I have to say, I am fired up about Gary Gensler's recent Twitter video. He uses a condescending and insulting metaphor along with some cute animation. I'll play the audio for you and then give you my reaction to his comments.
Gary Gensler can't kill crypto, but he can harm American investors and damage American economic leadership in the world.
You need to contact your elected representatives in Washington and tell them to pass the laws. We need to foster development of this technology while simultaneously protecting U.S. investors. We can do both.
I encourage you to go watch Gary Gensler's Twitter video and read some of the 4000 comments; virtually all of them horribly negative against that video and Gary Gensler's behavior. His behavior is bad for America. He's ultimately going to fail. And the sooner Congress puts him in his place, the better for all of us.

A couple of weeks ago, I said that the biggest scam in investing today is ESG (environmental, social, governance), mutual funds and ETFs that invest with a filter so that they only invest in companies that pay attention to ESG values. I said that a lot of people have invested in ESG, and so that's pretty cool, right? You can align your investments with your values. But I also said that that's nothing but a sales pitch. Of the 120 funds that currently have a Triple-A rating for adhering to ESG, the company that awards those ratings is about to announce that they've been wrong.

Today's podcast is eye-opening. It's shocking to know that so many people making six-figure salaries are still living paycheck to paycheck. And it's all because of the cost of living in certain cities.
I see this all the time. People are so focused on following their passions and pursuing certain careers without really considering the financial implications. Sure, it's great to do what you love, but if it's not going to provide you with a comfortable lifestyle, is it really worth it?
I know it's not easy to make career and location decisions based on finances, but it's important to have an honest conversation with yourself and your financial advisor. You need to consider the cost of living in the area you want to live and the compensation you can expect from your chosen career.
I hope you enjoy today's show. Have a great weekend.

A new poll conducted by The Wall Street Journal in collaboration with the University of Chicago found that 56% of Americans believe that a four-year degree is no longer worth the cost. Skepticism is highest among those aged 18 to 34, the target demographic for colleges. The poll also found that only 44% of women, regardless of political affiliation, believe that college is worth it. College enrollment is down by 1.3 million students over the past four years, equating to $60 billion in lost tuition revenue for colleges.

I want to talk to you about Dan Snyder, the owner of the Washington Commanders, and the actions he has taken during his 24-year tenure. From building a fence around the stadium to prevent fans from parking for free, to charging admission fees for fans to attend training camp, to failing to address complaints of misconduct by team officials, it's no wonder why pretty much everyone seems to hate this guy - the league, the other NFL owners, the team's players and staff, and the fans.
Under Snyder's ownership, the team has lost nearly 60% of its games and hasn't won a playoff game in nearly 20 years, yet he's now selling the team for a whopping $6 billion.
It's important to learn from his example and decide what truly matters to you. Is it wealth and success at any cost or integrity and respect? It's up to you to make that call.

The world of cryptocurrency is rapidly evolving, and I'm worried that the United States is getting left behind.
Here in the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) seems more interested in enforcing crypto regulations than fostering innovation. Their proposed rule to effectively ban advisors from recommending or investing client assets in crypto is worrying, and it seems like we're missing out on the potential benefits of this technology.
I urge you to stay informed about the rapidly-evolving world of crypto and make informed decisions about investing in this space. Don't let fear and uncertainty hold you back from the potential opportunities that this technology can offer.

Today, I discuss the Human Cell Atlas and how it is transforming medical research. The Human Genome Project mapped the entire genome, but now the focus is on the 37 trillion cells in the human body. The Human Cell Atlas has identified thousands of cell categories, and researchers plan to have a first draft of the full atlas in just two years. This research has already led to discoveries in cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer, and will ultimately lead to the eradication of disease and extension of healthy life.

We've been talking about retirement security lately, what's going on in France and South Korea, and how this is a global problem. All around the world. We're living longer and producing fewer babies, and that means all over the world, fewer people are working and paying into Social Security and similar government retirement plans. And more people are retired and taking money out. All these programs are going broke.

