Our team have been fortunate enough to sit down with Dr David Shiers, an honourary research consultant for the psychosis research unit and retired GP, and Angela Halfpenny, manager and oral health lead at The Larkins care home, to talk about severe mental illness and oral health.
David is a carer for his daughter Mary who has schizophrenia and a learning disability, and talks openly about the poor experiences he saw his daughter go through in previous care homes where her oral health was not a priority and how that contrasts with her new home at The Larkins.
Angela has made it her goal to ensure oral health is prioritised in the care home she manages after seeing how it can impact the residents' well-being. The Larkins was even used as an example in the CQC report Smiling Matters.
She calls oral health management a privilege, and a great way to start and end the day. We couldn't agree more.
