddy Lee's My Effin' Life: In Conversation spoken word tour ended this past December, but as reported in this article in the Le Soleil (French language publication in Quebec), Geddy will be bringing the tour to Quebec City for a special one-off show at the Grand Théâtre de Québec as part of the Quebec City Summer Festival on July 13th. The event will take place in the 500-seat Salle Octave-Crémazie room, and 148 VIP tickets that include an autographed copy of his memoir will be made available. Tickets are $57 CAD ($140 VIP) and went on sale earlier this morning at this location. There aren't a lot of details yet, but from the information available, it looks like the show will be similar to Geddy's prior appearances, with a guest interviewer, Fan Q&A and fans receiving a copy of the book. Back in February, prog-fusion supergroup Trifecta announced the release of their 2nd album The New Normal due out tomorrow, April 12th on KScope records. The album features Trifecta's core of former Steven Wilson alums Nick Beggs, Craig Blundell and Adam Holzman, along with guest appearances from Rush's Alex Lifeson and fellow Steven Wilson alumnus Theo Travis. Actor Joe Flaherty passed away this past week at the age of 82. Flaherty was best known for his work on the Canadian sketch comedy SCTV from 1976 to 1984, as Harold Weir on Freaks and Geeks, and for his role as Donald the heckler in Happy Gilmore. Most Rush fans remember Joe as Count Floyd on SCTV, a role he would reprise for a short film that Rush played on the Grace Under Pressure tour leading into The Weapon as seen in this video. Flaherty's role on the short-lived NBC comedy Freaks and Geeks also included a Rush reference in one scene with actor Jason Segal (playing Nick), as seen here. Rush posted a short tribute to Flaherty via Instagram, saying the following:

Back in the summer of 2021, Neil Peart's extensive classic car collection - dubbed the Silver Surfers by Neil himself - was sold at Gooding & Company's 17th annual Pebble Beach Auctions. Just before the auction, it was revealed via an announcement at Rush.com that this collection of classic cars was the subject of a coffee table book that Neil Peart was working on prior to his untimely passing 4 years ago. Since that initial announcement very little additional information had surfaced, until this past January when the book's May 2024 release date and cover were revealed. However, it looks like fans will need to wait a little longer for the release, as both Amazon and the Rush Backstage Club are now saying the book won't arrive until early September. This past Monday, March 18th marked the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Canadian release of Rush's debut album on Moon Records. The album was then re-released on Mercury/Polygram (with the revised pink logo) later that year on August 10, 1974. In 1995 it was given Gold status by the RIAA, and a 40th anniversary Rush Rediscovered vinyl box set was released in 2014. Neil Peart was tragically taken from us back on January 7, 2020 after a long battle with glioblastoma. For the past 3 years, on Neil's birthday, RUSHfest Scotland has sponsored the release of an album of Rush songs dedicated to the iconic drummer titled TRIBUTES - SONGS FOR NEIL, played by Rush tribute bands and musicians from around the world. Proceeds from sales of the albums were split equally between two charities - Glioblastoma Foundation Neil Peart Research Award in the USA and Cancer Support Scotland (registered charity SC012867). They are continuing the tradition this year with SONGS FOR NEIL VOL. 4, which will release this coming September 12th in celebration of what would have been Neil's 71st birthday. This fourth volume includes a special track titled Masterpiece which was written and performed by Neil's brother Danny Peart along with guitarist Brandon Dyke. Other tribute bands included on the album are Solar Federation from the U.S., Fleesh from Brazil, Scotland's Clockwork Angels, and even Ninja Sex Party, who added their rendition of Madrigal to the collection (full track listing here). Rush's Alex Lifeson has a small role in the new Canadian horror film The Breach, which is based on a book by horror novelist Nick Cutter (aka Craig Davidson) with the screenplay co-written by him and Ian Weir. The film was directed by Mexican-Canadian Rodrigo Gudiño, and produced by Toronto's Hangar 18 Media with Guns 'N Roses guitarist Slash as an executive producer. It was filmed in Parry Sound, ON during September 2020 with an all-Canadian cast and crew, and starring Allan Hawco, Natalie Brown, Emily Alatalo and Wesley French, and Rush's Alex Lifeson. The film is set in the tiny Northern Ontario town of Lone Crow and follows Police Chief John Hawkins as he tries to solve a mysterious murder case. Alex Lifeson plays the role of conspiracy theorist named Alex and appears briefly in the film's trailer starting around the 1:05 mark. Alex is on a Zoom call explaining the origins of the mystery to someone, and says:

Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett announced earlier today that he is launching a new podcast about all things guitar called Shred With Shifty. The show will be produced by Double Elvis, and feature Shiflett asking his guitar-playing guests about their musical history and inspirations. The Toronto Blue Jays welcomed baseball fans back to the newly-renovated Rogers Centre in Toronto yesterday for their home opener against the Detroit Tigers. To celebrate the 2023 season and the new renovations, the Blue Jays and Sportsnet produced a new hype video for fans which uses Rush's Closer to the Heart as background music with Geddy Lee narrating. You can watch the video below or at this location. It's no secret that Rush's Geddy Lee is a huge baseball fan, and that his hometown Jays are his favorite team. He has season tickets and can usually be spotted right behind home plate at most home games, as he was yesterday. 10 years ago he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Jays' 2013 home opener as described in this post, and in the shortened 2020 COVID season, the Jays put a cutout of Geddy in the stands at their temporary home in Buffalo.

