Rachel, who was also homeschooled, shares the benefits of including art during the early years of homeschooling. “We want to make sure [our kids] know that 2 + 2 = 4, but we forget that creativity is a part of who we are,” explains Rachel. She then gives practical tips, adding, “We all have creativity in some form or fashion. As a parent, find what sparks creativity in your child.” Rachel then explains that creativity comes in many forms that may spark creativity in your child, suggesting that “maybe it’s cooking. Then create something in the kitchen together with your child.”

In this episode of the Military Homeschool Moms Podcast, Crystal walks you through how to homeschool through a PCS move without losing your sanity—or your confidence. Whether you’re mid-move, traveling between duty stations, or just settling into a new community, this episode is packed with practical tips and gentle encouragement to help you keep going.
PCSing & Homeschooling — How to Stay Legal and SanePCS season can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re homeschooling on top of everything else. Boxes everywhere, routines disrupted, emotions running high, and that nagging question in the back of your mind: “Am I doing enough?”
You’ll hear realistic advice on how to scale back school during a move while still keeping learning meaningful. Crystal shares how to use a “light school” approach—focusing on reading, simple math, journaling, and family conversations—so your kids continue learning even when life feels unsettled.
Travel becomes a classroom, too. From road-trip geography and audiobooks to national parks, monuments, and military history along the way, this episode helps you see how real-life experiences absolutely count as school. You’ll also get ideas for helping your children process the move through travel journals, narration, and simple discussions that build both academic and emotional skills.
Once you arrive at your new duty station, Crystal encourages turning “getting settled” into intentional learning. Exploring your new community—libraries, parks, local history, state symbols, and events—not only checks academic boxes but helps your kids feel rooted and confident more quickly.
Of course, no PCS conversation would be complete without addressing homeschool laws and record keeping. This episode breaks it down simply, reminding moms that consistency matters more than perfection. You’ll learn what records to keep, how to stay compliant when moving between states, and why digital record keeping can be a lifesaver for military families.
Most importantly, this episode offers reassurance for weary moms. Homeschooling during a PCS will never look picture-perfect—and that’s okay. Your children are learning resilience, flexibility, and trust through every move.
If you’re navigating a PCS while homeschooling, this episode will remind you that you’re not behind—you’re doing exactly what this season requires.
You’re not just surviving a move. You’re teaching life.

Episode #27 – As parents, we love giving our children gifts and seeing their eyes sparkle with delight. But we do our kids a disservice when we fail to teach them the blessing of having a grateful heart. On today’s show, Crystal talks about ways to encourage a grateful heart in your children, not just during the holidays but all year long.
Giving and receiving gifts is a wonderful blessing; however, the Christmas season tends to over-encourage a “gimme” attitude in children, which can lead to a feeling of entitlement rather than gratitude. Teaching your kids to have an attitude of gratitude has many benefits. An article published by The ImagineProject.org lists the following benefits of gratitude: “Greater sense of well-being; improved physical health; improved self-esteem, resilience, and empathy; decreased aggression; increased optimism; improved sleep.”
When we revisit negative thoughts over and over again, we are literally deepening those connective pathways in our brains, making us more prone to think negative thoughts. The same goes for positive, thankful thoughts. We have to be mindful of where we let our minds go; we’re choosing our future thought patterns. This is why it truly is a gift you give your children when you teach them to be thankful and model gratitude in your own life. Material things come and go, but a grateful attitude is a blessing to everyone.
Ways to Teach Gratitude to Children
Gratitude is a valuable life skill that has many amazing benefits. It can help children to develop strong relationships, cope with adversity, and feel happier overall. Make sure to model thankfulness in your own life and encourage gratitude in your children. Not just during the holiday season but all year long!

Gratitude in Boots: Teaching Thankfulness in Military Life & HomeschoolingMilitary life can sometimes feel like a never-ending juggling act—new orders, constant change, and goodbyes just when you’ve finally unpacked the last box. But even in the middle of all that, gratitude can be the steady heartbeat that keeps us grounded. In this episode of the Military Homeschool Moms Podcast, Crystal shares how to cultivate gratitude in your home—both as a military spouse and as a homeschool mom.
Why Gratitude MattersGratitude doesn’t mean pretending life is easy—it means noticing what’s still good even when things get hard. For military families, gratitude anchors us in what doesn’t change: our faith, family, love, and purpose. It strengthens resilience and helps both moms and kids reframe challenges with perspective instead of frustration. Crystal shares personal insights, including how keeping a simple gratitude journal helps her focus on God’s control instead of life’s chaos.
The Deployment Dinner BellYou’ll love the touching story of a military mom who created a “Deployment Dinner Bell” tradition with her kids. Every evening, before dinner, they rang a tiny bell and shared one thing they were thankful for. It became a sweet way to replace loneliness with connection—and the bell still rings in their home years later as a reminder that gratitude isn’t just for hard seasons; it’s for every season.
Practical Ways to Teach GratitudeCrystal offers age-appropriate ideas for weaving thankfulness into homeschooling:
Faith & PerspectiveDrawing from Scripture and quotes from Joni Eareckson Tada and Max Lucado, Crystal reminds listeners that gratitude isn’t denial—it’s perspective. Giving thanks in all circumstances keeps our eyes on the Good Giver, even when life gets messy.
Final EncouragementGratitude turns ordinary days into moments of worship and connection. Tiny steps—like naming two things you’re thankful for or inviting a neighbor to dinner—can transform your outlook and your homeschool atmosphere.

