The Frankencast is a podcast about Frankenstein, and so much more. Join Anthony Bowman and Eric Velazquez every week as they discuss one Frankenstein movie, recapping the plot, analyzing the cultural relevance, and obsessing over Spinning Science Wheels and Flappy Bats. And just generally having a lot of fun along the way.
Hello fiends! Hayden Orr is back again, and this time we're talking about a bizarro sexploitation mashup with a checkered past. It's not exactly sexy, but it's definitely fun. Join us as we talk about monster faces that are totally not masks, monster guitarists, and a mad scientist who simply cannot be sneaky.

Well fiends, we are once again headed to the land of Japan, so we are once again joined by our ringer for all things Japanese, Alex Heichelbech. This time we're watching a campy high school comedy with so many controversial things to discuss. Plus a Kabuki Mad Scientist Vice Principal, a magic cape, and living screws?

Fiends, once again Hayden Orr has joined the gang as we ride around a small Georgia town, blowing up cop cars, angering local Sasquatches, and engaging in so many questionable practices that we can't even begin to get into it. We're talking about a Frankenstein biker movie that is the sequel to a non-Frankenstein biker movie that we did not watch. Things are going great, team.

It's a weird week, fiends. Your friendly neighborhood Mad Scientist is flying solo this week to tell you all about this slight, low budget movie that succeeds in some ways and fails in others. Join me as I talk to myself for an hour. And don't worry, Eric will be back. And in the meantime, I'm bringing in a few ringer guest hosts to help out. But this is a lonely movie set in the isolated tundra, so maybe it works?

Join us as we discuss EMPs, the movie's real-world analogs, and the killer murphy bed we didn't know we needed. Listen along to find out what we thought. Is this film unfairly maligned? Continuing our Elvis coverage(?), this week we're talking about this incredibly late-90s horror comedy. It's an incredibly frustrating film in that it has some really interesting ideas that are executed so poorly that it's almost indefensible. But join us as we discuss internalized homophobia, some of the worst gay stereotypes of the 90s, obscure rock 'n' roll trivia, and more!

This episode comes in a little glass vial! (A little glass vial?) Wanna get in on this modern cult film before it fully cements its cult classic status? Now's your chance! Join us as Pauly from Goodfellas faces off against Giles from Buffy in a battle to the death over a (maybe?) terminally ill teen girl. There's gross face masks, there's Paris Hilton/Bill Moseley sibling rivalry (and sibling other things), there's a grave robbing Greek chorus, there's Chekhov's wrought-iron fence, there's machine-gun-toting Business Babes, there's DJ Meemaw on the ones and twos. We did it, fiends! 200 episodes! They said it couldn't be done, and here we are. This week, to celebrate the special occasion, we're finally watching two movies we've been wanting to get to since day one. We're discussing the alternating dual-role performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller in the British National Theatre's production of Frankenstein. Okay, so we weren't quite done with Dr. Moreau. This week we're joined by Very Special Guest Rodney Ascher, director of Room 237, The Nightmare, A Glitch in the Matrix, and Ghost Boy (which is currently doing the festival circuit). We've reached the final Moreau film (for now, but just wait for our brilliant sequel PLANET OF DR. MOREAU), and we gotta say that this much maligned 1996 film with the extremely well-documented disastrous production actually kind of rules? So, like, see it if you haven't. It's absolutely bonkers, but in the best kind of way. Join us as we discuss the Brando vs. Kilmer war of craziness, the world's smallest man, and the world's most unwelcome extra.

We've finally gotten to an Island of Dr. Moreau actually CALLED the Island of Dr. Moreau. This week we have Austin Powers' boss washing up on the shore of an island run by Elmer Gantry. We've got to go back to the island, fiends! We had so much fun at the Blood Island (of Dr. Moreau) that we're returning for another visit. This week, it's the Island of Lost Souls. And even though it doesn't mention Moreau in the title, this one is much more explicit in its adaptation than Terror is a man. Join us as Charles Laughton chews the scenery as Moreau, and we meet an exceedingly furry Bela Lugosi reciting the law, and the Panther Woman, an addition to the story who we'll be seeing again.

This week, we're getting TOTALLY 90s , as we watch this MTV freak-out from so many of the people behind the Bill and Ted films. It's a weird, wild film that at first poses as an equal-opportunity offender, but is actually kind of stealthy in it's progressiveness? This week's film is a surprise release from Full Moon Features that we could not resist talking about. It's a "lost" film starring Tony Todd that Charles Band has "graciously" dug up and finished in the wake of the actor's recent passing. Join us as we meet Jack and Jill, who metaphorically fetch (perform horrific surgery on) a pail of water (two cats). Join us as we talk about turning the camera on the male gaze, the many mirrors of Frankenstein, and the most unpleasant shrimp cocktail of all time.

This week, we're getting a little serious with this arthouse drama made during the tail-end of Franco-fascist rule in Spain. It's a bittersweet, slice-of-life drama about a family on the verge of falling apart in a small village on the Castilian Plains. Oh, and it's got a Frankenstein, baby! Join us for one of our most thoughtful discussions yet.

Surprise, we're back! And, surprise, this movie is good actually? Somehow this Wild Eye Releasing film about a little person Frankenstein is not at all insensitive and is actually a nostalgic twist on ET, but possibly even better? Gasp! Join us as we gush about Andre Gower, get really mad about jerk boyfriends, and get choked up at a little Frankenstein eating trick or treat candy. It's all very sweet.

Happy Hanukkah, fiends! This week we're discussing an early silent adaptation of the Jewish folktale of the Golem of Prague. Happy holidays, fiends! All is calm, all is bright. This week, we're discussing the 5th film in this truly bonkers slasher Santa series, but this one is about the Pinocchio we have at home. But also murder. Join us as we get our skulls hollowed out by a toy worm, get put in traction by evil rocket skates, and bang in a car at work for some reason.

You know that incomprehensibly dry British humor you always hear people talking about? Well, we found some. Join us for a Frankenstein comedy from the 80s that kinda feels like it could be from the 70s. We have Donald Pleasence as a pervy Frankenstein, a feminist racecar driver/political protestor, a bunch of nameless bureaucrats in an incredibly out-of-print movie that is thankfully available on YouTube. It's... fun? I think it's fun.

