Introduction
Throughout my lessons, I talk about Mindfulness and Self-Reflection. Before digging into what it means to be mindful, I always thought of mindfulness as something yogis did. It always seemed to me that mindfulness was reserved for the enlightened. I have worried that those who hear me talk about mindfulness will think I’m talking about being spiritual or trying to talk about doing yoga correctly. If you believe that, please give me a chance to explain what I mean when discussing mindfulness and self-reflection.
The more I understood what it means to be mindful, the more I understood the power of it and how important the practice is to making progress in your life.
I would like to take some time to explain what I mean when I say “be mindful,” how it helps you gain strength through your struggles, techniques for practicing mindfulness and self-reflection, and how to develop coping skills through self-reflection.
Mindfulness refers to the practice of being present and aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. It involves paying attention to the present moment, observing your thoughts and emotions without reacting to them, and staying focused on the current experience.
Self-reflection, on the other hand, involves examining your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to gain insight and understanding about oneself. It involves taking a step back and objectively analyzing your thoughts, feelings, and actions to identify patterns, strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
Both mindfulness and self-reflection are important practices that can help individuals develop self-awareness, manage stress and anxiety, and improve their overall well-being. By being mindful, individuals can learn to regulate their emotions and respond to situations in a more thoughtful and deliberate manner. Self-reflection can help individuals identify areas for personal growth and gain a deeper understanding of their values, beliefs, and goals.
The Power of Mindfulness and
Gaining Strength Through Struggles
Mindfulness is a powerful tool that can help us gain strength through struggles. When we are going through difficult times, it is easy to get caught up in our negative thoughts and emotions. We may feel overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious, and these feelings can make it difficult to stay positive and find a way forward.
However, mindfulness can help us to step back from our thoughts and emotions and observe them from a more objective perspective. This can help us to gain a greater sense of clarity and perspective, which can in turn help us to find solutions to our problems and move forward with greater confidence and resilience.
One way to practice mindfulness is through present awareness. Being presently aware involves focusing on the present moment, without judgment or distraction. By doing so, we can train our minds to be more present and focused, which can help us to better cope with difficult emotions and situations.
In addition to being purposefully aware, there are many other ways to practice mindfulness in our daily lives. For example, we can try to stay present and focused during daily tasks, such as washing dishes or walking the dog. We can also practice mindfulness by being more aware of our thoughts and emotions, and by taking the time to reflect on our experiences and learn from them.
Ultimately, the power of mindfulness lies in its ability to help us stay grounded and focused, even in the midst of difficult times. By cultivating a greater sense of awareness and presence, we can build the strength and resilience we need to overcome life's challenges and thrive in the face of adversity.
One example of a person who has used the power of mindfulness to gain strength through struggles is the musician and actor, Jared Let

Developing resilience and strength through challenges is essential for personal growth and well-being. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from difficult experiences, adapt to change, and handle adversity gracefully and with composure. Strength is the ability to persevere through difficult situations and become stronger on the other side.
Challenges are a natural part of life, and everyone experiences them in some form or another. Developing resilience and strength through challenges helps us cope with difficult situations, learn from our experiences, and become better equipped to handle future challenges.
I would like to tell you a story about Stephen Hawking, who was a world-renowned physicist and cosmologist known for his groundbreaking work on black holes and the nature of time. Hawking was diagnosed with a rare and debilitating motor neuron disease at 21. Doctors initially gave him only a few years to live, but he defied their predictions and went on to live for over 50 more years.
Despite his physical limitations, Hawking continued to work and make groundbreaking contributions to the field of physics. He used a wheelchair and a computerized speech synthesizer to communicate but never let his disability hold him back. He once said, "My disabilities have not been a significant handicap in my field, which is theoretical physics. Indeed, they have helped me in a way by shielding me from lecturing and administrative work that I would otherwise have been involved in."
Hawking's resilience and strength were evident not only in his professional accomplishments but also in his personal life. He faced numerous health challenges throughout his life, including pneumonia and a tracheotomy that robbed him of his ability to speak entirely. Despite these setbacks, he continued to work and inspire others through his writing, lectures, and advocacy for scientific education and research.
Stephen Hawking's story is a testament to the power of resilience and strength in overcoming adversity. Despite facing significant physical and health challenges, he remained focused on his work, made groundbreaking contributions to science, and inspired countless others through his perseverance and determination.
Why Is Developing Resilience and Strength So Important
Coping with Stress
Developing resilience and strength can be incredibly helpful in coping with stress. Life can be full of unexpected challenges and difficulties that can cause stress, but with resilience and strength, you can learn to manage and cope with these stressors in a healthy way.
Resilience involves being able to adapt and bounce back from difficult situations, while strength involves having the mental and emotional fortitude to face challenges head-on. When you develop these qualities, you become better equipped to handle stress and overcome adversity.
One of the key ways that resilience and strength help you cope with stress is by giving you the ability to regulate your emotions. With resilience, you can learn to remain calm and focused in the face of stress, while strength gives you the ability to stay positive and motivated. This can be especially helpful during times of uncertainty or when facing difficult situations.
Additionally, resilience and strength can help you to maintain perspective and see the bigger picture. When you are able to stay grounded and focused on your goals, you can more easily navigate stress and avoid getting bogged down in the details.
By building resilience and strength, you also become more adept at problem-solving and finding solutions to challenging situations. This can help to reduce stress by giving you a sense of control and confidence in your ability to handle difficult situations.
Finally, resilience and strength can help you to cultivate a sense of gratitude and positivity, even in the face of
HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED
There are several reasons why people may have difficulty staying motivated. A few reason are:
These are just a few of the reasons why people may have difficulty staying motivated.
Before we go into how to stay motivated, lets first talk about what it means to stay motivated.
Staying motivated means having the drive, energy, and enthusiasm to achieve your goals and pursue your dreams. It involves having a clear sense of purpose and direction, as well as the determination and resilience to overcome obstacles and challenges along the way.
When you are motivated, you are more likely to stay focused on your goals, put in the effort required to achieve them, and persist in the face of setbacks and obstacles. Motivation can come from a variety of sources, including personal values and beliefs, intrinsic interests and passions, and external rewards and recognition.
