First note:
Change of how we do meetings:
Instead of having a monthly meeting to go through the things in The Haps, I'd like to try a different approach for the 2nd half of 2024, to see if it's more efficient.
Here's what I'm thinking:
- I share The Haps each month
- If you have something specific you want to discuss, we'll plan a 1:1 meeting to discuss it (others can join if they have the same question / issue as well). But the idea is to only involve the people who need to be in the meeting.
- For specific brainstorming, projects, etc., we'll put together an ad hoc meeting dedicated to that.
I'd wanted to try out the shorter group meetings, to address questions that came up from The Haps, but I'm not sure it's 100% valuable to everyone in the meetings... and there's nothing worse than sitting in on a meeting where you feel like you don't need to be there!
So I'd like to try out this approach for the 2nd half of 2024, and see if it's more effective!
In this episode :
- ECC launch coming in September! Looking to build up excitement between now and then, and get some good momentum from "back to school"!
- As of Sept. 1, we're going to oblige all 1:1 clients to book at least 4 sessions in advance with their coach. Lyndsie is sending out 3 emails about this (in July, in August, and in September) to give them a heads up. When you see your clients, please ask that they got the message, and then book them in!
- English coaching: This is indeed part of the framework for the new direction that we're going in (one of the principles is "Speaking the language of business") so there will continue to be a need for it, but as we have been seeing, there will be fewer clients than with the CPF. So if you are looking to pick up hours elsewhere, I'm happy to write a recommendation to support you!
- I've put together a principle-based brochure for SBEC, which I re-branded as "Speak & Lead" for now to move away from "English teaching". I'm open to suggestions for the name, but I would like to keep it short & snappy. For people/companies that do contact us for English coaching, it allows us to get them on board with the principles and the outcomes of the program, without having to say specifics like "we help you with meetings, negotiations, etc.", which would be very limiting.
- If you would like to have a look and offer suggestions, we can book in to discuss it. Here is an example brochure.
- I'm working on productizing / standardizing the offer for helping solopreneurs, service providers, and SMEs get American clients, but need to do more customer research to follow up on the interviews I did back in September. If you have people who fit this ideal profile, please let me know so I can organize an interview!
- Ideal profile: Solopreneurs, small service agencies, or other SMEs who are already serving at least one US client, or who have decided that's what they want to do. They already know how painful their problem is, and want to solve their revenue goals by selling more to the US clients (examples: Sophie Parent, Virginie Mention, etc.)
- The pain point : They want to make more money, have more clients
- The best way to do that: Get clients in the US (more money, faster buying cycle)
- The struggle : They’re not getting results with US prospects OR they don’t know how to get US clients, even though they know it's what they want to grow their biz
- The idea in the long term will be that it will be the signature offer that can be run by any of us, because we'll have the course material, and you'll be trained on it.

Here's the Haps for May 2024 (way late... I do apologize!)
First note:
Next meeting is on Tuesday 21 May, usual time :
- 8:30 EST
- 14:30 CEST
- 8:30pm Vietnam
- 9:30pm Japan --> If that's too late Matthew, you can catch the notes / recording, and send over any questions or ideas you might have!
Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2788901212
Passcode: AWESOME
In this episode :
- CPF: After trying to get back in 4 times, I give up! Better in the long term to focus on marketing, offers, positioning, etc. rather than paperwork I think
- Prospecting: I'm aiming to get conversations going with 15-30 people per day via LinkedIn or email, who could be part of our target market
- Training: I've signed up for a 1-year accelerator program: Key Person of Influence, to help , designed for founders who have a small team in place already and now want to build up the reputation of the company to become THE reference in their industry.
- ...but for this, we need to position ourselves with a signature program that has a very clear focus, goal, and transformation that we take them through, with a concrete result
- This way we can have one signature program for Business English with Christina, and one signature program for American Market Alchemist, and that's it.
- ECC would not be the signature program, as it would be more what they call "a product for prospects", i.e. a smaller-priced program designed to get people into your ecosystem before they perhaps move up towards the signature program
- The idea with the signature program is that it has a clear program, outcome, etc. and is easily "templatable", meaning it can have an online course they can go through, group sessions, private session upgrades, etc. It would make things easier in terms of teaching, management, and programming, as you wouldn't be starting from scratch with every client.
- I'd like to get some ideas from you on what might be the focus of this BEwC signature program, that could somewhat tie in with the American Market Alchemist side of the business, so that they connect in a logical way, and for both we're attracting a similar type of ideal client, but not necessarily for the same exact need/outcome.
- For American Market Alchemist, I'll likely be focusing on things like their LinkedIn presence & influence, reaching out to US contacts, etc.
- BEwC ideas might include ... --> to be brainstormed!
- Thanks Matthew for sharing that Diary of a CEO podcast about a month ago... it's how I discovered the program and the guy that created it, and then went down a rabbit hole consuming all his content to be sure the program was worth it!
- I forgot to mention this in the recording, but we now have ECC enrollment "closed", we invite people to get on a waitlist, and then open up enrollments every 2-3 months.
- The idea : it takes MUCH less of a commitment to get on a waitlist than to sign up for a program, and creates scarcity. We have about 12 people on the waitlist for now, and we open enrollments the week of May 27. We'll see what effect this has on enrollments into ECC.

