This past weekend of racing brought delays at Oaklawn Park and late scratches at Turfway Park, but it also showcased a breakout performance in the Rebel Stakes, where Coal Battle overcame the inside post and scored his third straight victory under jockey Juan Vargas.
Road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby – The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes – By Eric Solomon
The second of three important stops on the Derby Trail in South Florida is the Fountain of Youth Stakes, going 1 1/16 miles. Burnham Square was best in the Holy Bull and he’s facing stiffer competition in this race today.
This is a race that Tim Tam put on the map all the way back in 1958. He would win this race on his way to winning the Run for the Roses that year. Kauai King, Spectacular Bid, Thunder Gulch, and Orb, have also used this race to springboard themselves to Derby victories. Dornoch, Union Rags, and Bet Twice all won this race and also won the Belmont Stakes.
Road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby – The Grade 3 Gotham Stakes – By Eric Solomon
Until the Virginia Derby was re-positioned on the calendar, the Gotham Stakes was the lone, one turn race that offered Derby Points in North America. This one mile contest is typically a fascinating better race, but it’s a race that has had little impact on the Kentucky Derby this century. This year, the three shortest priced runners in this Grade 3 field were all bred in New York. Post time for this race, which is the first of three Derby Points Races, is scheduled for 4:18 (ET)

I have to say this is a great honor for me to welcome Marshall Graham in for plus for the Breeders' Cup.MarshallWell, I appreciate it. Excited to to talk Breeders Cup. I was a plus subscriber the year I won and it you know I consumed all the materials and I think it's very worth worthwhile. And again, excited for all the offerings this year um to help my handicapping. Hopefully we'll get we'll get a little lucky again.MPWell, anybody that knows you and that listens to the the different podcasts and some of the things that that you've done know that you're a big dirt handicapper, a guy that that favors dirt racing over the turf racing. And so I thought, well, no better sequence to look at for this Breeders Cup, the all dirt pick for on Saturday and it involves four races Saturday, the the distaff, the classic, the sprint and the dirt mile.MPMarshall, I know you're a big dirt guy. So talk about how much you favor the dirt racing over the turf.MarshallWell, I just I think everyone is ultimately a specialist specialist and ah you know, dirt routes are probably the races that I'm most comfortable with. I think that we have good, you know, part of it is there's You know, a lot of the things that I like about handicapping in terms of pedigree, in terms of speed and pace figures ah can really be applied to dirt racing, ah the can really be applied to dirt racing, turf racing. The timing isn't as good. The the fractionals seem to mean is to seem to mean less. Trip is very important. And I don't get a chance to watch a ton of races.So um so you know just the sort of flow of dirt racing is much more understandable to me. I feel like I could hit pause at the top of the stretch in a dirt race and have a very good idea of what is going to happen based on the dynamics of a race. In a turf race, it's often you hit pause and have absolutely no clue, even despite what the clock might say.So um So that's why dirt racing is for me. I mean, um i tend to I tend to more or less shy away from these multi-race wagers um because it involves being right so many times. It's also important to to to structure tickets very well. It's hard enough often for me to pick one versus pick four, but um I will support it because it is a because it's a dirt sequence. And I think that, you know, in the Breeders' Cup, there's just a chance to take a lot of different stabs. And if I have an opinion, I want to figure out a way to sort of shape my opinion over all sorts of different, different wagers. So I'm excited about it. It's in some way, it's interesting to me that they did not make this a dirt pick five, ah given that they could have easily just thrown in the Fillion Bear Sprint. But they decided to go the pick four route, and I think it's an interesting sequence.MPAbsolutely. And it's 50 cent minimum. But there's so many choices on Breeders' Cup weekend. And there's all kind of pick fives, pick fours. You can play, ah obviously, rolling doubles, rolling pick threes. So a pick four that that focuses on the dirt race is obviously straight up your alley. And we'll we'll dig a little bit into the sequence here. I think the biggest favorite on on the weekend is certainly going to be in the Distaff with the Thorpedo Anna. She's 4 to five on the morning line, I would think. And we're starting the the dirt sequence with her. A lot of your play, I would think, has to hinge on whether you're for or against her and how you would structure your play definitely is going to hinge on your opinion of her in the race.MarshallYeah, there's no doubt. I think that's the key to creating a ticket. I think she's the most likely winner. She's maybe the most likely winner of the past few Breeders Cups. I think four to five would be a gift. I just don't see how she's that high. I mean, it seems on paper like she should be two to five.I was you know there were think she has a lot of question marks coming into this race. I think that in terms of my play in the pick four, I'm going to make a stand against the Travers.I think that figure was too high. If you take it on face value, her 111 in the Travers makes her one of the fastest fillies of um in recent memory. And it makes her you know basically as fast as is is one of the faster fillies of all time and as fast as fillies when the drug rules were much more liberal.um where steroids were legal, and so and steroids especially had a profound effect on fillies and mares. I don't you know think racing is fairly clean right now. you know I'm not casting any aspirations. I'm that casting the aspirations the um my point really is that it's such an obscene and huge number ah that I find it hard to be believed. I mean, it implies that Dornoch ran his race, ah given they gave him over 100. They gave Sierra Leone a 109, a fierceness of 112. So I'm not buying that race right as a 111. I also thought her cotillion was a fairly big regression. She barely won. ah She ran sort of a substandard buyer for her.So my question is, are they going to the well once too often? And so I'm going to make