Motivation is essential for personal and professional growth, as it helps you maintain the discipline and commitment required to pursue your goals over the long term. Without motivation, it can be easy to become discouraged, lose focus, and give up on your dreams.
Staying motivated requires a combination of self-awareness, self-discipline, and self-care. It involves setting realistic goals, developing a plan of action, staying organized and focused, and regularly assessing your progress and adjusting your approach as needed. It also involves taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being, as burnout and exhaustion can quickly drain your motivation.
Overall, staying motivated is about maintaining a positive mindset and a sense of purpose and direction, even in the face of challenges and setbacks. With the right mindset and strategies, you can cultivate and sustain your motivation, and achieve your goals and dreams.
Staying motivated can be challenging, but there are several strategies that can help a person maintain their motivation over time.
Set Clear and Achievable Goals
Setting clear and achievable goals is one of the most important things you can do to stay motivated. Here's why:
HOW TO OVERCOME FEAR
In the early days of her career, Oprah was often nervous and afraid when she had to speak in front of an audience. She would worry about forgetting her lines or stumbling over her words, and she often felt physically ill before taking the stage.
However, Oprah was determined to overcome her fear of public speaking. She began to take speech classes and practice her delivery in front of small groups of friends and colleagues. She also sought the help of a therapist to work through her anxiety and build her confidence.
As she gained more experience and success, Oprah's fear of public speaking began to diminish. She became a skilled and confident speaker, delivering powerful and inspiring speeches to audiences around the world.
Today, Oprah is not only one of the most successful talk show hosts in history but also a celebrated motivational speaker and philanthropist. Her story is a reminder that even the most successful people can struggle with fear and anxiety but that with hard work and determination, it is possible to overcome those fears and achieve great things.
Before we get in to how to overcome your fears, lets first talk about what is fear. Fear is an emotional response to a perceived threat or danger. It is a basic human emotion that is often characterized by feelings of apprehension, anxiety, and nervousness. Fear can be triggered by a variety of stimuli, including physical danger, emotional trauma, or even just the anticipation of something unpleasant. The experience of fear can vary in intensity and duration, and it can be influenced by a number of factors such as personal experiences, cultural background, and genetics. Fear is a natural and adaptive response that can help us to avoid danger and stay safe, but excessive or irrational fear can be detrimental to our mental and physical health.
There are several strategies that can help you overcome fear:
Face Your Fears
Facing your fears is an effective way to overcome fear because it allows you to confront the source of your fear and develop coping strategies to manage your anxiety. When you avoid the things that scare you, it can reinforce your fear, making it more difficult to overcome. However, by facing your fears, you give yourself the opportunity to learn that you can handle the situation and that the fear may not be as bad as you anticipated.
Gradually exposing yourself to the thing or situation that scares you, in a safe and controlled manner, can help reduce your fear over time. This is known as exposure therapy, and it is a commonly used technique in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), a type of psychotherapy that focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.
Through exposure therapy, you learn to tolerate the anxiety and discomfort associated with facing your fear, rather than avoiding it. This can help you build confidence and resilience, and over time, you may find that the fear loses its power over you.
One famous story of someone facing their fears to overcome fear is that of astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on the moon.
Before he became an astronaut, Armstrong was a pilot in the U.S. Navy, flying combat missions in the Korean War. During one mission, his plane was hit by enemy fire, and he had to eject from the aircraft. The experience left him shaken and afraid, and he developed a fear of crashing or losing control of his plane.
However, Armstrong was determined to overcome his fear and continue flying. He enrolled in a test pilot program, where he was exposed to some of the most challenging and dangerous flying conditions imaginable. Through exposure to these situations and rigorous training, Armstrong learned to manage his fear and became a skilled and confident pilot.
When Armstrong was selected for the Apollo 11 mission, he faced a new set of
HOW TO DEAL WITH STRESS
There was once a legendary musician named Freddie Mercury, the lead vocalist of the band Queen. Freddie was known for his electrifying performances and powerful stage presence, but he was also known for his perfectionism and intense work ethic, which often led to stress and exhaustion.
One of the most stressful periods of Freddie's life came during the making of Queen's album "A Night at the Opera," which included their iconic song "Bohemian Rhapsody." The song's complex arrangement and production required countless hours of recording and editing, which left Freddie feeling drained and overwhelmed.
To cope with the stress, Freddie turned to one of his favorite pastimes: cooking. He would often retreat to the kitchen and experiment with different recipes, finding solace in the creative process and the act of nurturing others through food.
In fact, Freddie's love of cooking was so strong that he once considered opening a restaurant after retiring from music. He said, "If I wasn't a rock star, I would be a chef. I love cooking - it's like therapy for me."
Ultimately, Freddie's passion for cooking provided a much-needed outlet for his stress and helped him to stay grounded and centered during some of the most challenging periods of his career.
Stress is a natural physical and psychological response to the demands placed on an individual. It is a normal part of life and can be caused by a variety of factors, including work-related pressures, financial concerns, relationship problems, health issues, and major life changes. Stress triggers a "fight or flight" response in the body, which releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones can cause physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, rapid breathing, muscle tension, and sweating. If stress is prolonged or chronic, it can lead to negative health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, and weakened immune system function. It is important to manage stress effectively in order to maintain good mental and physical health.
Stress is a natural part of life, but it can also be very difficult to manage. Here are some tips on how to deal with stress:
Identify The Source of Stress
Keep a stress journal: Write down the situations, people, and events that cause you stress. Note the physical and emotional symptoms you experience when you're stressed.
Pay attention to your body: Notice when you're feeling tense, anxious, or overwhelmed. Try to identify what triggers these feelings.
Take a self-assessment: Reflect on your life and consider what areas are causing you the most stress. Is it work, family, relationships, health, finances, or something else?
Seek feedback: Ask friends, family members, or colleagues if they have noticed any patterns in your behavior when you're stressed. They may be able to provide insight into what triggers your stress.
Use a stress management tool: Try using a stress management tool, such as a stress questionnaire or stress assessment tool, which can help you identify the sources of stress in your life.
Remember that identifying the source of stress is just the first step in managing it effectively. Once you have identified the source of stress, you can begin to develop strategies to manage and reduce it.
