Joy grew up on a beef cattle farm, enrolled in a city high school and moved states to study music at tertiary level. Then she discovered the harp. After playing in professional orchestras, at weddings and events in picturesque locations and in 5 star hotels, Joy also offers harp sessions for stress reduction and vibrational healing, focussing on youth. For over 35 years she has guided students of all ages on their musical journey with piano and harp. She has radio programming and presenting experience, and has given devoted administration support to both arts and educational organisations in Queensland.
Joy has 3 adult children and has a passion for travel, nutrition, poetry, permaculture and tiny house living.

"Remnants" is an exhibition of installation, assemblage and mixed media works by Oak Beach artist Jill Chism. Selected existing works will be presented in dialogue with new works, contextualising Jill’s career as an artist working in Far North Queensland since the early 1990s. Rather than a dystopian view of the planet, Chism’s material investigations question our inevitable relationship with what remains of the natural world. Chism offers another, existential possibility of moving away from the cultural trance of separateness and materialism, towards an understanding of our connectedness, to each other and the cosmos.
This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, provided through Regional Arts Australia and administered in Queensland by Flying Arts Alliance. Additionally it received support from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) with Douglas Shire Council. NorthSite Contemporary Arts is assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. The organisation is also supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

Yalanji culture informs my knowledge of our traditional stories and lifestyle and I use contemporary means to express my ideas. Kuku Yalanji people feel a deep connection to their traditional lands (Bubu). We find harmony and a place of belonging when out on our Bubu. This is our way of healing. It is our Lore.

In this episode, we explore Naomi Evans’ story of coming home to her authentic self through studying art and taking time for herself. We hear of the transformation this brought forward in her life as we discuss the range of ways creativity can manifest. As Naomi (Mum’a Nai) explores turning the old and discarded into something new and useful, she also discovers new aspects of herself in the process, urging her to bring these discovers to her community so that they too can build resilience in their everyday lives. Mum’a Nai shares her top tools for cultivating resilience, suggests an art practice we all can explore, and reminds us to give ourselves permission to explore.
Mum’a Nai is an emerging artist born in Cairns in 1985. She has been creating from home her whole life, and most of her work has been around repurposing used and discarded objects, exploring the notion of beauty and function, and she has previously dabbled in floristry and making pallet wood furniture, creating flexibility to explore different styles, materials, and mediums outside the box; resulting in a crossover between traditional and contemporary craft and conceptual art. Her influences are her parents and grandparents, who were all creative in a variety of ways, and instilled a deep-seated value around repurposing. Her practice focuses on the female form, the human condition, exploring feelings, connection, community, belief systems and ideologies, storytelling, sharing positive messages and personal life experiences.
Nai is currently working on a group exhibition for a female based theme – ‘Resilience in the Face of Adversity’, to be exhibited in 2025.

Natalia Lagi'itaua Mann is a harpist and resonance artist. Her work is contemporary and environmental, always questioning: “If all the world is vibration... “, using music to explore the nature of reality. At the crossroads of classical music, free jazz, indigenous and contemporary arts, Mann is regularly commissioned to create and perform new music in collaboration with leading choreographers, artists and community groups.
Her personal oeuvre follows a series of research residencies: New work Sea Change is a large collaborative work about changing sea levels. The Blue Pen books intuit wisdom from the Pleiadian star system. The Sonic Earth learns the musical resonance of trees and plants. The Art of Listening plays art as score. Synaesthetic 'light scores’ as film, photography and installation are an extension of Mann’s musical practice, and have been exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Turkey and Barbados.
Natalia has toured internationally performing her original music for harp; and has played extensively with symphony orchestras, world, pop, jazz and experimental art music. Her albums Pasif.ist (2011) and Utterance (2017) can be found on Rattle.co.nz.
At home Natalia plays for the children’s show Bulkaway Muruku (Yarning Together), and therapeutic music at Cairns Hospital. She is a harp teacher and community mentor for the Far North Queensland Harp Connection.
Born in Wellington, Aotearoa to Samoan and Australian parents, Natalia has lived in Los Angeles, Melbourne, Istanbul and now resides in Yidinji Country with her partner Victor Steffensen and extended family, descendants of the Takalaka people of North Queensland area.

