Meet Claire and Ed: trustees of the wonderful charity “Olive Branch” from Chippenham. Meet Andy Owen, a big part of Chippenham’s punk rock scene, promoting a very unique event in this knack of the woods - ‘NAM FEST ! On the 31st of August at the Consti Club. Bringing together punk bands from far and wide, it promises to be an awesome evening for punk rockers and music lovers alike. Ed visits the wonderful and fruitful allotment that belongs to “The Shed” in Chippenham. Formerly “The Men’s Shed”, they now invite female members as well and are a lovely bunch that offers gardening and wood-working among their other activities, all in good company. Highlights from some of the Kandu Arts acts at the Minety Festival so far. A wide range of musical genres and talents, thanks to everyone that performed and took part. A big shout out to the directors and all the crew and the volunteers that make this wonderful community festival happen. A special shout out to Oz Cahill and all his wonderful crew from Weston College who run the Kandu Arts stage. Their tireless efforts make for a wonderful experience for all.

Introducing a very special guest: the very lovely and talented Richard Farr! A musician and counsellor, Richard will be joining Kandu Arts at several summer celebrations with his band Hello Earth and as an MC. You will have the pleasure of seeing them perform live at: 1) the warm up gig for Minety Festival on the 4th July (election day), at the Methodist Church in Chippenham! (Also on the line-up: the incredible NoFlipe all the way from Paris, France! Old Hounsell, Rich Hazel and more acts to follow); 2) At the Minety Festival literally the day after! Save the date for the PRIDAY Friday celebrating all things pride in the Kandu tent on the 5th July! Richard will be MCing and headlining with his band Hello Earth. And last but not least: 3) The annual Kandu Arts Unlock Reset Festival on the bank holiday in August (17th&18th) at the lovely Pitch and Putt in Monkton Park.
In this podcast, Ed and Richard reminisce about amongst other things: the legendary early days of Golddiggers in Chippenham including the time when Ed supported Nico and also when Richard supported Nico, Richard’s previous musical projects, the story of how his newest band came about, him singing in front of Damon Albarn in the village in which he grew up in a local pub and how he felt about it, and more. Maddie Storvold, the very talented, inspiring, funny and lovely singer-songwriter coming all the way from Canada, who we had the pleasure of seeing perform live at the Red Lion in Lacock last week, chats to Ed about her life, musical influences and much more in this 50minutes long podcast, but well worth your time. A Valentine’s Day you’ll never forget
Kandu Arts is bringing a show to Chippenham that promises a whirlwind romance of stories, chat and laughs about love. Love Stories, by Mark Rutterford, promises a Valentine’s Day event like no other and one you’ll never forget. As the audience eats Love Heart sweets, they will hear tales of love affairs and heartache but like any romantic encounter, Love Stories is not a passive experience.
Chippenham Uniform Exchange - what a fantastic organisation on so many levels, we are so lucky to have in our town. Not only do they offer everything your child might need for school (watch this episode to see just how vast their offer is!) at a bargain price, they also repair and prepare the pre-loved items to a great condition, and hold a high standard in their service. Of course, all the while contributing to reducing the environmental impact of the clothing industry. She is a member of both groups, and they have been Kandu supporters for years, Sahara Sisters bellydancing group performing at the Kandu Stage on last year’s Minety Festival, and they will also be joining us on the 21st December at the Kandu Kristmas Kracker annual party at the King Alfred Hall (do join us!). The Knatty Knitters set up a lovely Christmas tree this year at our S.H.O.P. and are also running the “Name the Fairy” contest - which you can do for 50p and have a chance to win it at our S.H.O.P.! Meet Adam Jeffcoat - a local artist now exhibiting and selling his art in our S.H.O.P., who is also an Emmy award winning animator! His art already proved to be very popular with 3 sales on his first day of setting up. Ed checks in from Stari Grad, Croatia! Chatting to the former head-teacher and current teacher that both came on a cultural exchange to England 2 months earlier, with 4 students, and are now meeting us yet again in their school, this time for a lovely Kandu music workshop. Have a look at the expertly led music workshop we had such a nice time at, and had an opportunity to cultural expand our minds and vocabulary, learning a French, Bulgarian and Croatian song. Thanks to Karla and Vincent for coming all the way from Paris, France to help make this happen. We look forward to our future collaboration with a school, as so far it’s been a great success.