Exercise
There was once a famous actor named Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, known for his impressive physique and action-packed movie roles. Despite his tough-guy persona, Dwayne was not immune to stress, particularly during the early days of his career when he struggled to make a name for himself in Hollywood.
To cope with the stress, Dwayne turned to exercise, which became a cornerstone of his daily routine. He would wake up early every morning to hit the&
YOUR DREAM IS POSSIBLE
The first part of accomplishing any dream is believing it is possible. If you do not believe in yourself, you start with a negative. But your dream is still possible.
I want to share a few steps I take every time I take on a new challenge that initially seems daunting.
Find Someone Who Did It In The Past
The first thing I do is find someone who did what I wanted to do in the past or at least overcame similar struggles. Finding similar stories can be very motivating. It lets your brain say, "if they did it, maybe I can too." If you can have this thought and believe it, you are well on your way to making your dream possible. No matter how big of a challenge you want to take on, I guarantee you someone has taken more significant and more challenging goals with worse starting conditions and has become successful.
If you do not believe me, look at J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. Before she became a successful author, Rowling was a struggling single mother living on government welfare in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Rowling continued to pursue her passion for writing. She worked on the first Harry Potter book in coffee shops and cafes, often writing in longhand because she couldn't afford a typewriter. After multiple rejections from publishers, Rowling finally found a publisher willing to take a chance on her book.
The first Harry Potter book was published in 1997 and became an instant success, with the series becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Rowling's books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into over 80 languages.
In addition to her literary success, Rowling has become a philanthropist and advocate for social justice causes. She has donated millions of dollars to charity and has been recognized for her work for children's welfare, multiple sclerosis research, and other causes.
Another inspiring true story of success in the face of challenges is that of Oprah Winfrey. Born into poverty in rural Mississippi, Winfrey overcame a difficult childhood marked by abuse and instability to become one of the most successful and influential media personalities of all time.
Winfrey began her career in media as a local news anchor and talk show host, eventually landing her nationally syndicated talk show, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," in 1986. The show became a cultural phenomenon and ran for 25 years, making Winfrey one of the world's wealthiest and most powerful women.
Throughout her career, Winfrey has faced numerous challenges, including overcoming poverty and abuse in her early years, battling weight issues and health problems, and navigating complex personal relationships in the public eye. Despite these challenges, she has remained committed to her goals and has used her platform to advocate for causes she is passionate about, including education, women's rights, and racial justice.
Today, Winfrey is a respected media mogul, philanthropist, and activist with over $2.5 billion net worth. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and hard work and a reminder that success is possible despite significant challenges.
One more motivating story in the face of adversity is that of Nick Vujicic, an Australian motivational speaker, and author who was born without arms and legs. Despite facing numerous challenges and discrimination throughout his life, Vujicic has become a powerful voice for hope and inspiration, using his experiences to encourage others to embrace their potential.
Growing up, Vujicic struggled to accept his physical disability and often felt isolated and depressed. However, with the support of his family and a deep faith in God, he overcame his challenges and found his calling as a motivational speaker and author.
Today, Vujicic travels the world speaking to audiences of all ages and b
HOW TO MAKE MORE MONEY
I rarely run into someone who tells me they have enough money and do not want more. More often than not, I meet people who tell me they are living from paycheck to paycheck. This is due to inflation, stagnant or significantly few wage increases, economic recession, and many other reasons that can quickly get a person down. During an economic meeting I was fortunate enough to attend, some of the people I spoke with asked me what I thought about passive income and, in their terms ", get-rich-quick scams that people sale." After speaking with them for a while, I quickly realized they were not asking me these questions to be rude or condescending. They wanted to know if there was a way people found where they could make money quicker than working a nine-to-five and climbing the corporate ladder. I'm about to tell you the following things are an extended version of what I told them. I hope you find it useful for you and your family. I want everyone to live in prosperity and not have to worry about where their next meal will come from or how they will pay all of their bills at the end of the month without having to get into more debt.
First, I want to tell you out of the gate that there is no get-rich-quick method I am aware of. I know you may find this upsetting, but if you stick with me, I'll show you how real wealth is created. Chasing a quick buck or trying to do something only once and expecting passive income forever is unrealistic. Sometimes telling people this is hard because it is easy to be fooled by so many people seeming to be successful by just creating a YouTube channel or becoming an influencer on a social media app. I know a few people who have made a decent living doing things like this, but if you were to see how much work goes into these kinds of things, you would quickly realize that you could probably work less at a full-time job and make more money.
A house less than five miles from one of my properties is the YouTube house. This neighborhood is very wooded and peaceful, and there is very little noise for the most part. This house has become known as a YouTube house to the locals because a successful YouTube channel owner owns it, and they use it solely to film YouTube. You always know when they are changing sets because the property becomes filled with construction workers who are changing out the interior.
Based on what you see on TV, you may see these two people and think they just got a phone, some simple lighting, and started filming themselves. However, I can tell you firsthand that they have a crew of over 15 people who help create the show every day. They have writers, producers, editors, sound and film tech, and many others who work together to ensure their performance looks simple yet successful to their demographics. Most people do not see all the work that goes into producing one show. I'm not saying you can become a success with just a phone, good lighting, and some editing software. Still, what your tv show or channel lacks in professional production, it better make up in amazing content that will produce loyal followers that can overlook all the other media provide.
So if I tell you that making quick money is not a sustainable, realistic option, how do I suggest you make more money? I'm glad you asked.
One of my favorite quotes about money comes from Jim Rohn, who said, "You don't get paid by the hour. You get paid for the value you bring to the hours." Based on this quote, assuming that if I wanted to get paid more, I needed to bring more value would be safe. Value can be very subjective; however, it has an economic measurement, which is how much people will pay for the value you bring. Let me give you some real-life examples.
Have you ever wondered why some professional athletes get paid millions of dollars a year to play a game once a week, yet teachers in America sometimes get pai
DISCIPLINE vs. FOCUS
Introduction
What is the difference between discipline and focus, and why does it matter so much? The confusion between these two terms has caused some heartache when trying to become successful. People have confused one for the other and misused them incorrectly, thus delaying their progress. I would like to review the differences and provide information on how best to use them.