Homeschooling High School: A Mission Worth Taking for Military Families
Homeschooling high school can sound intimidating—especially for military families who already juggle deployments, PCS moves, and ever-changing routines. But in this encouraging episode of the Military Homeschool Moms Podcast, host Crystal Niehoff shares how homeschooling high school can actually be one of the most rewarding and freeing decisions for military parents and their teens.
Crystal explains how the flexibility of homeschooling fits perfectly with the unpredictable rhythm of military life. From overseas assignments to homecomings, homeschooling allows families to maintain consistency, no matter where duty calls. Teens can take their education anywhere, adjust schedules around deployments, and even turn travel experiences into hands-on learning opportunities.
Listeners will also hear how homeschooling provides academic freedom and personalized learning, letting parents shape education around their teen’s strengths, interests, and faith. Crystal discusses how homeschoolers thrive in college and the workforce thanks to their adaptability, independence, and critical thinking skills—qualities that come naturally to military kids!
Crystal then shares about Venus and Serena Williams, two world-renowned athletes who were homeschooled throughout their high school years. Their parents chose homeschooling so the girls could focus on both academics and tennis training while maintaining strong family values. That decision not only gave them flexibility but also helped shape their discipline, confidence, and focus—qualities that made them champions both on and off the court.
Listeners will come away reminded that homeschooling high school isn’t just about academics—it’s about building character, faith, and family bonds that will last a lifetime.

Homeschool on the Move: PCS-Friendly Strategies for Military FamiliesIf there’s one thing military families know well, it’s how to adapt. From unexpected orders to cross-country moves, change is part of our normal. But what happens to homeschooling when the moving trucks arrive and life is packed into boxes? In this episode of the Military Homeschool Moms Podcast, Crystal Niehoff shares strategies and encouragement to help you make homeschooling truly portable during a PCS or while traveling.
You’ll discover that homeschooling doesn’t have to be tied to a desk or rigid schedule. In fact, with a little flexibility, learning can happen anywhere—on the road, in a hotel room, or while waiting for housing. Crystal walks through how to build a simple “PCS Survival Kit” of school supplies to keep on hand, and how to take advantage of digital tools that lighten your load.
In this episode, Crystal covers: Digital Curriculum & Tools – Online platforms like Schoolhouseteachers.com and Khan Academy make it easy to keep lessons going anywhere. Pair them with free audiobooks from LibriVox or paid options like Audible. * Bible & Devotions on the Go – Apps like the YouVersion Bible App keep family devotions accessible wherever you are. * Supplies Made Simple – A backpack with notebooks, pencils, clipboards, and a small whiteboard can cover most subjects without weighing you down. * Making Travel Educational – Turn your PCS trip into “roadschooling” by studying the states you pass through, visiting museums, or keeping travel journals. Even budgeting gas and food money becomes a math lesson! * Settling into a New Duty Station* – First stop? The local library. It’s a treasure trove of free books, internet access, and often homeschool-friendly programs. Explore parks, zoos, or botanical gardens for hands-on science, and connect with local homeschoolers through military spouse groups or state associations.
Most importantly, Crystal reminds moms that taking a break during a PCS is perfectly okay. Homeschooling is flexible, and your kids are learning life skills, resilience, and adaptability every step of the way.
Tune in and be encouraged: homeschooling truly can go wherever the military sends you!

There is no possible way to know everything you will ever teach your children prior to actually teaching them. You are not a human encyclopedia. Even the best teachers don’t know everything. We all have experiences that master different skills. Like, you may be a whiz at math yet have a child who struggles in that area but is totally into literature or science. What a wonderful thing to have a family that is multi-passionate. One that pursues knowledge in a multitude of subjects. But what a challenge, too.
On this episode, let’s talk about what to do when that happens and how to teach what you do not know.

