Is your teen struggling with anxiety, but every step you take to help only seems to push them further away?
Supporting an anxious teenager can be exhausting and overwhelming, leaving you unsure whether you’re saying the right thing. Licensed clinical social worker Sophia Vale Galano has spent more than a decade helping teenagers and their families navigate anxiety, and she's learned that one of the most powerful ways parents can support their teens isn't by becoming perfect, but by being present.
As Benoit Harpey continues his conversation with her, Sophia explains the crucial role parents play in building an environment where teens grow. She shares practical strategies that strengthen relationships without adding more pressure; from managing your own stress to modeling healthy boundaries, choosing the right therapist, and building empathy.

Whether your teenager struggles with anxiety or you're simply trying to build a healthier relationship, this conversation offers practical encouragement to help you support your teen while caring for yourself along the way.

Maybe your teenager has opened up about feeling anxious, but the conversation seems to end in frustration every time you try to help. Or, maybe they don't talk about it at all, which keeps you up at night worrying about their wellbeing.
Sophia Vale Galano has spent more than a decade helping teenagers and their families navigate anxiety in school, hospital, and private settings. Through her work, she's learned that helping an anxious teenager isn't about caring more, but about approaching the conversation differently. In this episode, Sophia shares the real insights her experience has revealed.
In the first half of our conversation with Sophia, she and Benoit Harpey explore why teens often struggle to communicate their anxiety, how parents can recognize hidden signs, and what it takes to build the kind of trust that encourages honest conversations. Instead of immediately trying to fix the problem, Sophia explains how curiosity, validation, and patience can help parents become a safe place for their teenagers.

Whether your teen struggles with anxiety or you're simply trying to strengthen your relationship, this conversation provides practical guidance to help you become someone your teen feels safe turning to.

Most parents feel like they’re constantly correcting and disciplining their teens, yet their behavior never seems to change. If every conversation turns into an argument, or it feels like you're losing your relationship with your teen, this episode offers a practical approach to rebuilding that could change the way you parent.
Last episode, we started our conversation with Dr. Will Dobud, who explained how we can reach our teens when nothing seems to work. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience working with struggling teens and their families, Will shares real-life expertise on seeking connection over correction. Throughout his career, Will has learned that kids don’t change when adults become stricter, but when relationships give them the space and confidence they need to grow.
In this episode, Benoit Harpey and Amina Elsamahy sit down with Will for a conversation that challenges traditional techniques for parenting teenagers. Instead of relying primarily on correction and consequences, Will takes a different approach that builds trust while maintaining healthy boundaries. We explore real strategies that help teens feel safe, respected, and motivated to grow.

Maybe you’ve tried therapy, but your kid goes, barely says a word, and quits after the second session.
Dr. Will Dobud has spent two decades working with families who had been in that situation. In wilderness programs, clinical settings, and remote Indigenous communities in Australia, Will has been working with teens who everyone else considered lost causes. He was that kid, kicked out of boarding schools and taken to see many therapists, none of whom helped. His experience led him to search for a real solution, which he shares with us today.
In this episode, Benoit Harpey and Amina Elsamahy sit down with Will for a conversation that discusses the practical solution to teen difficulties. He helps us understand what kids actually need.

In Part 2: We’ll discuss strategies you can apply at home now, including setting proper boundaries, avoiding potentially harmful over protection, and tools to help you along the way.

“How can I help my kids manage stress and pressure in youth sports?” “How can I encourage my kids without adding undue pressure?” — Two weeks ago, we heard Harvey Araton’s expertise on character building through youth sports and the pressures and stresses that often come out of it. In part two of Benoit Harpey and Kayla Richerson’s conversation with him, Harvey walks us through practical ways to take the pressure and stress off our kids’ shoulders. He reminds us that sports build character and are ultimately meant for fun—not just for full-ride college scholarships. He shares applicable advice on how, in our own lives, we can keep our eyes on the goal of the game and ensure our kids enjoy it every step of the way. If you’re a sports-parent veteran or just getting into the game, tune in to relieve your own stresses—and those of your children.

“How to reduce pressure on young athletes?” “How can I support my kids in youth sports?” “How do sports shape character in kids?” — Kids worldwide engage in team sports, and for years it has brought joy to the players. Recently, though, the commercialization of youth sports, as well as motivations beyond character building and fun, have placed undue pressure on young athletes. This unhealthy pressure leads to stress, overwhelm, and tension. In part one of Benoit Harpey and Kayla Richerson’s conversation with Harvey Araton—New York Times columnist and sports journalist, author, and father—we learn about the true goal of team sports, which lies in character building. Harvey shares his own story; explains how budget constraints, scholarship goals, and sports commercialization take away from the joy; and provides applicable advice for avoiding these negative effects. Together, we dive into the true purpose of youth sports, how to cultivate growth, and how to make the most of what kids really love.