Discipline
I would like to start with the basics of defining discipline to ensure we discuss the same thing. One of the best definitions I have ever heard was from Jim Rohn. He said, "Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment" This definition inspires me because it reminds me of when I need to be disciplined. I have learned that it does not take much to have a great idea; if you talk to someone long enough, they will tell you about theirs, but it takes effort to put a plan in place, with goals, to make that idea come to life. Once you have the plan in place, this is where discipline is needed. It is when you start having to put action into place to accomplish that goal.
Discipline involves self-control, self-restraint, and the ability to regulate behavior to achieve a particular goal or objective. Discipline can be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual and can be applied in various areas of life, such as education, sports, work, and personal development. It is often seen as a critical element in achieving success, requiring consistency, dedication, and focus.
I heard Mike Tyson once say in an interview that "discipline is doing things you don't want to do and still do it as you love it" Mike Tyson is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers ever. He had a remarkable career in professional boxing, with a record of 50 wins (44 by knockout) and six losses. If there is someone who can credibly talk about discipline and not just talk about it in a book, I think Mike Tyson ranks among one of the most disciplined people in the world.
However, if you prefer a more scholarly definition, Elbert Hubbard. He said, "Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not."
Focus
Now that we know what discipline is, let's talk about focus.
Do you ever find yourself struggling to concentrate on a task, getting easily distracted, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of daily life? In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to lose focus and become sidetracked by various distractions, such as social media, email, and other interruptions. However, focus is essential to achieve your goals and succeeding personally and professionally.
What is focus? Focus directs your attention and energy toward a specific task, goal, or objective. It involves blocking distractions and other irrelevant information and devoting your mental and physical resources to the task. Focus is a skill that can be developed and improved with practice, and it is essential for achieving success in many areas of life.
Why is focus important? Focus is vital for several reasons. First, it allows you to prioritize and organize your thoughts and actions, which can help you achieve your goals more efficiently. When you focus, you can use your time and energy more effectively and are less likely to become distracted or procrastinate.
Second, focus helps you fully engage with the task, increasing your motivation, productivity, and creativity. When you are entirely focused on a mission, you are more likely to come up with new ideas, solve problems, and make progress toward your goals.
Finally, focus can help you to reduce stress and anxiety by enabling you to stay in the present moment and avoid worrying about the past or the future. Focusing on what you can control and influence in th
WHAT DOES FAITH HAVE TO DO WITH SUCCESS?
You may wonder why we are talking about Faith or what Faith has to do with being Relentless or accomplishing your goals. Give me a few minutes to explain, and I think you will understand by the end.
The Bible says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). This is probably one of the best definitions of Faith I have found. The Bible breaks it up into two parts. The first part says it is the “substance of things hoped for.” Hope is a powerful word. According to the Oxford dictionary, Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a sure thing to happen. If you desire and expect something to happen, your actions will align with that change. Let me give you an example of how this works.
Let’s say you are driving down a dark foggy road and see a sign that says, “sharp turn ahead .”Immediately you gain Faith that there is a turn up ahead because you believe the sign. Because you believe there is a sharp turn up ahead, you start to slow down and get ready for that turn even though you cannot see it yet. You slow down for a sharp turn you cannot see because you believed in a sign; it is an excellent example of how you would start to change your actions based on your expectations that something will happen.
Let’s take this example one step further. Imagine you are a child, and your mom says, “if you are good, you can have ice cream when we get home.” You would immediately become more aware of your actions so that you don’t ruin your chances for ice cream. You may even exaggerate your good behavior. You believe your mom when she said you could have ice cream. This would be Faith. Your desire for ice cream is Hope, which is a part of Faith.
The second part of the definition provided by the Bible says Faith is “the evidence of things not seen .”Let’s revisit the second part of that definition later.
So how does Faith play into your life and becoming a Relentless Person? I’m glad you ask. Faith is essential in three aspects of your Relentless Life journey.
The Beginning
For you to plan anything in your life, you have Faith in it for your plan to have any hope of happening. If you to start a business, you may begin with a business plan. You would plan out as many details as possible before one brick is laid or one dollar is spent on your plan. This is where the second part of Faith comes in. The fact that you are willing to put in the work of setting a business plan together before any action is taken on the plan is “evidence of things not seen.” You have not seen the business up and running yet, but you can see it in your mind.
You can do the same thing with your personal life. If you ever want to accomplish anything in life, you have a much better chance of having it occur if you can first see it in your mind. If you can see yourself accomplishing that dream or goal in your life, you can then start to put a plan together to make it happen. But it all begins with your Faith and belief in yourself. If you don’t have Faith in yourself, you are doomed from the start.
The Middle
While you are on your journey, Faith becomes the most important.
Life is hard, and no matter what you are doing, life will through you curve balls and hit you as many times as it can. I have learned that the more important things you try to accomplish in life, the more challenges will come your way and try to prevent you from achieving your dreams. Sometimes the challenges that come at you will make you feel like you’re the only one that has ever gone through what you have gone through. I can assure you that you are not alone, nor are you the only one that has been through the struggles you may or have faced.
All of these challenges are there to make you stumble, fall, and try to keep you down. O
HAVE TIE-DOWNS IN LIFE
When I was in the Marine Corps, I spent a lot of time on ships for transportation to different countries. The Marines I was with were usually guests on the ship. We would get "voluntold" to do various duties around the ship. We would commonly have to go down to the part of the ship where they kept the AAVs (Amphibious Assault Vehicles) and retighten the tie-downs that prevent the AAV's from sliding all over the ship. If you have ever been on a big ship in the middle of the ocean, you know how much a ship can sway based on the weather and waves. The more these large Navy ships would get into bad weather, the more often we would have to go down and retighten the tie-downs.
You may ask, "what is the big deal about re-rightening the tie-downs?" Several reasons for making sure these tie-downs were a big part of my memory. They were not like a cloth strap you used to tie furniture to your truck. Tie-downs are made of metal with galvanized turnbuckles and are not light. You have to use a tool to turn the turnbuckle several times while sometimes having to get under the AAV's. Each AAV had several tie-downs. Now, you multiply between four and eight tie-downs per AAV by eight AAVs on average, and you can have up to 72 tie-downs you have to tighten anytime the ship goes through lousy weather and rocks too much.
