In this episode of "Disabled and Proud," Brooke talks with Scott Whitney in a thought-provoking discussion about the recent reforms to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and universal credit in the UK. He highlights the misconceptions surrounding disability benefits, particularly the unfounded belief in widespread fraud, and emphasises the importance of PIP as a means to maintain independence rather than merely an out-of-work benefit. The conversation delves into the challenges faced by disabled individuals in navigating the assessment process, the potential dangers of tightening benefit structures, and the urgent need for businesses to adapt their hiring practices to be more inclusive. Scott also shares insights from his own journey as a disabled person and discusses the initiatives of his organisation, All4Inclusion, which aims to reduce loneliness within the disability community by fostering safe spaces for open conversations. The episode concludes with a powerful reminder that being proud of one's disability should translate into action and advocacy for change.

Brooke talks to Pippa, a guest with ME, about her journey so far, including the challenges of managing symptoms like fatigue and chronic pain. She highlights the importance of trusting one's intuition and seeking answers when dealing with a chronic illness.
The conversation also delves into the impact of Pippa's diagnosis on her life, from being a dancer to transitioning to a writer. Pippa also touches on the unsolicited advice and bizarre questions she receives in public about her disability, emphasising the need for understanding and respect.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Despite challenges, Pippa expresses gratitude for her abilities and newfound ambition, driven by her chronic illness experience.
We often receive unsolicited advice and questions about our disabilities, emphasising the need for better understanding and respect.
Through blogging and writing a book, Pippa finds a platform to share her experiences and advocate for those with chronic illnesses.
There is a level of absurdity of ableism in society, which requires listening and understanding rather than offering unsolicited advice.
BEST MOMENTS
"I tailor my answer depending on who's asking a lot of the time, but in a nutshell I say I have a chronic illness called ME."
"I think the fact that people see a younger wheelchair user, and I'm also aware that I look a lot younger than I actually am, I think people have this desire to help but don't realise that their interpretation of helping just makes things so much worse."
"I'm more ambitious now, even though I have so much less usable energy per day, I feel as though I've got a stronger desire to do what I can and figure out what I can do with that level of ambition."
"I do think it's important not to do things purely for other people because I've fallen into that trap in the past but if you're able to do something that fulfils you on a personal level but It also provides support or entertainment or just something of substance for other people."

"Disability pride is about celebrating the work that's going on. So actually, I'm not celebrating Pride to the fullest, not because of my own fault, but because again, society isn't taking it on board."
"I think for me that is the pride because I think if I didn't get into this role, I probably wouldn't be sitting here today. Like I probably would have out alive myself a long time ago."
"It's not my accountability and responsibility. It's your burden of accountability and responsibility. And I think the natural tendency to applaud someone halfway through, you know they've done the bare minimum."

She reflects on the challenges of navigating the healthcare system and advocating for Dottie's needs. Emma discusses the importance of authentic representation of disability in media and the power of storytelling. She also touches on the struggles of self-care and the emotional toll of advocating for her daughter in various settings.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Advocating for a disabled child in medical settings can be emotionally challenging, but it is crucial to ensure the child's needs are met and their voice is heard. It involves being confident, determined, and prepared to stand up for what is best for the child.
Authentic representation of disability in media and storytelling is essential for empowering individuals and changing societal perceptions. It is important to tell untold stories and showcase the diversity within the disabled community.
Balancing self-care with the responsibilities of caring for a disabled child is crucial. Recognising when to take a break, setting boundaries, and surrounding oneself with supportive individuals are key aspects of self-care for a parent carer.
Questioning assumptions and biases about disability is important in advocating for a disabled child. It involves resisting harmful tropes, advocating for authentic representation, and challenging conflicting opinions from professionals.
BEST MOMENTS
"I think when she was first born. For the first sort of five months, we were in and out of hospital a lot. And it wasn't like we were told in that time, oh, she's disabled, or she has this condition, or it was sort of a really weird mix of what's happening, panic, sort of worry."
"I've definitely sort of evolved my thinking and perception of disability as a direct result of being Dottie's mum."
"I think it's about having those conversations that you wouldn't necessarily normally have with your friends down the pub. Because actually, they're not going to be the ones that necessarily grow your mindset."

ABOUT THE GUEST
Gavin Neate developed WelcoMe whilst working for Guide Dogs for the Blind as Mobility Instructor, in answer to the question, "Wouldn't it be easier if staff had access to disability awareness training immediately prior to a disabled person arriving?". In 2015 he left Guide Dogs and started his own technology company in order to come up with a solution. Although Gavin is currently non disabled he is acutely aware that one day he and others who who don't engage with disability issues will be, and is on a mission to engage them, and raise universal awareness of disability and the lives of disabled people.

