Sermon from New City Church.
Romans is a letter that Paul certainly meant for all Christians to read, even though it specifically addressed the Christians in Rome during the first century. One of the main purposes of Romans is to lead Christians to live in harmony, “with one voice,” to glorify God together (Romans 15:5-6). The reason he wrote this letter is due to the fact that the early Jesus movement was made up of two dramatically different people groups with distinctive values in their past: the Jews and the Gentiles. At that time, people were streaming into the church (Jesus’s movement) from both groups, and they were having to learn how their new relationship with Jesus affected their relationship with one another. In other words, they needed to learn (with their heads, hearts, and hands) what it meant to live in the kingdom of God for real.
Pastor Mike talks about his experience learning about union with Christ (0:00). General reflections on Romans 6 (6:00). Is Christianity just a battle of the mind (17:29). What's the distinction between the practice of mindset and learning theology (23:31). Mindset and CBT (30:12).

Mike, Chase, Dan, and Lindsey talk through the introduction to our series on Jonah.
Topics include:
Jonah is a story of God’s grace that truly points to the story of God’s grace. But God’s grace is not always straightforward: we wrestle with the fairness of it, we think we are too far gone for it, and we are often afraid of what it means for our lives. Jonah reveals to us a God whose mercy is for the sinner and the saint and points us to a Savior who was cast out that we might be brought in.
Mike, Dave, Lindsey, and Dan discuss the sermon from Sunday. How has the Holy Spirit worked in your heart through this series? What are the enemies to generosity? What role does money and possessions play in our relationships? What does it mean to be with Jesus in His generosity?
2 Corinthians 8:1-15; 9:6-15
Scripture seems to reveal a rhythm to generosity. There is a progression that takes place to form us into people who demonstrate the generosity of God. Recognizing this pattern is essential to us becoming who God intends for us to be: generous people of love. In this sermon we will discuss the supply of our generosity, the breadth of generosity, and the obstacles to generosity.
In your experience, what have been the biggest obstacles to you practicing generosity?
Spend some time with your family or friends at dinner this week sharing how God has used the generosity of others to meet your needs at different times in your life.
Look over the four obstacles of generosity that Pastor Dave shared in the sermon and reflect. Which of them is the biggest stumbling block to you becoming more generous?
What can you do to remove that hurdle?Take an inventory of all that God has entrusted to you (personality, time, gifts/skills/abilities, resources, etc.) and write out ways you can intentionally give to others this week.
Mike, Dan, and Lindsey discuss the sermon from Sunday. How do we begin to take inventory of our stuff and spending? How do we respond when we're not feeling so generous?
Sermon from New City Church as part of our Kingdom Practices series.Application Questions-Set aside time to contemplate the riches you have in Christ in the gospel to prepare your heart to see your finances/possessions afresh. What arises in your heart/mind as you contemplate a generous response?-Take inventory of what you have. What do you have? Where is it going?-Give cheerfully as to the Lord!
Mike, Dan, Chase, and Lindsey discuss the sermon from Sunday. How do we bring a mindset that we are rich in Christ into our suffering?
The generosity of God to His people in Christ is the foundation and fuel for our generosity. To become like Him we need to consistently deepen our appreciation for all we’ve been given in Christ. We will consider more of these riches we have in Christ: redemption, forgiveness, wisdom, inheritance, and the gift of the Spirit.-Ask the Lord to open the eyes of your heart to see the riches you have in Christ.-How can you apply the riches you have in Christ to a specific situation in your life?-Consider the words of Jesus: “Freely you have received, freely give.”
Dave, Mike, and Dan discuss the sermon from Sunday. How do we develop a mindset that leads toward generosity?
Ephesians 1:3-14
When someone investigates the life of Jesus, they find Him to be a generous person. He is free and open with His time, resources, and affection - even to the point of giving away His very life. As we seek to follow His way, we will need to learn the secret of how He lived such a life. What we find is that Jesus’s generosity is sourced in the generous love of His Father for Him. God Himself: Father, Son, and Spirit, is a generous God! As we draw close to His heart we too will become generous. Our current series focuses on the generosity of God, how we can become increasingly generous, and how to practice the way of Jesus’s generosity.

Dave, Mike, Chase, and Dan talk through the sermon from Sunday. The kingdom of God is at hand - how do we faithful live in light of this kingdom?
Focus - Fixing our eyes on Jesus.
Being in Christ leads us to live New Creation lives.
2 Corinthians 5:9-17
So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Dave, Mike, and Dan discuss - what it means to be devoted to the Lord, how other things can "shepherd" us, and comets.
The advent of Jesus was the arrival of God’s shalom on earth. Jesus’ kingdom is one of peace, where what is broken is restored and what is incomplete is made whole. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27

Sermon from New City Church, December 17, 2023.
Luke 2:8-18
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

Romans 8:18-25
In the ache of what’s been lost
For the joy of what’s to come
We’re looking to the cross
And to the resurrected Son
These bitter days are numbered
This world’s been overcome
We put our hope in God and God alone
This Advent Renewal series will help you focus on the big, true story of Jesus this Christmas.