Yesterday I said here on the podcast that federal banking regulators have been trying to kill crypto companies by denying them access to banks. The FDIC shut down Silvergate and Signature Banks and Silicon Valley Bank, all of which did a lot of business with crypto companies. And the regulators are trying to tell other banks not to do business with crypto companies. Their efforts so far are failing because crypto is a legitimate industry that's operating - for the most part anyway, legally and profitably.
Why wouldn't a bank want to do business with an industry like this? Just because you don't like crypto, what does that have to do with it? That's like saying you won't let tobacco companies or casinos or gun manufacturers have bank accounts just because you don't like what they do either.

Let me ask you a basic, simple, fundamental question. Why are you going to college? Why are you sending your kid to college? Well, it's because getting a college degree helps you prepare for a career, right? And that career pays more money than the careers that are available to people who don't go to college. That's the fundamental thesis, isn't it? Well, let me tell you about the 10 worst paying college majors.

It's Thursday, March 23rd. Yesterday, we talked about the four-day workweek. If you work one day less a week, maybe you can work more years, meaning your body might not get worn out so quickly. And if working fewer days a week lets you stay in the workforce longer, that might be really good for your long-term health. A new study says that if you retire early, you could indeed damage your health.

It's Wednesday, March 22nd. 100 years ago, odds were high that you lived and worked on a farm. That was a 24/7/365 job because, you know, cows and pigs and chickens, they never take the day off. They got to be fed or milked or always cared for and crops always needed tending to every day. The Industrial Revolution gave us the six-day workweek. Sunday was off for religious reasons. Eventually, that led to the five-day workweek. In 1938, Congress created the 40-hour workweek and set overtime pay for anything more than that. That was then. Now there's a movement to a four-day workweek.

It's Wednesday, March 8th. Earlier this week, for a couple of days, I was telling you about the absurdity of the Social Security system, referring to full retirement age, when in fact it has nothing to do with being full at age 66. I said that what the Social Security system needs to do is get rid of the term full. Well, guess what? Four senators have now just introduced legislation that would indeed change the language used by the Social Security Administration. Under their bill, full retirement age would no longer be called full. It will now be called standard benefit. Age 62 would be called the minimum benefit and age 70, the maximum benefit exactly the way it ought to be.

I want you to define the word 'full' for me. What does full mean? Well, I think you would say that full means full. No more; at capacity; topped out. If I ask for a full glass of water, you're going to pour water in that glass until you can't pour any more water into the glass. Right? Full means full. We're done. Well, unfortunately, that word has been incorrectly used by the Social Security Administration, and it is causing millions of Americans to make bad decisions, decisions that they wouldn't make if it weren't for the Social Security Administration's incorrect usage of the word.

My topic is digital innovation and security. It's an invitation only event. Pretty impressive roster of attendees, so I'm excited to be among the speakers doing gigs like this, consulting in the financial services field, focusing on digital assets. It's part of my reinvention of myself. Back in 2021, after 37 years of building and running Edelman Financial, what became the largest advisory firm in the country, my wife Jean and I left the company and we have then found ourselves faced with a question of, well, now what?

It's Tuesday, February 28th. When I ask you a question, when should you start to receive your Social Security benefits? All financial advisors pretty much say the same thing. If you're in good health and you can afford to delay, then delay. Even though you're allowed to start receiving Social Security retirement benefits at age 62, you'll be better off in the long run if you wait until you're 70. You'll end up with 76% more money every month, adjusted for inflation, by waiting. We're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional income over your entire retirement. So if pretty much every advisor says to wait, that's pretty much what every retiree does, right? According to the Federal Reserve, only 10% of retirees wait until age 70 to start receiving Social Security. You got be in a heap of trouble.

A couple of weeks ago I talked with you about how college is becoming free. If you want to hear that bit, the link to it is in today's show notes. Dozens of colleges and universities, as I've told you, are making college free these days for low-income families. A lot of states are now doing that, too, and not just for low-income households, but for middle class families, too. And hundreds of companies are now paying for college for their employees. It's the newest employee benefit. So I said, you really need to rethink your college planning strategy if college is going to be free. Do you still need to save for college? Well, guess what? Thanks to Congress (who loves to give freebies away to voters), yes, saving for college just might still make sense, even if you never have to pay for college, even if your kids never go to college.

It's Friday, February 17th. And today, I want to talk with you about connections. No, not not the touchy feely stuff. And no, not who knows who and who can get stuff done and stuff like that. No, I'm talking literally connections: connectivity--the technical aspect of this, because if you can't connect with the person you're trying to connect with, then nothing happens. Connectivity is everything these days.

