Ten ideas to build more 'conviction'. Conviction is at the heart of any story. These ten ideas are from mentors, business leaders, and a little from my own experience. This is part one of two.
We can have technique, form, strategy and tactics, but if we can't bring the 'fire' then over time, our work is often ignored.
Tracy Goodwin specialises in helping business owners and entrepreneurs unlock the power of their true voice, to attract better clients and get more sales.
When you're able to connect with your authentic voice, people feel immediately connected to you and your expertise, your message lands more powerfully, and your sales improve. You also get a new level of confidence.

What do you do when someone copies your offer or business idea?
Obviously there can be cases where you might have a copyright avenue. But often with online business, or smaller offers, people will see an idea, tweak a few things, and then put it out there and there's not a lot you can do.
As markets get more saturated, this will probably happen to you more and more, so here's one way to think about differentiating yourself.
In this episode I talk with Mark Warman from Barnfield Customs.
We cover brand, story and world building.
Mark Warman was the founder and owner of a digital marketing agency, then created Barnfield Customs - Limited edition men's jackets.
The 'Lawrence Jacket' - Mark's first product, sold out in 36 hours.
You can connect with Mark on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/barnfieldcustoms/?hl=enWebsite: https://www.barnfieldcustoms.com
As markets get more saturated, how we show up matters if we want to cut through. In this episode we look at three ways to stand out in saturated markets:
There is a lot of change in the small business world, in particular coming into the back end of 2023. In this episode we look at the bigger picture, what you may be seeing, and some ideas to help you navigate it easily.
Wrap up episode from our recent live event. Includes some key takeaways and ideas for future events.

'The New Game' is part of a story driven business framework. This helps you set up your business as a 'zag' away from what everyone else is doing, and help your clients win as their world changes around them. This positions you as an evangelist, or leader for a specific 'change'. You create a business we want to be a part of.
In this conversation, Amy Bowe (Warrior School) and I go through a few steps of this framework, to see how it could fit with her current business.
Every time you face something new, you face the Resistance. This is because when we do something new, we take on emotional risk. What if it doesn't work. What if people look at us. Whatever it is. We are removing a mask in front of everyone. But this is essential if we want to see more success. We also cover a little about the next live event.
In a lot of businesses, there's a level of 'intangibility' to the offer. And even with some products, what they're really selling, is an intangible feeling. Here we look at a couple of examples of how to make the intangible more 'tangible', through the power of stories.
We talk about imagination, visualisation, and Keith Johnstone, who was the creator of Theatresports and a leading teacher of improvisation. As a business owner and creator, you live your life one foot in the present, and one foot in the future, meaning visualisation is key for success.
In this episode, John shares three things that will help improve your relationship with social media so rather that it controlling you, you maintain the sovereignty. If you're someone that finds marketing challenging this could be just the mindset shift you needed.
We have a live event coming up, and I talk about getting clear on the 'one thing' that the event is about. Clarity can be a big road block in small business, and one of the reasons we struggle, is clarity makes us accountable. It puts us on the hook. But when we can cut out all the 'extras' we can test ideas, and see the real results.
John talks with Annaliese Bevan, head coach and manager for Herstrength. Herstrength is is a gym with strength training classes for women, located in Gateshead, NSW. Annaliese shares how she got into training, how their approach is different, and the future that they are creating in the culture.
In this episode, we talk about influencers, how technology propelled the scam era, and the heightened role trust now has in the buying cycle. Then we look at what this may mean for business and marketing. We also cover the key skills that may be even more important going forward than they are already.
The future may be different, but the future is bright.
The root of the word 'motivate' is "to stimulate toward action, act as the inciting cause of".
When we look at story structure, the 'inciting incident' is the event that kicks off the story. And prior to that, the character's life sits in balance.
What we see then, when we're trying to move from the spectator to the doer, is where trying to kick off a new story. There needs to be a reason, or vision that drives the doing, which stems from an inciting incident.
Turns out, successful business owners are very good at the process. And constantly seek out new events that start a new chapter.
John visits Newstrength gym and speaks with co-owner Jacob Hodson.
We dive into some key changes in Jacobs life, and look at how they have elevated his empathy for his members, and subtly impacted the business.

If you're doing some social media marketing for your service business, you might be feeling like you want to give more value, and take your audience deeper. This is where long form content is great. Podcasts and articles are both great ways to share deeper insights with your people, connect them into your world, and build massive trust.
In this episode we look at the showdown between articles and podcasts.
Most marketing approaches start by talking about the problem that the client faces. This can work, but if your industry is crowded, you can start to get drowned out.
In this episode, we talk about the power of 'change' in marketing, and how it can drive attention.
If your message is flat, this can help you bring in the energy you need to cut through.
Behind the scenes episode with some updates on my current project, which is 'book 2' (working title still to come). I've learned a lot with this one so far, and I've taken a much different approach to the first book. Here I cover the six steps I'm taking overall, and three things I've already learned.
In this episode I talk with Janet Forbes who is a co-founder from World Anvil. World Anvil has over 2.5 million users, and is the ultimate world building platform for writers, RPG Game Masters and also teachers, business owners or entrepreneurs. Word Anvil is a software platform, a community, an education hub and a huge source of inspiration for builders and creators.
We talk about worldbuilding, character building, and how to tie this into business to create a more immersive business world.