"I am Patricia, my story starts with direct bloodline of the Dauareb tribe from Dauar and Waier of the Eastern Isles of Murray which is where I was raised, Meriam which means of Murray Island. My nucleus family first moved to Cairns over 20 years ago. Third language English, we evolved to a new way of living. Soon after high school I worked and travelled around Australia through most of my young adulthood dedicating myself to adventure, gratitude and new opportunities. Today Mooroobool is my home. My community orientation derives from being raised in a thriving environment filled with Meriam culture, traditions and core Christian values: Everyone is family. I don’t have a passion but I do have purpose. I started as a volunteer, working very closely with a number of multicultural families inside of the 3Ms for the most of eight years.
First volunteering in the school tuckshop at Cairns West State School then P&C directorship then State representation to caucus in the Senate with P&C QLD and QLD ED for ‘GONSKI’; I have support my Meriam elders launch and structure our community Meriam Buai Torres Strait Islander Corporation Cairns registered since 2018; I have grassroot Multicultural Mooroobool with one other elder from Penryn Island of the Cook Islands, to then register APEX Community Support Inc. with our community collective from five different local cultural groups! The same joint vision over the years- 1) lay a community foundation where our community-based-approach can take ownership of our needs. 2) develop our own activities and programs to meet positive outcomes in reaching resolution of our community challenges. 3) Now, these communities have a voice and a bridge for much needed support, yarns space and community fun too! Currently I am operating as a sole trader connecting, developing, and sharing what I know and what works in communities. is of I Taukei Decent (indigenous Fijian) with a background in Public Health having started his career in the area of Adolescent Health and Development, through the Fiji Ministry of Health. Isoa's work then was in the area of sexual health with HIV awareness. Following that he moved into the NGO space where his work focussed on rural WASH programs integrating Disaster Risk Reduction as well as Socio Economic Development. Always with a passion for development particularly working with grassroots people, he has worked in the area of development and has opened up his understanding of the many, facets of development and importance of engaging with key stakeholders for the successful delivery of programs. RISE is Isoa's first opportunity working with informal settlements and it’s been as rewarding as it has been challenging. Hopefully through the proof of concept we’re aiming to provide in the RISE program, we should be able to address access to services such as waste water management for urban informal settlements in Fiji and the Pacific. Informal settlements are home to more than 1 billion people worldwide who face adverse living conditions and suffer from poor health and wellbeing as a result of inadequate water and sanitation services, and environmental exposure to pathogens, pollutants and disease vectors. RISE’s vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of residents of urban informal settlement across the developing world by improving the environment in which these communities live. To achieve this, RISE is trialling a holistic water-sensitive approach to upgrading sanitation, drainage and climate resilience through a randomised control trial (RCT) involving 12 informal settlements in Suva, Fiji, and 12 settlements in Makassar, Indonesia – half of which are being upgraded as ‘intervention’ settlements under the RCT, and the other dozen ‘control’ settlements to receive upgrades following completion of the RCT. RISE is collecting the first-ever rigorous scientific evidence of the human and environmental impacts of this water- sensitive revitalisation approach to inform policies and investments to improve living conditions for residents of informal settlements around the world.

A personal journey as a musician from the teachers that inspired her, supported by her talented parents and the orchestras Kyrene has played in. Now with two degrees, two jobs and a string of experiences, Kyrene has switched from Violin to Viola. Follow this journey to find out how this happened and what that means to a musician to switch instruments.
This podcast aims to inspire young musicians through sharing Kyrene’s story. From her birth and early years in London, U.K to moving to Cairns, Australia, now living in Melbourne. Learning violin at the age of 8, tutored by her mother, the virtuosic, internationally famed violinist, Kirtley Walker-Halstead, Kyrene went on to achieve a scholarship to the Trinity Anglican School in Cairns. Influenced and inspired by the many teachers and orchestra leaders along the way, Kyrene has now become a teacher and mentor to young people herself.
“My love for the violin and now the viola, the community orchestras and concerts I have played in and now the move to Melbourne has enabled me to sustain myself professionally. Now with various music teaching jobs, a Bachelor of Creative Industries (JCU) and my current degree, Bachelor of Education (Victoria Uni) majoring in music, I look forward to the future, always playing music.”

True Friends invites the audience into a quirky, fresh, but recognisable world in which 2 young women become friends and flourish. Through the journey of their friendship the play takes deep dives into the unremarkable, often invisible tech we use on a daily basis.
Characters sing when they want to, and the story builds to a climax with Aaron inserting a play within a play, borrowing from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and taking the play into another level of nautical twinsanity.
The project cultivates the new talent in Aaron Lee and extends Tropical Arts’ inclusive theatre practice from a workshopping ensemble training and producing an annual, large-cast, innovative Shakespeare production at Tanks Arts Centre, to producing the work of local playwright with a disability. Aaron Lee is well-known in the disability and theatre sectors in Cairns, volunteering regularly and attending a lot of theatre. With his trademark question-asking, Aaron has cultivated an enthusiastic support base, with many being amazed at his achievement and keen to see his work onstage. It is a dream of Aaron’s to see his work being brought to life.
The production will employ a team of professional theatre makers to stage the play. Two professional actors will take on the two key roles and actors from Tropical Arts and ARC Disability Services Arts Program will fill the minor roles and populate the world of the play, carrying on Tropical Arts commitment to inclusion and diversity.

