Some synthesizers seen to be raised to a mythical status. That’s definitely the case for the Oberheim OB-X. Okay, so what is this rare record I'm unboxing?? If you remember, I did a recent video on the little known genre of modular Bossa Nova (if you haven’t seen it yet, you can see it here: https://youtu.be/xUA3qqNMPtQ ). In that video I talked about the earliest mention of the combination of the two that I could find- Carlos Ayala’s album “Bossa Nova Organ Synth Moog Sonoramico Latin Lounge ” or “Organo en Bossa Nova”. The ONLY way, that I could find where I could listen to this album was to just buy the ONE record for sale on eBay! So I bought it! It came all the way from Ciudad de Mexico! So In this video I'm going to open it up, and share a little sampling of what it sounds like!! I'm so excited because I have NO IDEA what kind of experience this is going to be, but I wanted you to be here for a shared mutual discovery!

What do I mean "Queen did not like synths"?? This is a little known fact that was true for a period of time for the band, Queen. But why??? And how did I come to find out about this grudge against synthesized sounds, you might wonder? I learned of it when filming one of my very first YouTube videos. Going back to the earlier pandemic days, when we were all starving for at-home experiences, I bought a record player, and decided that if I couldn't go out to concerts, listening to full albums (in their high fidelity form) would be the closest I was going to get! So I found this little, "jab" (you might call it) towards synths in the record's liner notes of the album, A Night at Opera. It said blunty "No Synthesizers!". If you're familiar with Queen, you might be surprised to learn that, considering how experimental they were with their music... And I'll bet you're thinking "I'm sure I've heard synthesizers in their music at one time or another"... You'll just have to watch this video to get the full story!

Today we’re wrapping up this three-part series where we've explored how some of the greatest composers in history might have responded to the use of synthesizers in their compositions. In the final installment, we turn our attention to Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most celebrated and innovative composers of all time.
Throughout his career, Beethoven was known for pushing the boundaries of classical music, experimenting with new forms and techniques to create some of the most iconic works in the Western canon. But what would he have made of the synthesizer, a technology that wouldn't exist until long after his death?
In this video, I dive into Beethoven's life and music, explore his attitude and style and examine how he might have responded to the unique sounds and capabilities of the synthesizer.
I also look at a modern interpretation of one of his most famous pieces (using a synthesizer of course!)

Adjectives to describe sound (and therefore music) are very limited, and borrow from other senses, and as a result get pretty abstract! How abstract? Well, watch the video to find out! To all of you, I just wanted to tell you what an amazing, uniquely created person you are! No one has existed, or ever will exist again that’s like you. I want to encourage you, no matter what your creative outlet is, express that uniqueness that is you! You don’t need to emulate anyone else… just be you.
It's an unlikely pairing, these two instruments, but I have always loved juxtaposition! In today's episode, I wanted to introduce my electric upright bass to my analog Moog DFAM! I'm curious to see what happens, and how well they hit it off... Maybe they'll make beautiful music together. ;p

We've all heard those upbeat, happy sounding Christmas songs that make you want to either forget all your troubles (though personally I always felt like "Here Come Santa Clause" sounds more like an ominous threat, than a happy song), or put on The Nightmare Before Christmas to get some darker sounding intervals in your brain (that Danny Elfman is amazing though, just saying). It's your prerogative really. I personally prefer some minor Christmas songs, and appreciate the darker themed, old British-y or Latin Gregorian chanting Christmas songs myself. So in this episode I decided to talk about the difference between happy sounding Christmas songs and minor songs a bit, and maybe make you feel differently the next time you hear "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer".

Nerd-Out-November continues as we explore the music of popular fantasy films and shows! Today I'm comparing two of my favorite opening themes from two different (really amazing) shows, West World and Game of Thrones. The reason I'm mashing these two together in one episode is because they were both written by the amazing Ramin Djawadi! If you've never heard of him, I'm excited to introduce his music to you in this episode!

