Are you tired of saying yes when you really want to say no? In this powerful conversation, I sit down with leadership coach Robynne Weaver to explore the hidden costs of people pleasing—and why so many women, especially in midlife, struggle with it.

Robynne shares her own journey from the high-pressure events industry to coaching, where she now helps women recognize when people pleasing, perfectionism, and codependency are leading to burnout, resentment, and self-abandonment. Together, we unpack why women are socially conditioned to put everyone else’s needs first, how “being nice” is different from true kindness, and why discomfort is the currency of growth.

You’ll learn:

  • What people pleasing really is (and what it’s not).
  • The surprising role control plays in the cycle.
  • Why women in leadership roles set the tone for healthy boundaries at work.
  • Simple, practical tools to stop overcommitting—like Robynne’s rule of “no immediate yeses.”
  • How to shift from rescuing and overdoing into authentic, assertive communication.

If you’ve ever felt resentful after saying yes, worried about upsetting others, or stuck in the “good girl” role, this episode will give you the awareness and tools to start breaking free from the habit of people pleasing so you can reclaim your confidence, energy, and joy.

I’m so excited to share a personal update with you in this episode. Over the last seven months, I’ve been in what I call “the goo” — that messy middle stage of transformation where everything feels unclear and you start questioning everything. After running Raising Happy Teens for three years and then rebranding to Subtle Shifts, I’ve been experimenting, pivoting, and figuring out what feels most aligned for me and the women I serve.

In this short but powerful episode, I open up about the breakthrough I recently had while working with my friend and coach, Lisette King, and how it’s completely clarified the direction of this podcast. I share:

✨ What “the goo” really looks like in life and business
✨ The mindset shifts I had to make to break through resistance
✨ My own midlife weight loss journey — how I lost 15 pounds, kept it off, and finally feel at home in my body again
✨ Why I’m passionate about helping women in perimenopause and menopause feel strong, healthy, and confident in their own skin

This episode is the start of a new chapter for the Subtle Shifts podcast. Going forward, you can expect conversations about midlife health, weight loss, strength, mindset, and how to feel like yourself again — inside and out.

In this episode, I sit down with Alyssa Zander, a codependency and relationship coach and host of the Codependency Alchemy podcast, for an honest and empowering conversation about breaking free from codependency.

Alyssa shares how codependency showed up in her relationships, family dynamics, and even her business, and how she began healing through shadow work, inner child practices, and redefining self-worth from within. Together, we explore the deeper meaning of codependency, the connection to perfectionism and hyper-independence, and how generational patterns, like the mother wound, shape our beliefs about value, love, and belonging.

You’ll hear us talk about:

  • A clear, practical definition of codependency and how it shows up in everyday life.
  • Why independence can actually be a hidden sign of codependency.
  • The role of shadow work and inner child healing in breaking cycles.
  • How to recognize the influence of the mother wound without placing blame.
  • Why healing isn’t about being “fixed” but about compassion and integration.

If you’ve ever struggled with people-pleasing, over-functioning, or tying your worth to relationships, success, or external validation, this conversation will give you fresh insight and hope.

What if one simple exercise could help you reconnect with yourself, clarify what matters most, and make empowered shifts in every area of your life?

In today’s solo episode, I’m sharing one of my favorite tools from my coaching practice: the Wheel of Life. It’s a powerful yet approachable way to reflect on where you are right now, notice what’s working (and what’s not), and uncover what’s ready to shift—without judgment or overwhelm.

After coaching hundreds of clients through life transitions—parenting teens, navigating career pivots, rediscovering purpose, healing burnout—this is the tool I return to again and again. Not just because it’s insightful, but because it works. It helps people see the whole picture and realize how one area of life is often deeply connected to another.

💫 In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What the Wheel of Life is and how to use it
  • How to spot which areas of life are draining you and which are energizing you
  • Why improving just one slice of life often leads to big, beautiful shifts in others
  • The patterns I’ve seen over and over again in my work with clients
  • How to set goals that actually feel aligned, doable, and joyful

Whether you’re craving more balance, clarity, or momentum, this practice offers a grounded starting point—and an invitation to evolve with intention.

