Lesson 16 - The King’s Mission Accomplished, His Commission Delivered
Matthew 27:1—28:20. The promised Messiah stood silent before His accusers. The Suffering Servant fully drained the cup He’d accepted in Gethsemane; and on Calvary’s cross, the true Passover Lamb yielded up His Spirit. Three days later He rose as the Promised King, victorious over death. Then He told His disciples to take everything He had taught them into the world and make disciples everywhere. His authority would empower them, and His presence would sustain them. His mission was accomplished - theirs had just begun.

Lesson 15 - The End Draws Near
Matthew 25:14—26:75. Matthew records many final moments in these last chapters. Final words about Christ’s coming and final calls to faithfulness, a final act of loving devotion, the final Passover meal. He recounts the betrayal of one disciple, the public failure of another and the scattering of all the rest. And for the Lord Himself, there is the final surrender in Gethsemane, accepting the cup of suffering that would result in His death for all mankind. Everything has been made ready. The end truly is in sight.

Lesson 14 - From Hypocrisy to Readiness - The Final Teaching
Matthew 23:1—25:13. Jesus pronounces His final woes on the Pharisees, even releasing them to complete the murderous sins of their fathers. He casts one last heartbreaking look at Jerusalem, weeping for what she had rejected and what awaited her. And then He admonishes His disciples, stunned by His words about the end of the age, to watch and wait. He tells them what to expect and how to handle it, and calls them to be wise, faithful servants. The next few days would put that to the test.

Lesson 13 - The King is Tested
Matthew 21:23 — 22:46. The interrogators lined up like advancing troops — Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, experts in the Law — firing their trick questions and “gotcha” scenarios to trap Jesus in His words and have Him arrested. His answers astounded everyone in their clarity and their authority. No one could offer a word of refutation; and at the end of the day, no one dared ask any more questions. The examination was over. He was who He said He was. The Passover Lamb had been found faultless and was ready to be offered.

Lesson 12 - The King’s Final Journey Begins
Matthew 20:1—21:22. It is the last week of Jesus’ life. For the third time, He tells His disciples of the suffering that awaits Him in Jerusalem, but they remain distracted by thoughts of personal greatness and reward. The crowd welcomes Him with cries of victory, but their expectations of deliverance are misguided. No one yet realizes that the humble King on the donkey is coming in peace to the city and the people who will soon cry for His blood and deliver Him over to the Cross. His final journey has begun.

Lesson 11 - The King’s Teaching - The Upside-Down Kingdom
Matthew 18:1—19:30. Jesus continues to explain the upside-down nature of His Kingdom in this fourth section of His teaching. It is the Kingdom in which humility defines greatness, care for others overrides personal preference, and reconciliation is sought. God’s design is the framework. Forgiveness is extended without limit, and great reward is promised to those who persevere in confident trust. It is the Kingdom open to all who know their need of mercy and who return to the Shepherd who was pursuing them all along.

The King Begins to Reveal Himself - Lesson 10
Matthew 16:1 — 17:27. Things were beginning to come together for the disciples. They finally grasped Christ’s warnings about the teachings of the Pharisees. Peter boldly confessed Christ was the Messiah — but struggled with what that meant. Christ revealed His glory on the Mount of Transfiguration and told the disciples that the path ahead included the horrific reality of the cross — His and theirs. The disciples had come a long way. But Christ’s unexpected revelations indicated they had much further to go.

Lesson 9 - The King’s Patience and Care
Matthew 14:1 — 15:39. The Kingdom education of the disciples continues in the next two chapters of Matthew. They watch their Master grieve the death of the beloved John the Baptist, miraculously feed thousands and then rescue them in a storm. They hear Him denounce the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and yet honor the faith of a persistent Canaanite woman. Whether they realized it or not, every word, every experience was preparing them for the mission that lay ahead — a mission whose challenges were just beginning.

Lesson 8 - Parables About the Kingdom
Matthew 13. As a prism reveals the true nature of the light shining through it, Matthew 13 describes the true nature of the Kingdom. It is like seeds on a path, wheat in a field laced with weeds, a mustard seed and a small measure of yeast, buried treasure, a priceless pearl and a fisherman’s net pulled through the water. It is open to all and ever-expanding — but the enemy’s opposition grows alongside it. Those who would follow Christ must truly hear what He has to say and remain faithful until He returns.

Lesson 7 - The Response to the King
Matthew 11 and 12 contain some of the most comforting and most confrontational words Christ spoke to those who heard Him. While some, like the imprisoned John the Baptist, thought He wasn’t moving fast enough, and needed reassurance — others, like the Pharisees, wanted to shut Him down, openly challenging His authority and ultimately deciding to get rid of Him. But there would be no escaping the truths He clearly and plainly spoke — or the inevitable results of rejecting His offer of salvation.

Lesson 6 - A Kingdom of Power
Matthew 9:18—10:42. Jesus continued to demonstrate that His Kingdom was unlike any other — a Kingdom of power and grace open to all who believe and trust in His mercy. He chose twelve disciples and sent them out in that same power to do the same works He had done, opening their eyes to the great harvest awaiting them. And He warned that the same persecution He was already facing awaited them as well. Theirs was a call to be like Him in all things — even to the cross.