this play in part against the Travers Fig, and I'm going to play against her um for a smaller ticket, and then consider coming back and using her on a more narrow ticket. I think the problem with being against her in this race is she has such a tactical advantage. And even if she has regressed, she still the fastest horse in the field. right So I don't want to go crazy to try to beat her given um given she's the fastest horse in the in the field anyway, even with a regression. And as much as you know as much as Kenny McPeak said that he had backed off on her, and I often don't believe trainers when they say that, I mean, there's almost no evidence that that that they're concerned with her being ready. She worked right back after two weeks after that race. She has four works coming into this race.So, um, she's a very hard read at two to five. Um, you know, I wouldn't, I wouldn't, I wouldn't, I wouldn't better. Um, I wouldn't bet against her is a hard race as part of the sequence, but I'm for part of it. I'm going to want to try to beat her now.The problem in trying to beat her is who do we use? Who's actually fast enough to beat her? I'd have loved to bet idiomatic, right? I was even considering an all-in play in the BCBC on idiomatic, but she's out of the race. And so that leaves um very few horses that are fast enough to beat her even on her slowest day. So the two I'm going to use in the beat, torpedo, and a ticket are going to be Raging Sea, and um the Japanese horse awesome result. um Neither of them have the tactical speed. ah you know One of the big fears is Torpedo Ana could be loose on the lead. So I do worry that neither of them are tactical, but at least they're fast enough. i We don't have speed figures on awesome result. I did do some digging into races, especially the race in Kyoto. So um The GRA races you can get some pretty good information on, you can go look up those cards, you can get sectionals, you can get final times, and you can compare those across the card. And that race that Kyoto that she won on February 3rd was very fast. um You know, it would seem to be, on a total guess, a speed figure in the 90s, maybe even 100.The other races um and a lot of the dirt races in Japan are on the NAR circuit where you can't get data, good data, but she's won seven in a row. um ah She may be the real deal. And Raging Sea, while she has had real setups in her in her strong grade one efforts, um still has some back numbers that would you know would would make her competitive. So those would be the two horses I use to start out this. And then in continuing that theme and being against the Travers, I'm going to play against Fierceness in the classic.So I'm going to focus my play on Forever Young, who, you know, the one race we saw with Forever Young in the Derby was him closing from the back of the pack. But he's very tactical. And um and I think should get a great trip here. And I think is, you know, if you take sort of fierceness away and you don't believe the the Travers number, I think Forever Young is it has a huge shot here. I don't think he'll be six to one. But um but I think he'll be third choice at least behind Fierceness and City of Troy. And then I'm also going to use um nextI think that Next is going to be a very hard read. And I'm very hopeful that he gets his trip, meaning that that that they let the race come to him. He's shorting up in distances, so he's going to have to be further back. But I want them to let him have his trip. He's going to break from the 14 hole, which I think is optimal. they let They should let him ease into the race mid-pack and make his one devastating ah late run. and um And I think he's got a real shot, and I think it'll be a big price.Given I'm getting rid of Thorpedo Anna, I'm gonna throw some other longer prices in and I would recommend um if you play against her to not let yourself get beaten by any sort of long shot that you think has a chance. So I'm also gonna throw in Highland Falls, Arthur's Ride in Newgate as sort of backups on that ticket trying to beat Torpedo Anna. As we jump to the last the last two legs, the Breeders Cup sprint and the Breeders Cup dirt mile and the Breeders Cup sprint, I think there's going to be a lot of pace. I just don't see how with Skelly in the race. ah And I mean, he's basically has to go and is always gone. And I think it'll be interesting to watch the clock to see whether they run sub 44 to the half.MarshallUh, you know, my sort of gauge will be if they run 21 and three fifths to the quarter sub 44 around 44 to the half, I think the race could come apart. Um, so I'm going to use Nakatomi and, um, the,I think Mulliken probably can sit off the pace, and doesn't necessarily have to be on the lead. And then I think Nakatomi is that the best closer. On some of the backup tickets, I'm going to use as well a Remake.who's the Japanese closer and then use Gun Pilot because gun pilot has is a closer and has had two kind of hidden trips has been against the track in his last two races so I'm going to use those two on some of my backup tickets but really be with nakatomi and um and Mulliken as the two I use so in this race again I'm going against the the potential favorite in um ah in and brad in Brad Cox's versus Federal Judge. And then in the dirt mile,MarshallI'm going to use, ah I think, the two best horses in the race. I'm going to use Domestic Product and Skippylongstocking. And again, given I'm trying to, given I'm going to beat Thorpedo Anna, I'm also going to use a few tickets through Saudi Crown. He doesn't really, not really offer a price, but I think there's a chance that he's the speed of the speed. I do think this is another race that has quite a bit of speed, but Saudi Crown, it could be the best of the speed.MarshallI think there's a lot of grade three type horses in this race, and I'm going to sort of key on the on the stronger grade one horses. So that's going to be my ticket trying to beat Torpeda Anna. I'm not going to spend a lot of money on this ticket, maybe $75 max in terms of how I structure it. So I'm not going to put all my backups on the same ticket. ah just I just want the shot to make a real score if she can be beaten.MPNow, would you ah be the type that would play OK with repeating on OK, I'm against her like to maybe play some backups like, oh, I'm going to play this race to fall apart like it did a few years ago at this racetrack and say, OK, I'm going to take them all in that race and then use an all ticket with like your A type. So would that be a strategy that you'd be interested in or or not so