🌀 You’ll leave this episode with:

  • A practical tool you can use again and again as you grow
  • A fresh perspective on what’s possible
  • A reminder that you don’t have to figure it all out alone

In this episode, I sit down with Emotional Ninja and subconscious reprogramming expert Lisset King to dive deep into the real reason we stay stuck—even when we’re doing all the right things.

As someone who has done a personal breakthrough session with Lisset, I can tell you—this work is next level. We go beyond surface mindset shifts and into the realm of deep subconscious transformation. If you've ever found yourself repeating the same toxic relationship patterns, sabotaging your success, or struggling to maintain the abundance you’ve worked hard to create, this conversation will open your eyes to what’s really going on.

You’ll learn:

  • The difference between your conscious and subconscious mind (and why the subconscious is running the show)
  • How our earliest memories and beliefs shape our adult reality
  • Why we keep recreating the same problems (even when we "know better")
  • What it actually means to release emotional baggage—and how it feels
  • The four requisites of change—and why skipping step one (release) keeps you stuck
  • How energy work supports transformation at the cellular level
  • How to rewire limiting beliefs like “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t belong,” or “Money isn’t safe”

Lisset shares powerful analogies—like the ant and the elephant—to explain how your subconscious patterns are steering your life, even when your conscious mind has a totally different plan.

If you’re a perfectionist, high achiever, or personal development junkie who’s tired of doing all the things and still feeling stuck… this episode is your wake-up call.

🎧 Tune in now to hear my own personal breakthroughs, learn what subconscious baggage might be holding you back, and discover what’s possible when you finally release what no longer serves you.

Are you on a journey of personal growth but keep bumping up against the same emotional triggers or patterns? Ever wonder why certain people or situations push your buttons—or why you sometimes feel disconnected from your true self?

This week, I’m thrilled to welcome Dr. Mike Simmons (aka "Shadow Mike") to the podcast. Mike is a shadow work coach and soul initiator who helps people explore the hidden parts of themselves they’ve been taught to ignore or suppress. Together, we dive deep into the world of shadow work—an often misunderstood yet profoundly transformative path rooted in Jungian psychology.

Mike opens the conversation with a beautiful poem that reframes what it means to do shadow work. Rather than something dark or negative, the “shadow” is presented as the unlived self—the parts of us that hold incredible wisdom, creativity, and power.

We talk about how shadow work can:

  • Reduce emotional triggers and “psychic inflammation”
  • Reveal what our projections say about ourselves (and how to use them for growth)
  • Positively impact our relationships—especially as parents
  • Help us reconnect with our purpose and live more authentically

I also share real-life stories, including experiences from my own clients, that show how shadow work isn’t about fixing yourself—it’s about integrating your wholeness.

Whether you’re a parent wanting to break generational cycles, someone exploring spiritual and emotional healing, or simply curious about your deeper purpose, this conversation will give you a fresh perspective on what’s possible when you meet your shadow with compassion.

More about Shadow Mike:

Dr. Michael Simmons (aka Shadow Mike) is an expert shadow work coach and soul initiator. He specializes in finding the psycho-spiritual root ailing you, then guiding you to your own abundant medicine, power, and agency to embody your unlived soulful life.

It's one thing to accept your queer teen, and quite another to be a true ally. Queer teens need to know that you not only support them but that you will actively advocate for them. But it's not easy to know how if you don't have experience with this.

This is why I invited Jennifer Boudrye, a queer allyship facilitator, to the podcast to discuss the importance of allyship in supporting LGBTQ+ youth. Jennifer emphasizes the need for compassion, awareness, respect, and empathy (C.A.R.E) in navigating the complexities of queer identities and offers practical advice to parents of queer children.

Topics discussed include:

  • How parents can effectively support their queer children
  • The significance of setting boundaries with family members
  • Resources available for both parents and teens.
  • Common mistakes parents make and the importance of community support.

We are the first generation of parents raising kids in the age of smartphones. As such, there is very little guidance around finding a healthy balance of screen time and non screen time activities.

At the same time, we’re seeing a concerning rise in mental health issues in our teenagers. Coincidence? Research is saying no.

In this episode, I discuss the connection between increased anxiety in teens and the rise of smartphones using the book “The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt.

