Plan for Succession Even if You Plan to Work Forever
You may be one of those business owners too busy being successful to think about succession planning. Nonetheless, it is folly not to plan for your succession, and your strategy should follow the old adage of “hope for the best and plan for the worst.”
Assuming the worst—that you would unexpectedly leave the business tomorrow—do you have plans for a transition in management? What happens to your ownership interest? And how do you use your stake to provide for a spouse and family?
Key questions are whether you want the business to continue with family members in charge or if you want to sell your interest to provide for a spouse or other family members. Identify your goals and establish a succession and exit strategy with the goal of retirement.

In 2016, Rashunda became the CEO of The Innovative Entrepreneurs Hub, a Los Angeles-based hybrid company that provides shared workspace and business development services for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
The Innovative Entrepreneurs Hub provides a wide range of services from business formation, branding, marketing, bookkeeping, business credit building, and business funding. In the summer of 2022, Rashunda founded Our Culture Hub, an Inglewood-based curated retailer that features more than 30 Black-owned brands under one roof. Our Culture Hub brings together a unique collection of fashion, lifestyle, home, and beauty products from a variety of African American entrepreneurs. This curated retail store is a place for business owners to see their dreams come true, a place to give their products a home, and a place to provide a stepping stone to the next level.
Rashunda has been on the organizing team of TEDxSouthCentral, formally TEDxCrenshaw, since 2015.
In 2022, Rashunda received the license to host TEDxInglewood, which will have its inaugural conference in August 2023. If you thought Christmas and Hanukkah were the only two holidays this time of the year, get ready for another reason to celebrate! Kwanzaa, meaning "first" in Swahili, signifies the first fruits of the harvest.
Every year, from December 26 to January 1, many people of African descent in America commemorate Kwanzaa.
What is Kwanzaa and why is it celebrated?
Kwanzaa is a time for families and communities to come together to remember the past and celebrate African American culture. Created in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga, Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrating history, values, family, community, and culture. It was created in 1966 by Pan-African activist and academic Maulana Karenga Karenga, born Ron Everett, who created the holiday during a particularly tumultuous time in American history. Karenga was a member of the US Organization, or simply US, a black nationalist group providing relief after the Watts riots broke out in 1965.
According to TIME, this turbulent season is when Everett created Kwanzaa. "He saw that black people here had no holidays of their own and felt that holidays give a people a sense of identity and direction." Imamu Clyde Halisi, then national chairman of the US, told the magazine in 1972.
Kwanzaa is observed for seven days, and there is a different value for each day On each night, a candle is lit to observe the nguzo saba, the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
The seven principles of Kwanzaa are Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith).
