In recent years It has become increasingly apparent that our organisations can't make the transition required by the fast pace of change in the world except under one condition: Change must happen through every level within the organisation almost simutlataneously.

What this comes down to is that people all know what they want the organisation to be, they also have the personal commitment to be leaders without title and personally make a difference in making it happen...

Likewise, with almost every fear, there is an implied desire. attached to it. The associated fear may be as simple as being afraid we won't get what we want/desire - it is still there. I believe that until we name that fear and come to terms with it and make peace with it we never achieve wjat we are after in a sustainable way - let's explore....

A considerable amount of my time in business has been helping individual Leaders and groups of Leaders discover what they didn't know they knew and also what they didn'r know they didn't know - tose things they believed to be true and were false. The consious mind has the ability to process about 7 pieces of informayion per minute. Our unconcious mind can process three hundred thousand pieces of information in about the same time!

Most of this vast databas of information is carried aound in our uncoscious mind, that part that 'we don't know', or the right brain, the non linier, nonverbal part of our brains. To bring spirit into an organisation requires Courage. It requires Leadership commiting to have courage to be calm amid chaos, to sustain the tension until empowered learning has happened. To maintain personal spirit, to have faith and trust in both people and the process.

Giving orders doesn't require personal courage. That's one of the reasons so many mangers, who give lip service to workers involvement, revert to old modes of working when the going gets tough...

The Power of questions may be the most underrated and overlooked leverage we have on our organisations.

It is a powerful decision making device and a powerful learning tool. It has been said by Nancy Anderson that "courage is not the absence of of fear: rather it is the ability to take action in th face of fear."

I have found that's what it's like in introducing heart/spiritual leadership within the workplace. When we recognise we don't live in 'little boxes' of work lives, community lives, lives as workers and employers and lives as parents, spouses or children. We live in one life where the same values and behaviours apply to all then we experience and inner peace. We have freedom to truly express ourselves in all avenues of our lives - our heart sings and we truly are leaders without title.....

I believe that leading a spirit-respecting workplace is easier than managing a traditional organisation - it tends to take on a life of its own.

However, at the same time, leading this kind of workplace is also harder, particularily for those of us that are compelled to control the uncontrollable. (smile).

Most of us have clear ideas about what should happen and not happen in organisations and our reponsibilites as leaders within them. These become the rules by which we do our work and simplify the workplace. It simplifies the way we do businesss by keeping everything on a superficial level.

When we choose to build a spirit-respecting and spirit-nurturing organisation, we give up the illusion of simplicity. We build an environment for courageous leadership that encompasses everyone. WE make it safe to explore, to try newthings, to stretch our creativity. Time now to explore the principles.

The tortoise represents that part of our work and professional lives that can only be accomplished with perseverance and a protective outer shell. The hare represents the fast-twitch muscles required to get out of the blocks fast, but that cannot be sustained over long periods of time. Perseverance is prominently displayed in the world of politics, business, and sports. Serena Williams once said about success, “Luck has nothing to do with it, because I have spent many, many hours, countless hours, on the court working for my one moment in time, not knowing when it would come.”

Far too many of us live in fear when it comes to our business lives. For some of us, it’s financial fear. For others, it’s emotional. No matter the source or type of fear, fear has a debilitating effect on personal and professional growth over extended periods of time. Fear can be a catalyst for action, but accelerated progress can never be made beneath the shadow of a fearful mindset.

The best way to fight fear is to identify what causes it. If you can determine the cause of fear, you can redirect it and make it less frightening for you and your team. Working with executives as a coach I have discovered eight types of fear that are most common to executives:
1. Fear of holding people accountable. 2. Fear of making mistakes. 3. Fear of leaving a job that sucks the energy out of you. 4. Fear of not being seen as smart and successful. 5. Fear of upsetting your boss or senior leaders. 6. Fear of turning away from current successes in order to have even greater success. 7. Fear of investing in one’s self. 8. Fear of making decisions.

A day doesn't go by that you don’t directly or indirectly persuade someone. You have high hopes for having people follow your lead and act in ways that foster innovation, growth, and passion.

But in everyday life, leaders are dealing with the realty that, all too often, people don’t do what they’re asked and/or behave in ways that don’t support the best interests of the customer, team, or organisation. Let's se how we navigate this in an empowering way....

I would suggest that flourishing is in short supply because of lowered standards. Customers have become accustomed to airlines and railways that regularly delay flights/trains and dismiss passenger frustration; they’ve come to expect banks and other financial institutions to be more concerned with the bank’s financial wellbeing than the customers. In many organizations the word project creates a negative response. Too many projects are
cumbersome and lumbering. They’re populated with people who view the project as a time suck and who lack creativity and enthusiasm for doing meaningful work.

Also, because they feel over scheduled, overworked, and overwhelmed, they want to check off the project team meeting on their to-do list and go back to more important work.

Let's explore what this really means from a Transformational Leadership perspective.....

When everythig is a priority, nothing is a priority

What is a priority? The word priority comes from the Anglo-Norman French word priorie, which means “elder or superior of a religious order.” A priory is a small monaster y or nunnery governed by a prior or a prioress. In today’s world, a priority is something governed by a higher order.

In this podcast I’ll make the case that your highest priorities are best derived from your purpose and promises. Doing this purposefully as opposed to accidentally is the purpose of our podcast....

Promises influence people’s behaviour in one of two ways:
1. A promise kept builds trust, respect, and credibility. 2. A promise broken does the opposite.

