This is the English version of the Exploradio Podcast. Exploradio is Namibia's first and only multiple prize-winning audioguide app with GPS-function. We are telling you everything about Namibia for a mindful and informed travel experience.
Pap is one of Namibia's traditional dishes par excellence, and a true all-rounder at that. The cereal porridge – pap is Afrikaans for porridge or gruel – is made from Mahangu or maize and served in every Namibian household at every conceivable time of day.Mahangu, or pearl millet, is mainly grown in northern Namibia. Traditionally, the grain is threshed by hand, ground into flour with blunt tools and separated from dirt with the help of the wind.If the pap is prepared with mahangu, it has a greyish colour. Mielie pap on the other hand is made from maize flour and is white. Even though the appearance and taste differ depending on the grain, the way of preparing the pap is the same. The important things here are the right ratio of water and flour, timing and especially perseverance when stirring the pap. But don't worry, you can also slowly get accustomed to the traditional way of cooking pap. Supermarkets sell instant pap that you only have to mix with water or milk in order to enjoy a nice meal.Usually, pap is served with meat and sauce. But there are also sweet versions that are refined with condensed milk, for example. Hardly any travellers are aware that the idyllic coastal town of Swakopmund, on the outskirts of the city, is still home to mass graves from the 1904-1907/08 genocide of the Ovaherero and Nama people. One of the country's largest concentration camps was also located in this now quiet and tranquil town. Laidlaw Peringanda, the founder of the Genocide Museum in Swakopmund, offers city tours with this historical focus and invites you to personal lectures. The atrocities of the past should not be forgotten. To restore the dignity of the victims the artist, historian and activist dedicated his work to this important cause.

This monument commemorates the genocide of the Ovaherero and Nama by the German colonial power in the years 1904-1907. By the way, the location directly in front of the "Old Fortress" in the middle of Windhoek is also historically very significant. In this way, the monument partially hides the military structure of the colonialists. Moreover, its size also changes the perspective - the former fortress, built to intimidate the local population, seems much less powerful as a result. Let your Exploradio guide take you back in time and tell you about the course of this terrible event.
In the 1950s, while Namibia was under the rule of the South African Apartheid-Government, a new law was introduced: The Group Areas act. This meant that Namibian people were to be divided into their different ethnic groups and had to live in the areas which were chosen for them. Before this law all Namibians of color in Windhoek lived in the so called "Old Location" (present day "Hochland Park").
In December 1959 an announcement was made that the people were to be moved to a new location to be able to clean the area for them - which was simply not true because the real reason was to demolish the existing buildings and clear the area for white people.
This obviously outraged the black inhabitants, because apart from having to start all over again with their housing and gardens, they would no longer be able to walk to work due to the increased distance and this meant more costs for them. Therefore on the 8th and 9th December the women organized protests.
The government answered this a day later, on the 10th December 1959, by announcing that everyone only had to leave their houses permanently within only five minutes. Then the police opened fire and shot into a group of people. Kakurukaze Mungunda's son was killed and out of sadness and anger she set a police car on fire. They shot her, killing the woman instantly. In total 13 people lost their lives on that day and over 50 were wounded. They were denied medical treatment because they were seen as political patient and thus referred to the UN.
The people had no choice but move from the old loation to the new location, which is today known as Katutura (the name translates to "the place where we do not belong").
To commemorate the victims, the 10th of December is Women's Rights Day in Namibia and co-incides with International Human Rights Day.