Even though this job seemed monotonous, I knew it was important because I would be in one of these things soon and depended on it to get me to shore safely. These AAVs were very important to every U.S. Marine's survival when storming beaches. If we did not tie these pieces of machinery down correctly, they could quickly run into each other and severely damage other AAVs, equipment, and the Naval ship. An AAV weighs around 64,000 lbs. dry. But I have never been on an AAV that was not loaded. They can carry a MK 19 40MM grenade launcher and a .50-caliber machine gun with a lot of ammo.
Side note: For anyone worried that I am sharing US Military secrets, calm down. All the information I will share is public, and sadly, the US Marine Corps. announced that they will be discontinuing the AAV starting in 2023.
So now that I have gone on telling you about my memories of tie-downs in the Marine Corps, at nauseum, let me provide some reasons why, just like any large military equipment, you need tie-downs so that you do not do damage in your life and reach your goals. Let's talk about three specific tie-downs that can make the most difference.
Things That Are Stable
We, humans, do not like Change. This does not mean that Change is inevitable and you can not prepare yourself for it, but most people do not do well with it. This is the biggest reason most people never reach their goals; for you to accomplish something different, you must do something different. I, for one, have trained my brain to like Change. It challenges me, shows me who I am if the Change is complex, and makes me grow as I maneuver through it to benefit from it as much as possible.
However, there are some things that I like knowing are stable, for the most part. It can be simple things like knowing my car will start in the morning, having enough food to eat, or money to pay my bills. The more things you can make stable in your life, the better. Let's think about this for a second. Let's say your house and car were paid for, in good condition, and you had all the money you needed to live a great life. This kind of setup would allow you to take on additional challenges. Instead of wearing where you're going to get money to fill up your car, feed your kids, or pay your bills, you can turn your attention to things like taking additional courses or seminars in a field that interests you. You could start that blog, business, or new adventure because you "don't have the time."
Having things that are stable in your life is not a bad thin
MOMENTUM
When I was a kid, my mom and I would go to a laundry mat to wash our clothes. There were usually several parents washing clothes at the same time, with several kids running around like the place was a playhouse. My mom would not have any of that. I was made to sit down, play in the corner, or read a book. In my house, children were to be seen and not heard. If you had something to say, you waited until the adults stopped talking, asked your question, and moved out of the way so that adults could get back to work.
The owner of the laundry mat seemed to be an old graunchy man who did not like kids, but for some reason, he was nice to me. He flew remote control airplanes and had elaborate train sets. This man was kind enough to show me how to fly the airplanes and how the trains worked. I was immediately hooked and bought my own remote-control airplanes and had some intense train setups. As an adult I even had a train track set up in my kitchen that went above my kitchen cabinets, blew smoke, made sounds, and had lights. It looked like a train set right out of Mr. Rogers house.
Did you know that a trains on average weigh between 8,000 to 10,000 tons and travel approximately 40 mph. The same trainswould have a momentum between 143,200 and 179,000 ton as it travels. Stopping it would take over a mile. You may be asking “how does the train weight more as it travels.” The reason is because mass and velocity are both directly proportional to the momentum. If you increase either mass or velocity, the object's momentum increases proportionally. If you double the mass or velocity, you double the momentum. So, the faster the train goes, the more it weighs when you try to stop it. Some locomotives can weigh up to 200 tons, have engines with 10,000 horsepower, and can generate more than 60,000 lb-ft of torque. Stopping these machines quickly, once they are at full speed, is almost impossible. But even with all that power, did you know that it does not take much to prevent a train from moving?
A train that is standing still and has a large engine with 10,000 or more horsepower can be prevented from moving with just a piece of urethane that weighs 9 pounds. A spark-proof urethan heavy-duty double wheel chock that is used on trains is 4” high and only 9 pounds. If you put one of these in front of a wheel on the train, it will not go anywhere.
So how does a small thing prevent a massive thing with so much power from moving? The chock prevents momentum from occurring. The power of momentum is not to be underestimated when it comes to trains or anything else that has to move to make progress; this includes you.
Let’s talk about a few things that could be preventing you from gaining momentum and how you can overcome them.
Get Rid of Distractions
We all have distractions in life or things that take us away from accomplishing our goals. The secret is to identify those distractions and get rid of them before they take up too much of your time. Most people go through life like robots, never reflecting on their life and seeing if they could be doing things better. We wake up in the morning, get ready for work, get the kids ready for school, go to work, come home, spend time with the kids, watch some TV, go to bed, and repeat this cycle over and over again without a thought. We start to become comfortable with our cycle of life and tell ourselves that we do not have time to do anything else, so we give up on our dream before we ever start. But if you looked a little closer, you would probably find that, just like the 4” chalk that can stop a train, there are many small activities that you can remove from your life which will allow you to start moving towards you
INTERESTED vs. COMMITTED
Have you ever met someone who had a hundred and one ideas, and every day, they were interested in something else? Or maybe you know someone who always starts something but rarely sees things through. It seems that this kind of behavior is becoming more prevalent today. Everyone wants to be a YouTube star or has the next big idea that will make them a million dollars, but I rarely run into someone who mentions their concept and is in the process of making it happen. They seem interested in the idea, so much so that they have worked out some details in their head but have yet to do any real work towards their plan. They are interested but need to be committed. If you want to get a good picture of the difference between being interested vs. committed, you only have to go as far as looking at a plate of breakfast with eggs and bacon. The chicken who contributed the eggs was interested, but the pig had to go all in for you to have that bacon on your plate.
If you have an idea that you want to see through to the end and are committed to doing so, I would like to give you three suggestions that may help your journey.
Believe In Yourself
Those same people I mentioned earlier who tell everyone about their idea but rarely take any action are usually people who are concerned about what people think about them. They are telling everyone their vision because they hope you see them in a better light because of their bright idea. They are more concerned about what you think about the idea than what they think. They would not need to tell you if they believed in the idea because your opinion would not matter.
I'm not talking about the close friend who is telling you an idea because he wants honest feedback or that person who has accomplished many of their ideas and wants to tell someone so he is held accountable. I'm talking about that friend who never starts on their ideas. Everyone listens and humors them, but no one takes them seriously. That kind of guy is not who you want to be.