Disability is definitely an individual thing, and each person must go through it and accept it in their own way

Accepting our disability is something we have to come to on our own. We should not simply feel as though we have to be happy and proud about our circumstances because society expects us to

"I definitely say to kind of or thinking about entering the corporate world to look for companies and organisations that really value inclusion and have kind of like processes in place to help people to help their staff with disabilities."
"I think it's definitely a journey, especially if you've had a disability all your life, but society and the way society is set up will make you feel like you shouldn't be proud of it."
"I understand the desperation of wanting like, oh, there must be something, you know. And I think a lot of those so-called doctors kind of pray on that desperation."

Brooke is joined by Dr. Hannah, a disabled and neurodivergent doctor, who shares her experiences with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and ADHD.
She discusses the challenges she faced in getting diagnosed with EDS and the lack of awareness and funding for the condition. Dr. Hannah also talks about her journey to getting diagnosed with ADHD and the impact it has had on her career in medicine. She highlights the need for greater inclusion and representation of disabled individuals in the medical field and society as a whole.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Dr. Hannah emphasises the importance of having a variety of acronyms to describe her disabilities, such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and ADHD. She proudly identifies as disabled and embraces the diversity of her disabilities.
The journey to diagnosis for EDS was challenging for Dr. Hannah, as the symptoms were often dismissed or attributed to being a woman. She was fortunate to receive a diagnosis while in medical school, but recognises the struggles that many others face in obtaining a diagnosis and accessing support.
Dr. Hannah faced initial challenges in navigating the medical field as a wheelchair user, but has found ways to adapt and excel in her profession.
Dr. Hannah encourages the integration of disability perspectives into broader conversations, rather than segregating disability as a separate topic. She believes that disabled individuals should be included in all discussions and have their experiences valued.

"It's very interesting when particularly around disability is that people think you owe them an explanation of your disability... But more often than not it is that that people just expect everything from you... It comes down to people just being really nosy and thinking that they're entitled to know all of these things."
"It's that reinforcement that we've had in society through media, through everything, through the way that we interact with disability. It starts literally when babies are in the womb... It's like, well, what if they're not healthy though? Are you going to change your mind about your baby when you discover that they're not healthy?"
"The amount that this government just let disabled people die because they didn't care about us is like... I literally had to just go, no, I'm done here. I'm fucking done here."
"It's just so much, so much of what we do is for, is supposed to fit into non-disabled life, that disabled narratives are missing so much... Disabled people think that they can tell them... I can always tell nine times out of ten when a non-disabled person has written a story about a disability."

They delve into the themes explored in Amanda's book, including the representation of disability in fairy tales and the importance of disabled joy.
Amanda reflects on the process of writing the book and how it transformed her as a person. She also offers advice to her younger self and emphasises the significance of self-love and finding one's own worth.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Embracing disability identity: Amanda discusses how she came to acknowledge and embrace her disability as a significant part of her identity, rather than trying to hide or downplay it.
The power of storytelling: Amanda explores the connection between disability and fairy tales in her book, "Disfigured." She highlights how fairy tales have historically portrayed disability and how these narratives have shaped societal perceptions of disabled individuals.
The importance of disabled joy: Amanda emphasises the need to make space for disabled joy and happiness. She discusses the tendency to focus solely on the challenges and hardships faced by disabled individuals, but also highlights the importance of celebrating and acknowledging the joy that can be found within the disability experience.
Writing "Disfigured" transformed Amanda's own perspective and self-acceptance. She shares how the process of writing the book allowed her to confront and overcome insecurities and negative beliefs about herself and her disability. Through this journey, she learned to love and accept herself fully.
BEST MOMENTS
"I say that I have cerebral palsy…the more that I learned about disability in my 30s, the more that I really began to just acknowledge that it was a huge part of my identity and really just embrace it."
"It's understanding where your place is, where you fit the most comfortably for you, and really trying to use that to your advantage and acknowledging that the journeys are going to be difficult for all of us."
"I love what you talk about in terms of before we had the social model of disability, we had the medical model of disability. And then before we had the medical model of disability, what did we have? And that's something that Disfigured goes on to say."
"I think what you've done with your book is really given a lot of different people, A, different perspectives, but also a real belonging, because so many people can relate to fairy tales…to be able to relate to them in a different way is so powerful."

Since experiencing a spinal injury as a rugby player he has dedicated his career to documenting adaptive training techniques for people with disabilities, and showcasing the benefits of strength and conditioning training for people of all body types.
Being in a chair has its boundaries but he doesn’t let this stop him; he has completed a climb up Mt Snowdon, the London Marathon 2019 and the first inclusive trail race with Original Mountain Marathon and Magic Outdoors at Cannock Chase.
As a wheelchair user and as an adventurer Chris feels he needs to push the boundaries and challenge the norm. Organising and participating in events has given Chris a mission: he wants to prove what can be done and let people know that they are the only person holding themselves back.

Blaine was born with the disability spina bifida, which has affected his leg muscles since he was a child. In the early stages of his life he struggled to come to terms with his disability but now he is a proud role model for other people living with disabilities.
For him, playing live as someone with a physical impairment is sometimes hard work, seeing as many modern facilities still do not have the means to cater for disabled people. Blaine is an advocate for venue accessibility and his band will only play in venues that have made an effort to cater for people with disabilities.