- January Get-Together: Tues. 29 Feb.
- When: Regular time (8:30am - 2:30pm - 8:30am) but New format: only 30 minutes!
- Where: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2788901212?pwd=QUszaUQwTEU4Qnpra1d3TzBEd0w0UT09
Code secret: AWESOME
- Updates on CPF :
- We requested to get back in, they asked for about 15 documents, which we sent and are now waiting
- In the meantime, Andrew is looking into other companies we might be able to partner with temporarily (or more long term if we don't get back in!) to allow us to respond favorably to CPF requests
- What's coming in the future
- SBEC launch ongoing, finishes Feb. 6
- Promote ECC 2nd half of Feb - goal: Get 20 new people in by the end of March
- Updates on sales & marketing
- AirCorsica perhaps interested to sign up 1 person for ECC (and that could be a gateway to more in the future perhaps !) + 2 people for SBEC - she has to get back to me next week
- Dell was interested to have us in their catalogue (met with their HR today), but they only work through CPF for English training... She was sympathetic, and I told her I'd update her as we got news. It would be for Feb-March anyway on their side, so maybe we'll be back in by then
- May have another Hubspot person coming in
- Sheila : Still looking into companies in Brazil
- If you have other leads for companies NOT in France or how to reach out to them, I'm all ears!
- Questions & concerns about the future without CPF
- Some of you have asked about this, and to be transparent: We will very likely have fewer 1:1 clients without CPF, unless other companies sign up several people.
- My goal is to keep everyone for as long as you're happy to be a part of the team, but I also understand that you need to be sure that you have enough hours and pay to be comfortable. So if you want to pick up hours at other places and would like letters of recommendation, I'm more than happy to help! I love working with all of you as much as possible, but I also understand that you have to look out for you first! So just ask if you need a letter of recommendation for picking up hours elsewhere to supplement your BEwC hours!
- We are also working to see what other types of programs we could offer, such as short group programs on business communication skills, with 2-3 1:1 sessions as an upsell, online courses, etc. But again, that will not replace the volume of hours that we had with CPF 1:1 programs, but this will not be until April as we have the SBEC launch, the ECC promotion, and then will need some time to find what topic the short course could be on specifically, and then come up with a plan to sell it.
- If you're on LI, you probably see that I'm communicating a lot about working with Americans, getting US clients, etc. We just launched an online course on that topic, with 6 sign ups (so we were happy, given that we lacked the 3 months of audience & list-buildling that should have been done prior to launching). Rest assured that we are still working also on offers for more general English for business communication & communication skills. But having a very specific position on social media allows you to stand out from the mass, and that's a good thing for attracting business. And then some people will need the US-specific stuff, some people more biz communication stuff, and that will be a discussion to have with the clients individually. But we are still offering and still developing that side as well (notably with the short program idea!)
- If you have ANY questions about anything, reach out and we can find a time to meet to discuss it.

