How ready are you to embrace grief as a natural part of life?
In this episode together, I'm excited to bring Shauna Dukes back to the show. Throughout this episode, Shauna talks with me about her grief journey after her book was published, and how she wrestled with the idea that grief was this massive, scary monster creeping in the dark that would forever chase her. She also talks about the Holistic Grief Academy for Mothers she created, how mothers who join the academy heal and become part of her healing process, and how it all changed when she realized grief isn't a monster but part of who she is.

What if this tragedy that just hit your family came to transform your life for the better?
In this episode, I'm joined by Ashlee and Michael Cramer, shining examples of "how to do things right" when facing crises and emerging stronger and better on the other side. Only four years after Patrice, Ashlee's husband and Michael's father, passed after battling lymphoma, Michael was diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of blood cancer. Far from questioning their fate or spending time and energy asking God why, they started a mental, spiritual, and physical taxing battle against the disease, emerging victorious, stronger than ever, and united by an unbreakable bond they (luckily for us) decided to share with the world.
They host the "Michael and Mom Talk Cancer" podcast and lead cancer support groups in the Cancer Buddy app and the app Circles, Michael the "Cancer Survivor Support Group" on Fridays at 5 pm, and Ashlee the "Coping as Cancer Caregivers" on Saturdays at 10 pm.
Throughout this episode full of invaluable life lessons, Ashlee and Michael share details of their journey battling cancer and the lessons that battle taught them about healing, compassion, and unconditional love. Additionally, they share their thoughts on using joy to cope with grief and pain, the healing power of kindness and connection, and more.

Have you conceived a plan for when you or a loved one passes away?
There is a certain resistance, almost superstitious, in Western societies to discuss end-of-life affairs. Yet, things like having a valid and current will or letting our loved ones know whether we prefer a burial or a cremation could save them from the pain of making decisions while dealing with death and loss.
In this episode, I'm joined by the amazing Greg Barnsdale. Throughout his experience as a Funeral Director and Certified Executor Advisor, Greg noticed that lack of planning on end-of-life affairs put people through a lot of anguish that could've been easily avoided by planning specific details beforehand. He wanted to do something about it and help people, so he wrote a book and came up with "Do Not Ignore Your Mortality: Practical Advice From a Funeral & Financial Insider," which he conceived as a conversation starter, yet it is a lot more than that.
Throughout this episode, Greg talks about The Mortality Mindset Movement, an idea he created to entice his followers to discuss final arrangements openly and in the most natural way possible. He also shares tips and advice on how to start end-of-life discussions, the right time to have them, what matters he believes people should focus on discussing before it is too late, and much more.

Shying away from adversity is a normal reaction; we are programmed to escape pain and seek comfort. Yet, as you'll learn from today's guest, facing hardships is the shortest way through them. In fact, once we name them, they start to lose power over us.
In today's episode, I'm joined by the incredibly inspiring Nick Klingensmith. Nick is a 4-time cancer survivor, type-1 diabetic, and recovering alcoholic with 4 herniated discs, nerve damage, and sleep apnea, who chose to stop relishing in victim mode and became a motivational speaker, mindset coach, and obstacle course racer. He is also the author of "Through The Fire," a beautiful book that narrates how Nick got from the dark place he was to where he is now, physically and, most importantly, mentally.
Throughout this episode, you'll hear Nick's inspiring story of resilience and mental fortitude, his inner work to stand where he stands today, and what he relied on to never throw the towel. He talks about the incredible power of acceptance, its role in his life, and the importance of stopping comparing ourselves; he also shares five tips to stay resilient every day, and more.
Tune in and listen to episode 204 of Grief and Happiness, and let Nick inspire you to face what's stopping you from thriving, accept the parts of it you can't change, and never stop trying until you accomplish your goals.

For many people, getting diagnosed with a degenerative disease is enough to keep them from living their lives. They stop going out, traveling, having fun, and doing the things they love, consumed by the idea that their role now is to wait for the inevitable. Some people, on the other hand, do the exact opposite.
In this episode, I'm joined by the extraordinary Cheryl Tsieprati, co-author of "One Blink At At Time," a book she co-authored with her late husband, Ismael Tsieprati, in which they alternate between chapters to share their experiences as they went through Ismael's fight with ALS. Cheryl worked for 40 years in the healthcare industry and has over 25 years of experience in training, consulting, instructional design, writing, and editing. As a journalist, she received an Associated Press, Western Region award for her work on the "Retailing in the '80s" newspaper series. Cheryl also gives presentations, sharing her story and teaching people how to live a happy and meaningful life despite adversity.
Throughout our conversation, you'll hear Cheryl's fantastic story of resilience and insistence in enjoying life despite seeing her husband struggle with a degenerative disease. Cheryl also talks about how she found out about Ismael's condition by accident, explains the meaning behind the book's name, talks about the importance of focusing on living to the fullest and enjoying life despite the circumstances, and more.

In this episode together, I'm joined by a true light in the world and Empress of Aging, Sue Patton Thoele. Sue is an "Emeritus-Most-Everything," Public Speaker, Seminar Leader, former Hospice Chaplain and Psychotherapist, and the Author of 13 beautiful books. Throughout this episode, Sue shares her thoughts on grieving as an act of surrendering and how allowing it into our lives naturally and organically heals it. We also talk about the common mistake of grieving failures and things we regret not doing, the importance of paying attention to our needs, and taking good care of ourselves while grieving.