Back in January of last year, Rush teamed up with pinball machine company Stern Pinball to release a line of Rush pinball machines. The machines were a huge hit, garnering accolades from both Rush fans and pinball aficionados, and can now be found in game rooms across the country. This Week in Pinball hosted their 6th annual TWIPY Pinball Awards yesterday evening at the Texas Pinball Festival, and Stern Pinball's line of Rush machines took home the big prize, being named Game of the Year! The late Neil Peart grew up in the St. Catharines, Ontario community of Port Dalhousie, the lakefront home of Lakeside Park which inspired the lyrics to the 1975 Rush song of the same name. Back in 2020 the St. Catharines City Council, with the full support of the community, voted to name the newly rebuilt pavilion at Lakeside Park the Neil Peart Pavilion at Lakeside Park in honor of the hometown icon who passed away over 3 years ago no in January of 2020. The Council also established the Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, with the objective to commission a public work of art commemorating Peart's life and legacy. Back in January of 2021 the Task Force officially began welcoming artists to submit requests for pre-qualification via the city's website, and revealed the finalists in September of 2021 along with the launch of a fundraising campaign for the Memorial. This past November the Task Force finally revealed that the artist who will have the honor of creating the memorial is Morgan MacDonald of The Newfoundland Bronze Foundry. The project and its timelines are contingent on the Task Force raising the $1 million required for completion, and donations of any size can be made online at stcatharines.ca/neilpeart. Neil Peart's sisters Judy and Nancy and the Peart Family Memorial Fund have been helping to raise funds for the Memorial with a number of charity events over the past few months that they've dubbed their Legacy in Bronze Campaign. The latest of these fundraising events will take place tomorrow evening from 8-11PM at The Rockhouse in St. John's, Newfoundland. The event will include a performance by local Rush tribute band Limelight, a silent auction, door prizes and more. The Peart sisters along with MacDonald and Limelight band member Erin O'Mara were recently interviewed by NTV's Rosie Mullaley to promote the event, and you can watch the video news story at this location. The Super Bowl took place this past weekend, and the Chiefs ended up on top after a close-fought game with the Eagles. There were plenty of great commercials too - which many Americans pay closer attention to than the game itself. One of those commercials featured Dave Grohl pimping Canadian Crown Royal whiskey, and thanking Canada for all its contributions to the world ... starting with Rush. Towards the beginning of the commercial they show Dave flipping through some LP records of Canadian artists, and he says, "Thanks for legends of music...", and the first one he comes across is a Rush LP (a fake import of some kind). The Today Show previewed some Super Bowl commercials during yesterday's broadcast, including one for Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey featuring Dave Grohl where he thanks Canada for all its contributions to the world. One of those contributions to the world that he mentions is Rush, as seen in this video at around the 15-second mark. They show Dave flipping through some LP records of Canadian artists, including Rush, and saying, "Thanks for legends of music..." The Bob Moog Foundation is running a raffle contest where the winner will get a fully-restored, vintage Minimoog synthesizer signed by Rush's Geddy Lee. Rush used Moog synths extensively in the '70s and '80s, most famously on their 1981 hit Tom Sawyer, and Geddy wrote the following line beside his signature on the Minimoog: "This device is a modern-day warrior". This particular Minimoog is serial number 4070, and was built at Moog Music's Williamsville, NY factory almost exactly 49 years ago, on February 14, 1974. Despite a few minor cosmetic flaws commensurate with a vintage instrument, it is otherwise in excellent technical condition with an estimated value of $10K. The raffle kicked off earlier this week and will run through Noon on February 27th