What do military homeschool kids really miss out on? Crystal Niehoff shares the funny, freeing truth about why “missing out” is the best thing ever. Show NotesEpisode Title:
No Bus, No Bullies, No Problem: What Military Homeschool Kids “Miss Out” On
No Bus, No Bullies, No Problem: What Military Homeschool Kids “Miss Out” On Episode Summary:Ever been asked, “Aren’t you worried about what your homeschooled kids are missing out on?” Oh, friend… grab your coffee and let’s talk about it—Military Homeschool style.
In this lighthearted episode of the Military Homeschool Moms Podcast, Crystal Niehoff takes a tongue-in-cheek look at all the “tragic” experiences our kids never have to endure. From early morning bus stops to cafeteria cliques, overpriced sneakers to bubble-test panic, homeschoolers are blissfully deprived of some of the most “character-building” moments traditional school has to offer.
And as military families, our homeschoolers have their own unique list of “missed” milestones—like being the new kid every other year, missing school for a PCS, or navigating deployment season while juggling homework. Spoiler alert: missing out might just be the best thing that ever happened to them.
We’ll laugh, nod in agreement, and maybe roll our eyes at what society thinks is “essential” for childhood. Next time someone asks if you’re worried about what your kids are missing, you’ll have the perfect answer… with maybe a little sass.
In This Episode You’ll Hear: The “school experiences” our homeschooled military kids will never face * Why missing certain traditions is actually a blessing * How homeschooling gives military kids stability in a life full of change * A famous former homeschooler who is grateful he “missed out” * A funny, encouraging reminder that different is often better*
Question for You:What’s one thing your homeschooler is “missing out on” that secretly makes you cheer inside? Early bus stops? Cafeteria food fights? Middle school fashion police?
Share your answer on our Facebook page @MilitaryHomeschoolPodcast — let’s build a list together and celebrate the freedom to homeschool differently!

Episode #33 – On this episode, guest Wendy Baird Packard talks about how military homeschooled teens can start now being intentional about activities that build skills for their future career plans.
Special Thanks to Our Network Sponsor – Judson College Judson College offers biblical and practical training wherever a student is called, equipping them to live all of life for Christ.Middle school and high school homeschoolers, and even younger students, can begin being intentional about activities that build skills for their future career plans. Even if your teen has yet to decide what career path they wish to take, many soft skills and life skills are universal for all education levels and job positions. Additionally, Wendy shares specific ways military teens can find skill-building opportunities wherever the military sends their family.
Vital Soft Skills to Develop:
Wendy also goes into detail about ways military homeschool teens can be intentional about finding and utilizing activities for skill and resume building, even while still in school, as well as pitfalls to avoid.
. . . . . .
Wendy met her spouse when he was in the Navy; per her request, he ended his Navy career after eight years. They settled into normal life, had their son, bought a house, and were civilians for nine years. However, her husband never really lost the call of the military, and after a strong sign from God, he reenlisted in the Army. Stationed at Fort Carson, she became very involved in spouse programs mentoring spouses in the expectations of military life, career, and family. She followed a long-time dream and completed her associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in communication. Wendy will begin her master’s degree in industrial organizational psychology this year at the University of Maryland.
Seeing the difficulty service members and family members who may move often have, Wendy, found her niche in helping service members and spouses to find employment. She jumped in with every move and studied employment every step of the way. Taking a job with the Department of Labor Working with thousands of service members by teaching the mandatory Department of Labor employment readiness classes, then also providing training to staff and service members of the Wounded Warrior Army and Airforce programs, assisting as a subject matter expert for the USO employment office and Hiring Our Heroes Job fair in Hawaii, and volunteering with the Army Community Services employment office. When her family moved again, she became the Military Spouse Liaison for the Workforce Solutions office in San Angelo and the volunteer lead for the Military Spouse Professional Network chapter for Goodfellow Airforce Base.
In May 2022, Wendy launched her own consulting business that assists clients in the art of communication, potentially focusing on career change or development, public speaking, and small business employee retention. She works one-on-one with clients, facilitates group classes, and speaks at events on these topics. Wendy has developed an exceptional understanding of employment from both the job seeker’s perspective and the employer’s. She provides clients with a detailed process in career development and change. She continues to work with businesses to bring awareness to the talent pool of potential employees, military spouses, and family members can be. She loves to recreate resumes and get people on the correct path to a wonderful career despite frequent moves or job changes.

