In this episode I surprised my guest when she found out she sold me a pair of roller-skates for Starlight Express skate school. Lindsay used was uncomfortable with the idea of networking to grow her business until she discovered The Athena Network for women in business. Like me, Lindsay was a mature student, whilst studying for her business studies degree, Lindsay’s mother was diagnosed and later passed away from cancer. Lindsay’s Mother and Father ran a sports distribution business and Lindsay felt the right thing to do was to leave university, help her father by joining the family business taking on the roles her mother managed before her death. This was not playing to Lindsay’s strengths and loves of communication and marketing, Lindsay was now dealing with all the administrative tasks, was the company secretary and was responsible for finance and payroll. One of the products the family distributed was rollerblades and Lindsay found she was drawn to the creative side of the business by marketing and implementing promotional activities around rollerblades. When her father retired Lindsay moved to Exdexcel reporting into the CEO as the diary coordinator on a six-month contract, as they got to know each other, The CEO offered Lindsay the opportunity to create and build a new team focusing on marketing and growing the Edexcel brand. Lindsay thrived in this environment, using all the skills she had gained working for the family business as well as enjoying managing a team. This was where Lindsay discovered her love of networking; through her role and life experience Lindsay knew that knowing key people across huge organisations was key to developing good working relationships built on knowledge, understanding and respect as her experience grew, she developed her internal networking skills. Then the family arrived and like many parents, Lindsay life changed, and she launched a childminding service which helped and supported her to meet new people and build friendships after the family moved to Henley from London. When youngest of her three daughters started school, Lindsay found she had more time and she pivoted again, creating a proofreading/blogging/copywriting business. During the initial set up years another business owner suggested she should start networking, hating the idea she attended her first Athena networking meeting. Finding likeminded women and enjoying herself she joined the same day and has been a member for over 13 years, taking over the franchise for Maidenhead and Marlow and expanded into SW Oxfordshire in 2020.

Lucy Self founder of @Save My Knickers a product that will remove period blood stains from your clothing and bedsheets discusses her business highs and lows, life story, and more with Kirsty van den Bulk.
I met Lucy during an @OxLEP Business training course and have loved watching Lucy create content for social media, periods are a taboo subject, like the menopause. Lucy constantly has her social media marketing taken down as it can be considered to sexual or to shameful. Periods and menopause are not shameful subjects.
Yet, we all still say Aunt Flow- The Painters are in – On the Rag – Time of The Month, instead of I got my period. The average age for a girl to start menstruation is 12 with the average age for menopause in the UK is between 45 and 55. That is a huge number of years trying to avoid accidents.
Save My Knickers is a multi-award-winning blood stain remover empowering women to feel favourite knicker amazing every day of the month, reducing waste whilst raising awareness and smashing period taboos. Save My Knickers started life in Lucy's kitchen; fed up with ruining her own underwear, pjs and bed sheets with blood stains. Like many women Lucy could not find anything on the market that was specifically for period blood stains and more importantly actually worked.
Lucy experimented until she found the magic formula that successfully removed blood stains every time and that's when Save My Knickers was born. Lucy is the driving force behind this incredible product and has gone from NHS children's physiotherapist to hanging up her scrubs in February 2022 to take on full-time knicker saving.
Everyone will know someone who menstruates this is an episode to watch because Lucy has solved a problem that every person who has a period must deal with.

David is a business coach and I asked him to say a few words.
There is a split-second when someone has an insight, a moment of clarity or a shift of perspective.
These are the sparks I observe, and this is what makes everything I do through my work worthwhile and satisfying.
When someone gets to see life differently and for the better, I cannot describe how it makes me feel.
When my clients say, “I hate you, Dave.” I know they do not mean it; they say it with affection as their lives are changing in front of their eyes.
Whether it is a worry dissolved, anxiety faded, a fear diminished, or the courage created to move forward the people I work with feel the infinite possibilities of their life in business and all it has to offer.
When life and business are separated as in, we can have a version of ourselves for business and a version of ourselves for life. Then life and business are set on a collision course and one that most people are all too familiar with.
When you see you can be fully you in business bringing all your humanness into the business it is an advantage, not a weakness.
All humans struggle with many of the same things and in business, this is amplified. My work helps quiet the noise, see what is true, I offer practical solutions and ideas for growth.
Through all of it, I’ve got your back and together we create the difference you are searching for.