EST, or when all 10,000 of the available tickets run out. Raffle tickets are $25 each, five for $100, 12 for $200, or 35 for $500, with all proceeds going to benefit the charitable efforts of the Bob Moog Foundation. Canadian singer-songwriter, visual artist and activist Mendelson Joe passed away earlier this week at the age of 78. Mendelson Joe was a longtime friend of Rush, and opened a few Canadian shows for the band back in the mid '70s. Geddy Lee also convinced Rush's label Anthem Records to release his 1988 album Born To Cuddle because he thought it was great, and his 1991 follow-up Addicted was also released on Anthem (thanks RushFanForever). Toronto-based progressive blues-rock duo Crown Lands consists of drummer/singer Cody Bowles and guitarist Kevin Comeau, who bonded over their shared obsession with Rush several years ago and formed Crown Lands shortly after. The duo released their self-titled debut album in 2020, and were named Breakthrough Group of the Year at the 2021 JUNO Awards, with the album also being nominated for Rock Album of the Year. The pair make no secret regarding their obsession with Rush - the Crowns Lands album includes a 10-part song with sections referencing Rush's work titled Context: Fearless Pt. 1. They made a demo of the song with former Rush producer Terry Brown, and later worked on the track with Nick Raskulinecz, co-producer of Rush's last 2 albums, and David Bottrill (who remixed Rush's Vapor Trails album). The pair also joined Alex Lifeson and others as part of an ensemble performance of a Led Zeppelin medley at the 2021 Andy Kim Christmas show. The duo announced last week that they will be releasing their sophomore album Fearless in March, with the centerpiece of the album being an epic, 18-minute, 10-part, Rush-inspired (part 1 is titled Overture!) track titled Starlifter: Fearless Pt. II, which continues the story of Fearless, as Comeau explained to BraveWords.com:

Last year's award went to Maxx Rinkus, who was presented with the scholarship back in March via video by Peart's widow Carrie Nuttall-Peart, Modern Drummer CEO David Frangioni, educator Dom Famularo and Dennis Wolfe of Universal Music. Earlier this week, Modern Drummer announced that the application for the 2023 Neil Peart Spirit of Drumming Scholarship is now open, and they will be accepting submissions up through March 28th. The scholarship provides the recipient with 52 weeks of free drum lessons, a 1-year subscription to Modern Drummer All Access, and a selection of Modern Drummer merchandise. The late Neil Peart grew up in the St. Catharines, Ontario community of Port Dalhousie, the lakefront home of Lakeside Park which inspired the lyrics to the 1975 Rush song of the same name. Back in 2020 the St. Catharines City Council, with the full support of the community, voted to name the newly rebuilt pavilion at Lakeside Park the Neil Peart Pavilion at Lakeside Park in honor of the hometown icon who passed away in January of 2020. The Council also established the Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, with the objective to commission a public work of art commemorating Peart's life and legacy. Back in January of 2021 the Task Force officially began welcoming artists to submit requests for pre-qualification via the city's website, and revealed the finalists in September of 2021 along with the launch of a fundraising campaign for the Memorial. This past November the Task Force finally revealed that the artist who will have the honor of creating the memorial is Morgan MacDonald of The Newfoundland Bronze Foundry. The project and its timelines are contingent on the Task Force raising the $1 million required for completion, and donations of any size can be made online at stcatharines.ca/neilpeart. They are also opening up pre-orders for more of their very popular, Rush-themed Lakeside Park t-shirts that they first revealed back in 2020; the original run of these shirts helped the Task Force raise over $20K. They will be accepting pre-orders for the t-shirts via ptdalhousie.com up through February 17th, and then hope to start shipping out the shirts in early March. The sooner the Task Force can achieve its fundraising objectives, the sooner the community and fans will be able to see the results. So give if you can.

