To best serve older adults and increase the age-friendliness of your community, it is important to ask for and record information from older adults on a variety of topics. Collecting resident input provides valuable insight on how the public feels about community issues. This information can guide strategic decisions and priorities for your community.
Engaging the community strengthens relationships, promotes transparency, and helps inform leaders on seniors’ actual needs. Furthermore, consistent data collection over time provides insights into shifting preferences, trends, and other needs within a community. However, persons aged 50 and above are less likely to complete surveys.
Today we pleased to welcome back Tauhric Brown, President and CEO of CICOA Aging and In-Home Solutions to talk about the power of senior voices in surveys and what can be done to better engage those voices.

According to AARP, more than 90 percent of people aged 60 or older want to stay in their home and community for as long as possible. One primary barrier to aging in place is when the home is no longer accessible or presents a fall risk. Safe at Home, a service offered by CICOA helps individuals age in place through home accessibility modifications. Working with local contractors and funded by philanthropic dollars, CICOA’s Safe at Home department completes more than 60 home modifications projects each year.
This year CICOA received a $20,000 grant from Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership® (INHP), a local Community Development Financial Institution supporting affordable housing in Indianapolis specifically supporting CICOA’s Safe at Home Program, providing home safety and accessibility modifications that enhance mobility, promote independence, and prevent falls for older adults and people with disabilities.
Now, you may recall back in February, that we aired on episode about CICOA’s newly launched Pet Connect Pilot Program, a program that providing pet food and supplies to low-income and homebound seniors. Returning today, to both update us on the Pet Connect program and to discuss this an exciting new collaboration with INHP is Tauhric Brown, President & CEO of CICOA Aging and In-Home Solutions.

Guided imagery is a relaxation technique that draws on your ability to visualize and daydream. It’s easy to practice whenever and wherever you are. All you have to do is imagine a peaceful scene in your mind. It works best if you incorporate as many sensory details as possible: what you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste. So you’re not just thinking it—you’re living it. When you engage your imagination in this way, your body and your nervous system will respond as if you’re actually there. This technique has been proven to reduce anxiety, pain, and depression symptoms. It also aids with sleep.
Today Terri and Tina, discuss the benefits, mindsets, and challenges associated with guided imagery meditation to guide you as embrace and explore this valuable relaxation technique.

“Once a caregiver, always a caregiver – it changes you that much.”
That is a quote from Winnie the Pooh about weeds and flowers is a perfect summation of the message in Life Giving Dementia Care. With the right perspective, weeds are wondrous. With the right perspective, the caregiving experience can be one of confidence, compassion, growth, and even joy.
We are joined today by Toni Kanzler. Toni wears several hats: wife, mother, friend, CPA, entrepreneur, private school administrator, non-profit volunteer, and board member. But it was as a daughter that she had the privilege of being her mother’s caregiver during her years-long battle with dementia.
From the summer of 2013 until the spring of 2016, our guest Toni Kanzler was the primary caregiver for my mom, who was diagnosed with the Alzheimer’s form of dementia. As a new caregiver, she did not know what difficulties lied ahead, nor how to navigate them. For this reason, she is passionate about helping others have greater confidence and joy in their caregiving journey. And out of that passion – another hat. Toni is the author of Life Giving Dementia Care, released in 2020 – and is now available as an audiobook narrated by Toni herself.

Each of the 5.6 million Americans with dementia has one or more caregivers struggling to make meaning while watching their loved one’s personality vanish. The caregiver is sure to be changed―not only by the myriad tasks and responsibilities, but by the soul-searching questions: Dare, I hope? Who’s to blame? What do I do with my anger? Where’s God in this? These questions of doubt, guilt, intimacy, depression, and acceptance are ultimately questions of spirit.
Joining us today is Jean Denton. Jean is a former Joy’s House caregiver, an ordained Episcopal priest and spiritual companion with a background in nursing and public health, and the author of Walking Each Other Home: Spiritual Companionship for Dementia Caregivers.

Elderly guardianship, also known as elderly conservatorship, is a legal relationship created when a court appoints an individual to care for an elderly person who is no longer able to care for himself or herself. The appointed guardian has certain duties and responsibilities to the elderly person. Unfortunately, an elderly person may become unable to care for himself or herself. This could include the inability to remember to take necessary medications, maintain regular hygiene, or properly manage finances. In these instances, it may be in the elderly person's best interests for a court to appoint a guardian. In the case, that a family member is not able to serve as a guardian, alternative guardianship options may be needed – options like the Guardianship Program offered through Shepherd’s Center Hamilton County.
Through the Hamilton County VASIA Guardianship Program, Shepherd’s Center will serve as the court-appointed legal guardian of incapacitated adults in Hamilton County and aids those adults through trained Volunteer Advocates. The Guardianship Program promotes the dignity of a person who no longer has the capacity to make major life decisions by helping them find the least-restrictive assistance that also prioritizes their best interest, safety, and self-determination. It also provides training and support to Volunteer Advocates. Join us as we sit down with Lisa Albano, Program Director at Shephard’s Center Hamilton County to learn more about this incredible program.