much?MarshallI'm not as interested in using the all button, but I would sort of, I would tell people that um if you like a long shot, really consider using it because I think we're quick to throw out long shots because we think, ah we're quick to throw out long shots, but when you get a long shot to come in, it really is a big separator. So I have a hard time believing that something strange is going to happen in that race.Marshalland and and ah a huge bomb will come in. So I'm not going to do that necessarily there. But if I can beat torpedo Anna ah with one of those two horses, I want to allow my ah want to allow myself to spread, especially pick up some longer prices potentially in the classic. um And maybe you know i haven't if I find another long shot in the sprint or dirt mile, I would throw them in as well. But that's all contingent on beating Torpedo Ana. If I use Torpedo Ana, I'm going to be more narrow with my strongest opinions.MPI feel like the classic is the key to the sequence in a lot of ways because theyre they're the favorites here and have proven ah ah to have, I think, issues. I mean, you have Fierceness, who is is a very hit and miss type. His best day could certainly ah could certainly win this race. You have a city of Troy that's five to two morning line that's never really been on the dirt and has the question mark state to go along with him along with the Japanese horses i mean Forever Young looks good coming into the race and it's certainly gonna take a lot of steam but he certainly no slam dunk that this is that's another race that certainly could be a separator.MarshallYeah, there's no doubt. And that's, you know, if I organize a ticket around for forever young, because even if even in taking steam, he'll be third choice, or next to could be 12 to one, you know, let's say I mark my whole play through next, then then, um you know, then if I can get next in with another long shot, that's, you know, it's gonna pay really well, or I can press up a ticket using Forever Young and Next. And so, for example, even with, let's suppose I build a ticket with Thorpedo Anna in the race, because she's the most likely winner. So like if I bet Thorpedo Anna in the pick four, um then I would use her. And then in this race, if I use ah Forever Young and Next, well, I'm still ah moved i'm still gaining equity because I've beaten Fierceness, I've beaten City of Troy.MarshallAnd then I could play narrowly into ah the sprint, right? Using Nakatomi and using Mulliken. And I've beaten the the favorite in that race as well, federal judge, and then go on into the go on into the dirt mile.Marshalland use um and use Domestic Product and use Skippy Longstocking. I mean, that ticket is one by two by two um by two. I mean, that's say a.50 ticket, which you know I could play. you know I could you know I could imagine playing that. ah you know I can imagine playing that 20 times right or 50 times ah to try to try to make a nice score if I can make that happen and I think that would still pay okay because you're beating you're beating some favorites along the way what I probably won't do is I probably won't line up all the favorite and spread as well. I think that's the sort of death knell on these things. And there's a lot of betting opportunities in the Breeders' Cup. And so you know timpithly typically when I'm going to play a wager like this, I'm going to try to have a philosophy in my wager. And you know I'm not going to spend I'm not going to spend a ton of money on it as a percentage of my bankroll.If I like Next, for example, I don't want to be so tied up to him in the pick four that I potentially cost myself winning if he wins. right He's going to be 10 to 12 to one anyway, so I might as well have a fat win bet on that.MPWell, I like the strategies. I like the thoughts on these sequences. And you can apply a lot of these these principles to other sequences. It doesn't just have to be for this dirt pick four. I mean, what Marshall says is true for um basically any bet that you're trying to do. And there's so many to attack. So but you know think about those things whenever you are putting those tickets in. Well, Marshall, I know that obviously you're jumping into the BCBC ah What, that you know, and you're a big win better. Do you have an eye on somebody that may be, you know, your Breeders Cup betting challenge is going to hinge around?MarshallWell, not yet. I've not worked my way through it. I have a lot of contingency plans, right? If I have so little money left, this is what I'm going to do. um you know So a lot of it also depends on the board and what it tells me. But you know even in even in talking just through the sequence,Um, you know, I probably won't play the Distaff, but in the Classic, you know, I'm, I can imagine Forever Young and next being at the core of my plays. Right. If, if my bank rule is pretty strong, you know, maybe, maybe playing forever young, you're going to get four to one.MarshallMaybe on him, there's a lot that can be done with that. um Next is interesting to me because, you know again, depending on his price, I think there's a good shot he can hit the board. I think there's there's also you know he's his high variability. I think there's a chance next is last early and um en closes and finishes sixth. But he'll be a price. And you know if I'm more desperate, maybe I would i would use Next. Or maybe ah you know maybe if I have a nice number, I would use next to try to extend things.MarshallAnd um you know in the in the dirt mile, I think Skippy Longstocking is really interesting because he's in the 14 hole. And I think he will get somewhat overlooked being that far out. And um you know I think that on his good day, on his good day he can he can run a winning race. Now he's going to have to do a lot, but there's a you know why quite a good run up to that first term and turn. And if he can settle in, um you know maybe he can get a good trip. And I think he'll be all of that four to one, if not more.MPYeah, and that being the last race, I mean a lot of the contest is certainly gonna hinge on that one, Marshall. Hopefully, if you can pull off another BCBC, I think after coming on and doing this show, I'm gonna talk Pete into letting me do the the recap interview for the the free spot.MarshallI love it. That'd be that'd be great. It's ah um exciting, exciting days. I don't want to have, you know, it's funny when I think about the BCBC and I even think about betting the Breeders Cup overall, I will map out some plays, but you have to be very flexible, right? You have to be very flexible