It's Thursday, February 16th. We've been talking about scams the past couple of days. Crypto has gotten a lot of criticism lately about scams, even though all the evidence shows you're no more likely to get scammed in crypto than you are in any other asset class. Crooks are crooks. But there's a really interesting story in Forbes - which is the bigger scam: crypto fraud or the lack of transparency at our nation's public pension plans? According to Anessa Santos, public pension funds are the bigger scam. The reason, she says, public plans have been promising all of us that you contribute a portion of your pay to the plan while you're working and you get guaranteed lifetime income throughout your retirement. But that's a lie, she says. And I agree with her.

It's Friday, February 10th. We're living in a digital world these days. No surprise there. It means there's a new threat to our way of life. Cyber-attacks.
Cyber-attacks are growing in number and size. At the World Economic Forum this year, 39% of companies said they have suffered collateral damage from cyber-attacks. 90% of these companies are concerned about future attacks. I don't have to tell you, things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad.

It's Wednesday, February 8th. Yesterday, I talked about the fact that you'll likely need millions of dollars in savings in order to retire in financial comfort. That raised a question from William in Albuquerque. He sent me an email that said the following:
"Ric, no one wants to confront age discrimination. I think it's a potentially huge obstacle to anyone's efforts to achieve financial independence by retirement. I lost my well-paid job at 58 and I went to an unemployment seminar that was sponsored by the state of New Mexico, and the presenter said if you're over 40, getting a new job that is equivalent to the job you just lost is improbable, if not impossible..."

Tom Emmer, a member of Congress, just issued a tweet and he said, "Crypto is here to stay. I will keep advocating for policies that advance crypto innovation and adoption in the US because crypto is more than a financial investment. It's about restoring liberty and choice to individuals". Wow. That's brand new coming from Tom Emmer. And he's not alone. Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of the House, way back in 2019, he said, "I like Bitcoin. I want the government to start using blockchain". That was in 2019 when Kevin McCarthy was not the Speaker of the House. Well, now he is, and he's in a much stronger position to dictate that the government in fact start using blockchain. So when you have these major political leaders embracing and endorsing this asset class, well, you know, things are coming.
And this isn't just a Republican thing. Democrats, too, are highly supportive. Janet Yellen last year called blockchain technology transformative. Maxine Waters, the ranking minority member of the House Financial Services Committee, she said last summer, "We're in a new digital assets space race. America can't be left behind". And Elizabeth Warren last year said, "Let's do a central bank digital currency. Yes, I think it's time".

It's Tuesday, January 31st. Guess what? ETFs have now hit their 30th anniversary. The first exchange traded fund was the Spyder S&P 500 ETF Trust, and for the first time ever, investors could buy and sell the 500 stocks of the S&P 500 in a single trade. Today, that ETF has $370 billion in assets. It's still the largest ETF in the world. ETFs have become the most popular investment vehicle in the country. There are now nearly 2000 ETFs on the market from hundreds of fund companies. ETFs are now far more popular than mutual funds, which have been around for 100 years.

I said that by summer of 2025, Bitcoin's price will be around $150,000. That's what, a 7x return in the next two and a half years? Why on earth would I make such an audacious prediction? Well, that's what I'm going to explain to you right now.

Yesterday, I blasted TIAA over their stupid survey that forced people to decide whether 60-year-olds would live to 76, 82 or 88. And then they said the correct answer is 82, when in fact the real answer is that if you're alive in 2030, you'll probably live to age 100 or beyond. If you want to understand why and you missed my podcast yesterday, just go listen to it. But there's one big nagging question. Do you really want to live to age 100?

It's Monday, January 23rd. Tomorrow at noon eastern time, I'm presenting a 90-minute webinar for the Museum of American Finance and the New York Public Library. The webinar's on Financial Planning in the Age of Longevity. The webinar is open to the public and you can register for free in the show notes below.
Some 63% of Americans say that inflation pushed them off track financially. 59% are living paycheck to paycheck. 60% say they can't pay an unexpected expense of $500. 54% have reduced the amount that they're putting into their retirement accounts because of inflation. And 43% say they've withdrawn money from their retirement accounts to pay their bills. And you do have an explanation for this, don't you? Well, we all know the tremendous pressure that the economic environment has placed us under in 2022 because inflation was near double digits - 8.7% Social Security increases based on the rate of inflation. And we know that the stock market had a terrible year, the bond market had a terrible year, crypto had a terrible year. So between the fact that your expenses were radically rising at the very moment that your assets were fundamentally falling, we're now discovering ourselves with layoff after layoff after layoff.