Lesson 5 - A Kingdom of Grace, Mercy and Peace
Matthew 8:1—9:17. After describing His Kingdom in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus began to demonstrate its power. He healed many — among them a leper, the servant of a despised Roman centurion, a paralytic, and two Gentile men tormented by demons. He calmed a violent storm for His disciples and spoke strong words to would-be-followers and offended Pharisees. This, He said, is the Kingdom He came to bring — a new covenant of grace, mercy and peace for all who would receive it.

Lesson 4 - The King’s Teaching Continues: A Revolutionary New Way to Worship
Matthew 6:1—7:29. Jesus continued to reveal what His Kingdom is like. He unmasked the hypocrites and their showy obedience. He spoke of a loving Father who cares about all our needs and then taught us how to pray to Him. He warned against false teachers and how they could be identified. He identified two roads open to His listeners and told of two houses that revealed the choices of their builders. Yes, His Kingdom had come — but who would choose to enter it?

Lesson 3 - The King’s Teaching Begins: A Revolutionary New Way to Live
Matthew 5:1-48. As Moses revealed God’s Law on the mountain of Sinai, Jesus introduced the Kingdom of God and all its blessings on a Galilean hillside. His words brought joy and comfort to the humble and revealed what God really required of those who would truly follow Him. They also exposed the pride and hypocrisy of the religious leaders, a revelation that would only grow in the days ahead and bear its own sorrowful fruit.

Lesson 2 - The King Identified
Matthew 3:1 — 4:25. From the somewhat quiet and hidden birth of the Promised King, Matthew moved immediately into Jesus’ public ministry. He recounted John the Baptist’s call to repentance and baptism. He recorded Christ’s obedience to that call and the thunderous affirmation from Heaven that He was indeed the Son of God. He followed Christ as He was tempted in the wilderness, called His first disciples and preached His message throughout Galilee. Christ was joyfully received by many and fiercely rejected by others from the very beginning. And that division would only grow.

Lesson 1 - Birth of the King
Matthew 1:1—2:23. Everything that Matthew recorded in these first two chapters was designed to make his Jewish readers think. Each prophecy that Christ fulfilled should have been another indication to them that Jesus truly was the promised seed of Abraham, the Messiah, the son of David and hence the Son of God. But it was obvious from the very beginning that Jesus was not the kind of King they thought the Promised One would be — nor would His kingdom. And Matthew was just beginning to show them.

Lesson 10 - The One Who Prepares the Way

Lesson 8 - The One Who Is the Promised Son

The journey begins on the back of a humble donkey and ends in a tense standoff with religious rulers determined to silence Christ at any cost. In between, a blind man receives his sight, a precious friendship is called upon, a fruitless fig tree becomes a lesson in faith, and righteous anger upends the Temple court. The lines are drawn. Lesson 7 - The One Who Is the Good Teacher
Mark 10:1-45. Baited by Pharisees who wanted to arrest Him, questioned by an eager young man who wanted easy answers, and faced with disciples who wanted to realize their own ambitions — Jesus showed Himself to be an incredible teacher. He fearlessly challenged false assumptions. He revealed the true nature of God’s kingdom and set a perfect example for His disciples to follow. But most of all, He told His students the truth. It may have made them uncomfortable — but it also made them what they needed to be.

Lesson 6 - The One Who Came to Suffer
Mark 8:27-9:47. Truly the turning point of Mark’s Gospel, the question Christ posed in Mark 8:29 — “Who do you say I am?” — altered the disciples’ journey. Peter’s glorious confession — “You are the Messiah” — led to the sobering call to follow that Messiah to their own cross of sacrifice and death. Glimpses of glory on the mountain were eclipsed by jealous arguing among the disciples. And they were left to consider Christ’s serious warning that if not dealt with, pride and selfish ambition could ruin many.

Lesson 5 - The One to Bless All the Nations
Mark 7 and 8 are full of challenges. Jesus confronts the Pharisees’ ideas about defilement and uncleanness, drawing attention to the heart instead of outward show. He challenged the disciples’ ideas by taking them into Gentile territory and doing mighty works there — healing a demon-possessed girl, a deaf/mute and a blind man. He fed 4,000 with just a few loaves of bread. And then He called His own hard-of-hearing, not-quite-seeing disciples apart to do the same for them …

Lesson 4 - The One Who Shepherds His People
Mark 6:7-56. Things were speeding up in Christ’s ministry; and the disciples were plunged into a steep learning curve in this week’s lesson. Thankfully, their teacher was called The Good Shepherd, because things got hard very fast. Their first mission went well; but then they were challenged by the needs of a hungry multitude and another violent storm on the sea — this time without their Master in their boat! How would they respond to the lessons they were given? With belief or unbelief?

Lesson 3 - The One Who has the Victory
Mark 4:35 – 6:6. This lesson pictures the complete victory Jesus offers us. He rules over nature, over demons, even over death itself. He is Lord over all. But Mark reminds us it’s also about what do we do with the claims of Christ. We can accept them like Jairus and the woman with the issue of blood, receiving what He promises and more. Or we can reject them like the Gerasenes and the people of Nazareth and miss out on everything. As always, we get to choose.