You must first believe in yourself and your dream before expecting others to believe in you. The people who get things done rarely spend time telling others what they are doing unless they seek knowledgeable advice on getting them to the next level. They don't have time to worry about what others think because they are too busy making things happen. They are people who spend more time looking for a solution than all the problems that are in their way.
It is a strange thing, the way our mind works. We can not think of something when it is put before us. If I told you not to think of a purple elephant right now, the only image you have in your head is a purple elephant, even though no such thing exists and your rational mind knows it. Our mind works the same way about obstacles that get in the manner of us solving problems. If we always focus on the issues, we will forget that there may be many solutions and act like the world is against us. This is a dangerous road because it can stop your journey and stomp on your dream before you even start. Always look for solutions instead of dwelling on the problems.
Action Is Required
As mentioned earlier, one way to test if you are committed vs. just interested is how much time you spend on the solutions to reach your goal vs. how much time you spend looking at the obstacles. People who are not truly committed will continue to look for ways to justify why they did not reach their goal. They will make every excuse under the sun. They are good at talking the talk but have a hard time walking the walk. You may know people like this. They usually want to tell everyone what they are planning and how their idea is the next big thing since sliced bread. They spend a lot of time trying to convince people how great their idea is and sometimes try to get y
Leadership is one of my favorite subjects. I started reading about leadership when I was a child. Because I wanted to be a U.S. Marine when I was a child, I read a lot about history and how the Marine Corps leaders lead their troops into battle. Then it led me to read about leaders who led countries into battle, like Dwight D. Eisenhower and Churchill. When I got out of the military and started my first company, I became intrigued by great organizational leaders. Then I read about how someone like me could become a leader. This was when I started to learn something. Everything else I read was more of an admiration of someone's abilities, but when I began researching how to become a leader, the lessons I learned became very real.
For someone to become Relentless or live a Relentless life, at some point, you will have to integrate leadership principles into your life. It is almost impossible for someone not to be a leader at some point. Because of this reason, we must spend some time on leadership and what it may mean to you.
One of my favorite definitions of leadership is given by John Maxwell. John says leadership is influence; nothing more, nothing less. I like this definition because it demonstrates how almost everyone can become a leader. If you have a child, or significant other, have a say about others' duties at work, or work around people who look up to you in one way or another, you are a leader. You have the ability to influence others, whether you realize it or not. Being a leader may not even be your choice, but if you look around and know that your actions can influence others, you are a leader. Once you know you are a leader, you can take responsibility for it and determine if you want to be a good or bad leader.
A great leader named Marcus Aurelius Antoninus held the position of Emporer from 160 to 180 AD. Marcus was one of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors, where there was relative peace and stability for the Roman Empire. He was a very wise man. He is a great person to study if you want to see what a good leader could look like. Marcus Aurelius said, “It is the responsibility of the leadership to work intelligently with what is given and not waste time fantasizing about a world of flawless people and perfect choices.” This quote is so powerful.
We often waste time waiting for the perfect situation to arise before we take action. It is probably one of the biggest reasons we get less done than we would like. You wake up in the morning with a great plan ahead, and then life happens, things go wrong, schedules do not work as planned, and people let you down. As leaders, we must rise above those situations and not let them get to us. We are the ones people look up to when everything goes wrong. We are the ones who have to set the example. We must go forward when everyone else is standing still, making excuses, and not doing anything. Throughout history, we find organizations, companies, and families do great things because someone rose, decided to be the leader, led with intelligence, and did not waste time fantasizing about a world with flawless people and perfect circumstances. If you want to be a great leader, you cannot let present circumstances control your actions. All of your current actions need to consider your future goals. You will have to train your way of thinking so that every step you take aligns with what you are trying to accomplish and what kind of leader you want to be.
At this point, you have either acknowledged that you are a leader and want to improve your abilities to be better or you have determined that being a leader is not for you. If you decide to take on the challenge of becoming a leader or better your leadership skills, I would like to share with you three tools that can h
YOUR THOUGHTS START EVERYTHING
There is a television show called Modern Marvels on the History Channel that I like to watch from time to time. On the show, they cover how things are made. The topics cover everything from how sugar is made to how the Panama Canal was built. I’ve always found it fascinating to learn how things are made and, more importantly, the process it takes to build or make the products, materials, or structures. The ingenuity of the people who create these things is something to applaud, and the process by which these large-scale machines are made is mesmerizing.
Have you ever looked at a tall building or structure and wondered, “how did they make that?”. I ask myself that all the time. I recently became curious about how vehicles use the braking system in your car to make electrical energy stored in electric vehicles' batteries and used when accelerating. It is called regenerative braking. Regenerative braking uses an electric vehicle’s motor as a generator to convert much of the kinetic energy lost when decelerating back into stored energy in the vehicle’s battery. It can be commonly found in hybrid Toyota vehicles and many other uses. I know you're probably saying to yourself, “John, I don’t care about Modern Marvels or how things are made. Get to the point.” So, I will. I am talking about how these things were made because everything that was not originally part of the earth was first created in someone’s mind. Thinks about that for a second.
Before there were large buildings, cars, or electronics, we all had raw materials and our thoughts. Everything, and I mean everything, that has been created, started with an idea. The electronic device you are using to read or listen to this right now was built in the mind of someone before it was made. And very similar to how things are made, we can develop how our future is made. There are extreme similarities between how one creates a rocket or building and how one creates your future. Let me explain.
To build anything, someone has first to conceive it in thought, then that thought is written down, and a rough plan on how it can be made or built is documented. The plan that is put initially together will probably be changed several times because the person who conceived the idea may only know all the materials and resources available to him once he does his research. Once the process is documented, a plan is put together for building or creating something, a timeline is applied, and the work begins. This is no different than how you build the life you want. But it would be best if you had a clear idea of what you want in life to get it. I won’t spend much time teaching you how to figure out what you want in life, but if you are having difficulty with it, please check out my resources on the Relentless People website or some of the podcasts that cover that subject specifically. Once we know what we want, then we must put a plan together.
I would like to give you a few tips to help your chances of success when putting a plan together,
Don’t Get Distracted
During the planning stages, it is essential to follow a few rules to guarantee success. Remember that everything starts with a thought, but to make that thought a reality, you must be highly focused during the planning phase. Everyone has an idea, or 20, and they are all amazing, according to that person. However, making that idea come to fruition is where the difficulty lies.