VACATION
- On vacation in Brittany (near Andrew) 8 - 29 July, but still connected if you need anything. Just might be a bit slower.
- Please take some days off this summer at least to rest, relax, recharge. If you need to arrange substitutes for your FFCC sessions, put a message on the message board Summer holiday substitute FFCC arrangements
JULY
FFCC GROWTH
- FFCC Growth & Development meeting for FFCC Leaders Tues. July 18 at the regular meeting time
- Continuing to focus on growing FFCC by featuring the podcast as the main attraction in the newsletter
- Mondays on LinkedIn, I share a teaser for the podcast, to get more people onto the email list
- For the moment, we’re at 91 FFCC only members. Still working towards our goal of 150, aim to get there by the end of the year
- Gabby is working on an evergreen FFCC launch sequence for people when they sign up to the newsletter as well
- Trisha is working on getting client insights & feedback to be able to update the FFCC sales page and help Gabby with the copy for the evergreen sequence
- Demo sessions
B2B DEVELOPMENT
- Worked with a biz dev mid-May to mid-June, prospected 480 companies in our target profile, mixed campaign that included LinkedIn reach out & follow up, emails, phone calls, and had zero immediate outcome, most saying they didn’t need it, not an issue for them, etc.
- That being said, we got more responses from HR people than from small company CEOS/founders
- Focus more on HR for the long term, but they take loooooong to decide!
- Founders often said they go through governmental organizations like French Tech, BPI (Public investment bank), Business France, etc.
- Approached/am approaching them, and met several people from these organizations in my networking events
- Cultivating those contacts, offering to organize workshops, etc. to get in front of their audience
- Repositioning - ongoing research with Ashley
- Our business is high-end but we’re positioned in a market that people don’t want to pay a lot for. So we need to find out what they DO pay a lot for.
- Trying to change people’s minds about value of what we do is a long-haul job. Shortcut this by figuring out what they’re already paying a lot of money for.
- Met with an HR consultant at a French Tech event, and he talked about positioning ourselves as doing an audit of their international / intercultural communication, telling them what’s good & bad, and then selling them a package to fix the bad stuff.
Once we figure all this out, we are going to be wonderful!!
- Working on ideas to get away from 1:1 as the base offer, because it requires a lot of admin work per client (especially for Qualiopi), and changing up the business model
- Be reassured that the goal there is to be able to charge more per hour (because group /hybrid) to pay more per hour
SST SOFT LAUNCH
- SST soft launch - send out a few emails to encourage people to join SST
- New offers at https://mybusinessenglishcourses.com/successful-small-talk-join-now
- Part of this is to re-test hybrid offers that have some synchronous & some asynchronous aspect
- Upsell of some private sessions when they sign up
- Long-term aim = to add these kinds of offers to our “menu” of what we offer, and to fill in the gap between FFCC and SBEC
- We’ll see the results & reaction, but we know that it’s summer, etc.

- Million Dollar Consulting

Here's what's in The Haps this month:
Upcoming events:
- Awards ceremony this Wednesday May 3
- SBEC 2.0 launch - May 2023
- B2B prospecting & content strategy
Priorities for the next 3-4 months (still) haven't changed:
- Growing FFCC
- As part of this goal AND our content strategy for the next few months, we're going to send the podcast out each week to the newsletter list and pause video production for June, July, August. This will allow me to focus more energy & effort on B2B prospecting. Speaking of which...
- B2B prospecting
- The LinkedIn strategy I was doing in April didn't bring in a great ROI compared to the time spent doing it (i.e 4-6 hours per day), so we're going to work on optimizing those processes for more automated B2B reach out and being more super focused on our target market
- We're ramping up the efforts on this by :
- Creating a new website in French for French companies: https://www.coachingenanglais.com/ (I put this together over the weekend, so it is still very "work in progress". If you see any mistakes, things that are not clear, etc., suggestions, please let me know!
- Putting together a B2B outreach strategy with a guy that helped me get the LinkedIn strategy in place (which was a good strategy, just too hands-on. So now we're going to be looking at what can be optimized & automatized now that we have a better view of what to do & who to target)
Reminder of goals for these 2 points:
FFCC: Aim is to have a recurring-income program cover our base expenses and be our mass market product
B2B: Our source of growth, reputation, prestige, recurring clients, more high-ticket clients, etc.
As I mentioned above, we'll be pausing video production for the next 3 months so I can focus on B2B prospection. Over the past few months, views on the YT videos have been much lower than in the past, possibly because our topics are more niche and not the kind of topics that YouTube viewers tend to watch a lot, like "50 phrasal verbs in 10 minutes". Good for views, not so much for conversion (I feel, anyway...)
So I'll be focusing my efforts on B2B prospecting instead of video creation.
And instead of sending the videos to the email list, we'll send them the FFCC podcast each week!
I feel like this is a good change to test, and also a chance to put the spotlight on FFCC and the podcast to an audience who may not even know that we have a podcast!
So starting in June, we'll send them the podcast instead of videos (as all our videos for May are already shot, and are part of the SBEC launch as well).
And we'll see what comes of this (temporary??) change in content strategy. Who knows, we might have some pleasant surprises come out of it!
Next team get-together :
Tues. March 16, at the regular time: 8:30 EST / 14:30 CEST / 8:30pm Vietnam