Re-issue interview with Seth Godin. In this conversation we talk about 'seeing', empathy, project based work, and dealing with the 'noise' in the market, that is now louder than ever.
While this was recorded a couple years back it's even more relevant now.
If you want an easy way to create much more content, more easily, and sell from a much more powerful place, then you need be an advocate for 'world'. In this episode we talk about how to become an 'evangelist' for the world you are creating, before you try to sell your offer.
This will allow you to step out of comparison, and create a unique business you're proud of, as well as produce content a lot more easily.
We talk to Murray Smith of Open Mind Space about how transitioned from a life of crime and jail, into healing, yoga, and small business. We talk about making changes in life, as well as how important it can be to bring your story into your work.
For Murray, this creates relatability with his audience and the people he works with, so when they walk in, it's like they already know him.
Three ideas for more strategic marketing.
In this episode we cover three of my favourite ideas for service businesses who are already doing some marketing, to help them become more strategic. This means more direction, more focus, and less overwhelm.

As you grow your business, it doesn't always get harder. In many cases, it gets easier. Not because the work decreases, but because you learn to deal with greater amounts of stress. A lot of people focus on mindfulness, or letting difficult or stressful situations 'pass.' But in business we have to take the right action to deal with situations properly. When we do this, we adapt to the stress, and we are stronger.
We talk with Steph Moore from CrossFit CBD and Ultra Athlete on all things CrossFit, business, marketing and storytelling.
Steph switched careers from interior design to CrossFit (starting as a coach), before stepping up to help run CrossFit CBD in Melbourne alongside Karl Nevin.
CrossFit CBD is a no-BS, to-the-core CrossFit gym that has remained true to the original principles of the training methodology. Steph, Karl and the team focus on best in class coaching, and creating a welcoming community with fun and effective training. In recent years, Steph and Karl have re-invigorated CBD after the intense Melbourne lock-down period from 2020.
There are a lot of insights in this episode for anyone growing a community based business, and wanting to bring more energy into the marketing and biz.

When you build a rhythm with your marketing, you will then have a 'system.' Of course this helps with momentum, but can also be a strong signal of trust and magnetism in itself. For more on this, see the article on the Creator Club website:

A special episode today where I talk with my amazing wife Ruby about how she brings in her own interests into business to stay fired up and excited about the work that she does. When you bring in your interests and character into your business world you will create a stronger representation of who you really are and create from a place of service and inspiration.
'Getting in the room' can be one of the most powerful things you can do in business. In this solo episode we cover a unique perspective on live and offline events.
Stephanie Lock did her first degree in photography, but then realised it wasn't her true calling. She spent a year living next to a mountain (and rock climbing), where she got inspired to look into physiotherapy. The perfect balance of working with people, the outdoors, and not living at a desk.
Stephanie worked in a few different practices, before she realised she wanted to take the plunge to create her own.
We talk about getting started, marketing, storytelling, and bringing your values into your work.
You want to grow your business. And you know that you can. But you keep hitting a mental plateau and end up back into the loop of distraction. For most people, this isn't because they don't know what to do (there's a lot of info out there). But there's a lack of urgency. Things are comfortable. Growth isn't necessary.
Here we talk about how to create a 'back against the wall' strategy to stop wasting time, get stuck into action and enjoy the process of working on your business.
Check out the full article here.
At the core of your business is your individual character and personality. Who you are, what you stand for and what you want. And while this is often pushed downwards in the culture, it's a big driver for cut through marketing, delivery and sustainable, creative growth.
In this episode we talk through individuality, energy and thought, and ways to bring these out more powerfully.
In this episode we talk to Michael Fernandez, who is building an online personal training and coaching business.
We cover Michael's backstory, and his unique approach to training and helping his clients get results. In particular, we talk about how he helps clients to fall in love with their training, rather than trying to follow an arbitrary program.

In this episode we do a quick dive into how to tap into your character desires to create more compelling, 'cut through' content.

And more. Helping your audience create a deeper relationship with you as a guide.
Your mind is your most powerful asset in business.
In this episode I talk with Ryan Altman from The Supreme Yoga. Ryan is a meditation teacher, mentor, and workshop host.

