sound quality was pretty bad, I’m not sure what Apple aims to accomplish with their weird volume scaling algorithm, but I’ve yet to have the phone correct my volume and me feel like, woah, I like that it did that!

This was my first time playing along with this song. My father in law was here this weekend and, after he played this song for me I was immediately in love with it…so I decided to jam with it on my way home today.

Bonus Weekend Content! For all the flute lovers in the audience, today I’ve whipped up a REAL doosie!

The car got hot today and my mirror couldn’t support the phone. The result was a cool shot that shows a lot of the quena-work. This was not a first-time improv, I tried the song three times before this take over the days prior.

This mish-mash format seemed like fun, and I fought this month with an overflow of ideas to write about, so I thought I’d take a stab at it to clean house a bit and have fun with a shorter format that showcases my actual scatterbrain. So here is a mashup of shorter ideas that could have been posts but I did this instead.

Mornin’ Pull-UpsMe and my girls do a round of pull-ups every morning if we’re able. I often leave before they get up during the week, but when we are together, they always come up to me first thing.

Mornin’ pull-ups?

They look up anxiously with puppy dog eyes (they do it consciously, so I don’t let it get me too much)

Mornin’ Pull-Ups!

I exclaim, not one to let whatever I may be going through get in the way of my kids’ developing a fun and positive relationship with strength and fitness -

I spot them through as many reps as they want, then use their enthusiasm to renew my own personal commitment to fitness…so I can muster it up if I have to and follow suit. I walk over the the bar and shake out my shoulders.

Mornin’, Pull-Ups ;)

Irons in the fireHave you heard that expression? I have like 6 open drafts I’ve really interested in finishing. I have this mish-mash post that I’m using to catch all the stragglers, and if they grow too big I make them into drafts of their own…at one post per day, I’ll never get to say it all.

I’ll get sick of writing at some point.

Ok, fair enough, finally something we can agree on. I guess I can just work on them at whatever pace I’m able, but whatever isn’t complete when the next creative cycle picks up, that gets thrown out. I don’t work on stale posts..not in an idea economy this overstimulated anyway. Basic supply and demand dictate there’s no way I won’t throw out at least a few seemingly great ideas each month.

*whatever, dude

and knowing is half the battle

On the Capacity for ViolenceI was thinking about having a son as I was driving to get my car inspected. I was pondering the lessons I’ll teach him, what they’ll be and when he’ll learn them - all the while, in the background I am aware that none of this will go as planned. Many of these lessons I will forget or at least never remember at the right time, or I’ll remember but won’t be able to get them across.

I expect I’ll get to convey to my children about 5% of what my dreams hold for them.
One thing I want my children to understand, is the virtue and nobility that is seated within the capacity for violence. Sound crazy?

Note, there is an ocean between capacity and propensity.

Further, the virtue of non-violence only exists within the larger sphere of capacity for violence. For a man who is non-violent because he lacks the capacity, his non-violence is not a virtue but a vice. If a threat should arise on this guy’s watch, his greatest ally will be his ability and willingness to outsource the honor and nobility that come from protecting others…he is capable of calling other men with the capacity he lacks, to handle the work - but in so doing, he forfeits the virtue that was his for the proving. That’s not to say we all need to be macho, or that men incapable of violence don’t deserve respect. I’m just saying, this is something I value.

The best and strongest of us, uplift our brothers and sisters of Earth. Strength carries the capacity for many potentials, just like a hammer.

I think a propensity for violence is a bad thing (How to use a big boy word in a little boy sentence LOL).

There will always be those for whom the capability of or capacity for violence comes easier than others, but we can all develop it if we will to.

Sounds kind of like I'm advocating for some kind of crazy shit to go down...

All I guess I'm saying, is that if there are shitloads of us people here on earth, and some of us are more or less prone to being capable of violence, it should also then be easy to foresee that not all of those with the propensity for violence would also be capable of it, and that some percentage of those would be willing to employ such means to their own benefit.