Today I want to talk about experiential technologies - not exponential - experiential. Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the Metaverse: these breakthrough technologies are helping businesses and consumers function more efficiently. And all of this is going to transform the way we shop, the way we play travel, drive, learn, conduct business, even how we make new scientific discoveries. Some of this will be stuff you've either never heard of or don't understand. Things like the Metaverse or IoT, the Internet of Things. But you certainly know about robotics and AI and e-commerce. There's also cloud computing data centers, cell towers, video games, EA Sports, all of these are part of experiential technologies and they're changing everything about how we work and also about our leisure.

It's January 18th. Yesterday I told you that real estate prices are going to fall this year by a lot - 10% or 20% or more in some markets. I've gotten a lot of questions asking me why I said that. Well, here's why. It's all about home affordability. You can't buy a house unless you can afford to buy a house. I mean, you might not be able to afford a candy bar, but no one stops you from buying it. If you don't have cash in your pocket, you just use a credit card. But if you want to buy a house, you need tens of thousands of dollars in cash just for the down payment. And then you've got to qualify for the mortgage.
So here are the numbers. If you want to buy the average US home today based on today's mortgage rates, the average household in America would spend 30% of their income on their mortgage. Can the average household afford that? Zillow calls the situation bleak.

It's Tuesday, January 17th. Do you remember what I told you to do one year ago? Yeah, you don't remember. But I do. Because I was right. I told you one year ago to get out of bonds. I sure hope you did. The Federal Reserve, as you know, raised interest rates more quickly last year than at any time since the 1980s. And the result was that bonds ended up having their worst year ever. Yeah. 10 year Treasuries lost more money last year than in any year since 1788. Treasuries, in fact, not only lost a lot of money last year, they lost a lot of money the year before that. Two years in a row, the bond market fell in value. The last time that happened was 1959.
Bitcoin can recover; your bonds can't.

Today is Friday, January 13. On today's show - The FDA has just approved a new drug called Leqembi. If you have early symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease, it can slow the cognitive decline. However, the cost makes it prohibitive for most people - at $26,000 per year! And to make matters worse, Medicare won't pay for it. This is bad news for the estimated six million people in the U.S. suffering from the disease.

It's Wednesday, January 11. I talked with you yesterday about Social Security. This is the real crisis that America's retirees are facing. Let me shift the conversation back a few generations to, not today's seniors, but to today's high school students, those who are aspiring to go to college. According to a new survey, 77% of households say college is difficult to afford. Three out of four families say they can't afford college. Half of them say it's not affordable at all.
These days, you pay a ton of money to go to school. You're getting suckered into bad deals that are promoted by the school so they can earn even more money off of you than merely the tuition you're paying.

It's Tuesday, January 10. On today's show: the gap between what Social Security was MEANT to provide when it was created and how it's actually being used today. When Social Security was created, there were a lot of workers and not a lot of retirees because life expectancy was so low - we're just not dying at 65 anymore like we are supposed to!
Take a look at your current S.S. statement and what your benefit is supposed to be, and cut that number by 25%. The truth about your future is that in 10 years, that will be your reality if Congress doesn't act now.

Today is Monday, January 9th. Welcome to The Truth About Your Future. I'm going to share with you a couple of very personal stories today. One of them horribly serious, the other one a little bit lighter, although still highly annoying, but with importance - both of these messages and lessons for all of us. You know, it's so often people, when they go through a personal medical experience, they share that story with an admonition: Don't let this happen to you... Be forewarned… Here's how you can avoid it…Here's what I wish I knew… that kind of thing… and those kinds of stories always kind of annoyed me because I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, sure. Well, I'm about to share a couple of those stories with you and with the hope that there will be a lesson learned for you. It certainly has been lessons learned for Jean and me for the past several days.

