On todays episode, Dr. Bob talks to us about his research (their newest findings discovered a potential treatment for primary-progressive MS)., what it means for people with Primary progressive MS, and things you can do NOW to set yourself up for even more benefit when future therapies arrive.

Bob Axtell is an Associate Member of the Arthritis & Clinical Immunology Research Program at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation

My bachelor's and master's degrees are from Idaho State University, and my Ph.D. is from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. I conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University for six years before opening my own lab at OMRF in 2013.

In my lab, we use animal models and patient samples from OMRF’s MS Center of Excellence to understand why MS behaves differently from other autoimmune diseases and why some MS patients do not respond well to standard therapy. By studying human disease specimens and animal models, we have great potential to identify new therapeutic targets and develop prognostic tests that will bring clinical care of multiple sclerosis into the forefront of personalized medicine.

Thanks so much for tuning in today! I wanted to share a story with you about a 1:1 client that I've been working with for just about one month. And two weeks into us working together, she started noticing really great benefits in her walking. But I wanted to share with you what those benefits are, what exercise routine she's doing to get those benefits, and also a surprising observation that at first glance appears to be a negative side effect of her exercise routine.

She talks to us about the study, what to expect, and how to participate! She also shares some of her best tips for starting a new diet and how long you should stay consistent for before trying something new!

Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials in the setting of Multiple Sclerosis. In 2018 she was awarded the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Linus Pauling Award for her contributions in research, clinical care and patient advocacy. Kathy Reagan Young is the founder of the FUMSnow.com site – whose mission is to provide information, inspiration, and motivation to help people with Multiple Sclerosis live their best lives. Diagnosed in 2008, Kathy found nothing uplifting about MS on the internet – only depressing, medically-dense sites. So – she built the site herself to show people that there was indeed life after diagnosis – and it could be a really good one!

Over the course of 10+ years, she added a podcast, merchandise, and an ebook in an effort to monetize the site when she had to leave her full time employment due to her MS. Once she added patient advocacy gigs to her portfolio, her online income surpassed her previous full time employment income. Upon that achievement, she knew she had to share her experience and resources – which is why she started the Patients Getting Paid membership community – to help people with chronic illness learn how to find and create flexible, remote work opportunities to better accommodate their health while generating an income. She added a podcast for PGP as well - all of which can be found at www.PatientsGettingPaid.com

Dr Michelle Ni Raghallaigh is an NHS-trained insomnia specialist and cognitive neuroscientist. Michelle helps individuals who are suffering with insomnia using the evidence-based approach Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI). This is the ‘gold standard’ treatment for insomnia which uses a range of strategies to improve sleep quality and is known to be extremely effective for individuals with a range of different physical (e.g. chronic pain and cancer) and mental health (e.g. anxiety and depression) conditions.

Using CBTI, Michelle will help you get refreshing sleep naturally, without having to rely on sleeping tablet prescriptions or over-the-counter medication.

The benefits of CBTI persist in the long-term, long beyond when the therapy finishes. It has been proven to help those with even very long-term (decades) poor sleep.

Michelle’s approach is always personally tailored to you individually and your own unique sleep difficulty and circumstances.

A former insomnia sufferer herself, Michelle has been a cognitive neuroscientist for 20 years (including a PhD from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and clinical research at UCL, London), trained in insomnia therapy at the Insomnia and Behavioural Sleep Medicine Clinic, UCLH and is a member of The British Sleep Society.

She runs a private practice and delivers insomnia therapy both online via Zoom to UK and international clients and in-person at her clinic space in Cambridge.

Michelle’s wish is to bring together her long-standing experience of critically evaluating scientific evidence, and her training in insomnia therapy, to provide a compassionate and evidence-driven way of helping those who are struggling with their sleep.

To discover the success stories of Michelle’s clients and their life-changing experience of overcoming insomnia, see here.

Distinguishing the difference between a true flare or relapse vs. a pseudo flare or relapse can be challenging at the best of times. Today, I sit down with Dr. Michael Kornberg to discuss what he, as a neurologist, looks out for in determining the difference between the two. We also discuss holistic approaches to treatment, medications, and the future of MS treatments. This episode is chock full of great insight!

Dr. Kornberg is Assistant Professor of Neurology and an Associate Director of the Neurology Residency Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a member of the Johns Hopkins Immunology and Cellular and Molecular Medicine graduate programs. Dr. Kornberg received MD and PhD degrees from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and he stayed at Johns Hopkins to complete residency training in neurology followed by a clinical and research fellowship in neuroimmunology. He specializes in the care of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune diseases of the nervous system. In addition to his clinical work, he runs a research program focused on better understanding the pathogenesis of MS and identifying novel therapeutic strategies to prevent neurodegeneration and promote remyelination in MS patients. Specifically, his lab studies the role of diet and metabolism in inflammation, as well the role of innate immune cells in determining the success or failure of repair processes in the brain.

Julie A. Stamm was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2007. Following her diagnosis, Julie

made it her mission to educate, advocate, and support others battling the disease. She works

tirelessly to help lessen the burden each patient has to bear. Her efforts have given her the

opportunity to work with physicians, patients, and foundations across the Globe.

After the birth of her son in 2016, Julie shifted her focus to supporting the children of parents with a

chronic illness. Her children’s book entitled “Some Days” was created to normalize differing

abilities and amplify how each of us can thrive in spite of the challenges. The movement she has

created has changed the apologetic tone and transformed the child and parent’s experiences into

uplifting stories that highlight the patient’s resilience.

In today’s episode, we talk about her book as well as the importance of de-stigmatizing chronic illness from a young age.

"After obtaining my Doctorate in Pharmacy degree from Ferris State University, I continued my training by completing a residency program at the Detroit Medical Center. I spent about 10 years in clinical practice doing medication therapy management. In speaking to patients with a chronic illness I was blown away by how little they knew about managing their disease through lifestyle. This led me to pursue a master’s in nutrition, which I started and then stopped, switching gears to get my MBA to align with my future goals!

But then, in 2015, it all came back around full circle when I was diagnosed with Hashimotos. My diagnosis took me right back to my passion to understand how I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. I realized I didn’t know who to trust and what was the right way to manage my disease, and so, I decided to become THE source! I embarked on a journey to further my education and obtain a Master’s in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from The University of Western States.

Through my journey in school, I started DrAutoimmuneGirl to share trusted information to those suffering like myself." - Dr. Donna Mazzola