Most business owners see marketing as an 'add-on' to what they do.
But in reality, your marketing and world building is how you create your customers or clients.
In this episode, we'll talk through a paradigm shift, where you can see that marketing IS in fact your business.
Sure you may be a coach, a creative business owner, a trainer... These are things that you do. But if you want to grow your business, you need to see yourself as a marketer first, who has a coaching program.
This allows you to speak to people where they are at, and totally change your relationship with your audience.
Timon and the team at Bonobo offer innovative play based movement classes for kids and adults.
In this episode, Timon shares how he got into the business, taking the risk of opening up a brick and mortar space and growing the business.
We also talk about the work that he does, specifically for the kids. Timon breaks down what the play based training for kids looks like, and how movement helps kids on a physical and mental level.
In this episode we look at one unexpected place you can look to improve your story based content.
You'll learn:
You can use this in emails, podcasts, videos or delivery to get more engagement, and even more sales.
Simone McTaggart is one of the owners and creators behind Fort Evolution, a CrossFit box and community gym based in Taree, NSW.
In this episode we cover owning a gym, building a gym community, drag racing, moving gym locations, social media and more.
In this episode we look at how to set goals by looking at the vision and then systems.
This creates outcome independence, and we then get to double down on our behaviour, which is the only thing that we can control.
When we do this consistently, we see ongoing results in the business or training, and zero neediness.
I also give a brief overview of changes for Creator Club next year.
Q&A episode on breaking through the fear of judgement. There's a lot of 'coach speak' around this out there on the internet. My take on it is a little different.
In this episode I talk about:
In this episode I cover the recent Creator Club live event, and a concept that I've been thinking a lot about lately in not just business, but personal relationships - 'never settle'.
Choosing to not settle can be uncomfortable in your business. It takes energy, and belief that you can have the result you desire and create the new reality that you want.
This is a choice any of us can make at any time.

Underselling is when you withhold vision from your dream clients.
This sounds like a silly idea, but it's incredible common.
In fact, this is one of the major hurdles for businesses in the $5k-$10k per month range (and also applies to bigger scale businesses).
In this episode we talk about how to fix up underselling in a way that feels right for you and your business world, so you can serve more clients and make more money.
This is a big topic, but character building is like personal brand, but much deeper. This is how you show up in your business, your strengths, weaknesses, nuances, and also how you drive the 'story' (or business) forward.
In this episode we cover six tips for character building for business.
Using video-based content marketing to tell your story with Cody Adams.

Bring out your personality. This is a short selection of clips on personality, brand, character building and the importance of breaking out of conformity.
Convincing, and 'pushing' does not work in sales. Nor does 'hiding' the truth. In fact, your most powerful sales will come when you have zero neediness, and create a scenario where it's 100% their decision.
One way to do this is being able to bring out the skeletons. Your program costs a lot of money? Bring that out. It's going to take time and considerable work to get the result? Great, talk about that.
In a world where many want to 'hide' these things for fear that it will repel the sale, bringing them out early can be powerful, and help create long lasting relationships and results.
Creating a closed world in your business can have big implications. Early on the lack of interoperability creates friction, but down the line it can be powerful.
This can change what platforms you use for marketing, your systems, your delivery and more.
When we work as the amateur, we're driven by our emotions. We feel we have to overcome fear, before we can move forward with our mission.
When we show up as the professional, we know that the fear never goes away.
There is always resistance.
We follow a process and do the work anyway.

It's common to get stuck in small business and not get much done.
It's not that there's a shortage of ideas, but rather that there are too many ideas, and not enough follow through.
There are all kinds of productivity tools you can use. But sometimes, when you are overwhelmed, all of that is too much.
In this episode we talk about a 'contra' view on this.
You can use it to create early momentum, and then keep it going after you are on a roll.

In this episode we talk through a couple of key points to keep in mind for your sales and marketing for both email, and social media.
When we meet most coaches and creative business owners, they usually are 'on' social media, but don't have a clear plan. They consume more than they would like, and aren't building out their unique world or sharing their story.
Some have an email list, but aren't using email to the full extent, despite email being a great platform for sales.
Listen in for more.
Demonstration value, or "show don't tell" is a powerful tool for creating vision and selling.

The thoughts and emotions that you carry into your selling play an important role. Your wants, desires, or needs 'project' onto the person you are speaking with, and will change the outcome of the sale.
Emotions are normal - we all have them - and regardless of what we do, they will come into our sales process. But being aware of this, and understanding how we can work with them is important.
In this episode we cover how important your thoughts and emotions are in your sales success, and from there, understanding how to move forward in your sales when the other person brings in a lot of emotion.

In this episode we talk to Frances Brown from FKB Physio.

A lot of coaches and creative business owners get into their work by following their passion. And this is great, it gives a strong emotional story to the business.
But we need to also see that at some stage, the business needs to make money. This will happen at different times for different businesses (getting clear on offer, learning to sell, finding market fit).
Regardless of where you are, you can start to understand, and love your numbers. The cool thing is even a small amount of financial awareness can help not just in the business, but in your broader life.