Earlier this month and for the third year in a row, Dave Grohl and producer/multi-instrumentalist Greg Kurstin hosted their virtual Hanukkah Sessions all-star celebrity concert to raise funds for the Anti-Defamation League. The concert took place on December 5th at Los Angeles' Largo nightclub in front of a live audience, and included performances from Jack Black, Beck, Pink, Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O, Inara George and Grohl's daughter Violet, with Judd Apatow acting as host. The pair then released one performance from the show every night of Hanukkah last week, and the performance from the seventh night featured a cover of Rush's The Spirit of Radio with some help from Jack Black. A new documentary from filmmaker Ron Chapman titled Revival 69: The Concert That Rocked the World was released in September. After a few film festival screenings this fall, the movie officially opened in theaters across Canada this past weekend. One of those showings took place last Saturday at Toronto's Hot Docs Cinema, and included a Q&A led be Alan Cross with director Ron Chapman, Rush's Geddy Lee (attended the festival), Robby Kreiger (via Zoom) and John Bower (concert promoter). A Night for Neil: The Neil Peart Memorial Celebration concert and charity fundraiser took place back in October at the Meridian Centre in Neil Peart's hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario. The event had originally been planned to take place in May of 2020, but was postponed several times since due to the uncertainty surrounding travel restrictions in Canada brought on by the Pandemic. The proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales for the event ended up raising over $40K for Royal Victoria Health Care Centre's cancer centre and other Ontario health care facilities, with the funds going to four cancer treatment centers in Ontario, each receiving $10,000. Neil Peart's sister Nancy Peart Burkholder and other family members accepted the check on behalf of the RVH foundation earlier this week at the newly named Neil Peart Pavilion in St. Catharines, as described in this article:

Rush tribute band YYNOT has announced a charity concert dubbed Bubba Bash 2023 that will take place on Saturday, January 7 at the Keswick Theatre outside Philly (Glenside, PA). YYNOT has made a name for itself in recent years for being one of the premier Rush tribute bands, as well as a great prog-rock band in their own right with 3 albums of original material under their belt. The show will be "In Celebration of Neil Peart", and feature YYNOT along with special guests Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, etc.), Frank Bello (Anthrax), Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall, Overkill, etc.), Jon Dinklage (Clockwork Angels string ensemble), Joe Bergamini (drum instructor, author, etc.), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), and Seven Antonopoulos (Opiate for the Masses). Back in September of last year, Geddy Lee announced via Instagram that he was working on a memoir with a planned release via Harper Collins in the Fall of 2022. He later clarified via a Classic Rock interview back in April that the book would instead probably release sometime in the spring, and we now have some clarification on that. The publisher's website now has a listing for the as-yet-untitled memoir, and it gives a tentative release date of May 16, 2023. The listing indicates that the book will be around 400 pages and available as a hardcover or as an e-book. There's also a listing on Amazon where you can pre-order the hardcover for $35 and the e-book for $17.99. Amazon also shows a CD option for $39.99 but it's not clear what that includes. Canadian indie rock band the Rheostatics will be playing a series of 3 shows next week at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern as part of the venue's 75th anniversary celebration. Rheostatics frontman Dave Bidini announced via this Facebook post last night that Rush's Alex Lifeson will be sitting in with the band for the Thursday, November 24th show. The announcement shows a photo of Alex with the caption, "This guy joining Rheos next Thursday at Horseshoe. Some tickets still left." Lifeson is a longtime friend of Bidini, and has performed with the Rheostatics on several occasions in recent years, with the most recent being back in 2019 as part of a fundraiser for Bidini's community newspaper the West End Phoenix. UPDATE - 11/15@4:38PM: Several readers noted that neither the Harper Collins nor Amazon listing for the book explicitly state that Geddy Lee is the author. However, both listings were found in the first place by doing a search for Geddy Lee on those respective sites. Searching the Harper Collins site gets these results, which show the book listed alongside Geddy's Book of Bass and a few other items that have references to Geddy (author Beth Evans's work for instance). And searching Amazon under the books category also will yield search results that include the Memoir. Everything else fits too; the ISBN numbers in the 2 listings match, the release date jibes with the expected Spring 2023 date, the Amazon bestseller categories the book is included in (Rock Music, Rock Band Biographies, Memoirs, etc.) make sense, etc. I'm sure the listings will get fleshed out as we get closer to the actual release date - including a description, cover art, etc. Stay tuned.