If and when that happens, what are the odds that there will be someone nearby who is capable of doing some violence on your behalf, if you can't be that someone? If it happens to someone else in trouble and you bear witness, having pondered this for yourself even if only in this moment, will you not wish that you had developed your human abilities in this regard?

GONEThe Watch

Ever since I decided I wanted it, I acted like I already had it. I trained like it was already on my wrist, storing up and aggregating data points in order to provide me with a meaningful analysis of my performance, in the light of my planned goals.

I allowed myself to feel the feeling of waking up to find new insights about my sleep and envisioned the leaps and bounds I was making with my lucid dreaming.

I avoided alternatives that were offered to me. There is but one, and it is already mine.

...and it was true, from the perspective of the timeless eternal now, the version of me that owned and loved his watch already existed somewhere in the hologram, I just had to track in on the right spot.

Meanwhile, back in the fourth dimension where change occurs at the speed of mud being shoved through a tube sock, it had been few years comin'.

Now it's here.

...but in the timeless eternal now, it is also already...

GONE

An new friend on Hive suggested breaking out the Blood Ravens recently, and I then decided to take it one step further - what if, instead of playing it in my car, I use it as an opportunity to call the crows?

So today was the first day of it. Not the best day for it, we’re on the tail end of a tropical storm (Debbie), so it’s wet out and drizzling - but I put out peanuts before and after playing, and I’m hoping if I do this regularly, maybe I will eventually catch their attention!

Thanks to Mr. B for the suggestion, I think this will be a game changer! Uploaded using 3Speak Mobile App

This is one of my favorite songs from the traditional side of quena music.
I got this album early on, when I wanted to get a feel for what exactly quena music should sound like -
I actually bought the CD, I have it in my garage right now.

This whole album is wonderful, but I think Fiesta Aymara has always been - and will always be - my favorite.

Here is the original song, in case you wonder what it sounds like when a skilled professional does it :)

Otherwise, nothing much new to say - I’ve never attempted to play this song prior to recording it this morning. Today was cool because a fire truck passed me while I was playing…later on I saw where they were headed - someone maybe died
this morning (not in the shot)…but it only looked like a single car accident, so I’m
wondering if alcohol was involved but there were two fire trucks, an ambulance
and like 5 cop cars on the scene when I passed it.

I've been having such vivid dreams lately. They're all over the place! I wake up each morning, stunned by both the excellent dream recall I'm experiencing, and also the fact that I didn't realize it was a dream when it was happening. In one dream, I found a j-shaped piece of steel tubing, like an upside-down cane, and I stood on the curved part and rode it all over town. I was flying over all sorts of terrain, but never stopped to ask what was propelling this simple vehicle.

Although lucid dreaming has long been a goal of mine, I must say I am extremely satisfied and grateful just to be remembering dreams on a daily basis - this has almost never been the case for me, yet now they're flooding in every night. I have cut out weed and alcohol for the most part, maybe that's helped.

Actually, when I first decided to cut out alcohol, I spent several nights lying awake and staring at the ceiling. After two sleepless weeks, I reintroduced alcohol, but to a lesser degree. At this point I was drinking roughly two lightly spiked drinks each night, compared to three heavily spiked drinks. But recent events led me to try cutting it out entirely once again. After two nights of barely sleeping, I moved to bring alcohol back once more, but by a still lesser proportion. The last two nights, I've just taken a Tylenol PM with a shot of vodka before bed. I'm hoping to break the connection between sleep and alcohol, but for now I'm happy to at least say I've broken the connection between alcohol and a good time.

I no longer come home looking forward to that first drink after work. Instead, I look forward to seeing my family and spending fun time with my girls. This change has brought so much joy and color to my world. Now instead of viewing alcohol as a way to cut loose after a long day of work, I look at it as a sleep aid, and plan to phase it out slowly in order to make the change more sustainable.

