Paul concludes the "bad news" section of Romans by answering some final objections from those who are concerned that God cannot judge the Jewish people who He has promised to protect. As a result all people are guilty and have no excuse before God.

Paul now turns his attention to judgmental, self-righteous religious people who judge others. The same logic that the self righteous person uses to attack others also applies to him! Both Jew and Gentile then will be held accountable for their sin.

Paul's first step in describing the Gospel is explaining how even gentiles who have never heard of the Mosaic law are still accountable for their sins. He gives three examples of sins that are self-evidently true. When gentiles exchange these self-evident truths for lies, they are left without any excuse for doing so. Unbeknownst to an imaginary self-righteous opponent, Paul is preparing to turn this logic on religious Jews who were caught up in agreeing whole heartedly in condemning gentiles, a condemnation that will apply to them as well.
