Trans Radical Activist Network: Recent Episodes

Trans Radical Activist Network

TRAN (Trans Radical Activist Network) provides space and opportunities for members of the LGBTQIA+ community to share their stories, highlight the struggles they face in today's society and celebrate the strengths and creativity of their spirit. Our mantra is "Use your voice." We dare ourselves and others to engage in difficult conversations so we may build bridges between different groups in the LGBTQIA+ community and educate individuals not part of the community. Our current programming includes "Trans Files" and "Up Close and Personal."

We had a very special conversation with Billy Yates, an LA-based labor organizer who currently is the U.S. director of the Adidas #PayYourWorkers Global Campaign. We talked about how queer labor organizers have always been at the forefront of the fight for human rights for all. Based on personal anecdotes from his organizing experiences and also knowledge drawn from the history of labor organizing, Billy paints a picture of the roles that we queers can play in the current, expansive movement for all working people worldwide, to usher a new era of justice, equality and a more dignified life for all. The non-binary identity is not understood very well even within the transgender community. We had a 105 minute convo with @millenniumjess during which she allowed us to take a peak into her personal herstory, in addition to her vocal and eloquent stand for women, transgender folks, LGBTQIA+, and overall human rights. Jess is definitely fiery and has the uncanny verbal dexterity to use her fire to cut the bs and put bigots in their place. Without apologies or reservations, she dives right into difficult conversations about the sense of entitlement, self-protectionism, and collective inertia that divide us within the LGBTQIA+ community. Served up with tough love, it is a call for solidarity to dismantle systems of oppression that will doom us all. Gotta love Jess, a self-proclaimed "angry," aggressively-out lesbian radical feminist! (After talking to Jess, I am now 120% convinced that we must stop calling TERFs "radical feminists." Can't we just call them Trans-Exclusionary Faux Feminists instead???) Get ready to listen with a beverage of your choice or a joint. It's like a shot in the arm for your brain!!!

Last Friday, our world was shaken up by MTG's introduction of an anti-Trans bill to the House. The bill is disguised to "protect children's innocence," while essentially aiming to erase transgender people out of existence. Co-hosts Noah the Stigma Fighter and @tsukuru_agender discuss where to go from here and how to fight back.

In this very full, deliciously irrelevant and serious at times one hour and forty five minute conversation, we talked about cis men, creativity in activism, sexuality and being a top-tier cat lady. It is a perfect listening pleasure when you want to be intellectually stimulated, laugh at the outrageousness of life and leave with the feeling of ultimate optimism.

Eric Curry, a mixed-race, 6th generation gay Latino San Franciscan, was inspired to run for the House seat to represent the city of his birth in 2021. He saw it as his duty to unseat the current representative, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, so people in his generation and beyond will have a chance in building a better future for the planet. What followed was an absolutely insane, gut-wrenching roller coaster ride, to put it mildly. In this episode of "Up Close and Personal," he bares it all. What he's learned about learning for office as an independent and darkness that lurks inside the pantheon of progressive politics that San Francisco has come to be known for.