On this episode, meet Stepheny Seabolt, who explains how her view of homeschooling has changed and how she now chooses and utilizes curriculum with the insights she’s gained through nearly a decade of homeschooling under her belt.
Ten years ago, when Stepheny began encountering problems with her local public school, she reached out to the school administration, who seemed unwilling to address her concerns. When charter school didn’t work out either, Stepheny and her husband decided to homeschool.
At first, upon recommendations from other homeschoolers in online groups, she used free homeschool programs. But, as her daughter got older and she added two more children to the mix, it became more difficult and time consuming to use the free programs.
She also realized that with three children vying for her time, she needed a home education program in which she could combine multiple ages for different subjects.Stepheny admits, “I was the one who thought we had to do all the worksheets and all the flashcards and all the drills, and it almost drove me insane.” Her advice for new homeschoolers as they search out homeschool curriculum options is to know that “you don’t have to do everything.”
Stepheny shares that she eventually realized, “I don’t have to look like the public school.”Nowadays, Stepheny says, “What I use changes based on each kid because each has their individual needs.” This ability to be flexible and to determine what works best for our family is a huge benefit of homeschooling!

There is no doubt that homeschooling can be difficult, especially when you are dealing with other stressors that are out of the ‘norm.’ So what can you do when homeschooling becomes even more challenging due to a deployment, illness, or other family crisis?
When things get complicated, it’s important to remember that homeschooling, AND military life, is a journey- there will be ups and downs. That’s just a given. On this episode, Crystal Niehoff shares some ways she’s learned through personal experience as a military spouse and homeschool mom to deal with tough times as military homeschool families.
“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” -Michael Jordan, basketball legend.

Homeschool Grades: How to Assign and Track Your Learner’s ProgressIn this episode, Crystal discusses the ins and outs of homeschool grades. And hopefully, by the end of the show, you’ll better understand how to grade your homeschooler and come away with a few tips to keep it all organized.
How to Assign and Track Your Learner’s Progress
Episode #35 – So, you’ve decided to homeschool your kiddos. Everything is ready- from the best homeschool curriculum to the perfect learning space in your home. You’ve got all your bases covered! Or, you thought, until someone asks how you’ll grade your homeschooler. That’s when it hits- how are homeschoolers graded? If this sounds familiar, or you just want to be sure you’re doing things correctly- then you’re in the right place!
A perspective on homeschool grades
Any experienced homeschooling parent will tell you one main perk of homeschooling is its flexibility. Yes, there are requirements in each state that may direct how many hours you have to educate your child, and there may even be requirements specific to what grading system you must use; however, most often, parents are free to decide what best suits their family’s needs. So, evaluating your homeschooler’s progress comes down to one central question: to grade or not to grade?
Why does grading matter?
The answer to this question depends on a couple of factors. First, if your state requires letters or percentage grades for homeschooled students, there is no way around it; you must grade your homeschoolers. If there are no specific requirements, whether to grade or not becomes more of a personal choice.
What about college?
Many homeschooling families choose to wait until high school before introducing a structured grading system, and this is because their students will be entering college in a few short years. Implementing grades at this level helps colleges assess the student’s competency and readiness for college-level learning. However, for those not keen on switching over to formal grades, a grading system is not necessarily the “golden standard” for homeschoolers entering college.
The ‘how and when’ of grading
As highlighted above, grading your homeschooler is often a personal choice. If grading is what feels right, then go for it. But it is essential to find a grading system that works best for you and your students.
Luckily, there are several different grading systems to choose from. Some options include:
For grading art and other subjective assignments, options include:
How to record and track your homeschooler’s grade
Fortunately, as with grading systems, there are plenty of options for logging and tracking grades:
Listen in to learn why grading matters and options for grading. Some examples include percentage and letter grades, pass or fail, standard, and narrative grading. And while these grading systems are easy to apply to subjects such as English and math, a different approach is often needed for more subjective lessons, such as art. Fortunately, there are many options for grading subjects like art as well. Lastly, once you’ve decided which way to go for grading, there are great options for tracking your student’s progress. From journals to websites, there are plenty of choices to keep everything organized, making it easy to find when you need it.

Episode #25- This week, Crystal tackles the top three questions she receives from military homeschooling families: How do I start homeschooling? Can I use Home of Record to register our homeschool? Are we able to homeschool when stationed overseas?
All three of these frequently asked questions have been answered in more depth on previous podcast episodes. This episode aims to bring all three of these FAQs conveniently together in one place.
Question #1: How do I start homeschooling?
Probably Crystal’s most frequently asked question. Here’s a quick 5-step guide to get you started homeschooling:
Question #2: Can we use Home of Record when declaring (or registering) our homeschool?
The quick answer is, unfortunately, no.
The longer explanation is- You are not able to use Home of Record when registering that you homeschool unless it’s the state where you are actually currently and actively residing. Otherwise, you must use your current address, the locale where you are actually residing for 30 days or more.
Question #3: Can we homeschool when stationed overseas and how?
Yes, military families may be able to homeschool overseas. However, it’s important to note that the family must be on the sponsor’s orders.
If you and your children are on your sponsor’s orders, and let’s say the sponsor gets orders to Germany. If it’s a country like Germany that has the Status of Forces Agreement, then you can homeschool because the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has no regulation over homeschooling.
Crystal also touches on two additional questions, so be sure to listen in to this week’s show!