Research studies show that prolonged isolation of individuals leads to depression and anxiety. The anxiety and depression increase exponentially as people enter the senior age group. To combat the epidemic of depression and anxiety among seniors, in May of 2021, the Shepherd’s Center of Hamilton County launched a Counseling Program with the goals of decreasing symptoms from mental health issues, improve quality of life, and decrease isolation.

If you are a "typical" caregiver, then you are strapped for time and under way too much stress. You don’t need a study to know that many caregivers feel financial, physical, and emotional fallout from their role.
What you need is a way to remove some of that stress – and many caregivers are turning to mindfulness and meditation to help relax the body and calm the mind. Effective techniques include body scans, breathing exercises, affirmation, and guided imagery meditations. Of course, if you are unfamiliar with these techniques, or simply unpracticed, you may not know how to get started. The good news is you can find guides for all these practices, and even some that are specifically tailored for caregivers!

Family caregivers play a crucial role in the successful healthcare transitions of the loved ones. They are uniquely capable of monitoring their loved one’s progress and spotting red-flags early on; they can also provide valuable information to physician regarding disease progression, environmental changes, and other key details. Caregivers should be treated as partners in the medical care of their loved ones. Sadly, this is not always the case. Caregivers are often not involved in discharge and care transition planning processes, and they may not be adequately educated on their loved one’s diagnosis, risk factors, or other essential information. And that failure to involve caregivers has high costs for everybody.
Today, Terri Stacy and Joy Wallsten, our producer, are joined by Regenstrief Institute Research Scientist, Dr. Kristin Levoy, who led a meta-analysis of findings from 54 studies (involving more than 31,000 individuals) confirming that caregiver engagement across healthcare transitions of chronically ill adults is instrumental in preventing rehospitalizations and holds potential for enhancing other patient outcomes.

More than 21 million people provide unpaid care for millions of people living with dementia in the U.S. With input from caregivers, researchers from Regenstrief Institute, Indiana University, the University of Wisconsin, and Purdue University are developing and testing Helping the Helpers, a user-centered, evidence-based app to support dementia caregivers as they help manage medications -- very often multiple drugs for various conditions -- of individuals who cannot do so independently.
In one of the first studies leveraging app-based information technology to help caregivers with medication management for individuals living with dementia, and with the goal of sharing their research with others who are developing or adapting technology to help caregivers, the Regenstrief, IU, Wisconsin and Purdue research scientists have published the peer-reviewed journal, Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy.

A recent study by the Alzheimer’s Society found that over half (56%) of people surveyed are put off seeking a dementia diagnosis for up to a year or more. According to the WHO 55 million people live with dementia worldwide and there are nearly 10 million new cases each year. The leading dementia charities are warning that a lack of diagnosis is denying many of these people the chance of getting the best possible treatment, information and/or support - evidence shows the earlier on you receive these, the better your chance of living well for longer. It also means that thousands of people are not being enabled to plan for the future while they still have capacity to make important decisions.
There are many things that can deter families from seeking a diagnosis, but most of them boil down to a fear of the unknown. That’s why we’re here, to make this process less mysterious, hopefully more approachable.
We are joined by an exceptional physician and longtime friend of Joy’s House, Dr. Patrick Healey. Dr. Healey is a Geriatric Medicine Specialist in Indianapolis with over 39 years of experience in the medical field. Dr. Healey brings many years of knowledge and expertise to the practice while giving quality compassionate care to his patients.

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. Historically, from 1979-2003, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. During this period, more people in this country died from extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. In 2001, 300 deaths were caused by excessive heat exposure. As caregivers it is important that understand the risks and symptoms of heat related illness and how to prevent it in those we care for.

Poop happens — to everyone. Although it's natural to flush and hit the sink without a second glance, peeking at what's in the toilet bowl can benefit your health. And chances are, there's a lot you never knew, or thought to ask, about your number two. It is what's left after your digestive system absorbs all the nutrients and fluid from your food and drinks. As such, observing the shape, texture, size, smell, color and frequency of your poop can often be a good indication of your overall digestion and health, or the digestive health of the one you’re caring for. Joining us today, we have Dr. Julie Gatza (Dr. Julie), co- founder of the Florida Wellness Institute, here to give us a crash course in Poop 101.