Do you have your tissues ready? Okay, this might be barely a Frankenstein story. But hear us out. It's a light-hearted little comedy and it works as a really bizarre double feature with last week's film. So join us for wacky hijinks as a real girl pretends to be a robot, and a robot pretends to be a real girl. Join us as we struggle with voice commands, sneak food when the management isn't looking, and try desperately to make a watch that can yodel.

2024 has given us so many interesting new takes on the Frankenstein story, and this is another great example, only instead of making a monster out of corpse parts, an unsuspecting dad just buys a really hot robot and things go awry. Things are getting chaotic over here at the Frankencast Labs! Join us as we watch two low-budget movies and have very different feelings about the two. First up, it's Amityville Frankentein, one more film in the increasingly broken series of completely unrelated "Amityville" films. This one is certainly not in anyway related to the Amityville Horror, nor is it really all that much of a Frankenstein film, but here we are, we watched it, and now we have to talk about it. We're talking time loops, toothpaste arguments, and FMV video games... And THEN, we move on to Las Vegas Frankenstein, a movie about a creepy hypnotist, a cursed artifact once owned by Mary Shelley, and that jewel of the desert, Las Vegas! Join us as we talk about cool Frankenstein puppets, that feeling when you know a lady in a movie is totally gonna get naked, and some of the most cameo cameos you've ever seen!

It's been awhile since we've shared what we've been getting up to over on Patreon here on the main feed, so we thought we'd share a full episode with y'all this week. And this week, Eric surprised Anthony with so much Warhammer lore to celebrate the new release of Space Marine 2! Join us as we discuss this nearly 40 year-old tabletop miniature war game, complete with the dozens of times various people throughout the Warhammer multiverse got up to some Frankensteiny business.
IT'S SHOWTIME! As soon as we saw something even slightly Frankensteiny in the new Beetlejuice, we knew we couldn't resist the chance to talk about it here. So join us for our discussion that starts generally and then gets very spoilery. We'll warn you before we do though. Get ready for a surprising number of animal attacks, SO many weddings, and an inevitable puppeteered dance number. Would it even be Beetlejuice without it?

This week, we're discussing another new release, but one you may not have heard of. We've got a decent example of a direct-to-streaming legacy sequel, this is decent but not great, and that seems to have mostly been overlooked. But it's definitely worth your time. This week, your favorite Horror Hosts are traveling to outer space with the MCU's wackiest bunch of galactic misfits. Sure, there are other movies in the series, but are they Frankenstein stories? Not so much. This one, which tells the story of Rocket Raccoon, however, is a different story. Join us for this heartbreaking, sad and sweet film, where we discuss good dogs, divorce, and our old friend Lloyd Kaufman. Also Anthony got Nebula and Gamora mixed up like a thousand times (most of the mistakes got edited out, but see if you can figure out where they were!)

It's episode 150, so it's time we finally talked about the movie called Frankenstein! No, not that one. No, not that one either... Okay, so there are a lot of movies called Frankenstein, but this week, we're talking about the lesser-known BBC TV movie set in modern (2007-modern) times. Join us as we look at this still quite relevant, melancholy reinterpretation complete with gender-swapped mad scientist, evil unhoused guys, evil government agents, and a fairly gross tank full of genetic goo.

I don't know why it's taken us so long to get to this one. This play is basically the ur-text of Frankenstein adaptations, coming out so early that it predates Mary Shelley's famed 1831 rerelease of the Frankenstein novel. In fact, we know from her letters and journals that Mary actually attended a performance of the play, and approved. Join us as we look at this economic adaptation that manages to incorporate more sub-plots and secondary characters than the average Frankenstein adaptation!
If this week's movie isn't a Frankenstein story, it is at the very least a Frankenstein Monster of a story, mashing Faust, Picture of Dorian Gray, Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, and (yes, even) Frankenstein together into something that's also kind of the Rocky Horror Picture Show? It's the best kind of crazy mess. Join us at the Paradise where you definitely (probably) won't get attacked by a vengeful Phantom in a spooky bird mask.

I recently recovered an old box of childhood books from my mom's garage. It was mostly Goosebumps books, but I did also find two different abridged for children versions of Frankenstein. This week, sit back and relax as I read you a bedtime story. This is the Random House Bullseye Chillers version of Frankenstein, adapted by Larry Weinberg.
He created a monster... of death!
It's the most 1980s movie ever to be set in the 1800s! Join us as the "Every Breath You Take" guy makes monsters out of the Kurgan and the Flashdance girl. We're getting ever nearer the end of season one of The Munsters Today and this week, we've got two absolute banger episodes. Roger and DeeDee Nelson really establish themselves as series regulars in "Neighborly Munsters" and we are absolutely froked about it. Also, we meet this series' version of Uncle Gil and he's just some weirdo painted green? And it's kinda great?
Do you hear that sound? Like glass cracking? I'm sure it's nothing. Join us as we celebrate the month of May with some untreated mental illness, a Central Casting 80s punk, and a dog that definitely (probably) had all four legs last time we checked.

So, I accidentally stumbled upon this delightful abridged interpretation of Frankenstein performed with paper bag puppets and was surprised to discover it was created here in the Frankencast's hometown of Louisville, KY by the Louisville Free Public Library. So of course we had to share this with you all.
Check out the video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1E-0mx1Yp4 and show our local library some love!
Here at the Frankencast, we've spent a lot of time talking about the Mother of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, but we haven't really talked much about the Father of Frankenstein, James Whale. It's high-time we remedied that, so here we are talking about the Academy Award winning fictional retelling of the last days of Whale's life. Join us as we talk about some heavy topics and pay tribute to the man who is at least partially responsible for the nearly endless supply of Frankenstein films that allows us to do this show.