to see how the track is playing,have to be very flexible to see how the board is, right? I'm still, even in the Breeders' Cup betting challenge, looking for value, right? Looking for horses um that that I believe offer value relative to what I think they should go off at. So anyway, fingers crossed it should be a fun weekend. There's so many different ways to bet these races and doing a little bit of homework ahead of time, mapping out some tickets, um you know, make make can make this a lot of fun.MPWell, Marshall, this is an absolute blast. And 10-Strike Racing, obviously you hear Pete say all the time, was one of the founding partners of In the Money Media. So Clay, welcome to Plus.ClayI'm glad to be here, Mike. Happy to talk about the Breeders' Cup. It's my favorite time of the year.MPAbsolutely mine too and really it's this is like Christmas of every year I mean when we get to Breers Cup It seems like all everything leads up to it and then you have these two days and when it's over It's a it's a letdown for meClayAbsolutely.ClayOh, a hundred percent. I mean, I've already tried to figure out, I'm going to be driving back from Nashville on Sunday. I'm going to be playing the BCBC with a couple of people, you know, uh, from the pods and on my drive back, I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to be listening to because for the last two, or three weeks, it's all horse racing. And you know, the time after the breeders kept, there's this big lull, uh, you know, until the Derby trail kind of starts. And I don't think about handicapping for about a month. So, uh, it's, it's definitely, uh, we'll be some melancholy on Sunday.MPWell, it's final exam time here. And I asked you off air earlier today, I said, you know, I want to focus on pick fives and we're going to do pick five strategy. And I said, you know, what sequence would you want to look at here as far as for the pot? And you said that you liked the sequence for Saturday, starting in race number four, that finishes up in the classic. And I was I was curious to pick your brain because that sequence certainly has a couple of races that are going to have some big favorites. What led to you wanting to maybe focus on that sequence?ClayWell, several things. One is I think the classic is just an incredible puzzle to try to put together. And it's always my favorite race of the year. But the reason why, ultimately, I landed here is I think people, the great thing about horse racing is, or, you know, handicapping and horse racing is game selection. And when you're playing poker, you got to, and you got to play in every hand.But in horse racing, we have this massive menu. I mean, Breeders Kept Weekend. I mean, how many pick fives are there? I mean, there's a million of them pick fours. So it's you don't have to play them all. So I always tell people it's in a pick five, you have two options. You either have a single that you love in the first leg or you hate the top four or five horses in the race and you're going to play some long shots. If not, then why are you playing that pick five? Go to the pick four. Don't dilute your opinion by spreading four and five wide in the first leg. I mean, I hate when I see my friends or you know ah players and they've gone four deep and they're using the first four choices in a pick in a pick five. That is you're erasing any value. It's a negative EV and it's just bad game selection. So the reason why I selected this pick five is I think Ways and Means is a real standout in this race. So I want to say she's going to be the favorite. I don't care. I'm going to single her. Let some people go two and three wide, you know, dilute themselves. But I'm just going to just strike here with her. I think she's the best horse. She's an improving three year old and I think she's a standout. So I'm going to just single here and go on. And if I get deep, I'll go on to a different sequence.MPNow, you like the first leg, and you know I do agree with you, first leg, so like like with when it comes to pick fives especially, or any really multi-leg sequence, it seems when that when I first leg ah lends itself to a price, that that pick four, pick five always pays a lot more because people really, I think, focus on the favorites in those first initial legs, and a lot of money always flows through those those early favorites, so and butClayYep.MPAnd this In this case, if you like one and you continue to have that equity in that first, you know, by slimming down, like you said, by not using a bunch of horses, then that could be powerful as well.ClayIt is. So I think you're going to have to beat some favorites in in a sequence. And especially this one, you mentioned that there's ah three big favorites. Obviously, you want to play against ah at minimum one of Ways and Means. In the next leg, you have Cogburn and then you have torpedo Anna. What I'm going to do is I'm not going to use Cogburn in the next leg. That's where I'm going to make my stand and create my value is I think he's really talented horse and I think he's the most likely to win that race. But I think there are several horses in there that can beat him. It's a wide open. And if I can beat him, I've created a ton of equity. I think he's going to be even money. And I think there's many More than one way he can get beat in this race And I'm just gonna make him show it and if I can beat him and I get through this leg I think I've built up a quite a bit of equity um And you know, there's a big favor the next but I think the classic and the turf are wide open and I can Really turn this into a pretty solid pair if I can beat CogburnMPAbsolutely. I do think that Cogburn is probably going to be one of the, well, him and Torpedo Anna, both in this sequence will be probably the two biggest favorites of the weekend. So beating one of those two make the the the payout big.Beating both of those two could turn it to a nuclear type payout. And the fact that you like a horse in the first leg, now I can see more like why you would want to attack the sequence. So attacking Cogburn, are you looking for a big spread?Do you like a couple long shots? What's your strategy there?ClayYeah, I am gonna spread. I'm using the one, the two, the six, eight, and eight, and maybe nine, hold on. No, I think nine's called the end of 12. So I'm not confident in like one or two horses, but I think I can get through with those horses.Yeah, I think I can get through with one of those one, two, three, four, five horses and feel pretty confident. If Cochrane gets beat, it'll be one of those five.MPYeah, I like your idea