As a boy he was obsessed by travel adventure stories and told his parents that he wanted to run away to sea – to which his parents replied that there were no ships anymore, airplanes instead – and he believed them, for a while. At 18 he joined a maritime academy to become a ships officer in the merchant navy and sailed around the world both commercially and leisure for the next 20 years, ultimately earning the rank of Master Mariner. He is now a Director of The Nautical Institute, an international organisation with HQ in London and plays with as many boats as he can. Catherine Warrilow talks with Kirsty van den Bulk on The Wise Why. I met Catherine on LinkedIn and one of her posts made me giggle and I have followed her since. Catherine is the, MD at daysout.com – the ticketing website for the most talked about attractions in the UK as well as being a mum of two awkward yet lovely boys and have a love for gardening, scandi noir and Rob Beckett. Catherine comes from in Oxford and has worked in tourism and leisure for most of her career and has learnt (the hard way) how to build brands, grow start-ups and empower extraordinary teams. When Kirsty asked for Catherine for a bio to make this post she added some excellent personal touches From Catherine herself: If you’re ever visiting my hometown, Pitt Rivers Museum is a must, as is a walk around the arboretum at Harcourt. Things that make me very excitable include eating out, especially in a nice restaurant with a good window seat for a bit of people watching. Things that frustrate me – the unpredictability of what works and doesn’t on social media for brands (although it’s a game I continue to love to play) I am sure like me there will be many insights and much laughter on this Fridays episode.
Damian Marsh, associated Director at QCIC Security Assured talks with Kirsty van den Bulk on The Wise Why. As an only child, Damian found he was quite shy and introvert during his childhood. (Something the camera loves). During Damian's childhood he developed a love of sport, he liked the complexities of Lego. Playing with Action Man and enjoyed fast cars. Most of all Damian loved fast jets of the military variety. Although born in Yorkshire his family moved to Cheshire where he lived until he was 11. The family moved to a leafy suburb of Surrey where you can imagine his northern dialect stood out. Damian’s passion for aircraft drove him to applying to the RAF as a fighter pilot and getting to Biggin Hill for the aptitude tests. Successfully getting down to the final 150, sadly Damian never got to be Maverick or Goose, He does have his tickets ready for tonight’s remake release and cannot wait to see how the film stacks up. How did the would-be Top Gun move to engineering and building services? Damian loves problem solving and as an analytical Aquarian, engineering was the obvious choice. Starting with Staefa (that is now Siemens), he also worked for the likes of Trend, Thorn (aka Tyco, aka ADT), ECS Lighting Controls and then the last 15 years recently on security with Honeywell, ASSA ABLOY, Anixter and now QCIC. Damian has been fortunate to travel within his roles and visited countries and cities he would not ordinarily have seen. When Damian is not working, he still enjoys sports, although mostly watching these days, cycling and as a former DJ is still known to entertain at parties and events.

Ben set up Innovision Security as he wanted people to feel safe in their homes. I met Ben in 2015 when he worked for KBO Fire and Security, A few years later he joined the Hanwha Techwin European Product team in Chertsey. I was privileged to work alongside him and saw firsthand how much Ben loves exploring new technology as he liaised with sales and marketing and Network Optix with the Hanwha Wave VMS. It is no surprise to me he ventured out on his own and set up Innovision Security where he focuses on protecting you, your family, your home, and your business by using specialist electronic security systems. Ben started in the fire and security industry as an apprentice back in 1996 and over time climbed the ranks from apprentice to service and installation engineer, commissioning engineer, engineering manager and now. A proud owner of my own business. Having always loved technology he is still intrigued by new solutions and innovations watching them change tremendously over the years. Ben strongly believes everyone has the basic right to feel safe and to be safe inside their own home, he has seen the damage done to people and their families as a result of burglary and home invasion which is why Ben does everything possible to provide solutions to prevent this from happening in the first place, however if something does happen, his product Intruder watch will guarantee the personal safety of those inside. In his free time Ben enjoys getting involved with cars and motorcycles and has recently decided to take to the sky and learn to fly working towards a lifelong ambition of holding a pilot’s license.

The Wise Why, Jo Shaer talks with Kirsty van den Bulk
Jo Shaer, talks about her journey from lollipop lady to founding a internet marketing and social media agency. Jo like many of us has pivoted to where she is today:
After 12 years working as a PA to executives in the City of London, Jo left to have her own baby. For the next 18 years, Jo was a stay-at-home Mum to two kids who are now old enough to buy her cocktails.
During that time, she also worked as a part-time lollipop lady (school crossing patrol guard), studied internet marketing, and earned a karate black belt. As a lollipop lady, she also helped local business owners across the road. They told her about their problems with their websites and trying to market online. In 2010 Lollipop Local Ltd was born.
The idea was a hi-viz online marketing agency helping local businesses use the internet and social media to get more traffic, leads and customers. Underpinned by the guiding ethos of a black belt lollipop lady... rather than the traditional sharp-suited digital marketers. The first retainer customer was a Fire & Security company whose sales director Jo had met through karate.
By 2018, Lollipop was a seven-person agency, but it was spinning its wheels. In a hugely competitive market, it was hard to grow. Jo invested big in training from experts. Just like she had when she wanted to get her karate black belt at the grand old age of 45. As a member of Perry Marshall's Round Table Europe, the advice was to specialise. So, Lollipop turned its focus exclusively to its core customer base of Fire & Security companies.
All the success, experience and data that had been gathered since 2010 helped to build a Black Belt Sales Framework for Fire & Security Professionals.
And so the adventure really began...

I joined the industry 11 years ago, quite by accident and found a passion for it, particularly for the British manufacturers that stand strong in the global platform.
It is such an unusual industry that people rarely leave; a large family if you like, which has welcomed me with open arms. I am really excited to be invited onto Kirsty’s The Wise Why with a little trepidation. Having studied journalism and then carving a career using those skills I am usually on the other side of the interview, cold-call or conversation so am really interested to see where we end up.