You will find opposition coming from every direction when you start to put pen to paper. It will take everything you have not to want to quit at this stage. You begin to question if all the effort is worth it. You’ll wonder if it is even worth putting a plan together vs. just trying it wit

CREATING A GOAL
One of the building blocks to becoming successful and living a relentless life is being able to set goals and see them through. If you do not know how to set goals or how to see them through, you will not be successful. But before we talk about how to set goals, we must first talk about what makes up a goal, what it is, and what it is not.
What Is a Goal
So, what is a goal? A goal is the object of a person's ambition or effort, an aim or desired result. If you have ambition, which I believe most of you do and want to get the desired result in your life, then you can set a goal. The difficulty comes with the effort portion of the definition. You much put effort behind your goal for it to have a chance of coming through.
There are a few other things you much possess to set a goal. You must be able to visualize what you want. If you are a person that must see everything before making a decision, setting a goal may not come naturally to you. Have you ever met someone who has to see every option possible before making a decision? Or maybe you know of someone who, when asked what color they would like on a wall or where they would like a piece of furniture placed in a living room, must see several colors on the wall or have the furniture physically placed in several places before being able to make a decision. People who think this way may be able to set a goal in theory but will have a hard time visualizing what the plan is supposed to look like when it is accomplished.
Another ability you must possess is being able to prioritize. Not only must you be able to see what things look like when you reach your goal, but you also must be able to visually see every step that is needed to be accomplished along the way.
Lastly, you must realize that to accomplish a goal; you will have to say no a lot. Some people have a hard time saying no. They say yes, even when they know, they will not be able to fulfill what they agreed to, just to stress out about their decision and continually ponder how they can get out of their commitments. Accomplishing goals can be challenging and may take much time. It is common for people to underestimate how long it takes to get things done. You see this with people with little to no experience setting goals and seeing them through. If you have never set a goal and seen it through, it is tough to understand the challenges that come your way. We naturally think that just because others have done it, we can do it with the same vigor, speed, and ease.
I liken setting and accomplishing goals to riding a bike. If you have never ridden a bike, it is easy to see others do it and think, “I can do that.” But once you get on a bike for the first time, you find it is not so easy. You may first need to start with the training wheel, then have someone hold your bike from behind while you peddle and become familiar with how to get your balance, and then after some time, you start to know how to ride your bike on your own. This does not mean you can not jump ramps and do tricks, but you are now familiar with how to ri

HOW TO GET WHAT YOU NEED
Have you ever seen someone do something great and wondered, “how did they do that”? Or maybe you have someone you admire and have always wanted to know how they achieved success in their field. When I was younger, I was always in awe of U.S. Marines and business professionals. I vividly remember being in the car's back seat with my parents and driving by a billboard with a poster of what looked like a night in shining armor. I asked my parents what that was on the billboard. They told me it was a U.S. Marine. They explained to me how to become a Marine. I immediately became obsessed. I read books and watched movies that had Marines in them. And the more research I did, the more I wanted to be one. But to me, being a U.S. Marine looked so hard. I would first have to get good grades so that I could be prepared for my ASVAB test ( ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), then graduate from high school, which no one in my family had done, and finally make sure I stayed in shape so that I could pass the introductory PFT (Personal Fitness Test). That was to get me in the door of Bootcamp. The things I would have to do to graduate from boot camp took a whole other set of physical and mental skills. I had doubts if I could do it, but I kept remembering how that 12-year-old boy felt in the back of the car when he first saw that post of a U.S. Marine in his Dress Blues with a sword in his hand. At the time, I did not realize the magnitude of the impact becoming a U.S. Marine would play on my life; all I knew was that I had to become one. The lessons learned and discipline developed was priceless, and I still apply the mental practices and strengths I learned while in Bootcamp and serving in the Fleet Marine Force.
So what does my experience have to do with you overcoming the odds? Here is an example of what it looks like to overcome the odds when life looks like it is trying to hold you back from becoming what you want. I want to let you know that you are not alone if you feel like the deck is stacked against you and you can’t see a way out, but somewhere inside you, you see something more significant than what you are right now. I want you to know that you can accomplish what is in your heart, no matter your age, stage in life, or challenges that come your way. As much as your struggles may seem unique, I need you to know that your situation is not unusual, some people came before you who had more immense struggles, and those same people accomplished great things.
Now that I have told you how I feel, based on my own experiences, I would like to give you some tools to overcome the odds and be better than average or better than you think you can be. I never want to motivate you and make you feel suitable for a minute without practical lessons to apply in your life to get the results you need.
People Don’t Care
First, I want you to know that people don’t care if you accomplish what you want. This isn’t preschool where you ask for something you enjoy, like candy or get a reward for existing, and the te

WHAT IS SUCCESS
The Relentless People Podcast is about providing Motivation, Inspiration, and Life Changing Lessons on how to become Successful through Relentless behavior and habits. So, a large part of this podcast is about success. I figured we would spend some time defining what is successful. But first, I would like to spend a little time letting you know what it is not.
Wealth
It's easy to confuse wealth with success. Most of the time, if you go to a party, one of the first things that you could be asked is what do you do for a living? The question behind this question is how prestigious your job is and how much you potentially make. Everything from what you wear, to what you drive, to what neighborhood you live in speaks to your financial situation. And some people will immediately judge how successful or not based on how many material things you have accumulated by your wealth. I can tell firsthand from being a financial advisor that just because people have nice things does not mean they have financial wealth. Some of the people who have what we may think as prestigious jobs are some of the most broke people I have known. It was common for me to meet attorneys who drove Mercedes and BMWs, lived in a gated community, and went to the fanciest of parties just to go home and be frustrated that they couldn't pay their bills and keep up with the Joneses.
But let's say you were a good manager of money. Let's say you did accumulate true wealth. I'm not talking about having enough money to pay your bills or even being a rich millionaire. I'm talking about the wealthiest of people. I'm talking about deca-millionaires and billionaires. Even most of them will tell you that wealth does not define success. Richard Branson, who is worth an estimated $5.1 billion, once said, "too many people measure how successful they are by how much money they make or people they associate with. In my opinion, true success should be membered measured by how happy you are." Even though I don't think you can narrow success down to a feeling like happiness, I believe Richard Branson was onto something. He is a sage man, and he shows it by very clearly stating that it is foolish to measure someone's success by how much money they make or with whom they associate.