Ed is calling in once again from the Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells, this time introducing to us the wonderful person that is Jason Lower. Jason is the Director of Creative Engagement at Trinity Theatre, and he helps many people from all cross sections of society realise their creative potential. Meet Camilla West, a very talented jewellery designer and maker, who is a member of the ‘Artspring’ artist collective based in Tonbridge (*which is different from Tunbridge Wells). On this occasion, they branch out into Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells for a wonderful exhibition (that you can see from 11-21 October, Monday to Saturday 10-3pm). What a privilege, to have a glimpse into this amazing’s person’s life - we present to you our very own local artist/S.H.O.P. volunteer Jennie Havord, whose stories and life experience are abundant and versatile, from working in TV and film production, to homesteading on a farm in Scotland and writing books, it seems there was never a dull moment in her life. We are very lucky to have her and her lovely art (some of which you can see and buy in our S.H.O.P.) with us in the S.H.O.P. in Chippenham, Wiltshire, Planet Earth.
For all you sweet toothers out there (I’m one of them!) and lovers of beautiful hand-made gifts and toys (who isn’t?!) have a sneak peak into the world of Louise Skeates - the mastermind and super-productive creative owner behind Rubydoo Cakes & Rubydoo Toys, everyone’s favourite cake & toy shop in Chippenham! If, like us, you didn’t realise this lady does everything by herself, down to the design of her mugs, cards, crocheting, sewing and of course, making all the cakes! Prepare to be blown away, because we haven’t met such a productive person in a while. And of course drop them a visit, and in this podcast hear all about the “experiment” Ed will conduct in partnership with Rubydoo. And as a cherry on top, you get to see Lauren testing one of their vegan gluten-free milkshakes. Yum!

Brushing on topics such as healthy living (being a conscious consumer as opposed to buying into marketing strategies), being conscious and active in local politics as a way of doing your bit wherever you are (as a part of a global movement), coming together to use arts as a means of sending some positive vibes out there in the world (and fundraising for those in need as we did last week), and many more, just watch it, I won’t spoil it for you. Happy 150th episode of our S.H.O.P. podcast everyone! We had some wonderful guests over the past two years since we started (in the middle of the pandemic), and it has all been centered around our community hub “Social Hub of Positivity” in Emery Gate. And what a positive place it is, completely volunteer-run, 6 full days a week, so Ed thanks our wonderful volunteers in this episode and looks back on yesterday, when we had another very positive event in our S.H.O.P.- the fundraising “Songathon” that brought together many musicians from our community. Ed chats to a very interesting individual who goes by the name of Toshi Parsons! Ed meets his old friend and Kandu Arts supporter Melanie C, before her amazing performance on Chalfest, where she was kind enough to invite us to see her. Melanie has been supporting Kandu for the last 23 (out of the 25) years, and has helped us help many people by funding projects that support and raise awareness of the homeless, refugees, children in care, mental health, domestic violence, etc. up and down the country, and internationally. Melanie has donated money from concerts, recorded songs (including in our Kandu Arts studio in Chippenham) and auctioned her own clothes to support us, she is truly a special person with a huge heart. Ed says “I’m very proud to call her my friend”. Viva Melanie!!
Ed visits Bromham and the wonderful, relaxing place that is the “Five Elements Retreat” centre with the lovely Trudi Speirs, a qualified Reiki practitioner and sound healer. She introduces her home/workspace to us and tells us more about the relaxation healing packages she offers. Personal note from the editor: If you live in Chippenham, or in fact any small town, this podcast is for you. It shows the alarming case of anti-democratic practices of some of our elected councillors. It really shook my beliefs in the core values of British society, and raised a fear that my own values like, democracy, freely expressing your opinion, questioning the norm, protecting the vulnerable, providing each individual with equal opportunities, aren’t in line with the core values that our elected town councillors adhere to. It saddens me to think that in the 21st century the youngest and most vulnerable members of society are deprived of the already rare, few and far between opportunities, because of something like this, which seems more like a personal vendetta than a democratic process.