Stigma around dementia encompasses any negative attitude or discriminatory behavior against people living with dementia, just based on having the disease. When a disease is as prevalent as dementia, yet still poorly understood, it's easy for false beliefs to spread. Left unchallenged, these beliefs perpetuate stigmatizing attitudes against people living with dementia, reducing their quality of life. These attitudes extend to the families and caregivers of people living with dementia, affecting them as well. The unfortunate reality is that any person living with dementia is very likely to encounter stigma – even though dementia can affect anyone. No one is immune to the risks of dementia, and there is no cure or treatment that can guarantee prevention.
The Dementia Friends Indiana initiative–an outreach of Dementia Friendly America–seeks to educate communities across the state about dementia, break down the stigma surrounding dementia, and implement practical changes that make life easier to navigate for those with dementia and for their loved ones.
Indiana became the 10th state with a Dementia Friends program in 2017, starting with communities in central Indiana and in 2019, they went statewide. Here to share more, we have Melinda (Mindi) Winnie, the Dementia Programs Supervisor at CICOA.

Caregiving is one of the most important and reward rolls you can have in life, but the strain (left unmanaged) can take a heavy toll. If you are a caregiving spouse between the ages of 66 and 96 and are experiencing mental or emotional strain, you have a risk of dying that is 63 percent higher than that of people your age who are not caregivers. The combination of loss, prolonged stress, the physical demands of caregiving, and the biological vulnerabilities that come with age place you at risk for significant health problems as well as an earlier death.
However, despite these risks, family caregivers of any age are less likely than non-caregivers to practice preventive healthcare and self-care behaviors. Regardless of age, sex, and race and ethnicity, caregivers report problems attending to their own health and well-being while managing caregiving responsibilities. Caregivers report regular problems with sleep deprivation, poor eating habits, failure to exercise, failure to stay in bed when ill, and postponement of or failure to make medical appointments for themselves.
So, let’s disrupt that pattern. Today’s episode is all about caregiver self-care.

Retirement is an exciting proposition. No more early morning wake-up calls or long days plowing through a stressful workload. We’ve all dreamt of having the free time to do as we wish. Unfortunately, that sweet dream can sour quickly. All that free time can turn into long, unproductive days, weeks, and years that can be rife with boredom and uncertainty. Even empty nesting can have this effect.
It is important for seniors to find meaningful and engaging things to do with their time, and volunteering is an excellent option. Volunteering among seniors has been linked to improved quality of life, stronger social networks, increased levels of physical activity, and lower mortality rates.
Volunteering can be an important contributor to the well-being of seniors, their families, and communities and can improve wellbeing. But how do you get connected to a volunteer program that works for you?

Structured family caregiving is one way for states to handle the needs of an aging population that’s growing rapidly and living longer. It is a government program that empowers caregivers to care for seniors and those with disabilities who wish to remain at home, or in the home of an approved caregiver, rather than become institutionalized into a nursing home.
Indiana launched its pilot project in 2013. Now statewide, it helps more than 4,000 families and saves the state roughly $2,000 per person, per month, compared with institutional care.
While this program is growing in popularity in Indiana and in several other states such as California, New Jersey, New York, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii, there are still many who do not know how these programs function, or how to access them when needed. That’s why this week’s guest is Nicole Neulieb, the Structured Family Care Director at Healing Hands to help us sort that all out.

June 26th – this coming Monday – marks the anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case, Obergefell v Hodges, which made same-sex marriage legal in all 50 US states. Some may know – and some may not – that the man that filed the lawsuit, Jim Obergefell, was a same-sex caregiver who was denied the right to legally marry his love and partner before he passed from ALS in 2013.
We would like to take this anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate the progress that has been made while spreading awareness about the unique, and ongoing struggles faced by the LGBT community regarding caregiving.

One of the keys to caring for our aging loved ones is understanding the things that worry them. Older adults may not feel comfortable raising these concerns with others, especially the younger members of their family. Therefore, it is important that friends, family, and caregivers have enough awareness to thoughtfully open the conversation, and work collaboratively to address these common concerns. It is equally important, that those that are aging, know that they are not alone in their concerns. For this reason, Tina and Terri, have set aside this week’s episode to have a frank discussion about the fears of aging. Join us next week for part two of the conversation: The Perks of Aging.

Most older adults will consider the option of downsizing, moving to a smaller home, and selling off unneeded assets. While this process can offer benefits to seniors and to their families in the long term, the process can be stressful. Mental, emotional, physical, and legal overwhelm are not uncommon. If you find that you or your loved one, has gotten bogged down by unknowns around downsizing, you’re not alone – and this is the episode for you.