here as far as, you know, maybe taking on Cogburn. There was one horse that I would mention that that you don't have, and that would be the 10, the South African horse, the Isivunguvungu. I think that that one might be a one you that you might want to add, especially, I will tell you, I do have some inside baseball here because I do a lot of time with Will Humphrey, and he is the exercise rider for this horse, for Graham Motion Stable, and he said that this horse could not be doing any better.ClayYeah, that's fair.Well, that's good to know. I did bet him last time when he was first at Colonial. I think he was like eight or 10 to one morning line, but we had some scratches. I thought he was impressive, but talk about a major step up going from a listed stake at Colonial to the big boys at ah in the Breeders' Cup. But, you know, at 20 to one, you know, why not use him?MPAbsolutely true. And I'm not, you know, while it is a step up, uh, the horse that won this race last year, no balls actually came out of that race at Colonial to win.ClayThat's fair.MPSo, uh, while we talked about the sprint now, we got to go straight to the Distaff and, and, in race number six there.MPAnd here, here we are with Thorpedo Ana for or against this one?ClaySo if Idiomatic didn't scratch, I was this I would have singled Idiomatic here. I really wanted to play against Torpedo Anna here. the problem i mean There's many reasons why people can't oppose her here, and I wouldn't hate somebody for doing it. The problem is I wouldn't necessarily know outside of potentially the Japanese horse how to do it. So I would probably tell people if you're dead against Torpedo Anna, and I give you a couple of reasons why, I'd probably have to go all to beat her and that's not a crazy if you got thinner in the race before or say you wanted to use a single Cogburn I would use all against Thorpedo Anna here I mean she's had a long so campaign Kenny's never one in the Breeders Cup he a lot of times runs them one more time ah than they need and I think that 111 on the page was a fraudulent number so I don't think she's that much of a standout against these howeverI just think she's going to have a tactical advantage and it's probably just classier than these. I'm going to just go Thorpedo Anna in the Japanese horse, which we don't really know much about. She's undefeated. She's a Justify. That's enough reason, but I'll probably just go two nine and hope if I got, uh, I mean, obviously prefer the Japanese horse to win, but, um, I'm going to go too deep there.MPYeah, I like your idea that that if you're going to oppose her that that you want to cast a wide net because it could be chaotic. I mean, the the last is staff ah ah at Del Mar it turned into chaos and and you look, you had a huge long shot win that race.ClayYeah.MPAnd I do understand the thought of opposing her here in the sense that, you know, Gun Song didn't come back to race very well last weekend.ClayRight.mPYou know, that maybe the Fierceness of the race did take a little bit out of her.ClayShe was.MPNow, she was fantastic in that race. I mean, this, you know, and she's been a monster all year long, but she is, you know, a three year old. And like you said, it's, it's the end of the year and there could be other speed in here.I think that the four is apparently a horse that loves to go wickedly fast early. So that's, that's a horse that could turn and put the race on its head. And then beyond that, I mean, who do you really use?I would find, but unless you like the, Awesome Result, the rest of them look the same and really anything can happen.ClayYeah. Now I agree. That's why, you know, and in a scenario like this, if you have it really short, this feeling is going to be one to two. If you oppose her, you don't want to get cute and use one horse opposing, you know, one or two horses. And you really are just saying, Hey, I'm i'm against her and it's chaos and play them all.MPYeah, and with your single win in leg one, that affords you some of that luxury, especially if you're going to play, you know, ah you might you probably have some strategies where you have maybe some some tickets where you have a higher multiple, but then if you take a shot for a smaller multiple, taking all in this race, and if she wins, okay, like, you know, you took a shot, I get that, and I really don't mind that way to look at it.ClayYep. Yeah. yeahMPWell, let's look at the last two real quick. ah Race 7, like you said earlier, wide open Breeders, Cup, Turf. You have ah the mare in here, Emily Upjohn, that probably is going to take some money. ah Beyond that, that you know your typical cast of Europeans, who'd you end up with liking in here?ClaySo I spread here. I mean, and this is just the weakest group of Breeders Cup Turf horses I have ever seen since I've been playing. that No one jumps out. I mean, I guess Rebels Romance is going to be the favorite. I mean, I don't know. He went to Germany last time. I mean, those aren't good horses. um I just don't love anybody in here. I'm going to go mainly Euros because I mean, that's who wins this race. I can't, when was the last time an American won this race? It's been quite a while. Um, I'm going to go two, three, four, five, six, 11. So that is Emily UpJohn, the Japanese Shara, Luxumborg, Farbridge.and Rebels romance. And I honestly, I couldn't, you know, decipher between, you know, A's and B's honestly here. And, you know, I don't think ah Farbridge is that great, but I don't think he's without a shot for the American side. um So that's kind of where I'm standing here.MPYeah, really wide open race. And I do think difficult to separate some of the Europeans. And a lot of it's going to come down the trip. I mean, ah if you you look at the horse like the three last year, he very well could have won the race had he gotten ah the right ride.ClayYeah.MPHe was 25 to 1 in there.ClayThat's right.MPI mean And I think that this year, it's the same kind of thing.ClayRight.MPWhoever gets the best trip, the best ride, especially between the Japanese and the Europeans, that certainly seems logical to spread out in that race. Well, let's go to the Classic. you know and Do you have a strong opinion here to kind of pull it all together?ClayWell. I mean, I like Forever Young quite a bit, but I'm going to try to hit a home run by spreading some here and using some bombs. I might weight them a little differently, but generically, I'm going to use Forever Young, City of Troy.ClayI mean it, I'm going to use it because I don't want to get beat by that horse. and If I've already beat Cogburn and