Lesson 2 - The One Who is Lord of All
Mark 2:13 – 4:25. Mark continues recounting the miracles, the confrontations and the teachings of Jesus as His ministry spreads and grows. The Pharisees move front and center in this lesson, angry at Christ’s association with “sinners” and His total disregard of their rules and traditions, especially regarding the Sabbath. Christ openly challenges their stubbornness and pride, ending with a warning about the need to listen carefully to what He says, because everything hangs in the balance.

Lesson 1 - The One with Authority to Forgive Sins
Mark 1:1-2:12. Mark’s fast-paced Gospel about the life and ministry of Jesus makes a point of recording how people reacted to Him. Some believed His claims. Some doubted. Some even got angry. And that is still true today. Mark’s Gospel will certainly challenge our own understanding of who we believe Jesus is!

Acts 28:17-31. This book has been focused on the acts the Holy Spirit as He worked through the early believers in amazing ways. In a sense though, the book of Acts is still being written through us as we continue to serve the Lord in the power of the Spirit even today!

Lesson 19
Acts 27:13-28:16. On his journey to Rome Paul endured a tempest and a shipwreck. When gathering wood for a much-needed fire, Paul was then bitten by a viper! Even that did not discourage him! He merely shook off the serpent and continued to serve!

Lesson 18
Acts 26:1-27:12. Realizing his limited understanding of the Jewish religion and culture, Festus brought Paul before Herod Agrippa, but after hearing his defense, the bewildered leaders lamented the fact that Paul had appealed to Caesar, as they believed him innocent of the charges.

Lesson 17
Acts 23:30-25:27. Paul spent two years in Roman custody at Caesarea. When Festus was appointed as Governor of Judea, the Jews tried to take advantage of his lack of local knowledge by insisting he return Paul to Jerusalem and so Paul appealed to Caesar, thus sealing his fate!

Lesson 16
Acts 21:31-23:30. As the Prophet Agabus had predicted, upon arriving in Jerusalem Paul was seized by the Jewish authorities and handed over to the Romans, but the Lord stood near Paul and told him to “take courage". God's plan for His Apostle was not yet complete!

Lesson 15
Acts 20:1-21:30. Many feared for his safety and begged Paul not to go up to Jerusalem; but his mind was already made up! It broke his heart to see how distressed they were, yet he was unwilling to disobey God’s command.

Acts 18:12-19:41. Paul faced opposition wherever he went. The silversmiths of Ephesus were angry because of his preaching. As people turned to Christ, they lost their fascination with the goddess Artemis and the silversmiths' business suffered because of it!

Acts 17:1-18:11. Paul was never ashamed of the gospel of Christ. Though he faced hardships frequently, God urged Paul to continue to speak and to not be silent, for He promised to be with him no matter what!

Acts 15:36-16:40. After several unsuccessful attempts at journeying into Asia, Paul and Silas traveled to Philippi. Their ministry there probably looked different to what they had expected, as after delivering a slave girl from demonic possession they ended up beaten and thrown into prison!

Acts 14:8-15:35. It was not long before false teachers began to disrupt the church in Antioch with their doctrine of circumcision teaching that salvation was only for the Jews. The Council of Jerusalem issued a firm decree confirming that salvation is for both Jew and Gentile alike and that it is given by grace, not by the Law.

JUDAS ISCARIOT … FACE OF THE BETRAYER

It has always amazed me that Judas Iscariot followed when others deserted Christ. Lesson 4 - An Example in Perseverance
1 Kings 21:1-28; 1 Kings 19:19-21 and 2 Kings 2:1-15.Elijah was an incredible man of prayer. He knew what it was like to persevere even when he was hated and rejected for his relationship with God. Choosing not to see it as the end of his usefulness to God, he was willing to see God’s bigger picture and humbly invest in the life of his successor, Elisha.
Lesson 3 - When Fear Overwhelms and Depression Sets In
1 Kings 18:40-19:18.
As Christ followers, we know that the extremes of life teach us to trust Him, they draw us closer to Him, and conform us to His likeness. Elijah shows us what to do when those dark moments happen in our lives. God is never going to forget us! In fact, the Lord often uses those valleys to take us on to higher places, if only we will put our trust in Him and obey His Word.

Elijah knew that nothing is impossible for God. In his encounter with the prophets of Baal we learn the truth that all religions are not the same and that enthusiasm and great activity are not always signs of spirituality! The prophets of Baal were no doubt sincere in what they believed, but it is possible to be sincerely wrong! People can have faith, but what truly matters is the object of that faith!

We know nothing about the Prophet Elijah other than he came from the town of Tishbe in Gilead. No one knows about his family or his education, all we do know is that he was rather an odd character! But his life teaches us that God knows how to raise up leaders when they are needed, and that He can use anyone — even a person from absolute obscurity — to do His will!
Lesson 8 - The Way to Life
Luke 7:11-17; Luke 8:40-56; John 11:1-53; Matthew 12:38-41 and 1 Corinthians 15:17-22. No study of miracles would be complete without considering those in which Christ raised people to life. Lesson 3 - The Way to Sight
John 9:1-38, Mark 10:46-52, Mark 8:22-26 and Isaiah 42:16. As we look at three different people who received sight from Jesus we realize that their stories picture our own lives. The Bible says we are all lost in a spiritual darkness that invades every part of our being. We cannot heal our blindness — only God can do that — and the cure is still the same. Lesson 15
As we study Revelation 19:11-20:15 we realize the first time Christ came to earth He arrived riding a donkey, which in those days was a sign of a king who came in peace. This time it is very different as He arrives riding a white horse as a picture of a conquering King coming in victory. John notices the blood on Christ’s robe; and though we normally associate Jesus with the blood of His redemptive sacrifice, this time, the blood on His garments is the blood of His enemies as well! For He has come to make war with justice and righteousness against all that is evil.