It's Friday, January 6th. Welcome to the podcast. Long show, big show today. Really excited. A great interview with Dr. Ken Dychtwald, one of the world's leading experts on aging.
Before we get into it, though, I want to talk about a new report that has been produced by Global X ETFs. It's their outlook for 2023 and beyond. It's a special report that they published in coordination with the Wall Street Journal. And I'm going to be talking with you about this report over many, many weeks, because it's got a huge amount of fabulous content and it's all in the subject of exponential technologies, also called thematic investing. And I just want to share with you one snippet from Global X's outlook for 2023. Personalized medicine. You know, I'm a really big fan of exponential technologies. I created an Exponential Technologies ETF myself years ago, and my last book, The Truth about Your Future, was all about exponential technologies.
My personal portfolio is significantly overweighted in exponential technologies, and I am firmly believing that you should have 20 to 30% of your equity portfolio in exponential technologies. And the first one I want to focus on with you is personalized medicine. This is one of the most important new waves of technology. It's literally going to change and extend your life.

Yes, inflation hit a 4-decade high in 2022, the cost of goods and energy is up globally, and half of economists say a recession is in our future. According to the IMF, 2023 will be the worst year for the global economy since 2001. But investors and advisors need to keep this fundamental truth in mind: there’s a huge difference between the stock market and the economy. You need to know the key indicators and not get overly pessimistic – there are opportunities here.

FTX, the world's second largest crypto exchange, has announced that the company is broke, that they aren't able to handle withdrawal requests from their crypto exchange platform. Now you've probably heard of FTX. FTX slapped their logo on the uniforms of umpires in the World Series. They bought the naming rights to the stadium where the Miami Heat plays – they paid $212 million for that. The founder and CEO of FTX is Sam Bankman-Fried – 32 years old and worth $32 billion, at least until this week. And he not only was on the cover of Time Magazine, but he just recently contributed $39 million to Democrat Political Action Committees, making himself one of the largest political contributors in the country. Now, we need to unwind all of this and talk about what it means for crypto – the impact on Bitcoin and other digital assets.

On today’s show: Tax loss harvesting, the benefits of ETFs, pension funds and real estate, and this week's health and wellness segment by my wife, Jean Edelman. I also interview Invesco’s John Frank, Head of ETF Specialists, and Nick Kalivas, Head Factor & Core Equity Product Strategy.
Ask Ric a question on his show.
Recently you heard me talk about the president's student loan proposal, and you know that I strongly oppose the president's debt forgiveness plan. But all that said, there's no question that too many people owe too much money to student loans, and this dilemma is creating too much of a burden on them, as well as on our society overall, and our economy. So there's no question we do need to fix this situation. We do need to take action. But the loan forgiveness program proposed by the president isn't the right way to go about it; loan forgiveness should be offered, but for far fewer people, not 43 million who earn as much as a quarter of a million dollars each year.
I'm really excited to bring on a very special guest to the program, my good friend Bob Pisani. You know him well. He's the senior markets correspondent for CNBC and he's just written a brand new book, Shut Up And Keep Talking: Lessons on Life and Investing from the Floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The book is out October 18. You can buy it right now on Amazon or your favorite bookseller.
One of the things that we all kind of face with hesitation is our retirement. I mean, sure, we're going to age. We're going to eventually leave our job. It might be voluntary. On the other hand, it may be forced. Either way, we're facing one of the most radical lifestyle changes of our entire lives. I mean, think back to the last time you had such a radical change in lifestyle. Getting married certainly was one. Moving to a new home - that's a biggie. Having children - for sure. Getting a new job - that was a big one. But when's the last time any of those happened? Maybe decades ago. Well, now you're on the cusp of facing another lifestyle change: leaving your employment. And some folks enter this with the attitude of saying, my goodness, the best years of my life are behind me. I'm looking at a void. I'm looking at loss. What does this mean for my future? Is life over? And what am I going to be facing? Well, I've got two stories for you to demonstrate that life is just beginning as you age.

We've seen an incredible array of disarray in the financial markets on a global basis. The U.S. dollar is very, very strong right now, meaning the dollar is worth a lot more than other currencies around the world. That's really good news for the U.S., but it's really bad news for everybody else.
Members of Congress -- 18% of them are engaging in insider trading, according to research from The New York Times. 183 senators or representatives did a stock trade in the past three years, and more than half of them sat on committees that gave them insight into the companies whose shares they bought or sold.
In Jean's segment, she talks about the value of time and how to cherish and protect it.