As we near the end of season one of the Munsters Today, the timeline is getting very confusing. We had some good character development going, and now this week we have all kinds of returning characters acting like they've never met before. Maybe it's Grandpa's fault somehow?
Join us for "Two Left Feet" and "Lights Camera Munsters".
The Frankencast finally meets exploitation legend Roger Corman! And things get... unbound? Join us as we use up an entire talking car printer cartridge, make the worst time traveler choices ever, and use the most futuristic technology imaginable: The Clapper™️ (As Seen on TV).

We did an April Fools a few weeks ago, and we kinda wanted to take the bandages off and talk about the process. Why we did it, what we learned, and will we do it again? Find out all that and more in this post-mortem chat.
This week we're doing a somewhat overlooked late 80s action/revenge flick, and things get surprisingly deep. Join us as we sound 1,000 years old while talking about courtroom sketch artists and beepers and other rad classics of the 1980s. But there's a lot of really cool gory deaths?

Doctor Who? We just watched Ken Russell's Gothic, so we thought it seemed appropriate to take a look at the time that The Doctor met Mary Shelley, and it was kind of underwhelming. Join us as we somehow never see the TARDIS, completely ignore Mary Shelley to focus on Percy, and then kind of not really pay much attention to Percy either.
It's time to Take Care of Business with the King! Join us as we take a trip to a little nursing home in scenic Mud Creek, TX. Pick your favorite historical figure, fact or fiction, dress the part, and join us in the dining hall for some appropriately soft dinner, say around 4:00pm? We'll bring the stolen dessert, you bring the Battle Bed Pan.
Oh, and happy... early April?
Your Horror Hosts: Anthony Bowman (he/him) & Eric Velazquez (he/him).
Sorry for making things weird. Join us this week as we see what Ken Russell imagines it was like at Villa Diodati as Mary Shelley was inspired to write Frankenstein. Turns out it's mostly like a bad drug trip with some horny moments in there to keep things interesting. Join us as we dance with a robot stripper, talk to our leeches, and finally get to see a depiction of Percy Shelley's famous scary vision. (Hot.)

Well, they can't all be winners. This week we join the Munsters as they're forced to open a bed and breakfast and (of course) do a pretty terrible job. We also learn what happens when Lily gets the flu, which is apparently that the entire family completely falls apart? Be prepared for Munsters actung very un-Munster-like. Better luck next time?
Oh, hey, we found some footage. Wanna take a look at this footage that we found? Join us as we go on a hunt for the Blair Wi... uh, Frankenstein. It's basically a whole, uh, "project". Along the way, we'll meet a guy who is totally NOT Chekhov's Pedestrian, a guy who was just kickin' it with Frankenstein (and definitely NOT doing any meth), and a creepy doll in the world's least chill yurt.

Oh, and then Grandpa finds a girlfriend on the 1980s version of Tinder. Just Munsters doin' Munster stuff. Outrageous!
Hey fiends, this week we're taking a break from our endless monster movie marathon so we can take some time to get a little more Literary. We've been visiting a lot of classic Saturday morning cartoons lately, and here's one that is maybe a little less well-known, but is absolutely seared into the brains of your Horror Hosts. We're talking about a few segments from the classic Mario animated series. Long before Chris Pratt and Jack Black faced off as dueling video game characters, there was Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells dancing around in their rundown Brooklyn apartment. Join us as we Do The Mario, altogether!

This week, it's time for more Munsters Today, and we're still kinda surprised that this show continues to be pretty good. Oh, and there's character development? And continuity? In an 80s laugh-track sitcom? This week Grandpa accidentally becomes a teacher and Herman accidentally becomes a medical oddity. Just another day with The Munsters!
It's time to catch up with Scooby and the gang. They've been doing their thing since the 60s and they're still at it, now with cellphones and social media and all of your favorite modern conveniences. We came (to Terra Arcana), we saw (a bunch of pointless nonsense), we conquered (our desire to put down this series and walk away). Join us as we meet some goofy gnomes, and uhhhh... Something else? Surely something else happened in there. Well, at least it was fun to talk about.

This week: Is... is The Munsters Today good actually? After the last two really solid episodes, this week we have two more bangers. And this time they even kinda feel like classic Munsters plots, first with a silly cameo in "Herman the Astronaut" (real-life astronaut Gordon Cooper. You know, Gordon Cooper, the astronaut we all know and love?) and then with a visit from a groovy rock band in "Rock Fever". Oh, also the Munsters do a rap. Don't you want to hear the Munsters do a rap?
Happy Valentines Day, fiends! Are you ready to get... confusedly horny? Join us for this very weird late-era Franco film. We'll be hanging out with the incomprehensible Ghost Dad of Frankenstein, a beautiful nasty puppet, and the illusive Always-Nude. We apologize in advance.

Inspired by Philip J. Reed's book The Wolf Man, from DieDie Books, we had to check out this strange curiosity from the days of live television "playhouse"-style programs. This live adaptation of Frankenstein starring Lon Chaney Jr. near the end of his life has a bit of a reputation among genre fans. Join us as we discuss this short film, it's reputation, and hopefully adequately honor a man who suffered a lot and still managed to give us monster kids so many brilliant performances.
Epic Music Kicks In Every man has a right to defend their life. But is a Frankenstein monster a man? I don't know. We're awfully busy at the Frankencast Lab, so enjoy this, our very first Patreon episode!
If you're doing a podcast where you just talk about Frankenstein and Frankenstein-adjacent movies all the time, it's important to figure out what exactly counts as a Frankenstein movie.
In this spiritual sequel to "Why Frankenstein?", one of our most popular early episodes, join us as we talk about what's Frankenstein and what isn't. We go to some weird places and talk ourselves into adding some movies to our list that we're less than excited about.
We also laugh more than any other episode we've ever recorded. It's a good time.
Let us know in the comments if you agree or disagree with any of our thoughts. And tell us if you have any suggestions of other movies that should count as Frankenstein films. The more we have, the longer we can keep doing this!

After a nice holiday break, we're back at the hard work of reading some edgy late 90s comics. This week we're reading issues 3, 4, and 5 of the 8-part mini-series. And unfortunately it hasn't gotten much better. Join us as we buy some good ol' fashioned American guns for our multiversal conquest, have trouble displaying our Medusa-ness (but not our hotness), and meet The Devil, from The Bible.
Well, we took a detour for several weeks, but it's finally time to Carry On Screaming! Join us as we talk to our dead boss, regenerate from a single finger like some kind of starfish, and keep trying to make "Frying tonight" happen.