Caregiving can become so central to our lives and identities that it can be difficult to image life after. How do we transition when our loved one moves out of the home? How do we transition once they’ve passed on? Where do we find support and purpose? How do we navigate grief? Here to share her personal story, we have Jane Bentley, a former Joy’s House caregiver and dear friend.

Oral health is incredibly important to overall health. Normally the body's natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, keep bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Clinical studies have linked periodontal disease to stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and other serious health problems.
On the other hand, a healthy mouth lets people eat more easily, feel more confident about their appearance, and hopefully avoid tooth pain, tooth loss, and other health complications.
Many caregivers find themselves responsible either in part or in full for the oral health of a loved one. However, if you’ve never taken care another person’s teeth before, you might not know where to begin, but you’re not alone. Tina and Terri, have some tips for you!

Today, we are excited to welcome back Anna Howard, JD. Anna is a Partner and Managing Attorney at Severns and Howard, and elder law and estate planning firm located in Carmel, Indiana. Anna was on the show about a year ago, and she had so much good information we couldn’t pack it all into one episode. One important topic that we didn’t get to in our last interview (linked below) was the topic of personal care agreements (also known as caregiver contracts or family care agreements).
These are agreements are contracts between a family member who agrees to provide caregiver services for a disabled or aging relative and the care recipient. These agreements can offer family caregivers security, so they do not suffer undue financial consequences. At the same time, the agreement can also give the person receiving care peace of mind that they have a caring advocate to manage their needs.

The population of the United States is aging. Today, there are more than 46 million older adults aged 65 and older living in the U.S.; by 2050, that number is expected to grow to almost 90 million. Between 2020 and 2030 alone, the time the last of the baby boom cohorts reach age 65, the number of older adults is projected to increase by almost 18 million. As the number of seniors in our community increases, so does the need for reliable direct care support, that Certified Nursing Assistants and other health care aids provide. Now more than ever, we need quality training programs to both attract and equip the next generation of professional caregivers.
In today’s episode, we are joined by Sue McPherren, Program Director, from Senior1Care’s Legacy CNA Training School. This school is doing wonderful work, providing high quality, accessible, and affordable training, to prepare the direct care professionals we urgently need.

This April (Parkinson’s Awareness Month) we want to shine a spotlight on an incredible organization that helps people living with Parkinson’s and their caregivers (ie. Cornermen) fight back.
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech, and sensory function. The Parkinson’s Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. The cause is unknown and there is no cure; however, there is hope. Treatments utilizing medication and exercise can slow disease progression and greatly improve quality of life.
In this episode we are joined by Christine Timberlake, Director of Research and Innovation at Rock Steady Boxing, Inc., the first gym in the country dedicated to the fight against Parkinson’s.

This week Tina and Terri discuss how to best prepare for your doctor’s visits. In the past, the doctor typically took the lead during appointments, and patients followed along, but today, a good patient-doctor relationship looks more like a partnership. You and your doctor can – and are expected to - work as a team, along with nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers, to manage your medical problems and keep you healthy. This means asking questions if the doctor’s explanations or instructions are unclear, bringing up problems even if the doctor doesn’t ask, and letting the doctor know if you have concerns about a particular treatment or change in your daily life. Taking an active role in your health care puts the responsibility for good communication on both you and your doctor. All of this is true at any age. But, when you’re older, it becomes even more important to communicate effectively with your doctor. That’s partly because you may have more health conditions and treatments to discuss.

We have discussed on this show, the many ways that pets enrich our lives, and the ways specific benefits that the provide for the ill and aging. We have not discussed, however, how frequently seniors pet owners choose feeding their pet rather than feeding or caring for themselves. Fortunately, there is a response in motion. This December, CICOA launched a pilot program offering pet food and supplies to low-income and homebound seniors. Here to discuss this newly launched Pet Connect program, it’s origins, and aspirations, we have Tauhric Brown, President & CEO of CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions. Listen to learn more!

Today we are joined by Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, Director of Education and Social Services at the Alzheimers Foundation of America to discuss The Apartment, a model created by AFA to showcase how practical design and technology can be used to modify a home for an individual living with dementia.
Dementia-related illnesses impact the mind and affect virtually every aspect of a person’s life, including making many facets of daily living more difficult. Most residences are not built with the needs of an individual living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia-related illnesses in mind. However, almost every part of a residence can impact the quality of life for someone living with a dementia-related illness and their family care partners. Even seemingly cosmetic choices, such as wall colors, furniture patterns, and dishware, make a difference. Listen to learn more.