Here's what's in The Haps this month:
Upcoming events:
- Beta Launch for the Pitch Accelerator program - April 2023
- SBEC 2.0 launch - May 2023
- B2B prospecting
Priorities for the next 3-4 months haven't changed:
- Growing FFCC
- B2B prospecting
- With Ashley, we set a goal of 10 new contacts per day on LinkedIn - 20 sales interviews per month - close 5 deals per month
I'm going to need some help with this process, and I'll be reaching out to some of you to see if / how you can support me in this!
Reminder of goals for these 2 points:
FFCC: Aim is to have a recurring-income program cover our base expenses and be our mass market product

Here's what's in The Haps this month:
Upcoming events:
- SBEC Launch in March (re-using an old launch, basically the aim is to do a launch with as little original work as possible)
- Monthly webinars: Next one is Mon. April 3, most likely with a guest from Orbiss
- Beta launch of a program (on pitching?) in April
- Can do a BEM pre-launch in May, but we’ll need a team to manage it so that I’m focusing my efforts on the B2B shift
Priorities for the next 3-4 months
Already seeing promising signs from both, and both are going to ensure better results in the long term.
FFCC: Aim is to have a recurring-income program cover our base expenses and be our mass market product
B2B: Our source of growth, reputation, prestige, recurring clients, more high-ticket clients, etc.

Here's what's on the Haps for this month:
* FFCC launch results
* Goal (20-30-40) VS sign ups (26)
* Thanks Sheila, Kristina, Marica
* Notion update
* End of the month: Live lesson Q&A with FFCC students (bonus)
* Vocabulary quiz on the vocabulary of the month — will be reaching out to some of you to see who might be interested in taking on that work (paid, of course!)
* SBEC Launch coming in March: FULL option only
* Why? Simplify! Fewer choices = better conversions
* Can up or down sell afterwards
* Reste à charge CPF coming soon, date unknown
* Re-using a past launch 98% so that the launch takes minimum attention from me, so that I can focus on customer reach-out
* Bootcamp group sessions for entrepreneurs/start-ups idea?
* Got some positive feedback on this during some of my reach-out calls
* Wondering if we can light beta test this
* Send out a few emails
* Talk it up on social media
* See if we get any takers
* 1-month thing for a low price (300€), just to test & validate the concept
- Calling all former & current SBEC / BEM students for land & expand.
- Some people seem interested in talking us up to their HR / coworkers. But this is definitely a longer-term strategy
- Aim: Make this a regulary, recurring process that happens a few weeks after a student finishes
* Case study work
* Met with Janeen, need to meet with Karyn & Andrew
* Goal of case studies ?
- Repositioning: * New LinkedIn title to experiment with positioning: I help French tech scale-ups understand the language & the rules of the game to succeed in the US market | 19+ years experience | American in France
- Ship 30 for 30 program advice was "Create & own your niche" - Why we're being this specific
- Starting a course on Neuromarketing with a guy who is an expert in sales calls & vide conferences, also validated this positioning
- Doesn’t mean we ONLY work with this profile, but we have to niche down to something very specific & identifiable
- Why we are not only focusing case studies on these profiles: so we can have lookalike case studies to send to other companies who contact us
- Positioning us this way allows us to be in the marketing & sales support box, more than the English training box
- More valuable to companies
- According to the Neuromarketing guy : This type of training goes for around 5000-12000€ programs, depending on the program duration, content, etc. But these numbers are based on the kinds of things he saw in his work with companies & his research work, so not just imaginary numbers
* Lead generation
* Working with someone to set up Sales Navigator & Google alerts to get alerts when these companies publish news (raised funds, going to a big event in the US, hiring Americans, etc.) and warm them up before contacting them directly for a call.
* Most likely will work with someone who will call the companies to book sales appointments with me, but that’s after we get Sales Navigator & the warm up process up & running
Did I miss anything? Something you have questions or comments about? Put it all in the comments!