True Friends invites the audience into a quirky, fresh, but recognisable world in which 2 young women become friends and flourish. Through the journey of their friendship the play takes deep dives into the unremarkable, often invisible tech we use on a daily basis.
Characters sing when they want to, and the story builds to a climax with Aaron inserting a play within a play, borrowing from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and taking the play into another level of nautical twinsanity.
The project cultivates the new talent in Aaron Lee and extends Tropical Arts’ inclusive theatre practice from a workshopping ensemble training and producing an annual, large-cast, innovative Shakespeare production at Tanks Arts Centre, to producing the work of local playwright with a disability. Aaron Lee is well-known in the disability and theatre sectors in Cairns, volunteering regularly and attending a lot of theatre. With his trademark question-asking, Aaron has cultivated an enthusiastic support base, with many being amazed at his achievement and keen to see his work onstage. It is a dream of Aaron’s to see his work being brought to life.
The production will employ a team of professional theatre makers to stage the play. Two professional actors will take on the two key roles and actors from Tropical Arts and ARC Disability Services Arts Program will fill the minor roles and populate the world of the play, carrying on Tropical Arts commitment to inclusion and diversity.

Aaron Lee is an emerging writer who is generating excitement in theatre-making in Cairns. Aaron is a prolific creative who has overcome many barriers to success by his vibrant curiosity and heartfelt energy. From volunteering on local theatre and film productions, to becoming the driving force in the development of his own work, Aaron has written and is producing “True Friends”, a show that will warm your heart.
Avril Duck is a local theatre director has built a portfolio of grass roots arts and cultural projects. She has dedicated her creative talent to inclusive practices within the FNQ area for over 20 years. Supporting Avril in this project supports her to develop regional creativity, community connectedness and visionary theatre productions.

Tailor Birds, electric violinist, dream folk artist, storyteller, connector of plants, writes music and tries to connect her people to hopes and dreams. Her work with the plants and her 5 string electric always develops and blends worlds together, creating unknown possibilities ones she doesn’t even expect. Currently finishing the new Tailor Birds album, she also works with plants and is currently connecting the sounds of the Babinda Boulders to include in her ongoing exploration as a creator and lover of wondrous spaces.
DETAILS
Tailor Birds, is the creation of electric violinist, Sophie Kinston. Her music is created from the core sounds of the electric violin, bringing in foley art, live looping artistry, she also brings in guest musicians from around the globe. Leaning in towards storytelling, this is music for the soul, and music to unite, music for people looking for something that little bit different. Sounds that could be described almost as dream folk music, Sophie over these past years, has connected electrodes to the plants, turning the electrical currents into musical notes, via the use of the Plant Wave by the folks at Data Garden, and these create the backdrop of sounds to her music, slowing both herself down, but also those who hear the music, giving them a chance to breathe, and a moment in time. With a mission to come up to the Babinda boulders and various other areas in far north Queensland, to record the electrical currents of the trees, the forest, this gorgeous space, this has been part of one final tour through Australia, before Sophie heads to Ireland for some time. This doesn’t mean she’s never returning of course!!
With various gigs, markets, and sound immersion events, the Babinda boulders is among a few special spaces that is part of Sophie’s work towards documenting her plant music journey, for her various online channels, but also for her own musical development. Over a couple days, Sophie has been heading through the various areas in the Babinda Boulders area, connecting the plants to the electrodes, learning about the different sounds omitted from the plants, and what she found was intriguing. Everyone who walked past Sophie recording these sounds, heard the music, and was inquisitive. The notes that were omitted, were also quite diverse and not what she expected. This podcast and all that is associated with that, is a discussion of this work, delving a little deeper into the world that is Sophie / Tailor Birds, storyteller, travelling musician, and a lover of wonder.

The Rainbow Song Lines engages women in cultural and spiritual practices (traditional and contemporary) to deepen their understand of S.E.L.F (self-empowerment love and freedom) and their PLACE in the world. Velvet Eldred’s work Building a Bridge to Belonging is a body of work about building cultures of belonging. A partnership between Karen Reys and Velvet Eldred, together they explore their spiritual practice and journey of unifying ideals that recognise EVERYONE’S inherent VALUE and WORTH. The journey to share Aboriginal cultural knowledge and wisdom, that realigns participants to the universal energy of light and love.
Intent of the podcast is to change the world, make it a better place, a place for our children to belong.

Heather and Nicola speak about a life drawing 6 minute exercise that has turned into a limited edition screenprint. They talk about life's funny way of bringing people together when there is magic to be made.
Heather and Nicola met doing life drawing in Cairns in 2021 - Heather as the life drawing model and Nicola as an artist. Life Drawing was held at InkMasters, (now Northsite Contemporary Arts), Greenslopes Street, EdgeHill Then at the WOW - Women of the World Festival Marketplace held in May 2022, Nicol had a stall selling her artworks, Heather was attending the event via work as a nurse. This reconnecting has lead to a connection that has awakened a creative collaboration - watch this space as it unfolds.
