Women's Spaces is a 57-minute weekly show originally broadcast live Monday morning over Radio KBBF 89.1 FM from its Santa Rosa, CA studio. Elaine B. Holtz is the host and she co- produces the show with her partner Kenneth Norton. Most guests are women and the show is intended to inspire the listener to become more active in affairs affecting the health and peace of the community for generations to come. Finally, the radio/podcast show of 4/22/2024 is now online for your listening convenience. Elaine and I lost our dear friend Keith Alden to sudden kidney failure on April 15th, and we grieve his absence in our lives. Keith was a Marine Veteran who experienced the wrath and destruction of the Vietnam. He then followed the spiritual path offered by Adi Da. He was also a fighter for justice. May Keith rest in peace.
The 4/22 show was our Earth Day show featuring our co-producer Ken Norton sharing his experience as a student at San Jose State taking part in a student action February 1970, priorto the nationally organized Earth Day, in burying a car as a sign that we wanted changes in policies for the environment. Our guest Starhawk, an ecofeminist, talks about our response as a nation to Earth Day in the last 54years and the vigilance we still need. She also discusses with Elaine the Israel-Palestine war and the problems it demonstrates when people in the land of different cultures are ruled by one that favors one over the other. Dr. Harriet Fraad returns to discuss the contribution of women to fair labor policies in the nation. Some contributions were tragedies like the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, in 1911. One remarkable woman was Frances Perkins, who witnessed the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, and who was the first woman to be appointed to a cabinet position in the Whitehouse. FDR chose her for Secretary of Labor, which post she served from 1933-1945. She brought in Social Security, Child Labor Laws and the 40-Hour Work week. The weekend's outdoor graduation ceremonies, welcomed after 2020's pandemic restrictions relegated them to Zoom meetings, brings our attention to the future of the youth. Elaine Holtz interviews two members of the Sunrise movement, one a Sunrise Coordinator and teacher Christine Byrue and the second a 16-year-old student Maddy Ruddell. Maddy called in from the Sunrise Youth March from Paradise, CA to San Francisco that had reached Winters, CA, 130 miles done of the 266 mile march. Maddy will arrive with other marchers in Santa Rosa for a rally of supporters at Juillard Park on Thursday June 10th 10-11 am, and then head on to Cotati.