Homeschooling provides consistency and stability in the midst of military life. Plus, it offers flexibility. Want to travel or relocate temporarily during a deployment? No problem. Your homeschool goes with you wherever you go. Your kids won’t have to change schools, adjust to new teachers, or struggle to make friends with new classmates mid-year. It also allows your children to be available for those precious moments when dad is able to call or facetime with them, even if it’s after bedtime or during a normal school day. Added bonus- the time spent with your children while your spouse is deployed will bond you all closer together.
But home-educating your kids while solo parenting can be draining and leave you feeling like you’re in survival mode for the nine months or year that your spouse is away. Listen in to find encouragement and some workable solutions to help you homeschool through the next deployment.

Homeschool Schedule Vs. RoutineHomeschool Schedule Vs. Routine Episode #41 – In this episode, let’s discuss how to determine the ideal way to plan your homeschool days to ensure success!
Homeschool Schedule Vs. Routine. When it comes to ensuring a productive homeschool day, having some plan in place allows you and your homeschooled students to know what to expect for the day as well as help avoid any unnecessary power struggles when it comes to what activity to do next. Knowing their homeschool plan for the day helps kids avoid asking for electronics during the school day and helps Mom avoid caving into their requests simply because she doesn’t have the next lesson planned or prepped.
Listen in as Crystal discusses which is better for military homeschooling families- schedule or routine- and shares important reminders that flexibility is key. Consistency is vital regardless of what method you choose.
Regardless of what method or combination of methods you use to organize your homeschool schedule. There will be an adjustment period for both you and your children. Lessons may be missed, activities may need to be rescheduled, and you may have to repeat “Check the schedule/ routine!” more times than you would like.
Eventually, everything will seemingly come together, the days will run smoother, and the kids will be more engaged in their lessons than ever. And you will be grateful you took the time to overhaul your days with a consistent and reliable homeschool schedule or routine as you accomplish your homeschool education goals.

Episode #22 – On this week’s episode, learn how you can use deschooling to reframe and reset the joy of learning for you and your child.
Deschooling is the process of detaching oneself from traditional schooling methods and structures in order to allow for more creativity, freedom, self-expression, and peace. This is done over a period of time, during which you do little formal school work in order to reset your child’s natural love of learning.
Deschooling can be done in a variety of ways, depending on your needs and preferences as well as the needs of your child. You may also find that during the deschooling process, you adjust your understanding of and approach to how your child learns best. During this time, your child isn’t expected to complete worksheets, study from a textbook, or sit to listen to boring lectures. Deschooling is a time of reframing our ideas of how, when, and where learning takes place.
Some ways to deschool:
Learning doesn’t require textbooks, worksheets, or a classroom. Learning can happen anywhere, day or night. And the great thing about homeschooling is that we know that our children are always learning! As parent/ teacher we can allow our children the freedom to learn in whatever mode suits them best, even if that means on the couch or floor, standing or moving around, frequent breaks, and incorporating hands-on practice.
Listen in to learn more about deschooling as a way to reframe and reset the joy of learning for both you and your child.

They have five kids ages 19 to 35, and a couple of grandkids who are also homeschooled. Lisa holds an M.A. in Human Development and M.A. in Marriage & Family Therapy. In addition to homeschooling and her work as Director of True North Homeschool Academy, Lisa has worked as an Admissions Counselor, Administrator, Copywriter, Blogger, Academic Adviser, Teacher, Event Planner, and Program Developer.
Homeschool parents often dread the thought of preparing high school transcripts for their high schooler and feel confused about what should be included. Episode #27 – As parents, we love giving our children gifts and seeing their eyes sparkle with delight. But we do our kids a disservice when we fail to teach them the blessing of having a grateful heart. On today’s show, Crystal talks about ways to encourage a grateful heart in your children, not just during the holidays but all year long.Giving and receiving gifts is a wonderful blessing; however, the Christmas season tends to over-encourage a “gimme” attitude in children, which can lead to a feeling of entitlement rather than gratitude.

Teaching Subjects You Don’t KnowS2, E8 – Feeling unqualified to teach your kids? Don’t worry, it’s normal! If you’re struggling with a subject you’re not familiar with, check out these helpful tips for teaching subjects you don’t know.
Have you ever wondered if you are genuinely qualified to teach your children? Especially when faced with teaching subject matter that you don’t know. It’s completely normal to question your abilities, even if you have a degree in education. So, what can you do when what your children are learning is outside your expertise? What if you just don’t know what you’re doing?
There is no possible way to know everything you will ever teach your children prior to actually teaching them. You are not a human encyclopedia. Even the best teachers don’t know everything. We all have experiences that master different skills. Like, you may be a whiz at math yet have a child who struggles in that area but is totally into literature or science. What a wonderful thing to have a family that is multi-passionate. One that pursues knowledge in a multitude of subjects. But what a challenge, too.
On this episode, let’s talk about what to do when that happens and how to teach what you do not know.

