Mirasee FM

Want to create a hugely successful online course, one that has a major impact on the lives of your students? If you want to learn how to create online courses from the best, you turn to Mirasee; and if you want to host that course, you can’t go wrong using the powerful platform, Ruzuku.

Ruzuku co-founder Abe Crystal and Mirasee founder and CEO Danny Iny know what it takes to stand out and be successful in the online courses industry. And now they’re teaming up to share this intel with you in their new Course Lab podcast.

In every episode, Course Lab showcases an entrepreneur/course creator who is nailing it with their online course -- and not because they’re teaching people how to make more money. In fact, most of these creators occupy unusual or overlooked niches, like music, writing for video games, overcoming inherent bias, and finding your life purpose.

Turns out, the key to their success all comes down to their online course design. In this podcast, Danny and Abe reveal the most important design tactics that are making all the difference for these online course creators -- and how you can implement them in your own online course. So if you want to create a successful online course that changes the lives of your students, this is your big chance to learn how it’s done from the best in the industry!

Michael Bungay Stanier is at the forefront of shaping how organizations around the world make being coach-like an essential leadership competency. His book The Coaching Habit “unweirds coaching.” It is the best-selling coaching book of this century, with over a million copies sold and more than ten thousand five-star reviews on Amazon. In 2019, he was named the #1 thought leader in coaching. Michael was the first Canadian Coach of the Year, has been named a Global Coaching Guru since 2014, and was a Rhodes Scholar. His most recent book, How to Work with (Almost) Anyone, shows how to build the Best Possible Relationship with the key people at work.

Michael founded Box of Crayons, a learning and development company that had helped hundreds of organizations transform from advice-driven to curiosity-led. (Learn more at BoxOfCrayons.com.) Michael is a compelling speaker and facilitator, combining practicality, humour, and an unprecedented degree of engagement with the audience. He’s spoken on stages and screens around the world in front of crowds ranging from ten to ten thousand. His TEDx talk has been watched by a million and a half people. (Learn more at MBS.works.)

En route to today—and these are essential parts of his origin story—Michael knocked himself unconscious as a laborer by hitting himself in the head with a shovel, mastered stagecraft at law school by appearing in a skit called Synchronized Nude Male Modelling, and his first paid piece of writing was a Harlequin Romance-esque story involving a misdelivered letter… called “The Male Delivery.”

Lenore Skenazy is the accidental pioneer of the “free-range kids movement” and literally wrote the book on the subject. Following that, she co-founded Let Grow, a nonprofit promoting childhood independence and resilience.

“The real problem is that our culture has insisted that adults always be supervising kids.”— Lenore Skenazy

After her newspaper column “Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone” created a media firestorm, Lenore Skenazy got the nickname “America’s Worst Mom.” (Google it!) She went on to write Free-Range Kids, the book-turned-movement that basically says OUR KIDS ARE SMARTER AND SAFER THAN OUR CULTURE GIVES THEM CREDIT FOR!Lenore has lectured everywhere from DreamWorks to Microsoft to Harvard Med School, Yale Child Study Center — and the Bulgarian Happiness Festival! (For real.) On TV, you may have seen her on The Today Show, The Daily Show, or her own reality show, World’s Worst Mom. Now Lenore is co-founder and president of Let Grow, the nonprofit promoting childhood independence and resilience. She lives in New York City with her husband and beloved computer. Her children are gainfully employed. (Phew!) And for the record, she used to write for Mad Magazine. Yep. MAD. But now she's so serious that her piece “Independence as Therapy” was in The New York Times.

“Teacher Tom” Hobson is an early childhood educator, international speaker, education consultant, teacher of teachers, parent educator, and author. He is best known, however, for his namesake blog, Teacher Tom's Blog, where he has posted daily for over a decade, chronicling the life and times of his little preschool in the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest corner of the USA.

For nearly two decades, Teacher Tom was the sole employee of the Woodland Park Cooperative School, a parent-owned and operated school knit together by Teacher Tom's democratic, progressive play-based pedagogy. Teacher Tom came into teaching through the backdoor, so to speak, having enrolled his own child in a cooperative preschool, where he began working daily in his daughter's classroom as an assistant teacher under the tutelage of veteran educators — although he'll be the first to tell you that most of what he learned came from the children themselves. When it was time for his daughter to move on, he “stayed behind.”