I typically find with myself, that sudden and major changes don't tend to stick long, but if I build a habit gradually, I am able to integrate it into what feels like my normal lifestyle. This change in approach has helped me build a healthier relationship with food as well. In order to cut back on overeating, I first tried just cutting my calories massively - but I found that all it took was one small hiccup in my nightly plans/expectations, and I would find myself binging cheesy crackers and chocolate chip cookies in the pantry before bed. Next thing I knew, I was overeating throughout the day again. So I took this "slow change" approach a few months back with food. I switched to a wide window version of intermittent fasting, allowing myself to eat only between 12 and 8 PM - but also allowing myself to adjust the plan according to the signals my body is sending me. Most days now, I really don't feel the need to eat before noon, but when I feel extremely hungry in the morning, I just have a small snack. Or today for example, I was both hungry this morning, and aware of the fact that I will be getting my hair cut during lunch - so I went ahead and ate my lunch right when I got to work. By making this subtle change and allowing myself some wiggle room, I seem to have created a system that doesn't feel like deprivation; this has thus far eliminated the desire to binge on junk food at night, as I feel like I am generally satisfied, and not denying myself basic comfort.

I wonder if not eating after 8PM has also helped with my dreaming? I would like to think so.

I've also completely cut out anything NSFW and deleted all "scrolling media" from my phone. I never used Facebook, but things like Instagram, X and TikTok have been an addition that consumed much of my free time - and also tended to trigger me towards the aforementioned vice. I am focused and dedicated to being the best version of myself, and to judging my progress on an awareness of where I am vs. where I started. Too often I have gauged my progress based on where I am vs. where I want to be, and under these standards it is easy to feel like you're not progressing - which (for me at least) leads to quitting altogether.

I am trying to use the same gauge to measure my progress with the quena. There are days when I look at where I am vs. where I want to be with the instrument, and I think - who are you kidding man, you're wasting your time; you'll never get there. But when those thoughts came in today, I took the lesson from my self-improvement journey and looked at where I started as the basis for comparison. When I got my first quena, I thought it was broken! I couldn't make a sound for the first week and, when I did, I could only make a sound with all the holes open...trying to cover holes or change notes back then would completely break the sound. After a month or two, I could play a consistent sound while walking up and down the scale, but half-holes and the second octave seemed like impossible dreams. After the first year, I could do these things, but playing along with recorded music seemed unachievable, completely out of reach. Now, after something like 4 years, I can play along with many songs - yet still others seem impossible. If I gauged the quality of my growth off of these seemingly impossible goals, I'd feel like a failure - but when I look back at all the things that once seemed impossible, I am infinitely aware of the fact that those things that are impossible now, will one day be second nature.

Today I played along with Bob Marley's One Drop. It wasn't a planned thing. I was listening to the Natural Mystic album on my way to work, and when this song came on something in the key just sounded right. I put up the camera, restarted the song, and took a blind stab at a brand new improvisational play-along - this is a fun way to pass the time while driving, and the pressure is officially off. These days, I just look to the quena for a fun and light hearted way to interact with other musicians, and although I have goals of continuously improving, I don't have any expectations as to how fast it will happen...which leaves no hiding place for disappointment or frustration to creep in and ruin my happy vibes. I think this is my favorite improvisation I've done to date. I'm excited for summer to be here, I'm excited to potentially jam along with this entire album, hell I'm excited to be alive! ...however what really has me jacked about this recording, is a little something I haven't been able to do before.

What's New, Pussycat?Typically, when I do an improv play-along, I just follow the lyrical melody (to the best of my ability of course)...but this time, and for the first time ever, I heard a secondary melody in my mindspace, and followed that instead! I mean, I did do some following of the lyrics, but man, check this one out because it sounds to me like a specific and unique flute part written just for this song...I'm stoked because it has always been my goal to play along with the lyrical melody until my skills increase enough to play my own melody that adds to the song...today is the first time it's really ever happened!

Typically when I see a new skill emerge, it is fleeting. It's a lot like learning a life lesson on psilocybin...you grasp it fully and comprehend it in four dimensions...you know it was real, but the next day, all you can hold onto is the feeling that it was here...the mind is incapable of holding onto a 4D concept in any fashion except for the emotional experience of having touched it in some way. Then, knowing it exists and through arduous labour in the third dimension, gradually you bring yourself closer and closer to re-locating that higher vibrational concept or idea.

In this case, what I'm predicting is that tomorrow I will once again be stuck, only capable of following the lyrical melody - I will start right back at the beginning of the path to freeform consciousness with my quena - but because I now have tasted freeform, I will start over on the path with a new sense of ambition, and will carry with me the emotional resonance of what that really feels like. In essence, this means I have leveled up, and started over all at the same time.
Each lap is the same track, but there is a slight difference in the ether.

Do I sound crazy? I feel like I sound a little crazy - but, just as any crazy person would, I can whole-heartedly assure you that I am not crazy.

Tagging @dandays because I think you'll dig this one...don't worry, I won't tag you in all of them, but I wanted you to know I'm doing this whole Sublime summer bit - and I think there will be some good ones in the mix if you decide to give 'em a look! :) ...had a half a beer last night before I came to my senses and dumped it down the drain. Life is a continuous series of choices, punctuated by epochs of sleep. I'm getting better at choosing *consciously* during the waking hours...soon the carburetor will be running smoothly.

I recorded a guided meditation using my updated personal intentions. Came out pretty good I think!

UPDATED INTENTION STATEMENTAfter a week or so of using my previous intention statement, I found there were some adjustments to make.

I deeply appreciate the meaningful connections I share with all beings in my world. My heart is filled with gratitude for the nurturing bonds within my family, the enriching presence of cherished friends, and the remarkable trust and affection bestowed upon me by the wise and loyal crows who grace my life. I love their voices, their individual personalities, and the way they act so comfortable and natural around me.

Playing the quena and yidaki fills me with boundless joy as I effortlessly channel my innate talent. Each note flows from my soul with flawless precision, captivating both my audience and the natural world around me. The melodies I create resonate harmoniously, drawing in the crows as they recognize and celebrate the enchanting sounds of my music.

I am filled with pride, excitement, and a deep sense of rejuvenation when I gaze into the mirror, enamored by my physical appearance and the vibrant energy radiating from within. I revel in my strength, vitality, and inner power, which imbue me with a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.

I joyfully embrace my freedom and vibrant health, living a life filled with vitality, clarity, and natural highs. I am deeply grateful for my sharp mind and impeccable memory, effortlessly retaining knowledge and effortlessly recalling information with clarity and precision.

With the gift of seeing auras and regularly experiencing lucid dreams, I am keenly attuned to my existence as a spiritual being navigating the human experience. Each day, my vibrations ascend as I gracefully traverse life's journey, attracting abundant financial wealth from every corner of the universe.

Just another improvised flute jam. I was originally thinking today I’d do another one off Bob Dylan’s World Gone Wrong album and, honestly I don’t remember how I wound up finding my way to Sublime instead. I will say that the first song I tried was Get Ready…which is one of my absolute favorites. But when the improv is really really bad, I tend to keep it to myself.

This one made me think of @dandays - summer is easing its way in and I’m looking forward to getting lunch breaks again :) Uploaded using 3Speak Mobile App

It’s an improv on another song I’ve never played before (on quena)…it is far from perfect as I trace my way nakedly through the melody, but I really enjoyed the overall scene of this recording - or honestly I wouldn’t have posted (to avoid double-posting).

It’s improving! I’ve been focusing mostly at this point on maintaining a smooth transition between the in and out breaths…particularly avoiding gaps, breaks and even changes in pitch while transitioning between them. I’ve also noticed each yidaki is unique, and each requires is own embouchure. The cheap plastic one (Toca) is probably the most optimized, having a balance between high volume/low bass and ease of play. The Meinl (featured in this video) is easier to play but tends to be lower volume and higher pitch, and the Kona has great volume and pitch, but due to the larger diameter of the tube and mouth piece it can be harder to hold a consistent drone. My goal is to work my way up to playing the Kona excellently, but this will take some practice.

This year I decided to add the didgeridoo to my list of whatever’s. I researched a good bit before getting started. Then I made one out of bamboo, but when I couldn’t play it I was shocked! …all the info I saw online indicated it should be super easy, so was my homemade didge no good, or was it harder to play than I had been led to believe? Only way to find out was to pick one up and give it a shot!

…watch me struggle and try to learn this awesome instrument - and if you’re trying to learn the didge, perhaps get some inspiration from seeing someone else have a hard time getting started :)

I finally figured out a way to record, in the car, while playing along with music from my iPhone!

Today was a mixed bag. On one side, today we tested out a new camera, and it looks like it's pretty much a turd. On the other side however, using a dedicated camera allowed me to play along with music from my phone, which woukd uo being a lot of fun. This was a parricularly special morning for me. I was running about 45 minutes late to work (I will make up the time), which meant better lighting than I usually get in my AM videos, but moreso, this was probably one of the truest heart songs ive been able to capture. A lot of times, I end up too aware of the camera to free myself into the true expression of my heart song, but today fell together very naturally, as though there were no camera. Thid is what it sounds like in my car on the way to work on the non-recording days, so I am very pleased to be able to share this.

This past weekend I played at The Harp in downtown Wilmington, NC. I’ve been uploading the footage from my performance over the course of the week (see @rorykl for my professional music account)…but this part of the event feels like a great fit for the weekend experiences community…I hope I’m not misguided in that :)

It’s not too uncommon to have someone in the audience ask if they can play my guitar for a song, and although I don’t always let it happen, for whatever reason, on this night I felt inclined to acquiesce…more so, I also decided to record the guy, not knowing what he was going to sound like.

By his own admission, he had been drinking whiskey all day. My expectations were fairly low when he took over the stage, mostly just cuz it’s hard to play well after a lot of drinking. Worst case, maybe he breaks a string, I thought…but he didn’t. Instead, he belted out a performance I thought deserved a larger audience, so I’m sharing him here with you!

…it was an awesome weekend filled with the thrill of live performance, the joy of finding another rally talented musician, and the fun of kayaking to Shark Tooth Island with my wife and kids :)

This video doesn't cover the specifics of shopping for a quena, it is focused on getting started once you've selected/acquired one.

If youre interested and want to shop for s quena, here is the general way it goes (in my opinion anyway: higher density materials tend to be more consistent and easier to play. Hard wood or bone ae usually going to be good flutes. Hardwood flutes with a bone tip tend to be the optimal combination of higher density embouchure and lower overall weight. Bamboo is good in spite of its lower density; bamboo flutes have a gentle/wispy sound.

Today I play some free form melodies on the Wind Dancer flute (Roger McGee), and discuss some of my thoughts on the old world architecture that trnds to be found scattered among us around the earth.

Roger McGee's flutes are impressive quality flutes, and it can easily be seen that painstaking efforts have been made to follow the old tradition of hand crafting. These flutes are works of art just to look at, and all the more impressive to listen to. Wind Dancer flutes have even been played by renowned Native American flutist, Carlos Nakai (Navajo & Ute).

This weekend I got to do some hiking, camping, and waterfall diving up in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest Park. I'm not sure if we werein the Blue Ridge Mountains, or if we could just see them, but to be sure, we could see them, and they were gorgeous.

We dove into the cold refreshing mountain spring waters at several different falls and pools scattered around the mountain, but this was the only time I got any video of it. There were larger falls and hiking trails, oh man, it was awesome. We wore out our shoulders, legs and backs carrying rucksacks 20miles on the first day, ending up here at Sliding Rock..Just as the sun was setting, we managed to hitch a ride back up to the top of the mountain.

welcome to quenasabor's 21st name that tune contest!
a while back (like june 2021, i think), @quochuy suggested trying something a little easier to get more participation. this is the first free slot ive had since then to try this, so i'm giving it a shot here today...at least, I think this will be a fairly easy one for many.
So, for in case there are multiple guesses, the other suggestion was to wait until contest closes in the 3rd or 4th week (I cant remember which but its on the azl schedule) and enter thr names of all correct guesses into a random name selector! super cool! so I also cant remember if i said "first to name it" in the video or not, but inprobaboy did out of habit. This will not be the case for this one, enter your guess anytime uo until the contest closes!

ok thats it!

thank you!

Another short ine today as we explore a few new melodic lines on the double ocarina, today's video was made a little more interesting by a camera failure half way through recording, and a melodic line reminding me of a Jethro Tull song. Enjoy, and as always, pilamayaye!

First, I apologize this is late, I'm still pretty much OOTO, but i recorded this last week and did the overlays this morning.

With the new house, new neighborhood, new job...and new life in general, it's getting difficult find time like I used to. So to keep this alive and give myself room to keep it maintainable, I'm changing the contest hereforth to a monthly event. I hope you'll all keep guessing, and when things start to slow down a bit here I'll be excited to check out what all you were getting into during this crazy time!

Not much to say on these days, the ethereal hum of the double ocarina really speaks for itself in far better fashion than any wordsI could smith for you here. Note however, I am new to this instrument and most (if not all) observable shortcomings in play are products of the player and not the instrument.

This is the second of two clips I recorded in my empty house before I sold it and said goodbye forever.

I love this Andean tune, among several others, and if I had to choose one to close out this chapter of my life, this would be it.

The other track I recorded in this day was the 9th Name That Tune Contest.

I know I said not long ago that I'd be OOTO for a couple weeks, and that is still the case - Ive jist been sitting on these teo videos for over a week already and had a free moment to post them so I put them up. But if you've commented recently and not yet recieved a response, please know that I'm still ultimately away from my Hive account and will be responding ASAP.

Peace and love, my friends, and happy fluting!

Don't get the wrong idea my friends, I'll still be doing most of these videos while driving 🤣

... but I was lucky enough to record a few videos in our old bedroom while emptying out the house to sell it - and the acoustics were sweet enough even to impress Princess Poppy :)

This round I know will be an easy one, but since - as far as I know - Contest 008 is still unsolved (at least officially, as I know beyond any doubt that @wannabescrapper knows the answer), maybe an easy one is a good thing for this week!

Anyway, y'all know the drill, first to name the tune correctlt gets 500 Ecency Points!

Happy fluting!

Today I had (I think) a really fun idea - instead of strictly trying to figure out songs from memory, what if i put on the radio and try to play along with random songs? It's bound to sound bad for a while, but this couod be a great tool for bettering playing skills. I'm hoping to keep a "Radio Playalong" segment going for long enough to measure some progress, but for now let's just say it will be a periodic thing added in arbitrarily at my whim.

This is the fourth quenasabor Name That Tune contest.

Today I did drop a couple clues in the video, as I suspect this one may be somewhat more difficult - although, playing in real life I have had people come up and say: "is that _____, from the movie _____?"

...so I don't think its impossible, it will just need the right person to hear it...or someone doing research based on the given clues I suppose 🤣

Anyway, that's it, 500EP to the first one who correctly identifies this tune in the comments!

...bringing in @beeber to have this one added to the contest registry :)

Today we talk about some of the changes I made to the Kototo quena before getting into some playing. Pretty much all of today's songs are incomplete as I just find my way around the melodies, but I did get through the full Adventure Time theme and credit songs - allbeit, not without a handful of mistakes. I'm really liking the Kototo, and for $10, you cant beat it!

After getting slightly less-than-optimal reaults from the new notch, I decided to try widening it. At this point I've gotten pretty bold about modifying the notch, because I decided I could always just chop off the notched end, carve a stone bowl, and make this awesome branch into a sweet pipe - it's a win-win at this juncture If the notch works and tuning fails, I'll be back in disappointment country, since I'd have to make some potentially unattractive repairs to turn it back into a solid pipe...so the next steps will be taken with some timidity, although in the end there is no way to face the unknown but to plunge in.