Fostering Resilience with Morgan Farr, Part TwoS2, E7 – Fostering Resilience with Morgan Farr, Part Two. Listen in as Crystal chats with military wife and homeschool mom Morgan Farr. Crystal and Morgan talk about the hot topic of socialization. Then Morgan shares how she homeschools children with unique needs as she addresses her own needs as someone with autism.
Part TwoMorgan and Crystal talk about the hot topic of socialization. Morgan explains that traditional school “socialization” is not how the real world operates. She says, “The world is full of dynamic individuals- people of different ages, races, religions, beliefs, backgrounds- and I want my kids to know that that is the norm.” Further, she shares, “I want my kids to grow up knowing that learning is a lifelong endeavor. Saying ‘I don’t know,’ or ‘I’m not sure,’ is totally acceptable. . . I don’t think you can learn to do that well when surrounded by your own age group and your own demographic.”
During part two, Morgan also tells her secret to keeping her sanity as an adult with autism while homeschooling several children, including one with ADHD. She gives tips and advice on adapting to each family member’s unique needs, which nurtures empathy and respect for others, as well as cultivating strong communication skills that they will carry into their interactions with others throughout their lives.

Fostering Resilience with Morgan Farr, Part One
S2, E6 – Fostering Resilience: Homeschooling, Military Life, and Special Needs Sensitivity- A Conversation with Morgan Farr, Part One. Listen in as Crystal chats with military wife and homeschool mom Morgan Farr. In this two-part series, they discuss homeschooling as it relates to military life, when both mom and child have unique needs, during the recent pandemic, and so much more!
Part One
Morgan shares that she was a public school kid and became a teacher after attending Texas A&M University. She struggled in school a lot more than anyone realized but was able to grit her teeth and pull through high school until she could get her feet under her in college since she was better able to curate her education around my needs at that time. As an adult, Morgan was diagnosed with autism, which she feels would have been helpful to know when she was a child. Many things were lost in the shuffle of being just one of many students in the hallways, sharing that her needs flew under the radar.
Morgan’s husband is a legacy homeschooler. His mother homeschooled three kids from kindergarten through high school. She individually curated their education around their interests and goals. Morgan’s husband and siblings are incredibly well-read across a wide range of subjects due to the culture of learning within their family. When one of them wanted to do Lego robotics, they all did it together. When one of them read the Redwall series, they all read it and discussed it. As a result, her husband’s family have a strong bond.
When it came time to decide about her own children’s education, homeschooling was Morgan’s first choice. As she shares during Part One, homeschooling in a military family has two major benefits: World Experiences and Off-Time. Morgan then dives into explaining how they make homeschooling a family affair!
You don’t want to miss this episode!
Next week, during Part Two, Crystal and Morgan talk about the hot topic of socialization. Then Morgan shares how she homeschools children with unique needs as she addresses her own needs as someone with Autism. Listen to Part Two HERE.

Homeschooling a Rebellious Child with Deborah WuehlerEpisode #39 – As homeschool parents, there are days when we struggle to get our children to concentrate on their studies and do their best. However, what if a child fights against us in nearly everything? Is it even possible to homeschool a rebellious child?
Special guest Deborah Wuehler was excited to start homeschooling her children and knew they belonged at home with her. She had seen the fruit of homeschooling in the lives of other children and wanted that for her own.
However, her middle child was strong-willed, and every day was a struggle. But Deborah, with the Lord’s help, discovered ways to work with her daughter through her rebellion and home-educate her. As a result, her daughter is now a well-adjusted, happy, godly young woman, and they are blessed to have a close relationship. In today’s episode, Deborah shares how we, too, can homeschool a rebel.
Guest Bio:
Deborah Wuehler is the Senior Editor and Director of Production of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine. She is wife to Richard and has been homeschooling their eight children since the birth of their firstborn 32 years ago. They have graduated seven children so far and have one high school student. Deborah is an author, speaker, and devotional leader. Her most popular workshop is Homeschooling the Rebel.
She has written several Bible reading plans for the Bible App on YouVersion.com called Homeschool Moms Teach the Psalms and writes regularly for The Homeschool Minute. Her editorials are on Crosswalk.com, Homeschool Compass, and many state homeschool newsletters. Deborah’s passion is to encourage homeschool families to keep their focus on Christ and His Word and to let them know they are making the best educational choice possible when they choose to keep their children Home, Where They Belong.