Lesson 14
Revelation 18:1-19:10. With Mystery Babylon and all she stood for destroyed those who dwell on the earth express their woe - not for her destruction as much as what that will mean for their lives and their businesses! The picture in Heaven is much different as praises ring out and the long-anticipated wedding supper of the Lamb begins! Not only is the Bride (the Church) in attendance, but at the banquet table are seated all of those who have trusted God and looked forward to His provision over the ages!

Lesson 13
The bowls of God's wrath are quickly poured out upon the Beast's Empire and upon those who follow him. We noticed these are much like God's Judgements that fell upon the Egyptians just before the Exodus of His people from bondage! As bowl after bowl falls, Heaven confirms that God is just in these judgments for all He does is to avenge the deaths of His holy people! We also meet the woman that belongs to the Antichrist and to the Dragon and though we still have many questions about her one thing is sure - she will be judged most severely!

Revelation 12
As we cover Revelation 14 and 15, John sees the holy ones of God standing in heaven praising the Lamb as they sing their song of deliverance just before the bowls of God's wrath are poured out on those who have rejected Him. The wicked vine of Babylon that intoxicates and poisons the people of the earth will be cut down and the so-called “fruit” associated with it will be thrown into the wine press of God’s wrath to be crushed.

Revelation 11
Having been cast out of heaven, Satan knows that his time is short; and so, determined to do as much damage as he can he delegates his power to the two beasts who are the main figures in chapter 13. The Beast from the Sea represents the Antichrist — the political leader through whom Satan works during that time, while the Beast from the Earth represents “the False Prophet” who will work alongside the Antichrist, not only promoting him but also heading up the world’s false religion of the time and causing those who follow the Antichrist to take the Mark of the Beast upon them.

As we study Revelation 12:1-17 we learn that from the beginning Satan’s mission has always been to destroy the Anointed One, the Christ of God, in order to prevent the Redemption of mankind and consequently he has tried on numerous occasions to destroy the Jewish people from whom the Messiah would come.

Lesson 9
John speaks of a time when those who do not belong to God hold power in Jerusalem and their destructive influence is felt in that city for 42 months. Even so, God’s voice is not silenced because He sends two witnesses to earth to speak forth His message.

In the first two woes of the Tribulation God shows John all of Hell let loose on the earth. Though the suffering is great He reveals that the opportunity to repent and be saved still exists, even then. However, the people of the earth choose not to take hold of the forgiveness that could so easily be theirs and so finally God declares: "There shall be no delay!" Grace will no longer be extended and judgment is about to begin!

Revelation 7:1-8:13 Prior to the judgements of Revelation all those who belong to God, both Jew and Gentile alike, are marked as His servants with the seal of the Living God, helping us to realize that even in the midst of terrible calamity God knows who are His!

Revelation 6:1-17 As Jesus open the scroll in heaven different events happen upon the earth. One of the truths made plain to us from the text is that God often holds back His full judgement, thus proving His great mercy. He does not want any to perish but all to come to repentance. Revelation 4:6-5:14 John wept at the thought that there was no one in heaven to open the scroll - God's final will for the earth. The glimpse of heaven had changed his heart from one filled with fear to one overflowing with eager expectation! He was told that the Lion of Judah was able to open the scroll and to look inside but when he turned John didn't see a lion, but rather a lamb looking as though violently slain. As the Lion of Judah, Christ the Messiah is ruler of all! But He is also the Lamb of God, who was slain so that we could be freed from the power of sin to stand clothed in purity before the throne of God in Heaven.
Lesson 4
Revelation 3:7-4:6 As we study the last two churches of Revelation we see that there was such a contrast between the Faithful Church in Philadelphia and the Lukewarm Church of Laodicea. Those who were faithful had "little strength" of their own, whereas those of Laodicea were so self-sufficient they didn't even know how much they needed Jesus!

Revelation 2:12-3:6 In this lesson Jesus speaks to the churches in Pergamum, Thyatira and Sardis. Two were struggling with false teachers and compromise, but Sardis suffered from none of these things! They had no accusers, no struggles, no persecution, no false apostles! This was not because they were doing everything right! Far from it! Satan didn't have to bother with them because the church in Sardis was fast asleep! Jesus urged them to wake up

Revelation 2:1-11 As we cover the first two of the seven churches Christ addressed in Revelation we learn that He is indeed the God who sees. He is with us, He loves us and He understands all that we face! But He wants us to trust Him and hold to the promises in His Word even unto death, if need be, for in Him we have strength for the present and the assurance of a future where we will see Him face to face!