maybe I've hit um you know the Japanese horse instead of the Thorpedo Anna, I do not want to lose to the city of Troy. I'm not crazy about European turf horses on the dirt, but I do not want to get beat by that one. I'm also going to use Fierceness, Sierra Leone, Newgate, and Next. So I have some, you know, shots there that if this thing comes undone, if Next, Newgate, and even Sierra Leone, those are gonna be prices. And if I'm, if I've beaten Cogburn, I'm gonna be alive for decent prices on a ticket that's not that crazy expensive.MPYeah, it looks like you have the right ones there. Against Fierceness then, not using it all?ClayNo, I did use, sorry, and I am using Fierceness.MPOkay, okay, I missed that, okay.ClayI'm probably more middle of the road on him. You know, I've lost so much money on this horse. it's I know he I should be able to take him to court, but um the Derby was just a train wreck, but he's obviously talented. and I do think that Travers number was a little fraudulent, and like I mentioned for Thorpedo. So I don't think he's quite the standout on figs that he looks. He might trip out, but I think he's gonna have more work to do here. He's gonna have to, he's gonna have ah the speed horse crossed over on him, Arthur's ride.ClayHe's gonna have to scramble up more than he has in the past, but I don't want to get beat by him.MPYeah, this could be a wild race. I did hear an interesting stat as far as Aiden O'Brien on the dirt. I think he's two for 56 lifetime on the dirt. And his two wins were Johannesburg was one and Mendelssohn was the other. So both, you know, and and and Breeders Cup races. But the fact that they're coming And if this force wins this race, uh, you know, you probably, it would be a blank check as far as the stud fee goes. And that's why they're here. I'm, I'm at the position, uh, for me that if you like, I think maybe a single, like you, you, you take that, that, uh,ClayYep.MPand try to shrink down and get the equity that way. If you don't, then I would just toss them completely out.ClayYep.MPAnd so that's how I would maybe look at it. But the horse, like what your your strategy with using you know some of these other ones, especially, you know you're you're doing different scenarios.like like Sierra Leone, that one's gonna have to, you know, have a meltdown probably. Arthur's Ride could gallop along on the front. Newgate's sort of an interesting long shot. You know, next is the worst that, you know, we don't really know how good that he is.So I like that that you have all those different scenarios, and if you get a lot, especially with a couple of those favorites beat, I mean, you're gonna have it wrapped.ClayYep.MPI mean, you know, a really good chance to catch a nice ticket.ClayYeah, I really don't see a scenario where this ticket, if it's alive, gets beat. um you know I just don't see a Highland Falls and Mixto, Senor Buscador. I mean, the two Japanese horses. I just don't see them winning. So I feel pretty good about that. um And to your point on ah City of Troy,you know, Aiden O'Brien has got a miserable record on the dirt because he's bringing grass horses. But he's been, I think, declaration of war. And ah um who did Tiznow beat?ClayI forget the name of it.MPGiants CauseswayClayYeah, Giants Causeway. So it's not like he hasn't been close and in the picture.MPRight.ClayAnd I would probably argue the horses that beat those were quite a bit better than the horses we have facing him in this race. So the the art the problem is, especially in the wind pool and probably in the shorter exotics, he's going to be too short for what I think are his chances of winning. I'm opposed to him in the wind pool. But you know I think I still could collect the $3,000 or $4,000 Pick 5 in a lot of these scenarios to him if I beat some of these other horses. So I still want to have that on a ticket that's you know only $180 for $0.50.MPWell, I really appreciate you doing this. I do think that this ah gave a nice look at at how you you know attack this particular sequence, but ah you know pick five in general, your typical strategy for doing things and and you know yeah you're singling and gaining equities in certain places.you're You're trying to play out different scenarios and other races. And we're going to focus on wagering strategies because there are so many different bets that you can play during the Breeders' Cup. there There's all turf pick threes, pick fours, and tons of pick fives that you can get involved with. Pick six is everything. So we're going to maybe look at a few separate sequences, talk to some of ah our experts. And the first one of these pods, I'm going to bring in a guy that played in the BCBC last year, um definitely has a fantastic turf opinion. So I wanted to get Michael Donable here to get his opinion for Friday and the turf pick three. Michael, welcome back to Plus.Michael DomabylYeah, thanks for having me. I think I've also got some experience covering $3 minimum all pick all turf pick threes. I have that put up plenty of plenty of blog blogs on the end of money so in the money media site about the Keeneland turf pick three. So we'll try to parlay that knowledge to to the Breeders Cup sequence.MPYeah, and that's why you're the perfect person for this show. and The $3 minimum pick three, a little bit of a different animal. I love that. ah the the yeah The heavier minimum, I mean, regular pick threes in the Breeders Cup are 50 cents, if I'm not mistaken. So that $3 minimum pick three definitely makes, you know, ups that ante. I mean, you're looking at a six time higher minimum than you would on those 50 cent pick threes. And the strategy has to be completely different.Michael DomabylYeah, I think it forces good habits is what I like to say with this type of sequence because a lot of times you're tempted when it's a 50 cent minimum to include include any horse that you think has a chance but those combinations get quick, it get expensive really quick when you're talking $3 a pop. So it really allow ah focus um makes you focus in on what is your actual opinion in these races and then bet it accordingly.MPWell, Friday is especially difficult because we have the all turf pick three, it's races six, eight, and 10. Now these are these are two year olds and you have the juvenile turf sprint, you have the juvenile Phillies turf, and then you have the juvenile, ah the boys turf races, all big full fields, all extremely difficult races. ah Michael, what's more your approach? Are you more like ah a caveman ticket guy? Are you a guy that's gonna play several different tickets?