Finding Your Military Homeschool TribeEpisode #37 – Moving is a fact of life for homeschooling military families. Still, making connections with like-minded homeschoolers can be challenging. This week, Crystal talks about ways to find your homeschool tribe wherever the military sends you and your family.
One great aspect of military life is that we know our time in any given community is limited, so we tend to work to get connected and make friends quickly. Start searching before you move!
Orders are in hand; you know where you’re headed, but you’re still weeks or even months out from your PCS. Not much you can do tribe-wise at this point, right? History of Homeschooling: Oh, How Far We’ve Come!Episode #36 – Crystal shares the remarkable journey of homeschooling in the United States from colonial days to modern day, legal to illegal, and back again. You will come away grateful for the homeschool freedoms we enjoy today!
At this point in American history, especially in the wake of mass shutdowns in 2020, homeschooling seems to most people as though it’s just another viable and obvious option when it comes to educating our children. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see school-aged children out and about with Mom or Dad while public schools are in session, and rarely does anyone even notice anymore. However, this has not always been the case.
Today, with an estimated 3.7 million children nationwide homeschooling at the end of 2022, it is obvious that homeschooling is quickly becoming a seriously considered and desired option for American parents, and even more so for military families. Thankfully, it’s an option available to parents in all 50 states. And military homeschoolers can usually homeschool while stationed abroad.
Is Homeschooling Legal? It almost seems a bit odd now to think about homeschooling being anything but legal and welcomed in the United States, but the history of homeschooling has a long journey. It has not always been legal or allowed, and many families in the 70s and 80s even had to consider moving their families to a different state to hide the fact that they had children that would not be enrolled in the public school system. Parents who homeschooled their children during this time could get in trouble for “contributing to the delinquency of a minor.” It was a serious infraction that could even lead to jail time. Can you imagine? It seems like a different world!
It’s been a long journey in the U.S., but it’s been worth it as all families now have the ability to choose the best method of educating their children, including the option to homeschool. As military families, we know that freedom isn’t free. The same is true for our homeschooling freedoms. Moving forward, may we never forget the words of educator and homeschool proponent John Holt, “It is the duty of a citizen in a free country not to fit into society, but to make society.”
Listen to today’s episode to learn about the remarkable journey of homeschooling in the United States from colonial days to modern day, legal to illegal, and back again. You will come away grateful for the homeschool freedoms we enjoy today!

Raising Readers: Reading Aloud Past the Kinder YearsEpisode #34- On this podcast episode, Crystal talks about the importance of reading to children of all ages and how to make your family read-aloud time a fun adventure for everyone, Mom and Dad included!
Parenting is one of those things that come with a never-ending list of “research suggests you should ______.” Opinions, studies, best practices, and ever-evolving philosophies abound when it comes to how to raise your children successfully and, at the very least, how to avoid messing them up! You don’t have to look far to find the latest unsolicited advice, from never saying no to your children to not letting them eat even one grain of sugar.
Much of the advice, as well-meaning as it may be, is speculative, highly debated, and “trendy.” You can find conflicting evidence everywhere that suggests there isn’t a single universal “truth” in how to best navigate the world of child-rearing outside of the Bible. Yet, aside from this, it is universally agreed that reading with your children is important. Reading with your children is the simplest and most effective way to support your children’s education and raise healthy, well-rounded children.
Raising Readers:Making Read Alouds an Everyday Part of Your Homeschool
So, how do you incorporate reading out loud into your homeschool routine?
● Start small. Take it one simple step at a time. Start by picking a book you will enjoy.
● Don’t expect an hour of attention, even from your older children.
● Quite hands don’t need to be still hands. Your kids may need to keep their hands busy in order to keep their ears open. Have a sketchbook where for kiddos to draw what you’re reading about. This allows them the freedom to engage with the story and encourages them to build their narration skills as they listen for little details they can add to their picture.
● Your read-aloud doesn’t have to be “age-appropriate.” Read a book that is above your child’s reading or comprehension level. Reading aloud is a time to expand your child’s capacity for critical thought. It is a time to bring a big world into your living room and engage them in dialogue about possibly “tricky” subjects. Having books that stretch them to pay attention, listen carefully, and consider what they hear carefully is an important lesson for young learners.
So, if I can encourage you today to raise readers, start reading out loud with your kids. Make it a daily part of your homeschool (even if it is the only thing you accomplish on the days that go off the rails). Start with living literature, classic stories that bring the world and the human experience to life. Engage in adventures with your children through stories that challenge and shape us.
“… they risked everything they loved, and maybe even their own lives, for the true magic. It’s our books. Our language, our culture, and our identities are inscribed in every word. As long as we have our books, we cannot be crushed or forgotten. Because of our books, we cannot be erased from our own history.” Words on Fire, Jennifer A. Nielsen

Episode #33 – On this episode, guest Wendy Baird Packard talks about how military homeschooled teens can start now being intentional about activities that build skills for their future career plans.
Middle school and high school homeschoolers, and even younger students, can begin being intentional about activities that build skills for their future career plans.
Wendy has been married to her spouse for 21 years and has a 20-year-old son. She can often be found on an adventure with her two fur babies, Rocket and Carl.