Mark speaks about how being disabled in the modern world means he doesn’t miss out on things and he excitedly shares that there is so much opportunity and assistance for disabled people to take part in activities and sports.
As you will hear in the show, there is now also a lot of representation in the media for disabled people with models, influencers, sports stars and TV personalities slowly but surely getting more of the right attention, and good job too!
However Mark keeps it real in this show and shares that despite all the increasing representation etc. there are still issues with classifications of disability while competing in sports.

This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by Ashley Eakin. Ashley is a director and writer in Hollywood who is at the forefront of disability representation. We speak about her short "Single" & "Forgive us our tresspasses", which are on Netflix. Forgive us our tresspasses is about Aktion T4 a regime that was implemented by Hitler in 1939 which saw the murder of 300,000 disabled people and the sterilization of a further 400,000. This secret program developed gas chamber technology used in concentration camps in WW2. She talks openly about being a disabled woman, how she has found it a struggle for the majority of her life and how her chronic condition is rare. In 2017, her video on SoulPancake "That Moment" went viral regarding her disability, and from there saw her work be guided towards disability representation. Finding a community for her was so vital and how having this community and showing up for them has become a large factor in her life. She talks about the process of writting and shooting forgive us our tresspasses and how the story came about, the shooting of it . This conversation is so powerful when talking of representation and how seeing the physical representation is so important.

This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by Ant Andrews. Ant is incredibly open regarding his disability. He no longer has a large intestine, which means he wears a stomach bag. I had so many questions regarding his disability and his stomach and he answered each one with such grace. He is potentially the first guest who also asked me questions regarding my disability. I loved having Ant on the show. He is really open about how this can be quite an embarrassing disability, but he wants to help fight the stigma that can come with an invisible disability.

This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by Jessica Ping-Wild. Jessica Ping-Wild is a model, actor, dancer, singer, creator, influencer, writer, and blogger. In June 2020, she founded The Rolling Explorer, a blog dedicated to sharing her experiences as a disabled young woman living in the 21st century. Jessica is very well versed in disability and how it can affect life. She has CHILDs syndrome, an incredibly rare condition, which roughly 60 people worldwide have. CHILDs is a genetic syndrome that causes issues with skin and limb differences on one side of the body. Jessica contrasts how disability is viewed in America versus England and the differences she has noticed. We also speak about her IG series "accessibiliTEA" on how accessible some venues are or are not as well as her take on Tik Tok dances. This is a great conversation about the reality of disability.

This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by James Sutliff, a Certified Disability Specialist Coach and Personal Trainer at James Sutliff Personal Trainer & Disability Specialist Coach. James has dystonia, which affects his speech and his hands. This episode was POWERFUL. It wasn't until he pushed harder for answers that he got referred to specialists and found out his dystonia was caused by continuous concussion & head bangs whilst playing rugby over the years. Not having a diagnosis quite literally ruined him - he had no money, no job, no savings until he got his diagnosis. He talks about how much he loves his job working with disabled people and training them, and how being disabled has made him into the person that he is.

This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by Nina Healthily. Nina has hEDs, a genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue in her body. hEDs is chronically under-researched and rare, it is also invisible. Nina talks openly about how she learnt to accept her disability, how she is also chronically unwell, and how this affects her life. We talk about the pandemic and its impact on accessibility. Disability is not a one size fits all, Nina points out. Only 8% of disabled people in the UK use a wheelchair and therefore are not represented by the traditional symbol of disability. Nina is wonderfully eloquent on disability and I think that this conversation will enlighten anyone in the disabled sphere.

This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by Tyler Saunders. Tyler was born without his leg. He speaks about how in his early 20s he had a lightbulb moment when he realised that he no longer wanted to wear his prosthetic. For him, his prosthetic was never quite what he wanted as it was uncomfortable and he only really wore it so that he didn't stand out. When Tyler left uni he found wheelchair basketball and that is when he was pickled into the fitness world. From training in Germany for 3 years he knew that his life was to be in fitness. He talks about his time on "Ninja Warrior UK" being a Dad with a disability and how his training revolves around life goals and not aesthetics. We also take a trip down memory lane thinking about our times as children waiting to get prosthetics! Tyler is clearly someone who works on breaking his own limiting beliefs. He plays a very important role in the NFG (National Fitness Games) Adaptive games, believing that showing up as a disabled body in fitness is integral for representation. Disabled & Proud does exactly what is says on the tin! And whilst we are creating this space for disabled people to be unashamedly themselves, without need to conform for society, this is also not about toxic positivity. This show will be shining a big, bright light on disability without it being “Paralympic or pity”.
As you will hear disability is WHOLE, COMPLETE & PERFECT and whilst the topic of disability can be quite heavy - and we definitely don't shy away from the bad days - this podcast is also about having fun too! Our aim is to play a part in reclaiming the word disability - turning it from inadequacy to perfection!
