GEB Johnson Podcast: Blogging Without Writing

Episode #20

Notes:

You may be looking for the perfect side business!

Today’s topic will cover both articles:

3 Ultimate Ways to Blog without Writing

3 Ways to Start A Popular Blog without Any Writing Skills

A blog is often key to a business’ online presence

This is something that often intimidates people, but it doesn’t have to!

There are a lot of people who have blogs that are not writers

What happens if you have an awesome business idea but no writing skills?

  • Dictation software: turns your speech into text

Gmail>Google Drive>Click on new Google Docs>Tools>Voice typing>

Click on the microphone > Start talking

You will want to speak slower when utilizing this tool.

Makes it easy to send it straight to someone who can edit it

  • Hire a writer

Need to have a topic or outline

Can still use voice typing

How do I start a blog?

  • You need a niche: Who is your target? What is your blog about? Why are doing this?
  • You need a platform: Where will you share your content?

Alternative 1: Podcast

Have someone create show notes for the blog post and add them to the blog

Alternative 2: Vlog

Repurpose your content by turning your video into a podcast and a blog

Alternative 3: Hire a Transcriptionist

Verbatim-includes laughing, music, ums, everything

Editing Transcription-any extra noise is omitted

Intelligent Transcribe-focuses on the content relevant to the topic

GEB Johnson Podcast: Working Remotely

Episode #19

Joel Quass shares a little bit about his background.

  • He was a manager with Costco for 27 years.
  • Author of Good Management is Not
  • He’s an expert in interviewing skills.
  • Got his 1st job at age 10 delivering newspapers
  • He always had a side hustle
  • He realized that all his experience with so many jobs has made him an expert in interviewing
  • His goal is to help people land the job they would like to have and probably deserve.
  • He took a course through the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches.
  • He also took a course in being a Global Career Faciliator to help clients more one on one.

Joel shares one of the biggest mistakes people make in interviewing.

  • It’s not about you! It’s about the company and the position they need to fill.

Joel talks about when you should hire a career coach.

  • You’re not making progress in the job hunt.
  • You’re not getting any responses to your resumes.
  • You’re making a career field shift.
  • You’re not confident with your interviewing skills.

Joel explains what mindset shifts you need to make when making a career shift. 8:50

  • Identify how you will manage the fear and negative emotions involved
  • Define your goal and make a plan.
  • Schedule in your time to work on your job hunt.

Joel reflects how we end up so far from our “dream jobs”.

  • There’s just not enough emphasis and guidance on how to find a job for young people.

Joel shares about the difference between then and now in work-life balance.

  • People know how to advocate for themselves better.
  • People work much more than one job for their whole career.

Joel shares the steps he takes with his clients.

  • Recognize where you are.
  • Identify where you feel challenged and where you feel comfortable.
  • Identify the resources and availability you have.
  • Identify the positions that you are best suited for.

Pro Tip for your resume: Focus on how you did your job rather than what you did.

The Beginning of Business

  • Determine your target audience with research
  • A business evolves from a website, a blog, a vlog or a podcast

Business Mediums

  • Blog

-offers content and value in the form of written articles

  • Vlog

-Offers content and value in a video format (FB lives, YouTube, SnapChat, etc)

  • Podcast

-Offers content, and value in an audio format for people to listen to.

-Include a wide range of topics

You can have one or a combination!

Types of Services

  • Product Based

-Can be physical or digital items that you sell

-Physical products include clothing, car parts, jams, energy packs, etc.

-Digital products include courses, books, checklists, etc

(Such as Genola’s Modern Career Search Course)

  • Service Based

-(Examples: accounting, coaching, virtual assisting)

You could also have a combination of products and services to offer!

Traditional Way to Sell a Product

  • Customers log on to a website, purchase, and the owner sends them the product.

Another Means: Drop Shipping:

  • You list someone else’s product on your website and they fulfill the order
  • Allows you to sell a product without having to store the product

You can offer both products and services on a website.

There are many things you can automate in selling a product or a service, but it still requires your oversight and involvement.

Questions to Consider:

What type of business model fits your personality and your business goals?

What Can You Find on LinkedIn:

  • Profiles
  • Photos
  • Resumes (including experience and trainings)
  • Articles
  • Videos
  • Information about other industries

Your profile communicates a lot!

  • An incomplete profile shows you may not be serious about your job search
  • It can show you are an expert in your field
  • It can show what you are interested in pursuing

LinkedIn is a search engine

  • Consider SEO when you are creating a profile
  • A better opportunity may even find you

You can update it without notifying all your connections (ie: your current boss)

If you don’t have the time or understanding of how to update your profile, Genola can help you optimize your profile to find the best job opportunities! www.gebjohnson.com/careersupportservices

GEB Johnson Podcast: Working Remotely

Episode

In this episode, I out line the four basic types of work from home jobs so you can determine which opportunity would best suit your lifestyle.

There are 4 Types of Remote Jobs

Remote Work Opportunity #1

  • Requires a soundproof workspace
  • Requires you to sign in and out a specific time

Remote Work Opportunity #2

  • Does not have workspace sound restrictions
  • Allows you to choose when you work
  • Allows a lot more flexibility for balancing working and home

Remote Work Opportunity #3: Working With A Team

  • Work is not bound by deadlines, not location or time of day
  • Freelancers fall into this category

Remote Work Opportunity #4: Home and Onsite

  • Also allows for a lot of time/location freedom
  • Consultants and Trainers fall in this category

*None of these opportunities are for those who need lots of structure and accountability

Questions to Consider:

What is more important? The kind of work you do? Or the flexibility?

Twitter Quote: “So when you say you want to work remotely, you have to decide: what specifically are you looking for? Because if you are in a situation where you are very restricted but you are at home, you know, you have to think about that kind of thing.-Genola Johnson GEBPodcast, Episode”