Join us this week as Herman goes back to school in "Magna Cum Munsters" and Lily tries to get a job in "Designing Munsters". It's finally here, fiends! It's the bizarre and buzzy Frankenstein movie that we've been waiting for all year. And it turns out, whether you've read the book or not, it totally lives up to the hype. We had so much fun with the original run of DC's Creature Commandos that we thought we'd check out the reboot from the year 2000. Spoiler alert: we're having a lot less fun with this version. But all our old favs are back, especially "Lucky" Taylor, aka Patchwork, the edgy late-90s hero name that our perpetually sad hero needed.
Happy Holidays, fiends! We know we promised a different movie this week, but the holidays are all about changing plans, especially when there are gifts involved. And we sure do have a gift for y'all this week! Join us for this delightful Christmas with America's Favorite Family, we'll be singing Christmas carols while running, reading Chekhov's letter to Santa, ruining Christmas for a biker domme, and absolutely, positively NOT eating the fruitcake.

This week, we've returned with more of The Munsters Today, and it feels like they're all still kinda getting the hang of things. We're a little better off that in the previous episodes, but they still haven't recaptured the magic of the original series. We're still holding out hope though. This week Grandpa makes a dumb decision, then doubles down on it some really stupid ways, and then Eddie goes mad with power. Join us, won't you?
Look out, fiends, it's our first Amicus Productions film, and this club has everything: the Holy Trinity of gothic horror, some off-brand Nazis, a super-spy with a Vulcan death grip, Chekhov's acid bath, and the very scary murderous Vampire Killer (who is also a Frankenstein): KEITH! This week, we finally did it folks! We've left the ancient year of 1966 and moved into the modern era of 1988. (Please do not remind us that 1988 is closer to 1966 than it is to today. We're not ready for that conversation.) Join us for "Still the Munsters After All These Years" and "Vampire Pie" as Grandpa accidentally Futuramas his whole family, Herman gets with the times by learning to cook (like some kind of woman or something), and Marilyn actually has a successful date (except for the part where Herman turns the boy's mom into a duck).
Hey fellow gamers! We're here with another of our classic Let's Plays, and this week we're playing the viral sensation, Five Nights at Freddy's! Join us as we go to this totally fun and family friendly pizza place! We're going to hang out in the ball pit, listen to some awesome 80s jams, and chill out with all our giant animal pals. Oh, and the guy from Scream is here? He's just watching us from the corner, ominously wiping a knife blade over and over? It's cool, it's totally cool. We're just gonna have a super chill time. This week we've returned with the thrilling conclusion of Full Moon's Resonator mini-series, and finally Herbert West gets his time in the spotlight. But don't worry, there's still plenty of Crawford and Wallace rivalry nonsense, our favorite sexy squid lady, and the least mysterious death of all time.
This year has been a great year for interpretations of Frankenstein, and early on we got this interesting Korean take on a Frankensteinian AI story. Join us as we deal with Korean Michael Scott, the office fanboy getting a pleasurebot of our mom, and a robot dog who is a Very Bad Boy.

We're headed back to our roots this week with a lesser-known original Universal Pictures film. The gang's all here! Lon Chaney Jr., Lionel Atwill, well, just those two actually. But still, it's nice to see old friends. Join us as we take pride in our mad scientist status, give new meaning to the term "electric fence", and discuss an unfamiliar novel: uh, checks notes Frankenstein? By Mary Shelley? Have you heard of this?

After the particularly strong showing of the last two episodes, The Munsters once again let us down with these two final episodes of season one. We've got a little racist stereotyping, some sexism from grandpa, and some serious stranger danger here in "Herman's Raise" and "Yes, Galen, there is a Herman Munster". Join us as we temporarily say goodbye to the 60s' favorite monster family!

This week, it's time to rebuild the Resonator, yet again, for one more ill-advised session with the Eldritch portal and all its slimy purple citizens. But also, Herbert West is here to revive a marsupial? Join us for more sexy squid lady, inexplicable character replacements, and some incredibly gratuitous stunt boobs!
It's back to school season, and this week we're going back to Monster High. And we're finding that things have gotten a little too real when it comes to witch/monster relations. Join us for racist catgirls, farting body doubles, and himbo hot dog confusion.

This week, the people have spoken! You all seem to enjoy when we chat about non-Frankenstein horror, and it's Halloween season, so it seemed like a good time. Plus, there's like a million good horror movies out right now. And Eric actually had time to watch some of them! We discuss a whole big list of the current horror slate, but tried to be low on spoilers for those of you who might not have seen them all. Enjoy!
Imagine, if you will, a world where the United States is bad...
This week we're taking you to this fanciful sci-fi world where there's lots of discrimination and the government is lying to its citizens. It's very fictional. Join us as we hold a dog hostage, then later play the most deadly game of fetch. Also, we'll be unsuccessfully searching for world peace in the refrigerator.

This week, season one of The Munsters is nearing its conclusion and our favorite morbid writer is working hard to get in as many twisted jokes as he can before we have to say goodbye! Join us for possibly our two favorite episodes of the season: "Herman's Happy Valley" and "Hot Rod Herman." It's got everything, ghost towns, ghosts, fake ghosts, scam artists, gambling, race cars, Rob Zombie, and everyone's favorite punk-rock leather daddy, Herman Munster!
This week we're excited to discuss this new film that we've been eagerly waiting to get our eyes on. Join us as we get up to some truly weird science in the bar bathroom, sing along to the Rescue Birds theme song, and do something as unethical as eat a ham sandwich.