Today, Teacher Tom shares his play-based pedagogy through online e-courses for early childhood educators; produces online early childhood conferences; consults with organizations about his "Family Schools" program; and inspires early-years audiences around the world (Greece, UK, Iceland, Australia, China, Vietnam, New Zealand, Canada, and across the US) both virtually and in-person with his engaging views on early childhood education, play, and pedagogy.

He was pressured by his blog readers into authoring his first book, aptly named Teacher Tom’s First Book, and is thrilled about the 2023 release of Teacher Tom’s Second Book.

Michael Sheridan is “Ireland's favorite dream expert,” the author of two books, and a radio host. His passion is to see people become all they came here to be and help them live their lives to their fullest potential.

In this episode, Ari, Abe, and Michael discuss:
* Michael’s background and how he got into online courses * Teaching a sensitive and personal topic within a group setting * Building connections and engaging with students * How Michael discovered he had a sales problem and worked through it * Michael’s thoughts about what should be free versus paid

“It just helped enormously by moving online in terms of the efficiency and the effectiveness of everything I did. And I was able to maximize the amount of people I could work with.”– Michael Sheridan

Michael Sheridan is Ireland's favorite dream expert. He was a regular on the #1 TV talk show in Ireland, Ireland AM, as well as a regular on Ireland's most popular radio shows, including the Inbox on 98FM, sharing the stage with both metaphysical and movie stars such as Paddy McMahon and Frank Vincent. He's appeared on the BBC and countless other premier media outlets, interpreting dreams for his wide audience.

He's the author of two books as well as a radio host with his own show on KKNW. His passion is to see people become all they came here to be and to live their lives to their fullest potential. He does this by interpreting dreams. From reading your dreams, he can give clear direction on your life purpose, reveal the gifts that you brought with you to help achieve that purpose, and uncover the blocks you need to overcome in order to step into alignment.

With a focus on helping clients heal childhood trauma, Michael launched his first course in 1992. In 2012, he added online courses to his offerings, and by 2015, after much experimentation, he switched entirely to an online hybrid model using the Ruzuku platform. The hybrid model greatly increased course reach, course efficiency, and course effectiveness, and laid the framework for many later courses.

In this episode, Abe and Barbara explore:* How she decided on her target audience * The modalities of her instruction and interaction with students * Customizing her offering and incorporating feedback * Exploring the emotional aspect of the problems your students face * The importance of a clear customer focus

“I started getting really dramatic results, like people absolutely stopping their intractable behaviors…. And that's when I thought, I'm the only one who's doing this.”– Dr. Barbara Birsinger

Creator of the Behavior Decoding Method™, Dr. Barbara Birsinger has invested over three decades studying, researching, and innovating a system to put an end to food and body-image struggles. More than 70 percent of the population, mostly women, encounter these challenges fueled by a culture obsessed with weight, size, and appearance rather than real health, self-love, and appreciating diversity.

Dr. Birsinger has worked with people from all walks of life: CEOs, students, doctors, professionals, entrepreneurs, stay-at-home moms, and more. In the process she designed a revolutionary system for revealing the deeper meaning, purpose, and intended positive outcome in eating and weight-related behaviors. This includes revising limiting beliefs and identity, as well as fulfilling spiritual longings that are essential for lasting change.

To make a greater global impact with her work, she has secured a U.S. Patent Pending for the development of a mobile app based on her Food & Body Code® program, which will also serve as a referral tool to match individuals looking for support with experienced professionals trained in her methods to reach a broader audience and extend the healing.

Dr. Birsinger thrives on training health and mental health practitioners and experienced coaches in her certification and continuing-education courses. She also enjoys professional speaking to diverse groups on broader topics that also are derived from her Mind-Body Core Code™ principles. From professional organizations to large training and speaking events, Dr. Birsinger enjoys motivating audiences while providing new and provocative information to help them find more peace, freedom, and living their dreams.