Fasting is a Kingdom Practice where we learn to deny ourselves in order to experience more of Jesus in our lives and become people of love.
How can following Jesus in the practice of fasting specifically help you become more of a person of love?
What areas in your life as an apprentice of Jesus do you sense the most resistance in becoming like Him? Could fasting be an aid?
Have you ever participated in a communal fast? Do you have any questions about it?
Sermon - Introduction to the Kingdom Practice of Fasting
Matthew 9:14-17
Big Idea: Jesus assumes that His apprentices will use fasting as a means to amplify our prayers in order that we might experience His kingdom in our lives with more fullness.
“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:17-18
Some practical advice:
In this episode, Mike, Dave, and Dan further discuss the request for God to deliver us as found in the Lord's Prayer.
Matthew 6:9-13
Big Idea: As disciples of Jesus we are to regularly pray for deliverance from evil so that we will progressively see the light of the Kingdom of God overcome the darkness in our world.
In this episode - Mike, Dave, Chase, and Dan discuss some application around the concept of forgiveness in the Lord's Prayer.
In this group chat some of our leaders discuss answers to these questions:
In this episode of Sermon+ - Mike, Dave, Chase, and Dan discuss the sermon on the Lord's Prayer. The Lord knows what we need and tells us what we need.
In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus actually tells us what we need, and how we should pray for it. It's hard to not grow confused with all the nuance of desires, needs, ambitions, reactions etc. Especially if Jesus tells us to pray about anything and everything! What does the Scripture actually teach about this? How does Jesus want us to approach the subject of supplication, and even intercession in our prayer life?
Dave, Mike, and Dan discuss Sunday's sermon - specifically relating to the kingdom of God.
Listen in as some of our elders and members of our shepherding team discuss their experiences with prayer. Together, they touch on some of the questions we received from our recent prayer survey:
-Is there a certain pattern of prayer that God desires from us?
-How do we deal with distractions in prayer?
-What do we do when prayer feels monotonous?
-How to process silence in prayer.
-Offer some help to those who struggle to pray with others in groups.
The main practice that we are learning during these weeks is to pray as Jesus prayed, and He gave us this model in what is known as the Lord’s Prayer. This week, we’ll look at what it means to pray “our Father in heaven” and “Hallowed be Your Name.” We will see that learning to pray like Jesus means developing a relationship with God as Father and cultivating His glory as our deepest desire.
In this "bonus" episode, Dave, Mike, Chase, and Dan clarify some of these terms that are used when talking about prayer.
Dave, Mike, Chase, and Dan discuss the first sermon from our series on prayer. In this conversation, they discuss some of the value in adding some structure to your prayer life.
Prayer, in one sense, is the practice that is interwoven into every other practice. But cultivating a flourishing prayer rhythm in large part depends on how we define success with prayer! Why do we pray? How should we pray? How can my mind be renewed to not only have a better understanding of prayer, but a better practice of it? God created us to be in relationship with Him - and His gift of prayer is one of the best ways for us to grow closer to Him!
A crucial part of experiencing life with God in Christ, and being empowered by His Spirit to accomplish His mission in our world, is the use of Spiritual practices that create time and space for God in our lives. In this series we'll begin to explore some of these practices together.

“If your words had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.” Psalm 119:92
“Psalm 119 is about life’s painful realities. And it is about the gifts of God. And it is about how those two meet, talk, come to grips, and find life’s highest delight.” David Powlison
Big Idea: Psalm 119 helps us bring the realities of our life into the pages of Scripture. Or rather, it helps us take the realities of Scripture into the pages of our life. The presence of pain and suffering in our world is not something to be neglected or watered down with theology. It is something that we are to bring to the God who knows, sees, hears, cares, and can do something about it! Psalm 119 is spoken out of fierce, ongoing struggle - but though the psalmist sinks into darkness, he refuses to stay there. He steps out into the light.

Sermon from New City Church - September 3, 2023
Paul’s letter to the Galatians is a call to stand firm in the freedom to which Christ has called us. The good news of Jesus Christ, which is the message that Paul preached, is that Jesus’s death and resurrection has set us free from the power of sin and death. And the gift of His Spirit is now the means by which we live according to God’s will now. In essence, as followers of Jesus the new creation life He called us to has started now, and we are to live in that freedom by faith.

Series - Servant King
This first century biography shows us how God became the Servant King and is establishing His kingdom on earth — all through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Mark’s story of Jesus is deeply shaped by the exodus event of the Jewish people when God rescued them from bondage in Egypt. Jesus saw what He was doing as the new and final exodus for God’s people. This means that Jesus delivers his people out of bondage and into freedom, He is reveals who God truly is, and He leads us on the way to the Promised Land.

The advent season is a time where we get to consider the true story of how God has rescued humanity through the coming of His Son, and how He will finish this rescue through the second coming of Jesus! Over the next few weeks we are going to try to get a big picture look at how this story unfolded and where we fit into it. Our theme is “Rest in the Shadows” - in this theme we will see a double meaning to “shadows.” On the one hand the shadows represent the darkness and difficulty we face in the story of God, but on the other hand we find in the shadows the presence of the One who will one day banish all darkness from our lives. Join us as we seek to find our rest in the shadows this advent season!

The season of Advent is a time where we reflect on the coming of Jesus to the world. Jesus said that His coming was spoken of in the Old Testament: the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. We looked last week at how the “Law,” the first five books of the Bible, prepared us for the coming of the offspring of a woman, a king, who would reverse the effects of the curse and our rebellion. This week we will look at the “Prophets,” and we will see that we really do need a King. However, we don’t need just any king, but God’s chosen and anointed King. We invite you to come see how the Prophets prepare us for a King who rules unlike any other King - Jesus!