It doesn't matter how painful the grief we are going through is; the sooner we get ourselves out of the "why me, poor me, why this happened to me" mindset, and let the pain, the anger, the sadness, and the frustration get through us, the sooner we'll heal. The best way to heal is to feel.

We live in a time where, for whatever reason, grief is still seen as a very abstract thing, even though it's super concrete. It's super real. It's tangible. It's palatable; you can feel its presence.
In today's episode, I'm joined by The Grief Gal, Rachel Tenpenny. She is a Grief Expert, Life-after-loss Coach, Emotional Well-being Specialist, and the co-founder of Teamotions, teas for emotional well-being. During our conversation full of hope, Rachel talks about how she transformed her pain into tangible healing tools for others, why treating grief as an abstract thing is a mistake, and why we should cultivate grief just as we cultivate fitness. We also discuss the harmful effects of unresolved grief, the need for practical and actionable items for grievers to mitigate grief, and the importance of caring for grievers instead of trying to understand them.

Everyone deals with trauma differently. Two kids living in the same household, raised by the same parents, in the same loving environment will develop different reactions to the same setback. In any case, having someone to sit down and share fears and concerns is crucial.
Developing a system to process the shit life makes us through is essential; otherwise, that trauma will come back in different forms and haunt us.
In this episode, I'm joined by the inspiring Dana Neiger, CHRO, Co-founder and Entrepreneur, Author, and Speaker. Despite her short age, Dana endured a lot of trauma and suffered massive losses. She lost her parents in her 20s and her brother 10 years later. Many years and several hours of therapy later, she married, formed a gorgeous family, and got the closest she could to her version of a happy life.
We had a fantastic conversation about relying on therapy for healing trauma, writing as a trauma-processing mechanism, and the importance of developing supportive relationships. We also discuss Dana's grieving process, the void we feel when the closest people don't say anything about our loss, and why self-care is crucial in grief.
Additionally, we talk about Dana's book, "Before I Knew It, They Were Gone," what inspired her to write it, the transformation she made thanks to therapy, and so much more.

Whenever we avoid discussing death in front of our children, we might think we are sparing them suffering, but we are not. Keeping things from children only creates more room for fear than anything; it is not protection.

She is the Author of "Cultivating the Doula Heart," "The Doula's Guide to Living Fully and Dying Prepared," and the children's book "Map Of Memory Lane," a beautifully illustrated story especially designed to deal with kids' curious nature and help them find an answer to some of their big questions about death and grief.
Throughout this episode, Francesca talks about her journey from childbirth educator to writing and educating about the "other end of life." She shares details of that process, which ended up with her developing the University of Vermont's End-of-Life Doula Professional Certificate Programs.
Francesca also offers guidance on how to approach discussions about death, grief, and loss with children, what we can do to help them develop the language to deal with it, how to make them feel safe, and more.

How often does your monkey mind jump uncontrollably from branch to branch? There's a way of limiting your monkey mind's "playground time," and it's simpler than you think.
In today's episode, I'm joined by the Speaker, Meditation Guide, and Author of "Be You: The Journey of Self Realization," Chris Cirak. Chris is a master at transforming sophisticated topics into accessible, meaningful, and inspiring experiences. He believes that when things happen that we didn't want to happen (and once we stop resisting and finally manage to go through the feelings those things brought up), we become a bigger, better, and deeper version of ourselves.
Throughout this episode, Chris shares his experiences and how he realized that everything we see is a reflection of who we are, how journaling helped him see the things he was hiding from himself, and how everything changed for him when he realized how simple and small is the present moment.
In addition, we talk about understanding grief and the feelings it brings as part of our self-defense mechanism, the importance of grounding ourselves, why we should be aware of and abandon our mental labeling tendencies, and much more.

In today's episode, I'm joined by the amazingly creative and compassionate Deborah DeLisi. She is the mother of two daughters, one in heaven and one on earth, and the founder of The Abundant Love Project, a worldwide movement that started when she realized she could transform her grief into love. Grief and happiness are two words that we rarely find in the same sentence, let alone think of them as different parts of the same journey. After an unsolicited and vast experience in grieving, I've discovered that it is possible to grieve and be happy simultaneously, and my mission is to help people realize that.
In this first episode together, I share parts of my journey through grief, a short version of my life's story, and my several encounters with the death of loved ones. We also explore the healing I found in writing, building a community, sharing my experiences, and helping others navigate through their grief.
I've dedicated many years to building groups specifically designed to help people grieving, and I became a Certified Happy for No Reason Trainer. I am also a Grief Transformational Expert and have a Masters' degree in English, with a Concentration in Writing. I have over 30 years of experience teaching writing and composition, writing three textbooks in the process, and I've recently published "Loving and Living Your Way Through Grief, " a book that provides guidance for those navigating rough times.
Tune in and listen to the first episode of Grief and Happiness, and join me in this journey of discoveries, healing, and transformation through a healthy relationship with grief.