John Bowen was in the right place at the right time, being CEO of two large financial advisory firms in Silicon Valley in the 1990s. And from that vantage point, he had noticed a gap in the industry — far too many financial advisors were reinventing the wheel when it came to research. So he started CEG Worldwide in 2000, which is now the world’s leading coaching firm for financial advisors.

In this episode Danny, Abe, and John talk about:* Clarity of focus and clarity of outcome * The intentionality of focusing on the affluent segment * The value of market research * Having a “moat” in your industry

After the discussion, stay tuned for Danny and Abe’s debriefing, containing their key takeaways.

We're very, very, very clear that we're going to help them race up this hierarchy of advisor success that I'm describing. And that it's not only the money part, but they're going to have this amazing life of significance.– John Bowen

John Bowen is the founder and CEO of CEG Worldwide, the world’s leading coaching firm for financial advisors. Since 2000, Bowen and his team have had the privilege of coaching elite financial advisors to build simple, elegant wealth management businesses that serve their affluent clients extremely well while building lives of significance for themselves, their teams, and their loved ones.

Before founding CEG Worldwide, Bowen worked directly with affluent clients as a financial advisor for 26 years, managing up to $2 billion in assets before selling his firm. Following the sale of his firm, he became CEO of Assante Capital Management. Under his leadership, Assante more than tripled assets under management to more than $25 billion.

Bowen is widely recognized as a leader in the financial services industry. Over three decades, he has delivered hundreds of keynote presentations and workshops to thousands of top advisors around the world. He is also the author or co-author of more than a dozen books.

In this special episode, Danny and Abe examine ChatGPT (and artificial intelligence broadly) as a free and simple tool for course creators. And as with most things free and simple, there’s the “for better or for worse” with this rapidly developing technology. Anyone creating or thinking about creating online courses needs to know the opportunities and pitfalls that are here and on the horizon.

In this episode Danny and Abe explore:* What ChatGPT is and isn’t * Danny’s bio as generated by ChatGPT — the good, the bad, and the ugly * The impact of AI on the value of information-based courses * The right way and wrong way to use this technology * How AI is affecting higher education * The benefits of these tools for idea generation * And much more

Another big advantage over a human, moderately competent assistant: You can only tell a human so many times, ‘You got it wrong, try again.’ ChatGPT will never be offended. So you can keep sending it back until you're happy with what you've got.– Danny InyResources or websites mentioned in this episode:MiraseeChatGPT

With decades in radio, acting in 100+ TV shows, and voiceover work all along the way, David Lawrence XVII began to get questions from people. They wanted to know how to get into voiceover work, what equipment is needed, how to make money, and much more. With classic entrepreneurial spirit, David created several courses to teach students how to succeed as voice talent. That modest beginning has now grown into 30+ courses, a team of coaches, and a vibrant community — all under the business name VO Heroes.

Fun Fact: David is regarded as the first podcaster, dating to 1994 when he sent out audio to subscribers over the Internet as a “Personal Netcast.”

In this episode Danny, Abe, and David talk about:* How you should never let your looks, beliefs, or age hold you back (David’s first on-camera work was at age 50!) * Building a course business that fits your lifestyle — or fits with your other business * The ways David has built gamification and other support mechanisms into his courses * How professional performers “work out” and how these workouts are built into his program * Overcoming the perception that marketing is a “bad word” * And more

After the discussion, stay tuned for Danny and Abe’s debriefing, containing their key takeaways

“I have luckily been involved in communities and groups that have given us a joy of marketing rather than a fear or loathing of marketing… being at peace with understanding that you need to be able to market and price and invoice and collect.”– David Lawrence XVII

David Harvard Lawrence XVII is an American television and film actor, voice talent, network radio host, Internet entrepreneur, podcaster, demo producer, teacher, and author, best known for his role as The Puppetmaster on NBC's sci-fi series Heroes. He was also the host of the daily The David Lawrence Show and weekend Online Tonight, both nationally syndicated radio talk shows that revolved around pop culture and the high-tech lifestyle. Today, in addition to his performance work, he runs his highly acclaimed online course business, VO Heroes.