“How to help my child heal from trauma?” “What are some trauma-informed parenting techniques?” “What are ways to help children cope with trauma?” — The toll that trauma takes on a child extends far beneath the surface. Trauma impacts perceived identity, self-worth, and hinders joy. Today, Benoit Harpey speaks with Tiffany Tyler, the founder of the Grace Epic Center. Tiffany experienced abuse as a child, and the silence around her trauma shaped her identity. She found healing through dance, faith, and expression, and now helps others overcome trauma in the same ways. Tiffany shares the effects of trauma, explains why behavior is often misunderstood, and gives practical advice for supporting healing. It takes consistency, validation, openness, encouragement, and expression. Tiffany shares incredible advice, gives us hope that trauma can be healed, and illustrates how we can help our children go from surviving to thriving.

“Why does it feel like we aren’t healing?” “What actually works for healing trauma?” “Is my child’s trauma un-solvable?” — Two weeks ago, we heard Marcia Earhart’s story through adoption, parenting, loss, and healing from trauma. Today, Benoit Harpey and Brooke Lowry dive deeper in their conversation with Marcia, a trauma coach and mother, as they discuss how to practically parent through trauma to foster healing. Parenting through trauma, grief, and behavioral challenges can feel overwhelming, stagnant, and like a lost cause, but Marcia explains why it isn’t. Marcia expands on the truth of trauma being something that happened, not who a child is; highlights the importance of consistency and routine in a child’s life; and explains the importance of the right support system (and where to find it). She tells us that we will feel tired, overwhelmed, and hopeless, but that progress will come—we just have to keep on moving. If you’re stretched, discouraged, or unsure how to help your child heal from trauma, this episode is for you. Healing is still possible, no matter how hopeless it seems. Take the first step by tuning in today.

“What is RAD?” “How does trauma affect my children?” “What can I do to best support my family without getting burnt out?” — Even in the darkest of storms, the blue sky remains behind the clouds. Traumatic experiences come and go, but what remains is an identity forged through the trials. Today, Benoit Harpey and Brooke Lowry sit down with Marcia Earhart, a grief-counselor, a trauma coach, and co-founder of the Sterling Rose Sanctuary—but most importantly, a mother. While her story is full of challenges and pain, her blue sky remains. So does yours. Marcia now serves others, helping them overcome trauma in their own families. In this episode, she tells her story of conquering trauma in her family; explains what Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) is, and how it affects people; shares practical strategies for building trust and connection despite trauma; and reminds us that no matter how hard it gets, we will get through it. Trauma is not the end of the story for you, and you will overcome it. This episode could be your first step towards healing, and we’d love to be by your side on this journey. Tune in for practical advice, lived experience, and a heart postured in love towards you and your family.
This is part one of our conversation with Marcia. In part two, we’ll dive deeper into trauma and the strategies for overcoming it. We’ll also continue exploring the idea of identity through trauma, and how your struggles don’t define you.

“How can I help my teen get through self-harm and suicidal behavior?” “Am I harming my teen when I’m trying to help?” “Is healing actually possible?” — The pain, fear, and hopelessness you feel when your teens act out, shut down, or self harm is real. This behavior, though, isn’t manipulative or defiant; it’s survival. Today, Kayla Richerson sits down with Katie K. May, a therapist, speaker, and the bestselling author of You’re on Fire, It’s Fine. Katie explains to us that when our teens express big emotions or behave irrationally, it’s because they feel like they’re on fire, and they’re trying to extinguish it. She tells us that the way to extinguish the fire isn’t always hospitalization; it’s often validation, understanding, and self-regulation. If you struggle with your teen’s behavior, or fear that one day you will, this episode is for you. “My foster child’s biological parents are incarcerated; how can I guide them through this difficult time?” “My child’s guard is up after trauma, how can I help take the walls down?” “How can I help a child transition out of Department of Juvenile Justice custody?” — When a child is in DJJ custody, they’re locked up, isolated, and scared. They aren’t just going through legal trouble, they’re carrying trauma and shame. It takes resilience, hope, support, and love to break free of the trauma they’ve faced. When Josie Mae was in her teens, her parents felt called to step into the role of foster parenting and on a fateful night in 2017 got a call that there were twin sisters who needed a home. The family faced many challenges as they were raising these two little girls, but they powered through all of them and the twins are now thriving! Josie Mae shares her family’s story as kinship caregivers, how her scenario revealed her vocation, tips that helped them, and how community and support played a vital role in their success in raising vulnerable youth.
This is only part one of Josie Mae’s story and advice; in part two, we’ll reflect on lessons Josie Mae learned while helping raise her sisters, speak more about the importance of a support system, and talk about the role Friends of Foster Children plays in the lives of foster parents.