Michael Domabyli For this bet in particular, I'll play a few different tickets. um What I'll try to focus in on is making sure that my opinion is my opinion has to be rock solid in two of the three legs for me to hit it. so third leg If that happens in the third leg, i'll leave myself a little bit of a buffer.Michael DomabylSo there's two kind of principles i want I want to apply to this bet. That's the first one is I got to be right at least two out of three times. And then the second principle is I want to wait, even though there's a $3 minimum, I still want to wait my combinations differently depending on the strength of my opinion and then also the prices of the horses I'm including. So we'll talk about it in a little bit. but you know, the second leg of the sequence has a super heavy favorite in the number one Lake Victoria, who you kind of have to decide whether you're with or against. And for me, I'm, I'm with her. um So I'll be having to play combinations that include her for higher denominations than I do the other the other horses that I'm using more as backups in that race.MPYeah, definitely that's going to be the biggest, I would say probably one of the bigger favorites, especially on this first day of the Breeders' Cup this year. Now, when you talk about these $3 minimum pick threes, and you mentioned you have to be right twice, but it's just hypothetically, if this were a horse you were really strongly against, that you would definitely want to oppose, would that make you want to play this bet more? Maybe attack it, put a little bit more of your bankroll into it?Michael DomabylYeah, I think if your opinion is that you ah are completely against Lake Victoria and you be have the ability to toss her and then include a few others, then you might want to, ah you know, reserve a little bit more of your bankroll towards hitting this bet because if you're right on that opinion, then this thing's going to pay.Michael Domabylah Probably four figures plus if if she doesn't win just because of how competitive the other the other fields are But like I said, you got to go with what your opinion is in these sequences for the most part And for her, I just think she's on par or maybe even a little bit better than meditate who came and destroyed ah The best we had to offer in the Juvenile Fillies turf two years ago um and that she drew pretty well ah Like Victoria drew pretty well in the one hole was as well. So she'll be tough to beat so I'll have to work around work around her a bit and and use the other creative opinions I have in the other two legs.MPWell, we'll get into the sequence a little bit here and we wanted these shows to be a little more, uh, you know, wagering strategies, you know, how we're going to attack these bets. But, you know, we have to talk about the races a little bit so that the races are six, eight, and 10 here on Friday. Again, two year olds, we start in juvenile turf sprint and Michael, I thought that, uh, This race was a little spready for me. I didn't I didn't really have a huge opinion. And, you know, they're going five furlongs, two-year-olds on the turf at Delmar. A lot of Europeans in this race, extremely difficult, I think, to narrow down.Michael DomabylYeah, i think it I think it can be, but for the purposes of this wager, especially with a heavy favorite coming up in the second leg of it, I wanted to kind of use the potential that a lot of people will be spreading in my favor. and I'm going to really focus in on two potential scenarios that could happen here, and I want and i think I'll have the winner if either of those scenarios occur.Michael DomabylThe first one is if but the number eight Ecoro Seig is actually as good as advertised and he breaks away from there and can and can go wire to wire. I think he's the better of the speed and I think his presence in the race is really going to cause Governor Sam to be up against it, who's the other speed. But I do think that there's a potential that a few of these go at it on the front end and so I want what I think is who I think is the best closer or at least the closer that offers the best value and that's the number nine shareholder so i'll just be using those two primarily in this in this pick three sequence and if one of those two don't win then I'm probably going to be down to only a couple combinations maximum on some backup lines. um But what I really like about the number nine shareholder is he reminds me a lot of Fierceness last year where he threw in a clunker the race before the Breeders Cup and thenMichael DomabylBut if you cover that one up, then he's right there with the rest of them. He won on firm ground at Ascot. So um those two are going to be the two for me to kick kick it off. And and as we move, try to move on to the sequence and and narrow it in when when other people are spreading.MPYeah, I'm curious what this pace is in this race, especially when you have Paco on Governor Sam, because I just, you know, he's going to go. And that's, you know, this, this horse is is a one way, you know, go to the front. I mean, he's one force straight. But I do think that this pace, especially if this Japanese horse is as advertised could end up being nuclear. So for me, I would probably be you know looking for you know play a couple different scenarios but if you do play that scenario that the race could melt down I do agree that your number nine could be interesting but i think others could be interesting too I mean there's a lot of euros that i think are interesting such as the two uh the seven is interesting here you get ah ryan more afraid no brian so you know that that's the a team I probably would have to use that oneah The 12th, Ides of March, I think is another one. Hey, no, Brian, you know, you're looking at horses that maybe could be sitting kind of in that second flight behind those speed ones. That one could be another one that could use. So I would be a little more spready here. And I'd be looking for a meltdown because like you said, ah if this, if the Japanese horses as advertised and you have Paco in the race, that makes ah this that scenario quite possible.Michael DomabylYeah, i think i mean I think if you're gonna use a few, then you're gonna really need to be narrow in the next two races, ah depending on your opinion on Lake Victoria.MPWell, we're going to jump to that Lake Victoria race. And we've gone over it a little bit. But you you I asked you off air, are you for or against? You said you think that she wins. So that's certainly you know it is going to bring most of your money. Would you say 90% of your money runs through that one?Michael DomabylYeah, I would say about 90%. And so I'll use a couple horses as backups in case I get through the first leg with either my eight or a nine. But I would just be using these horses at the $3 mark, whereas I'm going to be using Lake Victoria with where shareholder and And a coral siege in the previous leg probably at the $10 denomination um and so the horses I would use as backups is the number four sit the in the number six Virgin Colada and then the number 13.MPI like that, that's nice.Michael DomabylUh vixen, I just think those are kind of those horses are all going to be bigger prices I think the way to play this race is if you're with Lake Victoria is to be against Kind of the horses that are going to be in the middle of the market just because you're not going to get the value on your opinion uh by just picking the second and third most likely winners I think those horses are interesting just coming from new york um yeah you know yeah you can go you can do worse than having chad brown and Flavian Prat on your side um and then vixen I was very interested in back in the in the natalmaMichael DomabylUm, I thought she couldn't lose that day. but She ended up getting beaten by her stablemate. Uh, but I just want to have a little piece of a ticket with her in involved in it. Uh, just in case my thoughts about her going into the last race actually come to fruition here.MPYeah, this is a very interesting race. I like a couple others. And like you