Key Points Discussed:

  • The correlation between the introduction of smartphones and a rise in teen anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide.
  • Play-based childhood (active, social interaction) being replaced by phone-based childhoods (disembodied, asynchronous communication).
  • How Phones hinder the development of social and emotional skills.
  • The opportunity cost of a phone-based childhood (social deprivation, sleep deprivation, attention fragmentation).
  • Jonathan Haidt's proposed solution: "Building a ladder from childhood to adulthood" - a gradual introduction of responsibilities and independence.

This is the first of two episodes on the topic, so stay tuned for Part 2!

What will they think?

What if it's a mistake?

So often, as parents, our dissatisfaction with our own life negatively impacts our ability to effectively parent our teen. When we feel happy in our own life, it not only makes us better parents but also better people. One of the most effective tools I’ve found in improving my quality of life is manifestation.

Manifestation is often perceived as mystical or far-fetched, but it's actually a practical process of setting clear goals and aligning your thoughts and actions with those goals. In this episode, I’ll dive into the concept of manifestation, breaking down its components and sharing personal experiences to illustrate its effectiveness.

Topics in this episode include:

  • My personal experience incorporating manifestation practices into my life and the results I have created along the way
  • Practical techniques such as goal setting using the five "F's," visualization, and affirmations
  • The importance of taking inspired action and staying open to possibilities
  • Simple steps you can take now to start manifesting positive change in your life

You know how a total stranger can rub you the wrong way? You can feel put off by them, even if there's no obvious reason for it.

Fun fact: In the early days of my Yoga Teacher Training, we had to do this really uncomfortable exercise in which all 25 of us walked around a room without talking.

After about a minute, we put our hand on the shoulder of someone who "rubbed us the wrong way" — someone we were triggered by, for some reason. Then we did the same thing with someone we felt comfortable around.

(I repeat: This was uncomfortable! Who wants people to know what you think of them, especially if it's negative?)

But the reflection was: "What is it in each of these people that I see in myself?"

Because in reality, everyone is a mirror to you. Everything you can see in other people, you can see in yourself. And if something you see triggers you in a negative way, it's something you (probably subconsciously) don't like about yourself.

This episode is about shining a light on those subconscious thoughts, so you don't have to be at their whim anymore — and so you can stop being triggered by your teen.

Here's what's inside:

  • How subconscious thoughts work and influence your parenting
  • Steps to bring awareness to these hidden patterns
  • Ways to improve the interactions you have with your teens

Today's guest, Psychotherapist and Coach TJ Matton, is sharing what play really is, and why everyone - adults included - needs it!

She defines "play" to clarify that it's not just one kind of behavior, but a state of being in the body.

And it's a primal drive, just like hunger, thirst, and sleep. While we can't avoid this drive in our bodies, culturally, we really suppress play - which is why people need help re-engaging it.

Listen to find out:

  • What the play state has to do with learning, safety, and fear
  • What happens in the nervous system during the play state
  • How parents can best help their teens engage in the play state (without accidentally pushing them into the fight/flight state)
  • Why ask "When's the last time you felt free" and what to do with your answer
  • What life-changing benefits you'll get when you have more play in your life!

In this episode, we delve into the impact of having a narcissist in your life, how to navigate co-parenting with a narcissist, and how to support your teen when they've developed a relationship with a narcissist.

Laura explains the two things that make a narcissist a narcissist:

  1. They use harmful tools to get their needs met
  2. They lack the ability to have self-awareness or empathy for the person in front of them

This naturally presents a challenge for people in any kind of relationship with narcissists. They feel emotionally attacked — they're sent into fight/flight mode — they're trying to survive and get their needs met.

This means they're more likely to people-please the narcissist, just to make things calm and peaceful again. Over time, they can end up in a whole quagmire of terrible feelings and confusion.

In this episode:

  • What to do to support your teenager when you know their other parent's narcissism is impacting them
  • A good approach to parenting if you're still married to and/or living with a narcissistic partner
  • The best responses to seeing your teen develop a relationship with a narcissist (and what not to do)

If you have a teenager struggling with confidence (and honestly, I don't know any teenagers who don't), this episode will help!

If your Middle Schooler is struggling to find friends, is being isolated from the friends they have, or is in the middle of a friendship transition, this episode is for you.

So many of my clients struggle with friendships: Keeping them, finding them, finding the right ones. If your teen doesn't have close friends — if they don't feel like they have a group they belong to — it can be really isolating, and their self-esteem can take a hit.