You’re not alone in your struggles; in fact, today Sophia Mills speaks with Evan Sophir on this very topic. Evan is a top-rated Florida Realtor and TV Host, but also a husband and, more recently, a father. In addition to all this, he is committed to advocating for foster youth and vulnerable children. When his family began to grow, he had to look at all the things going on in his life, and figure out which were most important to him. He shares with us meaningful moments that taught him important lessons about this careful balance, tells us why advocacy has become such an integral part of his work, and leaves us with some extremely valuable tips for creating a balance that works perfectly for you. Whether you’re a foster parent, caregiver, young parent, or just need help balancing your work and life, this episode is perfect for you. Just remember, it isn’t always perfection that counts; often taking the first step is most crucial.

“How can I tell if a child needs legal help?” “Who speaks up for children who can’t speak for themselves?” “What happens when the system fails a child?” – Sadly, the foster care and legal systems are imperfect. Both have countless faults and could be improved a million times over, and yet the kids who are unwillingly thrown around and abused in all of it often cannot speak up for themselves. Thankfully, today Rylie Heck and Sofia Scher sit down with Paul McBride, who shares his story growing up in the foster care system and then becoming a defender of children’s rights.
Paul is a fierce attorney, specializing in wrongful death and sexual assault, both very common in the foster care system, as well as a passionate advocate for youth who face these challenging situations, being a board member both at AMIkids and right here at Speak Up For Kids. He gives his insight on how legal advocacy protects vulnerable children, how families can ensure that their children’s rights are protected, and ways to advocate for children in your community. He also discusses the largest legal challenges faced by youth, and how to find proper and good representation. Despite this broken system, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it all may start through simple, passionate advocacy. Click play to learn countless tips and tricks and receive additional resources. It’s time to bring justice to the voiceless!

It's obtainable and it's a deep desire of her's to remove the scales from the eyes of others (whether through speaking, podcasting, writing, or coaching) so that they can see for themselves that their deep and unspoken desires are obtainable.

In this episode, Sophia Mills speaks with Rebecca Korda, program manager for recruitment and training at the National Youth Advocate Program. Rebecca provides quality services to children and families within the dependency system here in southeast Florida.
Rebecca began her career as a case manager with ChildNet in 2012. She transitioned to working the last 8 years with foster parents and the youth they serve. First, as a treatment coordinator ensuring the children's appointments and needs were monitored. Then, as a licensing specialist monitoring foster parents were in compliance and good standing with DCF regulations. Currently, Rebecca works as a trainer and recruiter actively trying to dispel the myth that it takes "someone special" to be a foster parent. She has learned through professional and personal experience that being a foster parent simply means putting aside your own conveniences at times to ensure the children coming into your home feel welcomed and valued. Rebecca's expertise serves to educate and encourage anyone interested in becoming a foster parent. She also works with foster parents struggling because, per Rebecca's words, "being a foster parent isn't all sunshine and rainbows." There are struggles which require expert guidance. It is important to ensure foster parents and the children in their home are given necessary care and attention from the system of care responsible for their placement.
Rebecca offers personal experience. Many people work in the foster care system but not all of them are also licensed foster parents. Her ability to recruit and assist soon-to-be foster parents comes from a unique place; lived experience. Rebecca's lived experience as a foster parent has improved the way the state mandated curriculum is delivered to people attending foster parent training classes.

In this episode, Rylie Heck and Sofia Scher interview Pam Heck and Brian Heck. They discuss topics surrounding fostering with biological children and how to foster a strong family dynamic.
Brian and Pam met in college and came from completely different backgrounds. Pam was raised in a two parent home. Brian’s parents were divorced when he was just an infant and his mother remarried. He jumped between mom and dad’s house throughout his childhood. Through divine intervention, they ended up at the same college with the same group of friends. Through many years of friendship they married in 2004. They welcomed their daughter, Rylie, to the world in 2007 and their son, Cason in 2011. Pam and Brian both had careers in helping people. Pam was a director of In Home Family Services for Boys Town. She led a team of consultants who worked with families to intervene and to help prevent their children from going into foster care. Brian was a teacher. He worked in a Title 1 school with kids with severe behavior problems that were voted “most likely not to succeed.” Even though they were helping kids, they had a desire to work together and in a different setting. An opportunity arose for them to become family teachers for Boys Town in Tallahassee, Florida. They would be responsible for their two children as well as 6 teenage boys who were in foster care. They had a home setting with their family, while also teaching life skills to be successful in the future. This was an incredible opportunity that will forever impact Brian and Pam as well as Rylie and Cason. They stepped away from family teaching a few years ago in order to focus their time and attention on their biological children.