Coming up on the show today: What is the merge in crypto, a look at the impact of the world's energy crisis, your favorite automaker is now making NFTs, the mainstreaming of crypto, a new low cost MRI - it's a game changer - plus, our health and wellness segment with my wife, Jean Edelman.
It is The Truth About Your Future, and one of the biggest truths we're all dealing with these days is the cost of electricity. This is a global crisis, particularly in Europe, where the cost of electricity is up 10X from a year ago. No, not 10% - 10X - which means what used to cost $10 is now $100. People who used to be spending $100 a month on their energy bill are now paying $1,000. The European Commission is trying to solve this dilemma. Energy prices are based on oil and natural gas prices, and we don't have enough oil or natural gas flowing into Europe, and it's all because of the war. The Russian government has shut down the oil pipeline there, strictly reducing the amount of natural gas that they're allowing to flow into Europe. And what they are providing, they're selling for too high a price. The CEO of Shell says Europe is going to have to ration energy for years to come. This is a huge issue, way more expensive than the decade long average in line with a 14 fold increase in the cost of gasoline.
And the irony of all this - the horrifying part - is that Moscow is now making more money from oil than it did before the war. Russia's pumping almost as much oil as before and selling it for higher prices. Who are the buyers? Pakistan, India, and China predominantly. Russia has earned $20 billion a month this year selling its oil versus $15 billion before the war started. And they've got new markets: the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, the UAE, and Egypt. They're all buying in addition to India, Pakistan, China, and Turkey. India, in fact, is now Russia's biggest customer. Russian exporters are often labeling their oil as coming from Iran or Venezuela to fool buyers who really don't want to support Russian oil exports. It's becoming a really big problem, and it's contributed to the fact that the Euro has fallen 15% in the past year. It fell to a 20 year low in August, and now investors are saying it's going to fall in value even more. Most contracts in the options market are against the Euro than at any time since the start of the pandemic back in March of 2020. In other words, most investors are betting that the Euro is going to fall even further than where it is now. And this is all because of the energy problem, which is sharply contributing to the inflation problem in Europe - the Euro inflation is running at 9%. So what are the countries around the world trying to do about it?
Guess who has launched an NFT collection? The car company Kia. They've launched 10,100 NFTs, and they're not the only car company to have done that. Lamborghini, Mercedes, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Porsche, Bentley - all of them have launched NFTs. At Alfa Romeo, if you buy a car, you get an NFT. It records the vehicle's data and serves as proof that you've maintained the car properly, which improves its value.
I mentioned on a previous program that one of the most popular investment products out in the marketplace today are annuities. They've hit a new record - $74 billion have been invested in these things in just the last three months. Why are so many people throwing so much money at annuities? Well, it's pretty obvious, isn't it? Annuities offer a guaranteed return. Compare that to the stock market, which not only isn't guaranteed, has been losing double digits this year. Bonds are down double digits this year. Crypto is down double digits this year. Real estate is beginning to fall in value. So increasingly, investors want a safe guaranteed return and they're turning to annuities to get them.

On today’s show: Single stock ETFs, new scams you need to be aware of, a conversation on what kind of life insurance you need with Todd Hillstead, executive director of financial planning at Edelman Financial Engines, and this week's health and wellness segment by my wife, Jean Edelman. I also interview Jenny Johnson, President and CEO of Franklin Templeton, on the company’s focus on innovation and digital assets.
Ask Ric a question on his show.
On this week's show: A look at today's markets, the latest on CBDCs in the U.S. and around the world, ways you can invest in innovation, understanding the term duration and why you need to care about it, and Jean's word of the week. Also, I'll discuss the question, Is college really worth it? You've seen the letters QQQ in ads -- I'll talk to Ryan McCormack from Invesco -- their flagship ETF is Invesco QQQ.
Let's get started with where we all are and the turmoil you've been experiencing personally and observing in the economy. There's one segment that is doing incredibly well -- very, very strong -- the U.S. dollar. When we compare the value of the U.S. dollar to other currencies around the world, we discover that our dollar is going up in value and other countries' currencies are going down in value. Well, is that a big deal? Isn't that good news? Well, not necessarily. Johnson & Johnson just reported that its profits are going down because the dollar is going up. The company says it generates half of its sales outside the U.S., so think about this: if you live in Europe, and you want to buy a product from J&J, you have to use your Euro to buy something that is manufactured in dollars. So the lower your Euro, the more of them you have to spend. In other words, you've got a big price increase for Johnson & Johnson products, even without inflation. J&J says that the strong dollar is costing the company $4 billion in sales. Microsoft and IBM are saying the same thing. A dollar, so far this year, is up 12%, so a strong dollar is actually bad news for American businesses trying to sell overseas.