Real ones know that we love to dip our toes into the Frankenstein adjacent world of Re-Animator from time to time. And it's been awhile, so we've decided to check out this miniseries from Full Moon Entertainment that mashes up Re-Animator and From Beyond to create the Stuart Gordon Extended Cinematic Universe. This week we're talking about the first two episodes. Join us as we get our heads crushed, meet sexy squid ladies, and get blackmailed by our secret cultist college professor.
We've been having a lot of fun here, folks, but seriously, as the World's Pre-Eminent Frankenstein Podcast, every now and then, we need to watch a movie simply called Frankenstein. And this week, we're doing just that. This time around, it's the USA Network original film cobbled together from the pilot for a failed TV series based on an idea by novelist Dean Koontz. Join us as we hang out at funerals, get a little too referential with our names, and meet another autistic named Anthony, and only get a LITTLE mad about it.
As we mentioned in the episode, this is only one half of the conversation! Join us over on The Last Book on the Shelf podcast where Eric and I join them to discuss the Dean Koontz novel this film was based on: https://linktr.ee/lastbookontheshelf
Also, if you are so inclined, you can hear Anthony's collection of songs inspired by the Friday the 13th film franchise at constantreader.bandcamp.com

The Munsters has been pretty hit or miss lately, and this week it's a little bit of both. We're discussing the abysmal "Lily Munster - Girl Model" and the much better (but still not great) "Munster the Magnificent". Herman is kind of an idiot in both episodes, but much more charmingly so in the second of the two. There's also several surprise stray gay jokes in here? We're starting to feel some Munsters fatigue here at Castle Frankencast. At least we're getting close to the season finale. We're gonna change things up after that.
We're finishing up our Larry Fessenden double-feature with this film which is more explicitly Frankensteiny, but thankfully a little less depressing. But just a little. Join us as Frankenstein meets a stripper, says the movie title, and then does some cocaine about it.

As promised, we are back with the second half of the original DC Creature Commandos run from the early '80s. Join us as the crew starts to finally become an organized unit. We're asking the big questions like: "why are they always hanging out with blind kids?", "is a geisha robot really worth the money?", and "how many times does Lucky have to die before it finally sticks?".
As we say over and over on this show, a Frankenstein movie can be just about anything, if a creator sets their mind to it, and this week really shows that to be true. We're talking about a farmhouse family drama/anti-corporate science propaganda film, that also has a little bit of Frankenstein in it. Join us as we try to decide who the worst character is, try to unravel the marital politics of an intercom, and come up with the right name for a dog/calf hybrid.

We're back with more Munsters! As we get so close to the end of season one, we get nods to two other classic Universal Monsters, first with the surprise appearance of the literal Creature From the Black Lagoon (TM), aka Uncle Gilbert, and then with Herman being confused as a mummy, a nice nod to Boris Karloff, who originally played the Frankenstein Monster and the Mummy. We also get some rough Marilyn stuff, but we should really be used to that by now.
It's time for Frankenstein to get Reborn... again! Join us this week for Asylum Pictures' take on Frankenstein before they formed a symbiotic relationship with the Syfy Channel to create a never-ending series of CGI shark movies. Join us as we get really into nu-metal, completely misunderstand our job as a court mandated psychologist, and practice our best Anakin Skywalker NOOOOOO!

We haven't talked comics in a while, so this week we decided to dig into the original run of DC's Creature Commandos, part of the Weird War Tales anthology series. Here we have a Frankenstein, a Dracula, and a Werewolf fighting Nazis with the assistance of their absolutely horrible commanding officer. They're eventually joined by a Medusa, and occasionally by a Robot.
We're going through DC's omnibus collection of Creature Commandos stories, and this week we're talking about stories from Weird War Tales 93, 97, 100, 102, 104, 105, 107, 108, 109, 110, and 111. We'll finish the omnibus in a couple weeks!
We're back with another Full Moon Entertainment film! This time it's part of their short-lived kid-friendly Filmonsters series. Join us as ruin our girlish figures by reading, develop a training regiment for snoops, and pull off the rare Double Orphan Maneuver.

This week, as we get near the end of season 1, we get two episodes very focused on capitalism and sports? Join us for "Herman the Rookie" and "Country Club Munster". We meet real-life baseball guy Leo Durocher and instantly decide we hate him because he says a slur. We also learn the name of those awful golf pants. (They are knickerbockers!)
Oh, and if you want to see the episode of Sally Jesse Raphael that Eric mentions, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK3X12wTbwc

We're harvesting surprises this week! This movie kept us on our toes and we ended up having a lot to say about it. We're talking about scissor fetishes, stealing the opening scene from The Shining, and the ol' record player and piano trick. Join us, but not in THAT room. (You know the one.)

This week, we have a bit of a sequel to our discussion of neurodivergence a few weeks ago. This time, the Bride shares her thoughts and Anthony gets REAL personal. We think it's really important to keep talking about neurodivergence and mental health. On a grander scale, we obviously want to do our small part in normalizing neurodivergence to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. But on a smaller scale, it's also important for us to keep interrogating our own feelings and behaviors to continue to grow and improve as people. And in this case, we're happy to share this conversation with you all in the hopes that it might help some of you process some of your own feelings. And once again, as always, we're available here and on social media and email if you want to talk about anything!
We made it to 100 episodes, fiends! Thanks so much for your support, we couldn't have gotten here without you all. And to celebrate, we had to go back to the source: Mary Shelley.
Join us for this beautifully cinematic look at the life of the woman behind the monster. We'll also meet Mary's evil stepmother, discover that Lord Byron is just an early F-Boy, and suffer through my entire neighborhood all deciding to mow their yards at the same time. Happy 100 episodes to us!

And once again we're going back to our old friend Apex Magazine to discuss another short work. This week it's Betsy Phillips' zombie-farmhand mystery/romance with an evil Doctor who is just Frankensteinian enough to get our attention. It's a beautiful story that came to us as a recommendation from previous Frankencast discussion subject (and Apex Magazine published poet) Elizabeth McClellan.
Read Betsy's story here: https://apex-magazine.com/short-fiction/frank-2/
You can also read a short interview with Betsy about "Frank" here: https://apex-magazine.com/interviews-2/interview-with-betsy-phillips-author-of-frank/
We're continuing our Patrick Casey/Josh Miller double feature with this significantly more uneven film, part of National Lampoon's Dorm Daze series. Join us for a study abroad trip to Romania where we can definitely not take a vampire hunting class for credit, use vampire powers to resurrect the "What happens in Vegas" joke, and get booked for a reality show after displaying questionable amateur Frankenstein skills.