Lesson 4 - The Day of Atonement
The Day of Atonement was the only day of the year when the High Priest was allowed into God’s presence to offer the blood of a sacrifice, but the blood of bulls and goats could never take away sin — at best this provided only a temporary solution. Join us to discover how Jesus fulfilled the Day of Atonement and how He has permanently reconciled us to God the Father.
Lesson 3 - The Holy of Holies and the High Priest
The veil separated mankind from God’s presence in the Holy of Holies — the inner sanctum of the Tabernacle that contained the Ark of the Covenant. The only person allowed to enter there on one special day each year was the High Priest, who is a beautiful picture of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Lesson 2 - The Outer Court and the Holy Place
The Tabernacle is a beautiful picture of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and all that He has done to bring us into the Father’s presence! But in this lesson especially, it also speaks to our daily lives, showing us how we can continue to live in His presence, following Him and serving Him with our whole hearts.
Lesson 1- The Need for Blood Sacrifice
Genesis 4:1-15; Exodus 8-12; and John 18:28-40. God decreed from the beginning that mankind’s sin can only be atoned for by the blood of a perfect sacrifice. The sacrificial system which the Jewish people used in worship is well documented in the Scriptures. They escaped God’s judgment and were able to fellowship with Him because of the blood of animals that died on their behalf. This method of approaching God through the blood of another, foreshadowed Jesus Christ and all that He would accomplish in His death on the cross.
Lesson 12 - Live Worthy of the Calling
Hebrews 13:1-25. The author closes his letter with some final exhortations to the kind of holy living that will both help his readers stand firm in their faith and witness to those around them. In this last chapter, he speaks about life of love, purity and contentment that God desires. And he reminds his readers that God’s grace will be with them as they follow Christ, no matter where He leads.
Lesson 11 - Life as A Beloved Child of God
Hebrews 12:5-29.Running the race marked out for us won’t always be easy, as the readers of the letter to the Hebrews were discovering. It requires effort, focus and discipline. But God’s training program for His children is marked by a love and wisdom no earthly parent could provide; and it leads to the holiness without which no man can see God.
Lesson 10 - Endure Looking to Him Who Is Invisible
Hebrews 11:20-12:4. The roll call of heroes continues in the rest of Hebrews 11. From patriarchs like Isaac, Jacob and Joseph to prophets like Moses, Elijah, Elisha and Daniel…from once-timid judges like Gideon and Barak to a pagan woman who believed and became part of the bloodline of Christ. The Old Testament believers who walked by faith in a promise that was not fulfilled in their lifetime, encourage us to keep on believing and to run with patience the race set before us.
Lesson 9 - Those Who Walked By Faith
Hebrews 11:1-19. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a real-life, flesh-and-blood example is priceless when it comes to living by faith. In chapter 11 the author reminds his readers of those who have gone before, walking with eyes of faith and hearts set on the promises of God yet to be revealed. Will they embrace their examples and hold firm in their own trials too?
Lesson 8 - The Way into God’s Presence has been Opened
Hebrews 10:1-39. Today’s lesson marks a turning point in the letter to the Hebrews. The writer compares the many offerings made by the Temple priests with the single sacrifice made by Christ on the cross and all that accomplished. He goes on to challenge them with just what it looks like to trust in Jesus — and what it would mean to reject Him.
Lesson 7 - A Better Sacrifice
Hebrews 9:5-28. The writer discusses one of the most holy days in the Jewish calendar — the Day of Atonement. His readers would have felt deep cultural and religious ties to all the beautiful and meaningful events of that day. But even that most holy day could not do what Christ had done for them. Would they finally see the differences? Would they finally be able to live in the reality instead of just the shadows?
Lesson 6 - The Perfect for the Imperfect
Hebrews 7:20—9:5. After comparing Christ’s ministry with that of the Levitical priests, the writer of Hebrews then began to compare the new covenant mediated by Christ with the old imperfect one. The old covenant based on the law was something that had governed the Jewish people’s lives for centuries and it was something they struggled to let go of. If everything they thought fixed forever had been superseded by something new — even if it was better and more sure — what were they to do?
Lesson 5 - Lessons from the Past
Hebrews 6:13 — 7:19. Two Old Testament characters play major roles in this week’s lesson. Abraham — father of the Jewish nation — who showed faith and endurance waiting for God’s promise to be fulfilled. And Melchizedek — the somewhat mysterious King-Priest who received tithes from Abraham and blessed him. What do the readers of the letter need to learn from these men — and what difference will it make in their suffering?
Lesson 4 - Jesus Our Example
Hebrews 5:1 — 6:12. From continuing descriptions of Christ as God’s chosen High Priest, the writer highlights Christ’s obedience in the midst of His sufferings and the salvation it brought us. He urged these Hebrew believers to follow His example and yield to God's will, whether their circumstances changed or not. He encouraged them to embrace all the truths about Christ — not just the comfortable ones. And then he began to speak about those who had apparently fallen away from the belief in Christ they once professed.
Lesson 3 - Don’t Make the Mistake of Turning Away
Hebrews 3:16-4:16. The Hebrew believers were much like the Israelites after the Exodus. Set free from slavery to sin in Christ, they faltered when things got difficult and were considering a return to the way things were before He set them free. They were facing the same issue and the same danger as their ancestors: Would they trust God’s faithfulness going forward or would they turn away for the sake of temporary relief?
Lesson 2 - God Becomes One of Us
Hebrews 2:5-3:19. In this week’s lesson, the writer continues to remind his readers just Who Christ is — He is God Himself, come in the flesh to identify with His fallen creatures and set them free. And in demonstrating that He was greater than even Moses, the writer pulls no punches: If Christ is who He says He is, why are you turning away from Him?

