The chip cycles are revving and that means new devices are coming. One of them just might be a successor to the original Chromebook Pixel, which debuted two years ago this month. Evidence of testing Chrome OS software with an unannounced laptop that has both a lightbar on the lid and 2560 x 1700 resolution was found recently and the screenshot evidence was promptly pulled.
Turns out the original Pixel had those same characteristics so it’s not a stretch to consider a Pixel 2 is in the works. Besides: The first edition is nearly two chip generations behind current computers and doesn’t benefit from the battery life found in today’s laptops.

We often talk about Chromebooks in the consumer and education markets so it’s easy to overlook the Windows-centric enterprises. Dell isn’t doing that though: The company has a new computing appliance that supports Chromebooks for I.T organizations to manage in-house systems for inventory and support purposes. It’s an interesting addition to the product line, and one that says Dell isn’t going to ignore Chromebooks for businesses.

Acer was the first company to launch a Chromebook with fifth-generation Intel chip and there’s no signs of the company slowing down. It released two more Chrome OS laptops on Wednesday aimed squarely at the classroom: The C740 and larger C920 Chromebooks, which start at $259.99 and $299.99 respectively.
We cover all the details of these new devices, plus give updates on some of the latest [company]Google[/company] Chrome OS and Chrome for [company]Apple[/company] iOS features in this week’s podcast. Today might not be the best day to buy a new Chromebook or Chromebox. Why? Because the next chip-cycle from Intel started last week with one new Chromebook already announced and several others reportedly in the works. That means you can expect model refreshes in the near future and current prices to drop on existing Chrome OS computers as inventory is cleared out. A Chromecast might make a good purchase now though: There are more apps and accessories on the scene.

It’s pretty easy to have the top Chromebook at CES when you’re the only one at the show. That’s the case with Acer’s Chromebook 15, which was actually announced before the Consumer Electronics Show even started.
We did get some hands on time with the big laptop and we share thoughts on it, as well as the new, fifth-generation Intel chips you’ll find inside the various models. Surprisingly there has been more Chromecast news at this year’s show, and we’ve got it all on this week’s podcast.

Last year we saw the new LG Chromebase and Toshiba Chromebook, even though you couldn’t purchase either for weeks after. That’s likely the case in 2015 as Acer appears to have a pair of Chromebooks coming in March. The timing is right for a CES introduction.

News of more Chromebooks than iPads sold to U.S. schools in the third quarter isn’t terribly surprising; we’ve noted the trend several times this year. With tight budgets and lower-cost computers that meet most needs in the classroom, Chromebooks are a good choice. So too are iPads but they don’t have a keyboard, which could have some impact as well due to Common Core education standards being adopted by states.
We chat about that as well as Google’s Android app strategy on Chrome OS, plus a handy hidden feature in Chrome for Android on this week’s podcast.