This week, we're back with more Munsters mishaps! We're talking "Munsters on the Move" and "Movie Star Munster" and it is kind of a mixed bag. We have the family being very supportive of Eddie's preference to not move away, but there's also some really heinous anti-Romani nonsense. We also have the classic Herman's hubris getting him into trouble plotline.
A few weeks ago, we met a teenage Frankenstein, and now, we meet his roommate! I think we should all just do what Matthew would have wanted, which in this case means: giving The Monster a bath, getting jumped into the Mormon gang, and arguing about Ramadan (you know, from the Godzilla movies).

We'll see some obvious borrowing from Scooby Doo, a cool Hammer Horror reference, and our first repeat villain. Oh, and a super racist episode that we kinda halfway skipped. Oops, Hanna-Barbera.
The world has forgotten Ryan Reynold's turn as a teen Frankenstein monster, but not your friends here at The Frankencast. We're here to get Justice For Boltneck (or whatever you wanna call it.) This week, we've decided to let The Munsters out of time out after two dismal episodes last time. And it looks like they're on their best behavior. We're discussing "Come Back, Little Googie" and "Far Out Munsters". One episode is a fun goof 'em up with Herman and Grandpa at their silliest, and the other is a literal love song to concepts of acceptance and understanding. Just Munsters being Munsters. Gotta love it.
This week your Horror Hosts are joined by Very Special Guest Sophia Lee to discuss this brand new interpretation of the Frankenstein story. Join us as we go deep on race relations in America, the cycle of poverty, and gang activity as a symptom of system injustice. We also talk about Contractually Obligated Creepy Kids, Racket Busters, and the best Frankenstein Easter Egg ever.

This week we're back with more Frankenstein Jr! Hopefully you all had fun with the last batch, because this bunch doesn't get any more clever or deep. Join us as literal child Buzz Conroy and his pet robot Frankenstein Jr. use an infinite array of hyper-specific gadgets to assist the American military in defeating an array of foes that we have never seen before, but who all clearly have extensive history with Buzz (again, an actual child) and FJ. Oh, and one episode this time is kinda racist!
Frankenstein is getting groovy, baby! Yeah! And we're going back to college. Join us we get expelled from school for the weakest duel of all time, get wasted on super-alcohol, and protest the idea of computers? This one's silly, folks.

Boy, this week is a rough one. We're back with two of the worst episodes of The Munsters we've watched so far. But it made for an interesting conversation. Be prepared to hear us discussing America's favorite monster family saying and doing some truly egregious stuff. Grandpa, Herman, and even Lily are all getting put in timeout after their behavior in "Follow That Munster" and "Love Locked Out." Marilyn and Eddie are looking better all the time.
We're back with the weird, meta, behind-the-scenes sequel to I Was A Teenage Frankenstein (and I Was A Teenage Werewolf). Join us as we explore the bizarre science of novocaine hypnotism, creepily talk to movie posters, and very abruptly burn up with our mask collections.

This week are you ready for some Saturday morning cartoons? Join us as we climb on our faithful giant robot companion, leave our dad behind and fly all the way back to the 1960s, when Hanna-Barbera ruled the airwaves! This week, we're discussing the first 6 Frankenstein Jr. shorts, including: the one with a slightly racist Asian stereotype, the one where we meet extra-terrestrial life and murder it, and the one with Spyder Man?
It's been a while, but we're finally back to a more traditional Frankenstein classic. This one is the main Frankenstein film to come out between the Universal and Hammer cycles, and it's also right in the midst of the teenager cultural explosion. We're so happy to welcome friend of the show Tim Kirk back! This time around, we discuss several of Tim's non-Frankenstein related projects, past, present, and future. Also, Tim comes prepared with some fun Frankenstein trivia and lore! This was an absolute joy, and Tim will definitely be back before long. In the meantime, for more of his work, visit tim2kirk.com. The Miami Vice Incident will be on Night Flight Plus in October, along with Terror of Frankenstein. You can also buy the DVD directly from Tim. (Highly recommended.) Just email tim2kirk@yahoo.com. His books Christ Never Showed Up and Burnt can be found at Pelekinesis Press or Amazon. Sex Madness Revealed is available on Amazon on Prime or with ads on Kino Lorber's YouTube page. And The El Duce Tapes is available from Arrow Video.
We cannot recommend Tim's work enough. It's all incredibly thoughtful, unique work that looks at what it means to be human in bittersweet and darkly funny ways. But it's always honest. You will not regret supporting Tim in his work.

This week we're back with another episode of After Dark, and this is one we've been kicking around for a few months that we just finally decided to record. Join us as Anthony tells The Bride about all of the appearances of the justice system in Mary Shelley's novel. It's like a YouTube reaction video, but without the video! And we're just getting angry about injustice!
We're back with one last Hotel Transylvania. And this one feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. There's a good idea here, buried in a lazy execution. But we do get to see human versions of some of our monster friends. Join us as we advocate for zombie worker rights, get confused about the difference between goblins and gremlins, and finally reach the day when we have to face the deep, dark, truthful Cave of Reflexión.

This week your horror hosts are getting a little personal. We're talking about all the ways each of our neurodivergences intersect with our fascination with horror and other genre stories. Join us for as we discuss the autistic-coded Frankenstein and the Werewolf as a metaphor for ADHD, among other things. And as always, feel free to reach out to us if you want to hear more about our experiences, or have questions about your own. We're always open to having conversations, about Frankenstein, horror in general, or anything else.
It's time for the horrific conclusion to the Human Centipede franchise. Again, CW: Everything. If anything makes you uncomfortable, probably skip this movie. We'll try to give you the slightly less disturbing audio rundown. This time we've got all new characters again, but somehow we also have a few familiar faces? How can it be? Anything is possible when a human centipede is 100% medically accurate! Join us as we go to the world's worst prison (and that's saying something because all prisons are awful). We're discussing terrible snacks, faulty bullet physics, and the most unlucky woman alive. We also talk about the terrible American carceral justice system and the for-profit prison industrial complex, because if we're going to talk about this truly upsetting film, we're going to find some kind of purpose for it. Proceed with caution.