On today's show: How universities are saving money at the expense of students, the latest on municipal bonds, the college dropout rate, NFTs and the metaverse, the growth of CBDCs, and this week's health and wellness segment by my wife, Jean. You know, I'm a big critic of college and the college cost, and the challenge of getting our students the education they need at a price that they can afford. Now we've got new data from the Chronicle of Higher Education: a third of college students are thinking of dropping out. Faculty say a third of their students are absent from class or not participating when they're there. 76% of students say they're suffering emotional stress. That's the reason they're talking about dropping out of school. The rest say the coursework is simply too difficult. If you've got a student in college, you need to talk to them about their attitude about college. Are they thinking of dropping out? That could be $50,000 down the drain for you if they've done so. Universities, meanwhile, are trying to save money, lowering the cost of attending college; hundreds of schools, including Vanderbilt, Berkeley, and USC, they're now hiring companies to create and teach classes without the students knowing that they've been outsourced. These online education companies use .edu email addresses of the universities to recruit students into their courses. They also get phone numbers with university area codes. Are you sure that the tuition dollars you're paying are resulting in your student getting taught on campus by an actual member of the university faculty? Or are you being bamboozled? You need to talk with that university and that college to make sure you really understand who's teaching what to your child.

We all know the mess the world is in, so we're going to change it up this week and we're going to talk about the fact that the world's going digital. That includes the music industry and major retailers. DJ Justin Blau has teamed up with an electronic musician who goes by the name of Diplo. They created a song and sold 20% of the streaming royalties to fans via NFTs. Snoop Dogg sold an NFT attached to his latest album and generated $40 million in sales in five days. DJ Steve Aoki says he's made more money selling NFTs than he did from ten years of selling records. And at Universal and Sony, they paid $500 million to buy Bob Dylan's songbook. And just as I predicted they were going to do: They are now getting ready to sell Bob Dylan NFTs. Spotify is going to add blockchain technology and NFTs to its streaming service to boost artists earnings.

There's more to talk about in the world of personal finance and the five subjects that matter most than merely what the markets did this week. 65% of all the people in the United States are in families that own a home. Home prices are now at an all time high, up 15% from last year. The median home price is now $375,000, meaning half of all the houses cost more. Half of them cost less. Homeowners in the last two years have gained $6 trillion in new wealth because of the increased equity in your house. The average homeowner over the past two years now has an extra $67,000 in new home equity that's available to you. You get a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit. You've got $67,000 at your fingertips that you can use for whatever you want to use it for. But at the same time, mortgage rates are now at 5% and rising. They're rising, in fact, at the fastest pace in 35 years. Mortgage rates a year ago were 3%. And as a result of all this, a quarter of homebuyers today are now paying cash. That's the highest percentage of homebuyers ever.

I mean, how can you not talk about investing if it's a show about personal finance? So, in your efforts to pay attention to the long term, in your efforts to stay focused on what really matters, we've got to recognize that it is sometimes a little treacherous. We need to protect ourselves and our efforts to achieve wealth. And that means protecting ourselves from fraud and abuse.

You're listening to The Truth About Your Future. I'm getting a lot of questions from folks, a lot of emails over the past several weeks pertaining to the war in Ukraine wondering, gee, the Russian stock market is closed. This occurred because the economic sanctions caused Russian stock prices to fall 40% in value, and then Putin shut down the exchanges. The financial markets are closed in Russia because of the economic crisis that the war has created, not just in Ukraine, of course, but also, in fact, in Moscow. And it has led to some folks writing to me asking Ric, could that ever happen here? Could our stock market ever close?