The post The New Year is a Great Time to Reset Your Homeschool: with Stepheny Seabolt appeared first on Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.
Episode #31- No matter what style of homeschooler you are, there comes a time when you just need to change things up, re-evaluate what you’re doing, and dig in with some new intentionality. What better time to do that than the turn of a new calendar year?
As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season draws to a close, homeschool moms begin to turn their attention back to the business of homeschooling, which feels much like a hustle and bustle of its own kind. On this episode, Crystal hopes to help calm some of the chaos with a quick run-down of how to ready yourself to start fresh this new year!
Winding-up the Year
The new year is a great time to do an inventory check and get a read on what life’s been like for the last few months. It’s the perfect time to put to bed what isn’t working for you and really pour into the things that are most important in your children’s education.
First Things First
If you want to start fresh, you need to finish well. As you look ahead to a new calendar year, this is a great take some time to review a few things.
This is the foundation if you will.
As you review your planner, consider how the year is going so far.
In homeschooling, there is no ahead or behind. There is only your own pace. There is really no point to homeschooling a certain way, just because it is “the best” if every day you’re met with tears and resistance. There is no success if you’re recreating school at home and pushing forward despite all signs pointing to FAILURE. That’s why a mid-year review is so important.
Homeschool Resolutions
Now that you have a clear sense of where you’ve been, what’s been working for you and your family, and you can confidently say that “yes, we want to continue this way,” or “no, we need to change this up because the joy is gone,” it’s time to start your New Year’s Resolutions of homeschool.
There are so many reasons to homeschool. Remember why you chose to do homeschool. Remind yourself of all the things that you love about this lifestyle. Hold onto the things that set you on fire for teaching your children, and dive in with a renewed passion for those things.
No matter your reason, no matter the schedule you choose to follow in the coming year, no matter the subjects you’ll teach, the field trips you’ll take, or the number of coffees you will have to consume to get you through those difficult days, remember this …
Homeschooling is worth doing, and anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Episode #30- As military families, we move around a lot! And as a result, we must determine a new dedicated homeschooling area in each house or apartment we live in every few years. On today’s show, Amber Smith from 200 Fingers and Toes joins Crystal to talk about making space to homeschool!
Homeschooling, and all the curriculum and supplies that go with it, can take up a lot of space in our homes. Many families don’t have an extra room to dedicate to school, and just finding an area for storage is a challenge. Every few years, we may also find ourselves homeschooling in the cramped confines of a hotel room or out of cardboard boxes after a PCS. Whatever the circumstance we find ourselves in, Amber offers tips and advice for creating a workable solution for your current homeschool situation.
Listen in to hear how Amber met the challenges of frequent moves and remodeling a farm while homeschooling a large family, what considerations to factor in when determining your homeschool space needs, and why education doesn’t always have to take place inside our homes!
Amber Smith and her chef husband of 26 years raised ten wild children in southern Iowa. Her desire to help homeschool parents avoid burnout, build their best life, with strong relationships led her to start blogging at 200 Fingers & Toes. Episode #29- Some military families may find themselves spending the Christmas season in a community or country than their home of origin. This is an exciting opportunity for homeschoolers to explore how other cultures observe the holidays. But, even if you’re not living overseas, you can still learn how others worldwide celebrate the season as part of your homeschool studies!
As the holiday season quickly gets into full swing, many homeschooling families are considering how they will include holiday lessons into their curriculum. From holiday-themed worksheets to art projects, gratefully, there are so many FUN options! However, for some families, especially military families living abroad, the typical approach to teaching about the holidays can seem lackluster, or miss out on opportunities to understand more about the way the local culture celebrates the season.
One fantastic aspect of being a military family and PCSing to different areas, at home and overseas, is the opportunity to experience other cultures. And, while holiday-themed worksheets bring a sense of festivity, kids don’t always learn why they celebrate a specific holiday or how their celebrations may differ from those of others.
So, listen to this episode for tips on how to incorporate holiday teaching into your homeschool program that will help your children truly learn the meaning of the season while also learning about international celebrations held worldwide.

Episode #28- For the military spouse who is trying to hold the family together on the homefront, deployments are challenging, to say the least. Add homeschooling to the mix, and it can be positively overwhelming. On this episode, Crystal shares encouragement and advice from milspouses who have been there for the mom who is homeschooling while her spouse is deployed.