This week we're back with America's favorite monster family. It's been awhile since we visited 1313 Mockingbird Lane, but it's nice to see things never change in the Munsters house. This week Herman has gotten himself mixed up with some bank robbers (again) and he's also taking dancing lessons from Don Rickles. Join us for Don't Bank on Herman and Dance With Me Herman!
We're back at the Hotel Transylvania! Or, maybe not. We're on summer vacation FROM the Hotel Transylvania, on a cruise ship, which is basically just a hotel on the water. Join us for semi-consensual werewolf tranquilizing, the Deathtrap Tango, and a completely unnecessary giant dog.

This week over on Patreon, we're back with a free-flowing chat about the State of the Horror Union! We're discussing all the big releases from the first half of 2023 along with some upcoming stuff and a few things from 2022. And don't worry it's mostly spoiler-free!
CW: Like, basically everything. We're back with more Human Centipede, like it or not. This one ratchets up the unpleasantness of the first film exponentially. But for real, we tried to discuss this film a little more delicately than we do with most films we discuss just because the content is so rough, even hearing about it is likely going to overwhelming for some folks. But it's still A LOT. Don't be afraid to stop this one if it gets to be too much. Or skip it altogether if you'd prefer. We'll certainly understand. But, if you feel up to joining us, we'll be talking about a clever meta concept executed with absolute disdain for its audience, the worst therapist of all time, the worst neighbor of all time, and the worst parking garage attendant of all time. (Don't worry, we're escaping back to the Hotel Transylvania next week!)

This week over on Patreon, we've reached the final section of Kiersten White's brilliant retelling of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Turns out that the previous sections set a lot of things in motion that now have perfectly come together into a series of incredible twists.
Here we reveal the truth about Elizabeth's desires, Victor's past and his intention for the future, and of course we finally meet Frankenstein's Monster, who has been lurking in the margins up to this point.
We're back at the Hotel Transylvania, baby! Join us as we montage through six years like it's nothing, then travel to the gentrified spooky forest, a vampire summer camp with a complicated relationship to child safety, and even... California! Terrified scream We'll be meeting secret star of the film Blobby, Johnny's well-meaning but misguided parents, and Dracula's not-so-well-meaning dad. Oh yeah, and Dennis, the newest addition to the Dracula family.

And now, for the THRILLING conclusion of League of Frankenstein! Yes, we have more literary characters mixed together haphazardly in an erotic mashup for the ages. Join us for a bloodless surgery, an unpleasant experience with a bale of hay, an unexpectedly fun visit to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and Victor and Elizabeth finally get one last bang for the road.
Welp, here we are, folks. In the surgically scrubbed basement of a weirdly modern home deep in the woods of Germany, presumably somewhere near a dance club called Bunker. Join us as we watch the world's most upsetting PowerPoint presentation (and that's saying a lot), learn the perils of indoor swimming pools, and try to figure out the proper etiquette for when you enter a room and find a Surprise Human Centipede.
And most importantly: ALWAYS ASK FOR A WARRANT. Whether you're hiding a Human Centipede or not, ALWAYS ASK FOR A WARRANT.

This week over on Patreon, we're back with our third discussion of The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, and wouldn't you believe it, Elizabeth's descent is getting even darker. This section covers Part 2 of the novel, which covers familiar territory from Shelley's novel, particularly the deaths of William and Justine. Seeing it all from Elizabeth's side is all the more heartbreaking too.
It's time to Zing, fiends! We're going all the way to Hotel Transylvania, where we'll all definitely fit in and not have to disguise ourselves at all. Join us as we learn about skeleton consent, cannibal Slipknot fans, and table pod-racing.

This week we decided it's been a while since we talked about This Ain't the Munsters XXX, so it seemed high time we looked at some more Frankenporn. So we're discussing the first half of Digital Playground's episodic film League of Frankenstein, which is kind of a parody of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Van Helsing?
It's Frankenstein, but for ladies! This week your Horror Hosts have brought in Special Guest Ryan Nanni to discuss this surprisingly smart and decidedly feminist take on Frankenstein. Join us as we make a big batch of Blood Gin, redefine the term "well hung", and realize that we've been fighting a Voltron of our neighbors all along.

This week over on Patreon, we're back with the second part of our discussion on Kiersten White's fantastic novel that retells Frankenstein from Elizabeth's perspective.
This episode finishes up part 1 of the novel, and things are really starting to come together! Surely, it's all going to work out for Elizabeth in the end, right? Right??
This is ostensibly a sequel to last week's film. It has easily twice as much nudity and violence, and yet still has a more coherent plot. It also has a blind, cannibalistic bird person with echolocation and psychic powers. Join us as we give Dr. Frankenstein a taste of his own medicine like 5 times, try the world's worst Trojan horse plan, and discuss the pros and cons of poisonous spikes.

This week over on Patreon, we're discussing two songs by shock rocker Alice Cooper. One is a pretty straightforward rocker using Frankenstein's monster as a metaphor for adolescence, and the other one is an exceedingly horny song that's mostly about food?
What can you say about this movie? It has so little to say, that you could write out all of the dialogue on a post-it note. But it does have so many flappy bats, some really intense zooms, a secret vampire girl, and a werewolf ex machina. Take your brain out, put it in a specimen jar beside the couch, and enjoy!