Hebrews 1:1—2:5. The book of Hebrews was written to a heavily persecuted group of believers who were considering returning to their Jewish roots in order to escape suffering for Christ. In this letter the unknown writer reminds them Who they have believed in why He is worthy of their trust and devotion.

Esther 8:1—10:3. As our story concludes in great triumph for God’s people, we see how the Living God is at work even in the darkest of times and that He is able to use even the most unlikely people to accomplish His purposes.

Lesson 6 - God our Only Hope of Rest
Psalm 62, Psalm 73 and Psalm 131. Life can be hard. People and circumstances can come against us and cause us to doubt, to fear, to wobble a bit, perhaps. But when we come to understand who God is and as we seek understanding from Him, we begin to see everything around us more clearly. We have a fortress, a refuge we can run to; and as we put our trust in Him we can know true rest.
Lesson 5 - The God Who Forgives
Psalm 51, Psalm 32 and Psalm 103. David knew what it was to suffer unjustly; but he also knew the pain of having to endure the consequences of his own sins and failures. These Psalms detail David’s repentance for sin and also God’s response. Like David we are to remember all that God has done for us andgive wholehearted thanks for His love, goodness, compassion, forgiveness, and salvation.
Lesson 4 - God our Refuge
Psalm 142, Psalm 57 and Psalm 34. These three Psalms were written as David hid in the Cave of Adullam or the Cave of Refuge. Although this was perhaps the most frustrating period in David’s life — in hindsight, it turned out to be one of the most fruitful, because all he learned there about himself and about the Lord made him the king God wanted him to be! God does some of His best work in the darkest moments of our lives!

God our Helper
Psalm 121 and Psalm 84. Surely there will be mountains that we have to climb in life, but we do not have to travel the road alone! God will not let our foot slip, no matter how treacherous the path that we take. Though there will be valleys filled with tears, if we will but look to Him for help, He will use us — not in spite of what we have gone through, but because of it!
Lesson 2
God our Faithful Protector
Psalm 91. God protects us. He draws us close to Himself, in the secret place near to His heart, and shelters us like a mother hen does her chicks. Because Christ has already won the victory against that old serpent Satan, we too will triumph over him and all his efforts to harm us. We aren’t promised a life of freedom from the enemy’s attacks but we are promised that God will answer when we call to Him.

The God Who Sees You.
Psalm 139 and Psalm 23. God is completely aware of the lives we lead. He knows what we do; but He also knows our thoughts. He is aware of our personalities and our temperaments, our strengths and weaknesses. Being known so thoroughly and watched over so carefully can sound uncomfortable, however David confirms in Psalm 23 that our loving Heavenly Father can be trusted. He watches over us rather like a shepherd watches over his sheep as he leads them to safety.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:28 Paul speaks of the Rapture of the Church as well as the resurrection of the righteous dead which occurs at Christ’s second coming! He also gives us instructions on how to live for the Lord while we wait!

1 Thessalonians 2:17-4:12. Paul explains that following Jesus as King produces such counter-cultural way of life that conflict with our neighbors over our beliefs is sure to arise. However, our response to their hostility should always be that of love, grace and generosity motivated by the hope we have in Christ.
Lesson 1
Acts 17:1-13 and 1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:16. Paul focuses on how we can live for Christ in times of suffering and persecution and his words are as relevant to us as they were to the church in Thessalonica.
Lesson 4Colossians 4:2-18 and Philemon 1:1-22. Paul concludes his letter to those in Colossae by mentioning a run-away slave called Onesimus, with whom Paul had shared the Gospel while in prison. The story of Onesimus and his master Philemon provides us with a fascinating illustration of how dramatically the love and grace of God is to change our own lives and relationships.
Lesson 3
In Colossians 3:1-4:1. Paul urges believers to let go of the traits of our past lives and he speaks of the new life in Christ that we are to pick up! Our love for Jesus is to not only change us, it is also to transform our closest relationships!

Colossians 1:24-2:23. Paul viewed his suffering as a privilege rather than a punishment! His whole life was committed to serving Christ in the places that God put him and to seeing believers grow in their faith whether he'd met them or not. He knew that his witness to others mattered for eternity and ours does too!

Galatians 4:31-5:26. Because of our freedom in Christ we are able to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. Describing what our new life in Christ will look like, Paul urges us to purposefully follow the Spirit — to keep in step with Him, as He leads us in our walk with God!

Galatians 4:1-31. Paul was concerned the Christians of Galatia not listen to false teaching that was prevalent at the time. He wanted them to understand that those who claim Christ as their Lord cannot live as they please, however we must be careful of legalism! As those transformed by God’s grace, we walk in obedience to God’s will because we love Him, not because we fear His disapproval or judgment.
Lesson 3
Galatians 3:1-29. Whether we are Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female, we all need Christ Jesus. Paul urged his friends to never abandon the truth that when we belong to Christ, we become one of Abraham’s descendants, for Abraham is the father of all who believe!
Lesson 2
Galatians 2:1-21. Christ gave His life on the cross so that each one of us could be reconciled to God, brought into His family, and given a new life we did not know before. Paul had suffered much since he had begun to follow Christ, but he knew he could never compromise the message God had given him!