In this episode, we explore exactly why Middle School is such a challenging time for friendships, including important data from multiple studies.

And I offer 7 Solutions for you to help your teen respond to those challenges and make friends.

So why is Middle School present such challenges for making or keeping friends?

  • Bodies, brains and social skills are all changing, and all at different rates. It can be really challenging for teens to find someone at their similar level.
  • 25% of 5th-8th Graders consider popularity to be more important than friendships, which can really tear friendships apart.
  • Confidence is at a low point in adolescence, with girls' confidence dipping by as much as 30% between ages 8-14.
  • Big emotions at this age, combined with a still-developing prefrontal cortex, can result in some irrational and impulsive behavior — which can affect your teen's ability to make or keep friends.

What can you do to help your teen make friends?

  1. Help them build social skills (show an interest in others, active listening, being kind)
  2. Direct their focus away from themselves and onto others to lower stress and increase their ability to interact and connect
  3. Encourage them to pursue their hobbies and interests, which can help them meet like-minded people
  4. Help them look outside their immediate social circle — to strike up conversations with new people or get to know their friends' friends
  5. Suggest they text or DM people on weekends, to start bridging the gap between being "school friends" and outside-of-school friends
  6. Talk to a Guidance Counselor, who has a pulse on the student population and can help make connections
  7. Reach out to me! Helping Middle Schoolers feel more confident is one of my specialties, and I have a new program designed specifically to help this age group.

I'm sharing 9 science-backed ways for parents and teens to manage stress and anxiety, that just take a little bit of commitment and knowledge to take effect.

In this episode, we get into:

  • How to breathe effectively for stress management (I walk you through a round of the Square Breathing technique at the 2:00 mark)
  • My recommendation to make mindfulness meditation more doable, so it's easier to use that skill to lower stress in your daily experiences
  • How physical movement helped one of my teenage clients manage the stress of adjusting to college life
  • What studies show happens when you reframe "anxiety as excitement" vs. tell yourself to "stay calm" when you're stressed
  • An important fact about how teens experience stressful situations after they don't get enough sleep
  • An intro to Relaxation Exercises (specific techniques for managing stress, like the Progressive Relaxation Exercise and Yoga Nidra)
  • What other people in your life have to do with your ability to manage stress
  • How to utilize the "controllables" to manage stress, especially when it's coming out of fear of the unknown (I describe an activity I do with clients to help with this, called the Circle of Control)
  • The impact optimism has on your biological response to stress (bonus: You don't even have to be "positive all the time" to manage stress better! But I give you specific ideas on how to build optimism overall, so you're better equipped to handle and lower stress.)

If you choose one option from this list (I recommend picking the one that feels easy and doable) and you commit to integrating it into your life for at least a month, you'll be able to see how it impacts your level of stress!

This week, I share some opinions on parenting that may not be widely accepted or understood — which I'm ok with.

I've been a parent for a while now. I've gone through the wringer with experiences with my kids, and it's really impacted the way I see parenting and what it takes to raise a human being.

And I'm sharing these potentially controversial thoughts to give you the freedom to do things differently, or outside the norm.

Because there isn't just "one way" to do parenting, that's going to work for everyone.

So it's okay for you to disagree with things I say here: the most important question for you to ask is "What's best for me and my teen?"

As you keep checking in with your value system, you'll keep figuring out what's right for you.

The college application process can feel so overwhelming — to teens and their parents.

But that doesn't have to be a given.

My guest today, Stacy Boodman, offers strategies and processes to simplify this experience, so it doesn't disrupt your whole life and stress everybody out!

She helps teens navigate the college applications and all of the decisions involved in it.

Here's what's inside this episode:

  • The Step-by-Step Process she uses to start and navigate the College App Conversation (sneak peek: this starts with the Application Persona — essentially, a mission statement for their applications: What gets them excited, what they're interested in, what they want)
  • Why starting with the person rather than the "shoulds" and "checkboxes" of college applications makes everything easier
  • How this process works even if you have no idea what you want to do (and how not to expect perfection from yourself)

Stacy Boodman helps college-bound students find their own passion in the planning and execution of their next big step. After helping her own daughter Emily with her college applications, She developed an easy, step-by-step, detailed program that makes the complicated college application process easy and enjoyable.

