This is a new revelation for me.  Yes, we can help our own wellness with good habits, tending to our mental health, and rest, among others.  But when you are drowning in burnout, it is not the time nor the place to be taught how to help yourself.  We need the help of someone else at that point in time to jump in and give us a hand and pull us out so we can rest.  That is what I haven't seen in medicine.  We are missing the people that are supposed to be looking after the medical workers. Why is this?  My direct reports are drowning also.  They can't save anyone if they are barely keeping their head above water.

Late one night, while Rebecca was alone in her New York apartment, her hand was partially amputated in an explosion. Quick thinking saved her life, but the journey to recovery would be a slow one. As doctors rebuilt her hand, Rebecca began rebuilding her sense of self by studying the physical and psychological process of recovery. Interspersing the personal with the medical, Rebecca charts her year of rehabilitation, touching on the marvelously adaptable anatomy of the hand; how the brain's fight-or-flight mechanism enables us to react instantly to danger; and why trauma causes some people to develop PTSD and gives others a whole new lease on life. Told with emotional and intellectual clarity, BEAUTIFUL TRAUMA is a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit and the power we all hold in our hands.

I really think the only reason I got my first job in CT surgery was because I made a very bold statement when the surgeon asked me, "Why should we hire you?"  I said, "Because I don't fail."  I am starting to realize that maybe I am too gritty and should allow some failure into my life...on purpose.  Listen to this episode to see what I mean.

Have you ever read or heard that the answer to burnout is to build your resiliency?  In this episode, I will rebuke this and give a new perspective.  I will also lay the foundation for the next podcasts by defining burnout, the insidious nature of burnout, and a bit about your brain and neuroplasticity.

Everywhere I look, I see more and more people that are completely burned out.  It doesn't matter who you are.  Collectively, our culture of success as defined by money and titles, along with employers that reward and expect long hours, little vacation time, and production over personnel, has led to intelligent, hard working professionals grappling with relationship, health, and productivity issues.  Burnout is insidious and does not happen overnight.  If you are burned out, put this podcast on and breathe.  I will distill the research and information on everything wellbeing and discuss how I integrated these into my busy life.  Take a few minutes just for you and glean a tip that may just be the thing you need to help break out of the cycle of burnout.