The Council also established the Neil Peart Commemorative Task Force, with the objective to commission a public work of art commemorating Peart's life and legacy. Back in January of last year the Task Force officially began welcoming artists to submit requests for pre-qualification via the city's website, and revealed the finalists back in September of last year along with the launch of a fundraising campaign for the Memorial. Earlier this week the Task Force finally revealed that the artist who will have the honor of creating the memorial is Morgan MacDonald of The Newfoundland Bronze Foundry. Seth MacFarlane's American Dad! is an animated sitcom that originally aired on FOX, but has called TBS home since 2014. The show is currently in its 19th season, and the latest episode (Season 19, Episode 16 - I Heard You Wanna Buy Some Speakers) included a lengthy Rush reference. In the episode, Barry blows out his dad's speakers and asks Snot for help. Snot then takes Barry to see Roger (as his audiophile persona Wally) who proceeds to show off his own killer speaker system. When the pair arrive, Roger asks Barry what album he brought to listen to. Barry didn't bring anything so Roger takes matters into his own hands and pulls out a copy of Rush's debut album and says, "I feel stupid for even asking, but you guys are huge Rush fans, yes?". He then drops the needle on Working Man to start things off, listens for a while and then insists they also listen to the song on cassette, CD, and 8-track. Doors guitarist Robby Krieger and the Medlock-Krieger Foundation hosted their Medlock-Krieger Golf, Art Show & Guitars charity event earlier this week in Los Angeles. The event was held in memory of Scott Medlock, who passed away from cancer last year. Medlock and Krieger were longtime friends, and had hosted their annual Scott Medlock-Robby Krieger Golf Classic and All-Star Concert annually for over a decade up until Medlock's passing last year. Rush's Alex Lifeson has been a regular participant in that event over the years, with his most recent appearance being back in 2018, and he also took part in this past week's festivities. The event kicked off Monday evening with a concert at Bogie's Westlake Village Inn, and Lifeson sat in for a few songs, including this 8-minute jam of Santana's Evil Ways with Krieger and vocalist Andy Vargas. There was also a golf tournament portion of the event on Tuesday at the Moorpark Country Club. This year's event benefited the Pat Tillman Foundation and the Colontown/PalTown Development Foundation & Cancer Support Community. The Cars' Elliot Easton also participated in the event and posted this photo of himself and Alex backstage to Instagram.

Grapes for Humanity is an organization that helps to raise funds to benefit humanitarian causes around the world with the assistance of the international wine community, and Geddy Lee is a member of the board of directors. This week the charity is hosting their 2022 Grapes for Climate Change online fundraiser auction to raise funds to aid in the battle against the threat of climate change. The proceeds will benefit Nature Conservancy Canada, and Tree Canada, along with global communities in need. The auction kicked off this past Wednesday evening via Waddington's, and will run through next Wednesday, October 19th. Last Tuesday evening The Foo Fighters hosted the second of two tribute concerts for their late drummer Taylor Hawkins; the first having taken place at Wembley Stadium in London back on September 3rd. This second concert was held at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, and served as the US-based counterpart to the epic, 6-hour London-based event. That London concert included reunions of the James Gang, The Pretenders, and Them Crooked Vultures, along with performances from members of Van Halen, AC/DC, Queen, Oasis, The Police and - most importantly for Rush fans - Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. Geddy and Alex made a return appearance for the LA concert, performing the same 3 songs they performed in London, albeit with a couple of different drummers. Dirk and Lerxst took the stage towards the end of the show after an introduction from Jack Black, and then performed 2112: Overture with Dave Grohl on drums just as they did at the London show, but for Working Man they swapped in drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, then finished off with YYZ with Tool's Danny Carey behind the kit. Today is a bittersweet day for Rush fans as we recognize our 3rd September 12th without Neil Peart. Neil was taken from us back on January 7, 2020 after a long battle with glioblastoma. Today would have been his 70th birthday. For the past 2 years, on Neil's birthday, RUSHfest Scotland has sponsored the release of an album of Rush songs dedicated to the iconic drummer titled TRIBUTES - SONGS FOR NEIL, played by Rush tribute bands and musicians from around the world. Proceeds from sales of the albums were split