Some of you may be saying, "John, you don't understand the situation that I'm in. If I were wealthy, all my problems would disappear, and I would be very successful." I know some of you may be saying this and genuinely believing it, take it from someone who has accumulated some riches and can speak firsthand that it is nice to have money, but I can honestly say that it doesn't mean I'm successful. There were too many factors that played into my accumulating my riches. Too many people helped me along the way, situations and opportunities that came across my path, and a little bit of sheer luck. Although I firmly believe that the party you work, the luckier you get. At best, I would say financial wealth is a great goal to accomplish. If it is something that you've always desired to have, go for it. Financial freedom does allow you choices and does provide you with

THIS IS YOUR BIGGEST ENEMY
What is your biggest enemy? What can delay your progress, stunt your professional growth, and even stop you from becoming the person you want?
This enemy kept DeVinci from finishing paintings and even tried to delay Victor Hugo's masterpieces. This enemy has stopped many famous people from fulfilling what they initially set out to do and will stop you if you let it.
Have you ever heard of Frank Lloyd Wright? I'm sure you have.
According to his apprentice, Edgar Tafel, Wright had nine months to design a house on a waterfall. And for nine whole months, Wright did nothing. It was not until the owner of the house told Wright he would arrive that day to pay for and pick up the plans that Wright started and completed the projects in two hours. Talk about waiting until the last minute.
Let's look at another example of how this enemy called procrastination works. According to historians, Leonardo DaVinci spent over a decade painting the Mona Lisa, not because it was an intricate, complex painting, but because Davinci was such a perfectionist. Have you ever delayed doing something because you felt it had to be perfect before you released it or put it into action? This is just another form of procrastination. At some point, you've got to let it go and let it fly. When given the Virgin of the Rocks project, Davinci took 25 years. Please do not take that long to do what you want to do in life. How about his piece called Adoration of the Magi? Have you heard of that one? If you haven't, it's probably because he never finished it. It had to be handed off to another painter. Guess what he was doing when he was supposed to be painting? He was doodling inventions hundreds of years ahead of his time. Have you ever seen those drawings of a futuristic helicopter, scuba diving gear, or parasailing equipment? That was what DaVinci was drawing during this time. Undoubtedly, those drawings contributed to our society. But this is an excellent example of getting sidetracked from what you're supposed to do. I'm a huge fan of Leonardo Da Vinci, and it makes me feel a little bit better when I procrastinate, but it doesn't justify it.
Did you know that Victor Hugo would ask his servant to take away all his clothes and only return them once he'd finished his work; this prevented him from going outside before he finished writing. He knew that if there were a way to procrastinate, he would. Kudos to Victor for being so dedicated.
All of these examples show that procrastination can affect anyone and does affect everyone. It's just a matter of how much.
Many things can play into how much procrastination affects your life. One of the most significant factors is how you were raised and what challenges you have had to overcome in life. Another factor may be how you've dealt with procrastination in the past. Most of our life has to do with habits. If you're used to procrastinating, have seen people procrastinating in the past, and have accepted it as a way of life, procrastination may come a little bit easier for you. However, suppose you were raised in an environment where procrastination wasn't always acceptable or was taught to do things now instead of tomorrow. Maybe you build healthy habits around not procrastinating. In that case, you may be better than most. In all cases, no matter how you are raised, what environment you live&

WHAT IS THE RELENTLESS PEOPLE PODCAST?
If this is your first time visiting relentless people, let me thank you for allowing me to be a part of your success journey. I have to tell you that I had to record a few podcasts before I knew what the Relentless People podcast would be. I know that sounds odd because I'm the one who created it. I had a general idea of what I wanted to do. When I started this podcast, I wanted to share some life lessons that I learned.
Let me start by telling you just a little bit about me. Amazing parents raised me with not much money but much love. After graduating high school, I joined the Marine Corps. And had the opportunity to travel a lot. After the US Marine Corps., I got a few degrees, including an MBA with an emphasis on finance. Fast forward about 20 years, I owned five businesses and thought I would retire. After selling an insurance investment agency, I took about nine months off because I was exhausted from running companies. It did not take long for me to get bored and get what people would call a real job.
I entered the banking industry as a vice president in the business banking arena. My job was to bring on new business customers and help them with all their banking needs, including lending up to 20 million. I was good at math so figuring out the cost of funds, debt service ratios, and other formulas that went with this job came easy. In the back of my head, I knew working in corporate America for an extended period was not for me. Because it was not fair to the companies that paid me to do a job, for me to do it in a 1/2 mannered way, I handed in my notice and resignation. I again decided to take some time off and figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up. Coming from modest beginnings, I had accomplished everything I had set out to, only to find out I could have accomplished so much if I had believed in myself. But to be fair, growing up, I didn’t have many examples of what success could look like or where to begin. I was the only one in my family who graduated high school and still the only one who went on to get a college degree. Fortunately, I had a dad who taught me that anything was possible and great teachers and mentors that helped me along the way.
I consider myself blessed and fortunate to be where I am. I'm financially successful, have a great family that supports me, and have gained some wisdom through repeated mistakes and nuggets of knowledge that others have shared with me.
After about two years of self-reflection and helping people others here and there with their businesses, I realized that I had to gain valuable information that might be able to help people.
It's not that I am so arrogant to think that I know more than anyone, I've just been able to apply principles repeatedly, and I've gotten the results that others expressed they wanted. And it would be best if you didn't think everything was great throughout my life. Although this podcast is not about a pity party, I will share some of my struggles in life so that you can understand that life is hard. Everybody goes through struggles, and for us to live relentlessly, we must make the right decisions when challenges come our way.
So back to why this podcast exists. This podcast is about helping you achieve success. The principles you will learn apply to financial success and success in all parts of your life. If you feel as if you're inadequate, there is a part of your life that needs to be improved, or there's some specific goal that you want to reach, this podcast can help. For the most part, I'll be speaking with you directly, but if I find value in bringing other people on for interviews, you may hear them sprinkled throughout. If you are listening to this podcast, reading something from R