The "XVII" in his name was a way for Lawrence to distinguish himself from previous David Lawrences already registered with the Screen Actors Guild. At the time, he was the 17th David Lawrence listed on IMDb, and appended the number to his name upon his own registry.

The classic immigrant success story, Happi Leopold moved from Cameroon to Canada with $200 in his pocket and no understanding of English. Nonetheless, he landed a job at a bank and worked his way up to advising clients and managing portfolios to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. Today, he runs his own company — Easy Finance Academy — through which he teaches ordinary people the same principles he used to advise wealthy investors. In this episode Danny, Abe, and Happi discuss:* Teaching students in a highly challenging and regulated field like finance * How to navigate student expectations especially when there is significant downside risk * Differentiating your course when there is so much competing information available * The importance of developing a larger business around your courses

After the discussion, stay tuned for Danny and Abe’s debriefing, containing their key takeaways.

“So the way I look at this, I'm not just running courses — I'm running a business around my courses.”

Mirasee owners Danny Iny and Bhoomi Pathak tackle the unique challenges as well as benefits of working with a spouse or significant other. Each episode features a guest couple who also share their experiences, perspectives, and hard-earned wisdom.

“We do just have a ridiculous amount of fun together." – Amy Port“We had been working together for years before we became a couple, so we already had some of those work roles, responsibilities, even rhythms and routines in place.” – Michael Port
Michael Port has written nine books which have been featured on the bestseller lists of the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly and have been selected by Amazon and 800-CEO-READ as “best books of the year.”

He was once a professional actor, having received his MFA from NYU’s Graduate Acting Program, guest starring on shows like Sex & The City and Law & Order, and in films like The Pelican Brief and Down to Earth. These days, Michael can be seen on MSNBC, CNBC, and PBS as an on air expert in communication and business development and as the host of the most popular podcast on public speaking and performance, Steal the Show with Michael Port.

Amy Port is the Co-Founder and President of Heroic Public Speaking; her work extends from the execution of corporate training packages, to development of CEO keynotes, private masterclasses and coaching.

After earning her MFA in Acting from The Yale School of Drama, Amy spent years acting professionally in theaters such as Seattle Repertory, Oregon Shakespeare and Yale Rep, and working consistently in commercials. She now applies the skills of performance that only well-trained actors know to the coaching of ‘non-actors’ looking to crush their sales presentations, to make their voices heard in TED Talk style presentations, and to take the big stage keynoting major conferences.

Welcome to To Lead Is Human. This new show, hosted by executive business coach Sharon Richmond, helps listeners envision how they can uplevel their leadership and shape cultures of accountability, respect, and candor.

“And so one of my deepest values is to respect the deep dimensionality of every human in that you have to take every human as a unique instance of an entire world.” – Dart Lindsley
Dart Lindsley leads Global Process Excellence for People Operations at Google. Before joining Google, Dart led the Human Resources Transformation Planning and Analysis organization for Cisco Systems.

Dart founded the Business architecture and Employee Experience Design teams at Cisco. By focusing these two very different disciplines on questions of talent, Dart and his team came to an important insight: employees are not just inputs to production as they are usually framed, they are customers, and work is a product companies sell to them.

Ever since, Dart has been using tools from marketing and product design to delve into what people really want from work (spoiler alert - it's not what you think), and ways in which companies can build and deliver an extraordinary work-experience product. For more than 30 years, Sharon Richmond has partnered with C-level executives from mid-size and small, fast-growing companies who want to up-level their leadership and build companies they are proud of. Clients accelerate their leadership by embracing mindset and behavior changes, building self-awareness and self-management skills, and focusing on the three things all leaders must ensure: focus, energy and delivery.

Sharon’s purpose as an executive coach is to help leaders 10X their impact by leveraging the power afforded by their roles to build organizations that are forces for good, both economically and socially. She also advises CEOs on shaping organization culture and leading change.

Sharon has taught leadership at Stanford GSB, where she now helps leaders increase influence, manage conflict, and prepare to build high-performing teams.

Susan Schramm is Founder of Go to Market Impact LLC, a business consultancy that helps CEO's and boards get results faster when driving high-stakes strategies. She serves as a "strategy accelerator", an especially good ally for visionary senior leaders concerned their new strategy is going too slowly or worried it is getting off the rails.

