In this episode, host Paul Rechberger sits down with Dr. Stefan Grimberg who is a Professor and the Co-Director of the Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions at Clarkson University. His research involves biological water and wastewater treatment processes, renewable energy generation through anaerobic digestion, and biological fate of organic pollutants in the environment. He is also the leading individual in operating Clarkson’s anaerobic digester.
Dr. Grimberg received his Chemical Engineering Diplomingenieur from the technical university in Munich before getting his Master’s and Doctorate’s in Environmental Science and Engineering from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
In this conversation, we will talk about water, water quality, food waste, anaerobic digestion, and the economics of biogas, small and large scale.

In this episode, host Paul Rechberger sits down with Alex French who is the Assistant Director for Sustainability at Clarkson University. He is responsible for not just environmental but also social engagements on campus. Alex is one of the main contributors in guiding Clarkson University towards its goal of reaching net-carbon zero by 2025. Additionally, he is engaged in food system issues around campus and St. Lawrence County. In his spare time, Alex enjoys being outdoors and he also is part of a community garden in the region. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s in Anthropology from SUNY Potsdam and an Environmental Policy Masters from Clarkson University.
In this conversation, we talk about the initiatives on Clarkson University’s campus, food waste, composting, and current food system challenges, especially in rural areas.

In this episode, host Paul Rechberger sits down with Ken Ilgunas, an award-winning author, journalist, and backcountry ranger in Alaska. He has hitchhiked ten thousand miles across North America, paddled one thousand miles across Ontario in a birchbark canoe, and walked 1,700 miles across the Great Plains, following the proposed route of the Keystone XL pipeline. Ken has a BA from SUNY Buffalo in history and English, and an MA in liberal studies from Duke University. The author of travel memoirs Walden on Wheels and Trespassing Across America, he is from Wheatfield, New York.

In this episode, host Paul Rechberger sits down with Dr. Susan Powers, the Director of the Institute for a Sustainable Environment and the Associate Director of Sustainability at Clarkson University. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Clarkson university and her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan.
She has served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, the EPA Science Advisory Board, and on the board of the Engineering Research Council of the American Society of Engineering Education.
Dr. Powers is an expert in life cycle assessments of energy systems to provide perspectives on their overall environmental impact. Her current research is especially focused on defining and quantifying metrics that can be used to assess the environmental benefits and liabilities associated with energy systems.
In this conversation, we talk about her trip to the COP26 in Scotland, Corporate environmental responsibility, education, waste management, individual climate impact, and an environmental outlook.