equally between two charities - Glioblastoma Foundation Neil Peart Research Award in the USA and Cancer Support Scotland (registered charity SC012867). They are continuing the tradition this year with SONGS FOR NEIL VOL. 3, releasing today in celebration of Neil's birthday, and featuring a unique cover design and gatefold from longtime Rush album artist Hugh Syme. The album includes 23 Rush songs covered by artists from around the world including - Clockwork Angels (Scotland), David Barrett (Canada), Leoni Jane Kennedy (England), Lotus Land (USA) and featuring special guest appearances by Terry Brown and Darren Redick (Planet Rock). As before, all profits from sales of this album will be going to Cancer Support Scotland in the UK and the Glioblastoma Foundation Neil Peart Research Award in the US. The first of two planned tribute concerts for the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins took place this past weekend at Wembley Stadium in London, and Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson along with dozens of other members of rock royalty participated in the event. Alex and Geddy took the stage about 3 and a half hours into the epic, 6-hour show, and played 2112: Overture and Working Man with Dave Grohl on drums, then finished off with YYZ with Omar Hakim on stick duty. Dave introduced them with the following words, referring to the time Taylor sat in on drums with Ged and Al for YYZ during a Foo Fighters show in Toronto back in 2008:

Gibson Guitars' philanthropic arm Gibson Gives is teaming up with the rock community to raise money and awareness for the Ukraine Relief effort via a Guitars for Peace charity auction where they will be selling off a limited edition run of four Les Paul Custom electric guitars. Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson will be one of the many performers to participate in a pair of Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts this month - the first of which will take place tomorrow in London at Wembley Stadium beginning at 11:30AM EST (5:30PM CEST). The second concert will take place in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum on September 27th. Tomorrow's show will be available for streaming worldwide on Paramount+ (US only), MTV YouTube channels (Globally), and Pluto TV internationally. There will also be a 1-hour TV special edit of the London show airing on CBS in the US at 9PM EST tomorrow evening, along with a 2-hour TV edit airing later in September on MTV globally. No streaming information is available for the September 27th show in LA yet, but it's expected that those details will be released closer to the concert date later this month. Former Lifer guitarist/vocalist Aaron Fink released his new solo album Dear Universe today, and it includes a song featuring an Alex Lifeson solo titled Forever is Yours. Lifeson has known Fink for over 20 years and produced Lifer's 2001 self-titled debut album. Fink mentions the Lifeson collaboration in this making of video at about the 5:40 mark. Alex Lifeson's Envy of None project with Andy Curran, guitarist Alfio Annibalini and vocalist Maiah Wynne released their self-titled, debut album back in April, and it's currently available for purchase and streaming worldwide via several different online retailers and services, including Amazon and the official Envy of None merch store. In the weeks leading up to the April release of the album, Envy of None and Epiphone launched a contest where the winner would get an Alex Lifeson Signature Les Paul Axcess Standard electric guitar. To enter the contest, fans needed to scan the QR code hidden inside the Deluxe Edition of the album. Alex Lifeson made a couple of interview appearances this past week where he discussed his long career in Rush and his many side projects, including Envy of None, last week's South Park 25th anniversary show, the upcoming Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts and more. On Tuesday, Gibson Guitars opened up their Gibson Garage in Nashville an hour early to media and music fans for a special charity event which featured Alex. Some video from the event is available online, and you can watch most of Alex's interview below or on YouTube. There was also a local news story about the event that includes some video of Alex which you can watch here, and a great write-up of the event from The Tennessean. Gibson also posted some nice photos along with a kind message for Alex to their Facebook page. The event helped to support music artists and programs at Children's Hospital-Vanderbilt and Room in the Inn which offer vital services to the local Nashville community. Alex's other interview took place this past Monday where he was a guest on the Craig Charles show on BBC 6 Music. At one point Craig asked him about he and Geddy playing together at the South Park 25th anniversary show and what - if any - implications that might have for the pair working together as Rush or something else in the future:
