Cast Dave Hansen has spent his entire life in the fishing community. No really, he actually has. Your Salt Water Guide, four words you should look up in your favorite search engine and see what comes up (after listening to the show of course). He has been one of the pioneers in this industry as the time has gone by with sharing knowledge, helping people catch more fish, and was one of the very first to develop and utilize the app stores for fishing
This show, he takes us through the West Coast of California and Baja Mexico where he gives you tips and tricks to catch some amazing fish from the surf. Ever heard of a Rooster Fish? Yeah....they catch them FROM THE SURF! Absolutely jammed packed full of laughs, knowledge, and trip worthy information here. NEW EPISODE DROP! 7/8/23
Chris Slupczewski from Connecticut has been listening to the show and agreed to come on to share his knowledge of fishing in New England. One thing he said during the interview really stuck out to me: "Minute to learn and a lifetime to master" This is by far one of the most accurate statements about fishing if there ever has been. Chris shared his story and a bunch of knowledge that I know will work no matter where you fish. A fun add to this one was discussing squid fishing! Something I've heard people talk about a little and have seen on social media, but not like this. I'm very thankful that Chris came on to share and I hope this helps you all out there land your next monster catch!

NEW EPISODE DROP 6/30/23
In this sport of surf fishing, it is not a matter if you catch a turtle, it's when. No one is out there trying to catch these remarkable animals, and when you accidentally do, it always feels like a gut punch (well, to me, it does, anyway). Keith Feldman is on the Board of Directors for the Navarre Beach Turtle Conservation Center, and he talks to us about the sea turtles in the Gulf Of Mexico Region that spend time here and what to do when you catch them. I'm learning that there is more of these centers out there for public assistance and that they have an outstanding release to the wild rate, which is great news for these endangered species. Please sit back and enjoy as we talk about sea turtles and fishing with them in the area

Brian Liebelt out of South East Georgia has been fishing up and down the East Coast but a happenstance meeting with a friend got him into making rods. While running a Beach Fishing Guide service in the New York area, his friend had learned how to make rods at Bethesda Naval Hospital and mentioned he should check it out. Fast forward a little while, he started with one, and then it became something more. Now, he is doing it full time and making more and more people dream rod come to life. If you've been thinking about a custom rod (and he makes more than surf rods!), reach out to Brian and let him guide you on your journey. This episode is littered with solid fishing knowledge as well about how Brian does it and it is sure to help you get on a fish!

Alabama beach fishing is outstanding, and when you're coming to town to visit, going out with a guide that knows that area will give you a leg up on the goal of catching. Matt Boyington of Dixey Flats Surf Fishing Excursions is that guy to call, and he comes on the show to help give you some extra pointers to help you catch when in town. A lifelong angler, he has cut his teeth on learning how to catch different species of fish and different areas. When you’re talking long-distance casting and the abilities to do it, you’ll likely hear the name Tommy Farmer of Carolina Cast Pro will come up. Holder of many records and wins of long-cast events, he has been sharing what he knows and how to do it. You’ll find more in-depth information about the hows if you do a simple internet search or a YouTube one, and you’ll indeed walk away knowing more.
In this episode, though, I wanted to go a different route. Mr. Farmer has spoken at length about how he casts, but I didn’t find much about how he fishes. We went down the rabbit hole, and he did not disappoint! He went in-depth about how he fishes off the North Carolina coast and in other areas he has been to. A particular note he shared with me was that he does the same thing no matter where he is fishing. You'll have to check out the episode to get it. It's worth it!

David Huges has been listening to the show for a while, and we set up a time to talk. He opened my eyes to how they fish down there on their coast. One particular point that stood out was how he dropped his baits with his drones. In doing so, he catches big reds, sharks, and several other species. With over 300 miles of coastline at his disposal, he has been fishing in numerous areas and brings all of that knowledge to you to check out and plan on your next fishing trip down there. At the end of the show, he gave an interesting thought to ponder on what scent and the water in your cooler produce. Yeah...it had me up for a while thinking about it. Enjoy the show and the rabbit hole, as it was a glorious one to go down!

I've known JC for about a year, and he has supported the show from the beginning. He has always said I need to throw lures and jigs in the surf, and after this episode, I understand why. HE CATCHES A TON OF FISH ON THEM!
Using lures has been around for more years than I have been alive, and I still have a hard time getting out there and throwing them, well, until recently, that is. Thanks to Beach Bum Lures and the Cody from Go Fish Australia episodes, I have become more comfortable with them and improving each time. JC has been throwing them since youth and marched to the sound of his drum by modifying them to suit his actions. He loves throwing the Goofy Jig/Banana Jig in the surf and explained in detail how to do it. I don't know about you, but after searching for ways to throw one in the surf and coming up empty, they just sat in my tackle box waiting. Not anymore! I plan on getting out there with mine and getting them swimming ASAP! Thank you, JC, for coming on the show and being a part of it! I appreciate you and your time more than you know.

Blake & Rob of the Hillbillies Fishing Crew came on the show and gave an in-depth view of land-based shark fishing off the North Carolina coast. A 100% catch, tag (when/if able), and release team ready to put you in the harness for the fight of a lifetime! What little I know if this side of fishing, they helped fill in. Yet again, an LBSF team is out there explaining what they do, how they do it, and why they do it. This is one of the crews that is doing it right. LBSF is not something that should be feared but experienced. When done properly, the shark swims off to live its life, and everyone goes away with a win. When done improperly, the shark dies, and people can get hurt. Hope on in and check out what the Hillbillies Guide Service team is doing and pick up some tips for your next trip out. If you're in North Carolina and want to experience land-based shark fishing, hit them up and schedule your charter today! It's coming up on big shark season!

The fishers in Nova Scotia offers a wild diversity and can fit into any angler's style. While we were recording this episode, he told me that he had been out fishing for Atlantic Salmon with his fly rod, and it is possible to catch many different species there from the sand. He also gave some great tips for new anglers and ways to get yourself set up for success if you come up there and fish.

I just completed two-weekend tournaments, and I am wiped out! The good news is that I came home with some new knowledge and a couple of stories to share. I want to thank the entire Lewis family, the Kids Can Fish Foundation team, the sponsors, and the volunteers who made the SSI Running of the bulls tournament so successful. It was a great time, and I look forward to next year. Fishing in the Atlantic always offers new challenges, and this one was no different. Great time and a lot of work to find those fish. Walking away with the "King of the Smalls" crown will be a memory forever etched in my mind.
Perdido Blane and Lost Key Outdoors, thank you for running yet another successful tournament. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make this a reality, and you all did it. Thank you to all of the sponsors that stepped up to support the event and the two charities (The Reel Hero's and Jamie's House) that were chosen.
I kept this episode a little shorter than normal, and it was filled with plenty of things I learned from the mistakes I made. Everyone learns from fishing, and it is important to do that constantly. If you know it all, I hope you're sharing that knowledge so we can all try and catch up. Next year, I will be doing these tournaments again with Abby, and we will be working on perfecting our craft. Until then, I hope you enjoy this episode and can give me the feedback I asked for. My feet will thank you!

I cannot believe that it has already been a full year since I started this show! It has not only been fun for me, but absolutely eye opening with the amount of knowledge that it has brought to me for fishing. Each guest has given a nugget or two that has been helpful for me and I can only hope that it was helpful for you too! This week, it is a short episode going over the last few that we did with some "lessons learned" from each one. I'm likely going to do these quick ones to do a take away for knowledge. I will also be sharing the episode from last year during the week for you all to check out again. A refresher never hurt anyone!
We will also talk about downsizing for the fall/winter time fishing. This episode was actually supposed to drop while I was away but I didn't upload the audio (oops) so its a couple weeks old. More great stuff coming and if you have any recommendations or want to come on the show, reach out to me and we will make it work!

Tom from Kids Can Fish Foundation comes on the show and tells us all about how it began and the journey it has been on to this day! A perfect throw with a cast net and a comment of "girls can fish" started a chain reaction that sparked the birth of Kids Can Fish. Tom tells us about how he started fishing and how he does it in his area of Georgia. With the upcoming SSI Running of the Bulls Charity Tournament, he really hammered home how impactful that the foundation has been since its birth. You'll walk away from this episode with some knowledge about fishing there in the Georgia area, and you'll especially see how this foundation has been doing so many great things for kids and the fishing community as a whole.

Tim Still with Beach Bum Lures comes on the show and explains all about his custom built lures/jigs and then takes it a step further by putting on a master class on throwing them for different species! I've constantly struggled with throwing lures in the surf and always find myself going back to a Rapala or spoon. That's because I never spent the time to ask the questions that I didn't know I needed to ask. This episode, Tim answered all of those questions without me even having to ask! I learned how to fish these killer lures through this episode that is sure to get all of us catching more fish! You won't want to miss any minute of this!

David Loflin (SaltSippi Fishing) and JR Cleghorn (Mississippi Salt) came on the show for a dynamic duo attack on surf fishing and kayak fishing in that area! The results were PERFECTION! These gentlemen have practiced for hours on the water and shown that they know what they are talking about. With that, they also stick to the mentality of constantly learning and evolving to become better anglers, so they are successful when they go out. David broke down how he caught red drum and speckled trout from his boat and the surf, and JR brought it all together with his outing in kayaks completing the same thing. While one wouldn't think of Mississippi right away for surf fishing, this episode explains how to be successful and even gives you a leg up on a few spots. But you'll have to listen to it to get the secret codes. You can check out David's YouTube here: SaltSippi Fishing and JR's YouTube here: Mississippi Salt. Both will get you on the fish!

The show went west this week....to the Pacific Ocean. That right! We are talking with Vincent Chiofalo of Battlestar Tackle & Vince Goes Fishing out of San Luis Obispo, California where he drops some MAJOR knowledge bombs. Vince has lived & traveled up and down the west coast while fishing along the way. A sustenance fisherman, he wants to live within 5 miles of where he gets his food and has found his ways to do it. From the ocean, he started out learning via YouTube and after getting a mentor, he really dialed his game way up. So much that when he started seeing things that were lacking for him to become a better angler, he started redesigning tackle & gear, and eventually started selling it. Thus, Battlestar Tackle was created and has been rolling ever since. This episode is LOADED with tips, tricks, and lessons learned from Vince that is going to help just about anyone become better at catching. I'm already loading up my.....well, you'll have to listen to the show to know.

Alex Lines, creator and owner of the fishing line company known as True Braid comes on the show to tell us about his fishing experience while living in Cape Cod & Maryland and all about his braided fishing line known as True Braid. I learned quite a bit from this episode about braid and how it is manufactured. I've only used braided line since going to the surf/salt water for its strength and sensitivity but I never really looked into how it was made. Manufactured in Japan, this braided line has shown great strength and durability since I have spooled it up on my lines.
Alex also was very open about a recent event where he found out a certain color line wasn't holding up to par and he pulled it from production to be fixed. Customer centric is how he drives it and has been maintaining a cult like following since it began. Affordable, strong, and dependable are solid words to describe this and I hope that you'll enjoy the episode!

International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST) 2022 put on by the American Sportfishing Association is complete and what a show it was! With so many booths and companies, there could be a years worth of podcast episodes, but we are going to talk about some notables. First, thank you to Fishbites for bringing me onto the prostaff team and inviting me to ICAST. I am extremely thankful and grateful for the opportunity y'all have given me. This show is stacked with 18 different products and quick hits about them. Over the next few weeks, I will be using some of their gear (and attempting to acquire others from these companies) and bringing you reviews of them. Each of the companies are tagged on social media in this post, and their website is linked via my Transistor page for this episode. I highly recommend checking them out as they definitely have something to offer for all anglers. I hope you enjoy!

My fishing buddy Justin Reed finally agreed to come on the show and talk to us about how he does surf fishing. After living in Alabama for years, he moved down to the Panhandle and really focused in on surf fishing. That knowledge gained is shared through this episode as we talk about how he fished with set rigs and how he does things while walking the beach with lures (specifically top water and jerk bait). He has proved his skills over and over again while broadcasting it on his YouTube Channel: Justin Reed Fishing. I hope you enjoy each piece he drops as I picked up a few things I didn't know, and I fish with him constantly. He's holding out on info!

Brian Sorrell (Deefield Fabrication) and Nick Bergman (Surf Hippie) came on the show during a live event and talked to us about fishing in North Carolina and their surf carts & surf fishing fabrications. This episode was littered with good information about how they fish the surf and compared it to their recent fishing here in the Panhandle of Florida during the 2022 Pompano Showdown hosted by Lost Key Outdoors and Blane "Perdido Blane". While we were live, they explained so much about their creations and the thought process behind them. With new equipment coming out for purchase, they held nothing back and even explained why sometimes its better to stick with your current cart or to go with a new build. That's just a small tidbit of information that this episode is packed with! Hope you have your notepad ready!

SORD Fishing Products team of Steven, Connor, and Joe come on the show and takes us through their journey of fishing and the current product line. The team covers all aspects of saltwater fishing and bring their experiences to the episode. While discussing using cut bait, they drop a nice nugget about bait selection that isn't overly used in the surf that is an outstanding option (I know I'm picking some up for my cooler). The SORD product line is truly outstanding (I own a blade and love it, I'm not sponsored by them) and a great addition to any angler's arsenal of blades. They also have pliers and...well...you'll have to listen to hear about some more info inside. You definitely cannot go wrong with SORD Fishing Products.

Though the episode is littered with tidbits of knowledge, he also unveiled his brand new 7' Inshore Dagger and the 8'6 Dagger. Both are a great addition to the shop. While there, did you know that Ninja Tackle is also Ninja "Tac"tical? That's right! You'll have to listen in though to find out more.

James Pemberton of Frisky Fins has been working hard to build his brand and it has paid off. You know his name from both his rods and his rigs. When you see those, you instantly know you're getting quality equipment for fishing with no compromise or shortcut taken. James takes us down the road of where he started fishing, how he sets his gear up to successfully catch fish, how he creates his rods, how his rigs are made (he literally tells you all of it), and down the rabbit hole of knowledge. A truly great episode with a great person.

Tony takes us down the journey from his youth growing up through today where he is a successful businessman and family man. What started out as an idea, became his passion, and Fishgum was born from it. He spent years making the bait in his garage (with a few uninvited critters) and has had a following ever since. Before that though, he was doing YouTube, sharing his experiences with the world on surf fishing. While he was educating all of those that followed his channel, he was working on creating his bait and sharing his journey as he followed his faith. Ostracized several times for that, he has never waivered in speaking openly about his religion & beliefs while still showing how he fishes. After a few times of fishing with some "very expensive" bait (aka, lobster tail), crawfish, and fishgum-infused "items", he was dubbed the Mad Scientist. I hope you have a notepad ready because there is A LOT of information in this show that is sure to help you catch more fish.

Larry Grossman has been fly fishing for over 40 years and was a guide in Colorado that consistently put people on fish. Now he lives in the Panhandle of Florida and is bringing that knowledge to the surf! The New Jersey native got heavily involved in the fly fishing community in Yellowstone National Park and fell in love with the sport. While living his live in Colorado, he became a guide and started teaching fly fishing. Now that he is here, he is finding ways to fly fish here in the surf and drops a bunch of knowledge to help us get it out there and do it. His biggest piece of advice, "Don't be intimidated".
He is also sharing his knowledge via his YouTube Channel "The Grumpy Panhandle Fisherman" so you can get a head start on planning. Sit back and enjoy!

A couple weeks ago, we talked with Allison Stattner about Ike Jime and we felt it was important to bring it out of the depths of that episode to your fingers quickly. Again, this process is not about dispatching your catch. It is a process in food management.
Be warned, the Ike Jime portion of the episode does have some graphic descriptions of dispatching a fish. What I thought was a way of proper dispatching, was much more than that. Jacob Williams is an avid listener of the show and also our Friday Night Live Cast (Panhandle Fishing Report). He didn't think I'd actually talk to him and record and episode! He has prided himself in calling him our "troll" but in reality, he's a great dude. We spent a good time talking about fishing and his techniques but it got really interesting when we started talking about throwing cast nets. He's a great guy and I'm thankful that he let me record him and share some of his knowledge.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this show is all about spreading knowledge! I want you to catch fish when you go out there and these episodes all have something that should give you some help along the way. If there is more I can bring you for knowledge, don't hesitate to let me know and I will do my best to find something. If you want to be on the show, reach out to me and we can set something up. Wes Motsinger has been making rods and upgrading reels for customers but took us into the details and the why's of the process. I personally learned a bunch about my gear just from talking with him and how to get things a little better. No where in this episode is the "you need to buy a custom rod" said. It is a great bit of information about how they are made and the information about them. Not only that, the discussion about reels and his servicing process for the ones that are sent to him made me realize how far off I am on getting my gear where it should be. A great episode and hopefully, it brings you some knowledge!

Jack Moran talks us through the world of shark, kayak, and surf fishing as he has been through it! He started out fishing as a kid with his family and it became his obsession. After he caught his first shark in the surf (Atlantic Sharpnose), he knew that shark fishing was for him. He has always loved sharks and everything about them growing up. Now, he has found a way to enjoy sharing his passion by educating and leading guided shark fishing trips through Navarre Beach Shark Fishing. Not only hashe proved his skills there, but he has also been dropping knowledge on kayak fishing through his YouTube Channel Yakin With Jack for a long time.
When he isn't shark fishing or in the yak, he can be found on the surf slaying pompano, whiting, blues, and so much more. I had a lot of fun talking with him and definitely learned quite a bit more about how to properly shark fish safely.

Years past, the local tackle shops were whispered to be the place to avoid as they would just over charge you for gear and wasn't the best place to find a deal for gear. Fast forward to now and it is far from that. The local shops are one of the best places to get knowledge and they have no intention of running up the till on what you're buying. Simon, the manager of Emerald Coast Bait & Tackle, gives us a glimpse into pricing and how some things work at the shop. He also gives us some comparison about fishing in Charleston, S.C. to here in the Panhandle since he arrived.

The mighty Gulf Coast Nation team was out in the Portofino Beach area recently hosting their meet & greet and I was able to finally see these gentlemen in their element. Dylan, Adam, and Blaine showed how they do the voodoo that they do while keeping the highest level of motivation I've seen since my time in the Marines. They leverage their knowledge of fishing and past catches to help bring their customers the catch of a lifetime. All that attended were able to see them bring in several sharks and a few were able to help the team bring some in.
This recording was live at the beach while they were working. I wish you could have seen the things happening as one of the fishing lights started to droop and Adam & Blaine jumped into action. The conversation continued on and we were able to bring you this interview without interruption. We talk about sharking, tips, why going out on a charter is worth it, and about current FWC regulations.
These guys are the real deal and an absolute blast to spend time with. If you've ever thought about going on a shark charter, you won't be disappointed. Check out Gulf Coast Nation to set up your charter ASAP! They are already filling up next summers adventures.