A certified Woman Owned Business, the firm serves global and nationwide clients including businesses, nonprofits, universities, communities, and diverse supply chain ecosystems. Go To Market Impact's proprietary De-Risk System for Impact ℠ helps leaders systematically uncover the hidden risks of new strategies and develop a game plan to manage those risks. Ten percent of gross revenues of the firm are invested in programs and scholarships to equip purpose-led leaders.

Before starting her consultancy, Susan held executive roles with IBM, Siemens, Nokia, Viavi Networks. She has a proven record of accomplishment launching new products and services, innovative programs and brands, and new companies. Recent engagements include optimizing diverse industry supply chains, accelerating public safety innovation, implementing secure smart cities, readying the workforce of the future, and equipping purpose-led entrepreneurs around the globe to build sustainable businesses and create jobs.

Susan currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of the Nehemiah Project International Ministries, and has served on the boards of the YMCA, the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, and the Telecommunications Industry Association. Susan holds a BS in Management Sciences from Duke University.

Though she is energized by her work with purpose-led organizations, Susan's real passion is her faith and family.

When she was unable to keep up with demand for her in-person cooking classes, Meghan began offering video classes online. We are just about ready to kick off season two of Course Lab. Our next season promises great behind-the-scenes insights from course creators who are doing very interesting course designs and getting really powerful results. We’ll also talk with course builders about business models and structures that are making their businesses more scalable and lucrative. But before we do that, we thought it would be fun to compile some of the most frequently asked questions that come our way and answer them. If you have ever asked (or wanted to ask) Danny or Abe about course building, this might be your lucky day! In this episode we discuss:* What makes the difference between a successful course and one that is not? * How can you know if your course will sell? * How much time should you spend on making the course vs. marketing the course? * Do you really need to add coaching or support as part of your course? * How long does it take to go from zero to successful online course? * What’s the one thing Danny and Abe would add to a course to make it better? * …and more!

“And many of the most effective courses that I've seen and participated in are very, very carefully focused and have a minimum amount of content to lead you forward into application and taking action.” – Abe CrystalDanny Iny is the founder and CEO of Mirasee and best-selling author of nine published books, including Teach Your Gift, Leveraged Learning, Teach and Grow Rich, The Audience Revolution, and Engagement from Scratch!. He is the co-host of the Course Lab podcast and executive producer of the Mirasee FM podcast network. Danny has developed innovative training programs that have raised the bar for online education. These include the Teach Your Gift Pro, ACES and Something From Scratch.

All of this grew out of humble beginnings. He started out just like most online entrepreneurs, with an idea and message to share, and no idea how to do it. He made several wrong turns, but he’s fond of saying that failure isn’t the end of the story—it’s a “plot twist”.Back in 2011, he started Firepole Marketing with less than nothing; he had no traffic, no subscribers, no relationships with any influencers in the industry, and over a quarter million dollars in personal debt, left over from his last failed startup.

In just a few short years, he transformed Firepole Marketing into Mirasee and grew the business to multiple-seven figures in revenue. Together with his business partner and talented wife, Bhoomi, he now leads a team of 80+ people spread all over the world, who are on a mission to support a very special global community of 100,000+ loyal and inspired entrepreneurs.

Danny has maintained a passionate commitment to learning and transparency, freely sharing lessons learned from great successes, major challenges, and even his personal life to support the online entrepreneurial community as a teacher, speaker, trainer, and advisor to many of the top leaders in our industry.

Abe Crystal is the CEO and co-founder of Ruzuku, an online course platform focused on student engagement. He’s also a strategic advisor to Mirasee.

Abe helps authors, coaches, speakers, and other independent experts create their own online courses and learning communities. He and his team at Ruzuku are on a mission to usher in a new wave of independent, authentic teachers around the world and invest them with the tools and support to succeed—everything the clients need to create, sell, and teach amazing courses.

Abe is also the author of The Business of Courses, about the process of adding online courses to your product and services offerings.

Abe is an adjunct professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He specializes in learning design and user experience research and earned his Ph.D. in human-computer interaction at UNC-Chapel Hill.