Galatians 1:1-24. Paul wanted his Galatian readers to understand that there is only one way for mankind to be saved. It was the Lord Jesus Christ who had called Paul to be a minister of the Gospel, and he had been willing to take that message into even the hardest of places.

Lesson 4 - An Example in Perseverance
1 Kings 21:1-28; 1 Kings 19:19-21 and 2 Kings 2:1-15.Elijah was an incredible man of prayer. He knew what it was like to persevere even when he was hated and rejected for his relationship with God. Choosing not to see it as the end of his usefulness to God, he was willing to see God’s bigger picture and humbly invest in the life of his successor, Elisha.
Lesson 3 - When Fear Overwhelms and Depression Sets In
1 Kings 18:40-19:18.
As Christ followers, we know that the extremes of life teach us to trust Him, they draw us closer to Him, and conform us to His likeness. Elijah shows us what to do when those dark moments happen in our lives. God is never going to forget us! In fact, the Lord often uses those valleys to take us on to higher places, if only we will put our trust in Him and obey His Word.
Lesson 21 - An Exceptional God
Kings 17:12-18:40.
Elijah knew that nothing is impossible for God. In his encounter with the prophets of Baal we learn the truth that all religions are not the same and that enthusiasm and great activity are not always signs of spirituality! The prophets of Baal were no doubt sincere in what they believed, but it is possible to be sincerely wrong! People can have faith, but what truly matters is the object of that faith!
Lesson 1 - 1 Kings 17:1-15. We know nothing about the Prophet Elijah other than he came from the town of Tishbe in Gilead. No one knows about his family or his education, all we do know is that he was rather an odd character! But his life teaches us that God knows how to raise up leaders when they are needed, and that He can use anyone — even a person from absolute obscurity — to do His will!
Lesson 7 – Serving others as faithful stewards of God’s grace 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 & 27-31; Genesis 39:3-5; Genesis 39:22-23; Genesis 41:43; Acts 6; 1 Peter 4:7-11; Acts 16 and Romans 16:3. In this lesson we cover the final two gifts of administration and hospitality. We also talk about discerning and developing our gifts in community with other believers.
Lesson 6 – Not a God of Disorder, but of Peace1 Corinthians 14:1-40. We look at some of the issues facing the church in Corinth. Paul wasn’t faulting the Corinthians for wanting all that the Holy Spirit gives. In fact, he encouraged them to desire spiritual gifts. However, he wanted them to focus on a few very important principles as they did.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11; 1 Corinthians 12:15-21; 1 Kings 3:16-28; Acts 27:1-44; Acts 16:16-18. Paul wanted believers to understand that all the gifts — as varied and different as they are — come from the same source. The same Spirit gives each one and the same Lord is served through them. This week we study the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, discernment, tongues and the interpretation of tongues.

The Scriptures reveal that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit the moment that we put our faith in Jesus Christ, but what does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Are we perhaps settling for less in our walk with the Lord?
Lesson 1 - Who is the Holy Spirit?
Ephesians 1:13-14; John 16:7-15; Acts 5:1-4; Ephesians 4:30; Hebrews 10:26-29; Mark 3:22-30; Romans 8:15-17 & 26-27. Prior to looking at the different spiritual gifts God gives to those who trust in Jesus, we first look at what the Scriptures reveal about the Holy Spirit Himself and clear up some common misconceptions.
Lesson 1 - Face of the Betrayer
John 12:5-6; John 6:66-71; Matthew 10:1-8; Luke 22:1-6; Matthew 26:14-16; John 13:27-30; Matthew 26:47-50 and finally Matthew 27:1-7. It has always amazed me that Judas Iscariot followed when others deserted Christ. And though he heard every message that Jesus preached and saw every miracle —he did not believe in Jesus as the Son of God who could forgive sins. There is much that we can learn from the one who betrayed Christ.
Lesson 6 – Paul
Acts 9:1-30; Philippians 3:4-9; Philippians 4:4-9 and 4:12-13; and 2 Corinthians 11:24-28. We concluded our study with Paul, whose life was completely transformed by his encounters with the grace of Jesus Christ. A grace so powerful that it was able to change the Pharisee Saul — enemy and persecutor of the Church —into the Apostle Paul — protector of the faith and preacher to the Gentiles.
Lesson 5 – Peter
Luke 5:1-11; Matthew 16:13-18; Luke 22:14:34 and John 21:1-19. Peter followed Jesus imperfectly, in fits and starts, sometimes getting the point, sometimes not — responding to Christ’s gentle and not-so-gentle rebukes, receiving His forgiveness and redirection more times than we can count. Through the grace shown to Peter we learn that even in our worst moments, we are not alone and that God is the God of second chances!
Lesson 4 – Mary and Martha
Luke 10:38-42 and John 11:1-12:6. Mary, Martha and Lazarus were close friends of Jesus and I’m sure that when Lazarus fell sick and died the two sisters were left with many questions about Christ’s love for them. However, from their story we learn that grace is at work even when our world is shattered and when it seems as if God doesn’t care.
Lesson 3 – John the Baptist
Luke 1:5-25; Mark 1:4-8; John 1:29-37 and Mark 6:20-29 The life of John the Baptist teaches us that the grace of God sets us apart even before we are born and unfolds God’s plan to us as we walk in obedience to His call. Grace encourages us and gives us the strength to hold on even when we doubt so that we finish our race well.
Lesson 2 – The Woman at the Well
John 4:1-42 For the first time in His ministry, Jesus directly claimed to be the Messiah and in doing so He entrusted the Gospel message to a woman that no one else would have even spoken to! The good news for you and for me is that God’s choice of unlikely messengers hasn’t changed, so there’s room for us to be used in His Kingdom even today!
Lesson 1 - Nicodemus
John 3:1-18; Numbers 21:4-9; John 7:45-52 and John 19:38-42. Nicodemus’ encounter with Christ teaches us that God isn’t put off by our tentative questioning in the middle of the night. If we seek Him, He will never turn us away but will receive us just as we are. He will speak to us in ways that we can understand, but He will also lead us to the real issues we need to face.
Exodus 17:8-16. This short passage of Scripture teaches us so much about Biblical Leadership. You will be challenged and encouraged all at the same time!
Daniel 1; 2 & 6. Daniel’s life shows us that God is in control; and even when our world is turned upside down, He is working to fulfill His purposes. He reveals Himself to those who seek Him. He gives wisdom to those who ask and He is fully able to protect us as we serve Him.
2 Chronicles 17:1-13; 18:1-19:2 & 20:1-30. Jehoshaphat is one of the good kings in Israel’s history and yet he was not perfect. He made mistakes and occasionally wandered from God’s path, but in times of distress Jehoshaphat cried out to God and by His grace, God answered in the most remarkable ways.
1 Kings 17—19. Elijah was a human being with strengths and weaknesses just like us. But he shows us that God hears His people — those who have been made righteous by trusting in Him for salvation — and He is faithful to supply our needs in every circumstance.
Joshua 2:1-24 and Joshua 6:1-25. The Story of Rahab proves that it doesn’t matter where we’ve come from or what we’ve done. Nothing disqualifies us from salvation except unbelief.
Exodus 17:8-16, Joshua 1:6,7 & 9 and Joshua 3:2-4:7. Joshua was able to act in faith because he had come to know God as the One who keeps His promises. Joshua knew the Lord remains faithful from generation to generation in the face of battles, loss and unexpected challenges.
Selected Scriptures and Genesis 22:1-14. Abraham didn’t always look like the hero of the faith we see mentioned in Hebrews 11. His poor decisions sometimes got him into trouble; and yet God continued to refine Abraham, bringing him to the point of being able to trust Him completely.