We're getting a little vulnerable and personal today, as I talk about something I'm experiencing, which I find isn't really openly discussed in the parental space: Parental Grief.

Walking alongside your kid, as they transition from a baby all the way to an adult, is like a slow Letting Go.

They find more independence and rely on you less and less — and even though that's what you want for them, it can take a toll.

In this episode we explore:

  • The reality of parental grief as your child moves through different stages
  • Why it's normal to find yourself feeling lost when your teen is suddenly driving or off to college
  • 6 strategies to navigate and come to terms with your changing role of "Nurturer"

If you're anything like our clients, fear is a constant.

Fear that you're going to mess up, that your kid will feel something uncomfortable, that other kids will have advantages and yours will be left behind.

And while that fear is normal, you can create more challenges if your reaction to it is Social Engineering.

This week, I'm joined by Life and Parent Coach Darlynn Childress to talk all about this behavior, and ultimately what you can do bulldoze less and trust yourself more.

"Social Engineering" is purposefully orchestrating your child's environment and experiences. (Basically, not just putting up the bumpers on your kid's life, but figuring out who'll be at the bowling alley, what they're going to be wearing, which lane they'll be in...)

Bumpers on their own can be helpful — but the increased intensity of Social Engineering results in: "We're not even gonna let our kids bowl unless we know the entire experience is going to work for them."

So how do you avoid bulldozing the path you think your kid should or needs to follow (and still feel good about your parenting)?

In this episode we explore:

  • Parenting pressure to "do everything right"
  • Why bulldozing even a pristine, perfect path can't guarantee anything for your child
  • Strategies to use if you notice you want to orchestrate everything
  • The antidote to fear
  • How to trust yourself and define your self-worth

Darlynn Childress is the host of the Become A Calm Mama podcast and founder of the Calm Mama Club. A life and parent coach since 2012, Darlynn spends her days helping moms while raising her teenagers and hanging out with Mr. Childress and their dogs. When she’s not coaching, you can find her reading a book, hiking a hill, lounging on the beach, or binge-watching Netflix.

I always assume positive intent, from both parents and teenagers, but sometimes we need reminders to call out unhelpful behaviors we're not even aware of.

That's what this episode is all about. It'll help you recognize what you might be doing to unintentionally create a divide in your relationship with your teenager — and what to do instead.

In Untangled by Lisa Damour, a book I recommend to everyone, the teen years are likened to the experience of learning to swim (and I just love a good analogy). Your teen is figuring out how to swim on their own, and you're the wall of the pool: You don't move, and they know they can always come back to you as they naturally swim away on their own, more and more.

Teenagers get a bad rap for being unreliable, rebellious, and self-centered. But in my experience, none of this is true.

In fact, when teenagers are acting this way, it's typically because they struggle with trust - both in themselves and those closest to them.

The good news? You, as their parent, are your teen's primary example of what a relationship looks like. Which means you can establish a trusting relationship with your teen by implementing some simple strategies!

In this episode, I'm giving you 7 ways to help you create a mutually trusting and respectful relationship with your teenager.

You'll learn:

  • My tips for active listening
  • How to set boundaries collaboratively with your teen
  • Why understanding behavior isn't the same as indulging inappropriate behavior
  • What actions you can take to show your teen you value who they are and your relationship with them

And more!

If feel like your relationship with your teen lacks mutual trust, or you want to prevent losing trust with your teen as they get older, this episode is for you!

In this episode, I discuss the importance of letting go of expectations as a parent. When we have expectations of who our children should be and what they should accomplish, we set ourselves up for disappointment and frustration. More importantly, we put pressure on our children to live up to our expectations, which can damage our relationship with them.

Instead, it's important to focus on supporting your teenager and helping them to become the best versions of themself. This means allowing them to explore their own interests, make their own mistakes, and find their own way in the world.

I'll discuss some of the common expectations that parents have of their teenagers, and why it's important to let go of them. I'll also provide tips for how to support your teenager and build a strong relationship with them.

Listen to the podcast episode to learn more about:

  • Why expectations are harmful to the parent-child relationship
  • Common expectations that parents have of their teenagers
  • Tips for letting go of expectations and supporting your teen
  • How to build a strong relationship with your teen