We're continuing on with "Nerd-Out-November" (exploring the music of popular fantasy films and shows) by going back to the truly epic, masterfully composed Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Now don't worry, this is a short episode... because to be honest, I could literally stay here all day unpacking all the great themes and musical ideas within this body of work! So I chose two themes, and just dabbled a little bit with them. I felt I needed to revisit the OG in light of the (in my opinion) lackluster Rings of Power opening theme composition. I felt I had to give Howard Shore credit where it's due, and remember what was great!

I'm so excited for the journey I'm taking you on this month... So much so that I'm calling it "Nerd-Out-November". What exactly does that mean, you might ask? I'm so glad to tell you! This month I'm going to touch on a few popular fantasy films and shows, and examine the music that evokes SO much feeling and overall adds to the enjoyment of the experience. For today's episode I wanted to talk about the intro music for Amazon's "Rings of Power". As I have not yet finished watching this show, I will only be exploring the opening music, and asking you if it meets the emotional reach the original scores had on millions of LOTR fans (like myself!).

We can all use some from time to time, and I believe music is an incredibly powerful method for taking time to take care of yourself; but also is a concept no one ever really talks about in this specific way. I want to change that! Last week we played with the default settings, but this time I wanted to see what other sounds we could make with it! Today I decided to get a bit nerdy with you. Among lots of other sci-fi franchises I get into, the British show Doctor Who would have to also be one of them! I'll admit, I'm new to this particular fandom (my husband got me into it several years ago (shoutout to my video editor ;). So when I learned just how modular synthesis was incorporated, I was hooked on the sound/music of these productions! So for today I want to play around a little bit with the tech that created the infamous Dalek sound (I apologize for anyone who's not familiar).

On to our topic for today... Weird things happened this week, my friends! NASA shared with us what a black hole sounds like!! Whaaaaaaat you must be thinking (if you hadn't heard this already)... doesn't sound need air to support sound waves??? Yes it does!!! A+ for you! :p HOWEVER, there is a black hole that was close enough to gasses being emitted from a nearby galaxy, and it was just enough for the sound to be heard!
If you haven't caught on by now, I love science... especially where science and sound connect, so I couldn't resist taking a crack at analyzing and giving my interpretation of what a black hole sounds like, and try to recreate it!

Happy summertime weekend, sound lovers!
It's been a hot and sunny summer, so lets play with the waves... you know I mean sound waves of course! We're going back to the place where we experiment, create stuff and have fun!
In this episode we play with saw-tooth and sine waves, combine them, and sharpen our ears to pick them out individually (while hearing them simultaneously!) Be prepared to sharpen your hearing/discerning skills, and just maybe next time you hear some sweet sweet synth sound in a song, you'll be able to tell what waves were used to create that sound!

I think we've talked enough recently about the details of colors and hertz, so today we're just continuing to put it into practice, and just make music... with an added challenge of an overheating CPU... BUT I still pulled it off (whew)!!
I like what I came up with, but if any of you have any recommendations for instruments/key signatures/notes/colors you'd like to hear me use in the future to write/play with, LET ME KNOW!!

As I promised last week, we're painting with sound today... with a little application of what we've been learning the past couple weeks, and some directional inspiration from the artist, Kandinsky... I may limit my range of note usage, but sometimes simpler is better, when there are fewer notes, the sound needs to be more interesting, and using only a few colors in abstract forms allows the viewer/listener to have more freedom of interpretation.

I (finally) found some detailed information on the science/math equation/breakdown of how music and color have a direct correlation. Now don't get TOO excited just yet... Today I'll be going over sine waves. We're going to use it as a base for a nice, sustained pad sound. Pad sounds are typically found in music associated with a calming spa atmosphere. I thought this would be a lovely vehicle to take us on a group excursion to a relaxing moment together.

As you're probably aware of by now, I really love synthesizers, but in this episode, I want to show you something else I love, my electric bass guitar! So, the difference between the synthesizer and the electric bass is that the bass is analog; simply put, my hands plucking the string is the direct cause of the effect of hearing an immediate sound.

When I recorded this one, I was feeling inspired by the day; the sun, spring making everything come to life, and feeling the vibe of it all made me realize that I felt direction in my creativity... colors came to mind, and I was aware of what elements of the day I wanted to translate into my music. That's when I realized that one tool I use to write music is appreciation.