said about that the middle of the market, I like some of update the upper end to on the 11 fiery Lucy, that's just a trip note on that one. So if you go to the in the money plus website and check out some of the trip notes, check out the trip note on fiery Lucy, because she definitely You know, I think something that you could maybe deem a positive moving forward. That one's 30 to one morning line. The 12 Mayday Ready is a horse I've been on all year. I had her when she wanted Saratoga first time out. And then I had her in those back-to-back races. Another one that had difficulty in the last race. Another, you know, very difficult trip that she overcame. So I think that, you know, she's 20 to one morning line. Another one could be interesting. I could see her 13. I think that one could be a use. And then maybe a little 8, you know,MPThere's another Aiden O'Brien, Heaven's Gate, another one that raced pretty well last time, and she certainly has heavily raced. Seven starts coming in here. of The fact that Aiden shows up with her, you know, you would think that maybe that she has had enough, but she's here. So that'd be another one I might use if you're trying to look for alternatives to the favorite. We'll go to Race 10 here to finish up, and it's BC Juvenile turf. Now, ah since you're so, I think, slim early, are you spreading here?Michael DomabylYeah, I think ah I still have to have an opinion here that I'm that considering one of my three opinions. So the first my first opinion would be either the eight or the nine in the first leg, and then you have a couple of backups. Then the second opinion is Lake Victoria in the second leg, and then you have a couple backups. My third opinion is I'm not conceding this race to New Century and Alcudra. I think that the summer that Both of them got a big pace set up to come into in that race. And I think that's kind of inflating the the commercial figures to some extent. And so my opinion is really to take kind of some other logical horses outside of the summer stakes and make them kind of the A's as this part of the part of this ticket. The first one is the number five, Zulu Kingdom. He just reminds me a lot of Chad's winner of the juvenile Phillies turf last year, hard to justify where.Michael DomabylHe's coming in with um with, ah you know, not the flashiest speed figures, but just u ultra game and in victory. um And, you know, the fact that Chad, you know, has lots of two year olds in his barn and this is the one that's showing up here. I think that's noteworthy. And then the other ah piece is going to be I like I like the horses coming out of the national stakes at the Cura on a September 15th, and that's going to be the number seven seagulls 11 the number 12 Almori City and the number 13 Henry Matisse and it's not necessarily because I liked that race necessarily but I just feel like that those are the class of the field coming over from Europe um I like for the top pick Amori City with ah with Buick stick choosingChoosing him over Al-Qudra to some extent um and then I just think that if you if a lot of the narrative around this race is a matchup between New Century and Al-Qudra and if I think you can get around those and use the other logicals that can add enough equity to the sequence to get you paid.MPYeah, I agree. I think you say, you know, you're on the favorite there in the middle leg. A lot of people and a lot of buzz are going to run and a lot of tickets are going to run through those horses coming out of the summer. So you sort of, like you said, you have to kind of, you know, find ways to zig and zag around the public if you do want to get paid. And I do agree with you. I do think that this race is, is one of those ones where you're either for or against those horses. And if you're against.MPYou're certainly, I do think, ah have a chance to cash a big ticket. One horse that I'll just bring up here, especially since you like Zulu Kingdom as the 14th tenacious leader, this horse is going to be a huge price and was just a neck away from that one at Saratoga with anticipation. So much so that they tried the dirt. They tried to breed his futurity with this one. I actually didn't mind the story that horse in that race. They tried, didn't race very well. They're back to the grass here. They don't go away. They do show up in here. So this one is going to get ignored. You get IRAD. You have speed. You talked about you know, Chad's winner last year. Well, this horse could get a similar trip from an outside post, especially close to the front. I wouldn't sell this one short. That would be one that I would be interested in and and certainly would have plenty of combos through in this all turf pick three. Well, Michael, I do feel like this was very beneficial, this analysis of not only the sequence, but your strategies for these these upper level, ah higher minimum multi-race bets.Michael DomabylYeah, I think, uh, just kind of coming up with some principles to follow help helps me organize the bets in my head and, you know, just making sure every dollar you're spending here is going towards your opinion. Um, and whether that's necessarily matter in my case, sometimes that's knowing my limitations and knowing that I might not knock it out of the park and all three opinions, but if I can get two of my three opinions home and then I'll leave myself some room for error in the third leg.MPWell, Mike, thanks for doing this. If you know me, you know that as much as I love the sport's established traditions and big events, I'm also always on the lookout for new, cool, creative ways to promote racing as well.
Enter our latest partner, the National Thoroughbred League. The brainchild of Robert and Randall, whom you'll "meet" in the attached video, the idea is to create a team-based competition for horse racing. Think Formula One meets the Kentucky Derby and you'll have an idea of where they are coming from.
The teams are associated with ten different major sporting cities and each competition plays out over the course of one day across five races. Ten teams will compete with horses they have drafted that will earn points based on finishing positions. At the end of the card, the team with the highest points totals will win that day's Cup. At the end of the year, the team with the most points wins the championship.
One of the smartest aspects of the league is its appeal to celebrities and partiers alike, two elements I believe are crucial to creating new fans. Yes, of course, I know gambling is at the center of the sport -- but how are we going to create new gamblers -- potential annuities to the sport -- if we don't first create fans?

We wanted to make sure you’re aware of two shows from this week.

The surest sign of spring, in non-pandemic years, of course, is the convergence of opening day at Keeneland and the start of the Major League Baseball season.
I should be in the paddock before the late pick 5 kicks off in Lexington so I’m juiced for the stakes-laden weekend ahead. There’s no shortage of wagering options this weekend - with 16 graded stakes on Saturday alone - and as always, we’ve covered a ton of ground across the ITM network this week.
We're also going to do something a little different, embedding a little bonus baseball content -- extra innings if you will. Earlier this week I recorded an Opening Day special and I've since appended this same bit of audio to it. If you want to go back and listen via your favorite podcast app, this will appear after the credits/outro song (you’ll have to redownload). But you can also listen here. Here's the story.
The internet can be so gross. But it can also be magical. I think it's important to celebrate those latter instances. The other day I was searching for the audio of Van Lingle Mungo -- a song my Dad would play every baseball Opening Day -- and I came upon this fantastic reimagining of the tune with players of much more recent vintage being namechecked. I dropped a note in the Youtube comments and later that day I was chatting with the artist, Daniel Butterfield. I couldn't resist having him on the show.