Hi everyone,
Here's our June edition of The Haps!
It's been a crazy month of May, between the Learning Technologies Salon in Paris, Berlin with my sister, and then a wedding in Besançon this past weekend!
Results of the BEM Launch
- We got 10 sign-ups (compared to 8 this time last year) + 5 SBEC sign-ups (same as last year), but interestingly, 90% of them came in before the midcart bonuses disappeared, and then only 1 between midcart & cart close! To be analyzed & interpreted with Ashley... Maybe we can shorten the launch period next time!
- Marica & Lyndsie did some great team work to export contacts of people who visited the sales page, and reach out to them individually for an appointment for more information. But it was quite labor-intensive, so I'll meet with Lyndsie to talk about if this was worth it, and to look at contact-booking-show up-sign up rates.
- We'll have our BEM Kickoff Session on June 16 at 1-2pm France time. You are all welcome to come to the session to say hello & welcome the new students if you would like. Janeen & Karyn & Kristina will be there for sure! Just let me know!
Customer support updates
- Lyndsie has started sending weekly reminders to book lessons, every Sunday, to all students doing individual lessons. Please let us know if this is working (i.e. if you see more regular bookings from your students).
- Because the CPF people are being stricter and stricter about programs ending on the announced dates, we cannot allow students to extend their programs anymore. So if you see a student absent for 2 weeks (except SBEC LIGHT students), let Kristina know asap so we can chase them down to make sure they book.
- We got our welcome cards to send by the post to new students! This is part of the work Matthew and I are doing to make the onboarding experience of new students awesome. Send me your postal address and I'll send you a card so you can see what they look like!
LinkedIn:
- My LinkedIn Bootcamp is coming to an end this week, and posting one time per day for 30 days straight has been intense! But it has definitely helped build up the routine necessary for finding inspiration, writing, publishing, responding to comments, and commenting on others' posts.
- LinkedIn continues to be a good source of quality leads, so I plan to continue this after the bootcamp (though probably taking a break on the weekends!)
Next get-together:
- Tues. June 21! Let me know if you have any topics you'd like us to talk about!
Next trips for me (almost done with them!)
- My annual bike trip with friends, from 8-12 June
- in Paris to shoot some videos for a big training company for French entrepreneurs (great exposure for one of our top target audiences!), from 13-15 June
- a quick trip to Italy June 23-24
What I'm reading & listening to at the moment:
Not much right now, just trying to stay on top of everything while / in between traveling. Not sure who put my schedule together for May-June, but I told her she needs to plan better next time! ;-)
See you on Tues. 24 for our next get-together! Our last one before July summer break!

Hi everyone,
It's finally here, the May Haps!
Late again, but I'm working on getting this habit in place still! Bear with me ;-)
On the agenda:
May = BEM launch!
- This is our big priority for the month, and we're trying different techniques to make it bigger and better! Details in the podcast.
- One thing I forgot to mention in the podcast: Marica (and possibly Lyndsie) will personally reach out to people who click the sales page link in the launch emails, to invite them for an informational call to know more about the program and see if it's for them.
- I got a lot of ideas for the launch from a podcast episode "Dans les coulisses d'un lancement à 7 chiffres" (EN= "Behind the scenes of a 7-figure launch"), and wrote up an English recap of the lessons and ideas from that episode in this document.
BEM. 2.0
- Karyn, Janeen and I re-worked the format of BEM and it is better than ever (at least we think so... but we'll have to get students' verdict on it!)
- You can see our brainstorming notes, how we arrived at the new format, and what we decided on in this document.
- You can also see the text for the updated version of the sales page in this document (Bilel is currently working on updating the sales page. It will be ready by Monday May 16)
Christina's travels
- Amidst all of the above, I'll be traveling for this dates:
- Tues. 17 - Fri. 20 (morning): In Paris for the Learning Technologies Salon. I'll bring back a field report!
- Fri. 27 - Wed. June 1: My sister is coming to Berlin, and so I'll join her over there! It's the 2nd time she's been to Europe since I've been here, and we wanted to be able to meet up
- BUT... since it's the launch period, I'll still be doing some work in between visits so that everything goes smoothly for the launch. I could not do this without the help & support of the team, so you have me sincerest gratitude.
LinkedIn:
- I'm officially starting LinkedIn Bootcamp today, which means 1 post per day for 30 days straight (weekends included). Wish me luck!
- The aim is to build up visibility on LinkedIn, generate more inbound leads, get in front of more companies & corporate clients, and diversify our client base with more people in our ideal client profile.
- Matthew continues to work on his routine for LinkedIn, and he'll be sharing the blog post/video and FFCC podcast each week.
- If you want to follow and comment (no pressure, honestly!!) here's my LinkedIn profile.
- After a month of searching, talking to sales people, and discussing it with Ashley, I've signed up to start working with the lead-generation company LeadIn. I'll be testing it for a few months to see the results... Look for that in a future Haps episode!
What I'm reading & listening to at the moment:
- Tim Ferriss: How to build a world-class network in record time
- How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, by Donald Robertson
See you on Tues. 24 for our next get-together!
