Cocktails and Canoes: Recent Episodes

Kelly and Will

This is a podcast about two best friends coming together over a cocktail (or mocktail) and talking about a sport that they both love.

We were able to get Joseph Gapuz and Huy Do on the podcast together, and they did not disappoint! Both were Cal Berkeley graduates, and their paddling careers took off during college. It started with Dragonboat paddling as we've heard so many times before, but now has also dabbled in the V1 game. And by dabbled - we mean jumped in ama first doing downwind runs up and down the coast and competing in the NAC Va'a California V1 Series for the past two years. We were stoked to have them!

Hawaiki Nui is Will's favorite topic. Ever. In the history of ever. Tupu King joins us on this episode to go into the day-by-day recap of the three-day Hawaiki Nui Race. Tupu raced with our brothers from Ka Lahui Kai, and once again, they had a solid performance down in Tahiti.

We extend our heartfelt condolences, love, and support to the family, friends, and community of Kevin Kouider. A true legend in the sport of outrigger canoe paddling, we feel blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him during his visits to California for Va'a California and Catalina, even if it was only a few times.

The episode you've all been waiting for. Hopefully...There's a lot to unpack here. Another collaboration with the BROADCAST BRADDAHS! Just know that by the time you finish listening to this, Jane Crayton will already have completed a half marathon.
We dive into the Catalina Crossing, starting by picking one word we thought described our experiences. Listen. It tracks.
Five callers on the episode? That's a full house! It was quite a lively discussion. Every good podcast needs a little humor, even if it's at Judson's expense. We confront Miles on his poor paddling choices. Sometimes, we all make questionable decisions, right? Johnny dives into the technique of shell va'a with Will. We listened to Kala'i and Justin's bromance grow - it was like listening to a rom-com on air. And then we hang up on Kekoa because Kelly wants to go to sleep.

Like we said, a lot to unpack. Warning: Explicit Language.

The first panel of the Wild Buffalo Relay Panel was guest speakers from Open Water,DannyNichols and Kyle Kelly, and We Are Ocean Paddler Claire Kennedy. Due to a late start in recording, the first part of We Are Ocean was cut short. You can learn more about We Are Ocean on our Episode with Jack Shimko, The We Are Ocean Episode.

Open Water is a community of surfers, adventurers, and advocates who have joined together to support those who protect us. Operation Open Water’s efforts started with surfing. With each wave, the transformative experience of the ocean can challenge the body, liberate the soul and unite our hearts. It’s an experience that bonds and even heals.

The primary mission of the NAC / We Are Ocean Cancer Program is to provide ocean-based, transformational adventures for teens and young adults (15-39) fighting and surviving cancer. The NAC / We Are Ocean Cancer Program focuses on bringing intimate groups of cancer fighters and survivors together in coastal wilderness environments while providing opportunities for connection, self-discovery, empowerment, support, and adventure.

You don't know Jack about Jack Marshall Shimko until you listen to this episode. From the early stages of his cancer diagnosis, he knew he wanted to give back and make a difference in the cancer community. With Paddle2Live, he completed many WILD solo prone paddling trips across the Channel Islands while raising money for cancer research, one trip that earned him the Surfer Magazine Agent of Change award in 2012. He shares the sketchy moments as well and the great memories he made on these 150-260 mile solo paddle treks.

Then he started We Are Ocean, and the rest is history!

Since 2012, We Are Ocean has provided carefully curated ocean and coastal wilderness experiences, camps, and programs for young adult cancer survivors. You can catch the NAC / We Are Ocean team on Catalina from March 31 to April 2, participating in the Wild Buffalo Race. They are teaming up with NAC Outrigger paddlers and Team Open Water to cross the channel and keep cancer on the sidelines.

Ironwoman, World Record Setter and smasher, surfski paddler and all around really awesome girl! This is the Bonnie Hancock episode! She took it upon herself to paddle around the CONTINENT of Australia on her Nordic Surfski - and all for bringing awareness and raising funds to a non-profit called Gotcha 4 Life. We ask this Ultra-Endurance athlete: Why? What made you decide that this is what you were going to do? She answers. Bonnie dives into how long she paddled each day, her animal encounters (plural by the way), and other stories about her circumnavigation of 16,000km of the Australian coastline. We are so impressed by Bonnie and her accomplishments, including her recent world records, and her story has just begun. Did we mention she's only 32?

Here are some Australian terms to help you along the way:

Australian Saltwater Crocodile - the largest reptile known to man that will rip the paddle out of your hands and should be avoided at all costs.

Meters - metric system measurement. So when she says the 'animal' is 100 meters in front of her. It was 328 feet. So, thats cool.

After Hurricane Kay took a turn for the worse, the SCORA committee had no choice but to pivot and change the course of this year's Catalina Crossing. Which meant - we weren't crossing the channel insert crying emoji . Some teams dropped and decided not to come (which was understandable), but there was still a lot of competition out in Newport Sunday morning.

Cora Wolfe (Lanakila) , Savannah Wright (Hui Nalu) and Brandi Cumin Baksic (Dana Point) give their insight on how the weekend went for them and their teams! Lanakila Women placed 3rd, Hui Nalu 2nd and Dana Point earned First Place at the 2022 Cancelina Crossing.
We also learn more about pool noodles, football teams, and pelotons.

We sit down with RJ DeRama to talk about the past, present and future of the Makapo Aquatics Project. As well as what order he watches Star Wars in.

The Makapo Aquatics Project was originally a team of five blind men gathered together by John Chavez.  It was John’s dream to field a team of all blind paddlers to compete in the 18-mile Queen Liliu’okalani Outrigger Canoe race in Kona, HI.  Being the largest race in the world, it would be a showcase of what blind people could accomplish despite their disability.

Our intro doesn't do her justice - Leanne Stanley is a force in the paddling community as well as an incredible role model to all paddlers. We catch up with her to see how all 150+ (!!) Canadian paddlers are doing in the IVF World Distance Sprints and what they've accomplished so far.  Kelly needs to sit down after just thinking about managing a team that large internationally.

Fun Fact: Kong started his paddling career in the C1! And wasn't too long ago that he finally sat down in an OC1 and hasn't looked back - or maybe we haven't been able to keep up?

We want to start with: We love you guys. Thank you for all the support. We're still balancing our work, family, and podcast schedule and some weeks are better than others.

We're going to be honest. We ran out of time this week. The best we could do was hop on an episode while driving home from the Culture Hot Sauce Farmers Market booth while Will was working late in the shop.

If this is your first episode - pick a different one and come back to this one. But hey, we're honest and we're consistent!