This week over on Patreon, we're starting our next Frankenbook Club selection. For the next few installments, we'll be discussing this fantastic retelling of Mary Shelley's novel from the perspective of Elizabeth. It's a clever, feminist look at trauma, control, and unreliable narrators.
With a title like this, you know there's gonna be a MONSTER FIGHT! It's gonna take a while to get there, though. But first, we're gonna get the gang (of past-their-prime genre actors) together and we're gonna put on a show to save the rec. center. And if the waiter at the rec. center occasionally slips acid in someone's coffee, well, that's just the price of doing business with evil hippies! This week at patreon.com/thefrankencast we're discussing this beautiful and visceral short from Jennifer Donohue. She recently shared the story with us and we were eager to talk about this painfully honest meditation on grief in the modern world. It's a story about the physical objects that carry on after we're gone that continue to tell our histories. And it's a story of the tumultuous year of 2020, when we were having to fight against systemic inequality and racial injustice in the midst of global health and economic crises. It's handled in a way that feels deeply personal and specific, and yet universal at the same time. A lot still feels uncertain in the world, but we hope that you all are able to find peace whenever possible, and can find ways to grieve when you need to. To be continued...
We're presenting this full episode here on the main feed thanks to the support of our patrons, and because we're so excited to share Jennifer's work with you all. Read "A Country of Eternal Light" at Apex Magazine. And if you like what you heard, you can find more about Jennifer at http://authorizedmusings.blogspot.com/. And of course, you can support us at patreon.com/thefrankencast.
We're really excited about Jennifer Donohue's "A Country of Eternal Light" so we may have gone a little overboard. One ongoing segment we have over at patreon.com/thefrankencast is Frankencast After Dark, where Anthony is joined by The Bride to dig deeper into topics discussed briefly in main feed episodes. The Bride read Jennifer's story and had some feelings that she wanted to share. This is an intensely emotional conversation, but we wanted to make it available to all of our listeners.
We're talking about grief and love in the time of protest. A lot still feels uncertain in the world, but we hope that you all are able to find peace whenever possible, and can find ways to grieve when you need to. To be continued...

This movie is jam-packed full of killer Nazi zombies, but after last week, it actually seems pretty grounded. It's basically a good ol' fashioned hard-boiled war movie... until it isn't. Join us as we discuss our future hopes and dreams while walking through a minefield, put the biggest scare quotes of all time around the word "unconscious", and meet our second disembodied-and-yet-still-alive lady head in as many movies. This week we're discussing the short-lived and mostly-forgotten dark comedy TV series from the late 70s, Struck By Lightning. We're specifically discussing the pilot, since it appears that's all that still survives. But if anyone knows where to track down the other 11 episodes, let us know!
Feeling some deja vu? This time it's a different Frankenstein, and a different army. This time our monsters are a lot less friendly. But that makes sense when you're dealing with Nazi monsters. Join us as we run our shaky POV cameras up and down hallways, make new friends like the Mosquito Man and Propeller Head, and learn the TRUE meaning of the phrase "I'm of two minds about the situation." Oh, and we meet the world's most upsetting teddy bear. The Buddi Bear from Child's Play has got nothing on this one.

This week over on patreon.com/thefrankencast we discussed this absolutely brilliant narrative poem by Elizabeth R. McClellan that explores the thoughts of Victor Frankenstein's never-living second creation, the Bride he gave up on. It's a heartbreakingly beautiful poem that we cannot recommend highly enough.

This week we're continuing Decem-Burton by gazing longingly out of our snowglobe-esque window and putting on our best grandparent voices to tell the tale of the little robot boy who became a neighborhood celebrity in spite of, or because of, his scissor hands. It's time for Decem-Burton! We're kicking things off with a more recent film from Burton's catalog: the 2012 full-length stop-motion remake of his 1984 short film Frankenweenie. Join us as we go to a particularly upsetting school board meeting, join baseball to make our dad happy (relatable content), and face off against Rodan, Gamera, Sea Monkey Gremlins, and a were-flappy cat(?).

We're headed to Japan once again with an absolutely wild movie that made for one of our most fun and fascinating conversations to date. We're joined by our friend and resident Japan expert Alex Heichelbech and we're looking at what happens when a Frankensteinian mad scientist has a run-in with a famous 90s Japanese death cult. Turns out, hilarity ensues? Join us as we meet the only Spanish hunchback in Japan, make our monsters watch porn, and levitate dolls for no particular reason.

We're back with another lovely author chat! This week we are chatting with Refe Tuma, the thoughtful and entertaining writer of Frances and the Monster. This is a delightful book, safe to be enjoyed by people of all ages and it is packed with overt and subtle references to Frankenstein and plenty of surprising twists and turns along the way. We had a lovely time talking with Refe, and highly recommend checking out Frances and the Monster.

Well, there was a Wanted poster in dodgy French that told us that Van Helsing is Wanted, and we were happy to provide. If you're not happy about it, blame The Generic Order of the Regular Knights of Totally Not the Templars. We've still got a little bit more Monster Mashing today. This time, with an animated feature from a way-past-its-prime DIC Entertainment. This hour-long special boasts an incredibly rare showdown between classic creature-feature era monsters and modern day slasher monsters. In today's Very Special Episode, we are joined by the delightful Addie Tsai, author of the new novel Unwieldy Creatures. It's a brilliant meta retelling of Frankenstein through a queer and biracial/bicultural lens. The book is fun and fascinating, and so is its author. We had an absolute blast talking with Addie and we think you'll enjoy listening in on our conversation. And we truly cannot recommend Unwieldy Creatures enough.

Well, fiends, we did it. You monsters have stuck with us through a full year of this nonsense. We'll hopefully have many more years to come, but first, let's celebrate this milestone. To do so, we dug back as far as we can go to watch the oldest Frankenstein movie possible, the 1910 short made by Thomas Edison's film production company. Join us as we melt in reverse out of a cauldron and then disappear into a mirror.
After we talk about the short, we spend a little time discussing our favorite films and episodes of the year. We would love to hear your opinions!

We'll count you in if you want to press play and watch along with us. NOTE: We're also going to be releasing a video version of this very soon so you can actually see your two favorite Horror Hosts responding in real time.

Director's Commentary: Terror of Frankenstein is such a unique and exciting film and we've been waiting to discuss it since we started the show. We'll go to a creepy wax museum full of crime robots, meet the dreadfully annoying Cousin Phantom of the Opera, revel in the absolute joy of Herman destroying an entire police station, and hit on the mysteriously caked-up waitress that look suspiciously like a familiar 8-foot-tall Frankenstein that we all know and love.

It's Munsters Month part 3, and we're moving on to the most modern version of the Munsters we've seen so far. And the least familiar. Herman's not exactly a Frankenstein, Grandpa is sometimes a weird bat monster, and Marilyn is actually kind of terrifying. And EVERYONE is very sexy.