Acts 27:13-28:16. On his journey to Rome Paul endured a tempest and a shipwreck. When gathering wood for a much-needed fire, Paul was then bitten by a viper! Even that did not discourage him! He merely shook off the serpent and continued to serve!

Acts 26:1-27:12. Realizing his limited understanding of the Jewish religion and culture, Festus brought Paul before Herod Agrippa, but after hearing his defense, the bewildered leaders lamented the fact that Paul had appealed to Caesar, as they believed him innocent of the charges.

Acts 23:30-25:27. Paul spent two years in Roman custody at Caesarea. When Festus was appointed as Governor of Judea, the Jews tried to take advantage of his lack of local knowledge by insisting he return Paul to Jerusalem and so Paul appealed to Caesar, thus sealing his fate!

Acts 21:31-23:30. As the Prophet Agabus had predicted, upon arriving in Jerusalem Paul was seized by the Jewish authorities and handed over to the Romans, but the Lord stood near Paul and told him to “take courage". God's plan for His Apostle was not yet complete!

Acts 18:12-19:41. Paul faced opposition wherever he went. The silversmiths of Ephesus were angry because of his preaching. As people turned to Christ, they lost their fascination with the goddess Artemis and the silversmiths' business suffered because of it!

Acts 15:36-16:40. After several unsuccessful attempts at journeying into Asia, Paul and Silas traveled to Philippi. Their ministry there probably looked different to what they had expected, as after delivering a slave girl from demonic possession they ended up beaten and thrown into prison!

Acts 14:8-15:35. It was not long before false teachers began to disrupt the church in Antioch with their doctrine of circumcision teaching that salvation was only for the Jews. The Council of Jerusalem issued a firm decree confirming that salvation is for both Jew and Gentile alike and that it is given by grace, not by the Law.

Daniel's third vision came as he was interceding for his people. Known as the Prophecy of Seventy Weeks or Seventy Sevens, this complex and amazingly detailed prophecy forms a type of clock for the nation of Israel and her future.

Daniel remained useful to the Lord well into his 80's. His vision of the four beasts warned of the procession of enemies and world rulers that would hold authority over Israel. However, they should not lose heart and nor should we for God is in control!

When commanded to worship the golden image Nebuchadnezzar had set up Daniel’s three friends refused to obey. They knew the risks, but chose to obey God's Word rather than the command of a mere man. They stood for the Lord, and we should too!

As we study the last two churches addressed in Revelation we see a contrast between the Faithful Church in Philadelphia and the Lukewarm Church of Laodicea. Those who were faithful had "little strength" of their own, whereas those of Laodicea were so self-sufficient they didn't know how much they needed Jesus!

Jesus speaks to the churches in Pergamum, Thyatira and Sardis. Two were struggling with false teachers and compromise, but Sardis suffered from none of these things! They had no accusers, no struggles, no persecution, no false apostles! This was not because they were doing everything right! Far from it! Those at Sardis were so fast asleep Satan didn’t have to bother with them!
