Shawn breaks down the beginning of Paul's ministry, where his new found life change comes into conflict with those from his past life - both who he persecuted with and who he had persecuted. In Acts 9:23-31, we find four central takeaways from Paul interactions:

  1. God can truly reach anyone, and he could use any single person to do His will.
  2. Who could you be overlooking in your circle?
  3. Because of the radical forgiveness that Jesus offered on the cross to us, we are called to radically forgive others as well.
  4. Whenever we are so in line with the mission of God, and submitting to the will of the Spirit, suddenly it is irrelevant how big the challenges we face are.

One of the major turning points of the book of Acts and the formation of the Church is the conversion of Saul. Saul was a Jewish leader during the days of the early Church, and was one of the main persecutors of those who practiced the Way. On the road to Damascus, Saul was met by the risen Jesus and had his life turned upside down. Saul would go on to plant many churches and write letters that would end up becoming books of the Bible. Most know him by his Greek name Paul, Saul is a key figure in the Acts story. Jim Karch details out how the conversion of Saul and his transformation as a disciple of Jesus is ultimately a story of control. If we are truly going to follow after Jesus with our whole being, we must wrestle with the areas of our lives where we do not want to release control. Jim gives challenges and tools to embrace that lifelong journey, as well as showing Paul's own progression in his writings.

Looking at the oldest four-part classic spiritual formation path developed by John Climacus in the 6th Century, Jim discusses how the stages of awakening, purgation, illumination, and union ultimately lead us to the salvation that Paul found in Jesus - eternal life that is built upon restoring our union with God. Where is God calling you to release control as you step deeper into his grace, love, and the life he has for you?

The Holy Spirit continues his incredible work in the Book of Acts by directing Philip into a Gospel centric conversation in Acts 8:26-40. Philip, who was ready for the Spirit's movement, acted upon the Spirit's prompting and was able to share the good news with an Ethiopian Eunuch.

In the Jesus following journey, God is going to place people in your life for Gospel conversations, meaning we need to develop a posture of openness and readiness to speak the Gospel when called upon. There are certain habits - individually, in your selected community, and corporately that you can do to train and equip yourself when called upon by the Spirit. The question is - are you open to that?

Following the stoning of Stephen, the Church begins to scatter from Jerusalem into Judea and Samaria, as Jesus foretold in Acts 1. Through this passage, we will see that often times, it takes getting a little bit uncomfortable in order for followers of Jesus to do what God wants them to do. Until that point, the Gospel had not spread past the walls of Jerusalem. Each of us as followers of Jesus are called to "scatter" and to influence others for the sake of the Gospel.

Diving into Acts 2:42-47, Josh teaches on how the Early Church embodied what it meant to be an irresistible community for the sake of others. Acts 2:42-47 tends to be the 'go to' passage when it comes to how the Church should function, as it describes in many ways how the Church should reflect God's love onto one another. Although the Church still had plenty of issues, it was through their devotion to teaching and fellowship and their unity in love for God and one another that made the Church irresistible to the world around them.

Just as Jesus told His disciples, the world would know we follow Him by our love for one another. As we seek to be the Church God called us to be, we must seek first the Kingdom through personal and communal discipleship, and out of that overflow, let our love spill out to the world around us.

In Week 2 of our Acts study, Noah Wilson teaches on the Coming of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. What may seem odd and foreign to us today was just the beginning of the incredible story God would tell through the work of the Holy Spirit in His Church. As Spirit-Filled Followers of Jesus, the world will be amazed and perplexed by the Spirit as he works to restore creation back to its natural order.

Kicking off the study of Acts, we get a brief glimpse of Jesus' final days on earth. Although he was going to leave, Jesus was confident that the future of the Church was in good hands, because the Spirit was about to take center stage. Josh teaches on the three key markers of the Early Church that Jesus was commissioning out in Acts 1:1-11

  1. Irresistible community for the sake of others
  2. Dangerous witnesses through word and action
  3. Spirit filled followers of Jesus.

As Apprentices of Jesus, we are called to abide in the True Vine, and through deep relationship with Him, the Spirit will lead us into being the Future Church that our world desperately needs.