Broken promises not only have an impact on the task and technical aspects of work, but they also have a much greater negative impact on the relational aspects of leadership.

In order for promises to have a positive influence on other people there are three must have aspects of a promise that have to be considered. Let's explore....

What is the root of apprehension, ambiguity, and uncertainty?

At the centre of each word is fear. If I am apprehensive, I am afraid of the unknown. When ambiguity is present I am unsure of what might happen. With uncerainty, I might be afraid about what I should do next. I don’t want to fail or lose something important, so I hold back.

In each case, smart, talented, and well-meaning workers stand on the sidelines rather than running onto to pitch and 'having a go". This is a recipe for underperformance.

What is not recognised as much is that a leader’s brand can be a catalyst for transformational growth.

Designing for people is a design process that focuses on the needs and characteristics of the users or operators.

Good design takes into account how the operator is expected to interact with the workplace set up, the work equipment and how the work equipment fits into the system as a whole. As a result, facilities, hardware, systems, equipment, product tooling, materials, layout and configurations are adapted to human skills, limitations and anatomy.

The design process requires an analysis of the work tasks that operators have to carry out and the effect of any constraints that the design and its influence on the environment (e.g. noise, vibration) is likely to have on the operator’s health, safety and well-being.

These are 'leading performance indicators' that allow us to pick up through each of the channels if the organisational clues, cues, signs, and signals that we pick up are aligned and logical as opposed to misaligned, illogical or at cross purposes”?

You'e probably hearf the expression "fake it until you make it!" Yes, it can sort off work in the short term - in my expereince, not in the long term.

People waste a lot of time thinking about their body language when they should be working on how they really feel on the inside and then their body language will reflect that.

It’s tempting to pretend to yourself and to others that you’re OK. You don’t want to admit that anything is wrong because you see that as a weakness or a failing, as if going through a hard time somehow makes you less of a person.

Showing vulnerability doesn’t reveal weakness. Actually, it’s the opposite. It’s a sign of strength. You need to have a certain level of confidence to show vulnerability.

Subconscious Encoding

Consider that as humans we have two minds: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is the judge of the information that comes through the senses, dealing with one item at a time.

The subconscious mind stores memories and does not judge information at all. It simply stores it. When a person is asked a question they respond, whether the re- sponse is verbalised or not.

Just as one coin won’t make you rich, one positive change like meditating for one minute or reading one page each day is unlikely to deliver a noticeable difference. Gradually, though, as you continue to layer small changes on top of one another, the scales of life start to move.

Each improvement is like adding a grain of sand to the positive side of the scale, slowly tilting things in your favor. Eventually, if you stick with it, you hit a tipping point. Suddenly, it feels easier to stick with good habits. The weight of the system is working for you rather than against you.....

In our discussion of the 4th STEP of Behaviour Change we have covered the importance of making good habits immediately satisfying. The inversion of the 4th STEP is Make it immediately unsatisfying.

Just as we are more likely to repeat an experience when the ending is satisfying, we are also more likely to avoid an experience when the ending is painful. Pain is an effective teacher. If a failure is painful, it gets fixed. If a failure is relatively painless, it gets ignored.

The more immediate and more costly a mistake is, the faster you will learn from it. The threat of a bad review forces a plumber to be good at his job. The possibility of a customer never returning makes restaurants create good food. The cost of cutting the wrong blood vessel makes a surgeon master human anatomy and cut carefully. When the consequences are severe, people learn quickly.

No matter how consistent you are with your habits, it is inevitable that life will interrupt you at some point. Perfection is not possible. Before long, an emergency will pop up - you get sick or you have to travel for work or your family needs a little more of your time.

Making progress is satisfying, and visual measures provide clear evidence of your progress. As a result, they reinforce your behavior and add a little bit of immediate satisfaction to any activity.

Visual measurement comes in many forms: food journals, workout logs, loyalty punch cards, the progress bar on a software download, even the page numbers in a book. But perhaps the best way to measure your progress is with a habit tracker - let's explore in some more depth...

Step 4 of changing habits is that it needs to be enjoyable for it to last. Simple bits of reinforcement
like soap that smells great or toothpaste that has a refreshing minty flavour can offer the immediate pleasure we need to enjoy a habit. Change is so much easier when it gives us joy.

It is more likely we will repeat the behaviour when our expereince is satifying. Our human brain has evolved to prioritise immediate rewards over delayed ones.

Key points in helping us change our behaviours are in this i-Mind Map:

Making Good Habits Inevitable and Bad Habits Impossible

Sometimes success is less about making good habits easy and more about making bad habits harder. This is an inversion of the 2nd STEP of Behaviour Change "Make it Attractive". If you find yourself struggling to follow through on your plans make you bad habits more difficult by creating what pschologists call a commitment device.

Commitment devices are useful because they enable you to take advantage of good intentions before you can fall victim to temptatioin. For example - if you are looking to cut calories ask your server to split your meal in two and box half of it 'to go' before the meal is served...

Even when you know you should start small, it’s easy to start too big. When you dream about making a change, excitement inevitably takes over and you end up trying to do too much too soon.

The most effective way that's known to counteract this tendency is to use the Two-Minute Rule, which states, “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.” You’ll find that nearly any habit can be scaled down into a two-minute version.....

Conventional wisdom holds that motivation is the key to habit change. Maybe if you really wanted it, you’d actually do it. But the truth is, our real motivation is to be lazy and to do what is convenient.

Despite what the latest productivity best seller will tell you, this is a smart strategy, not a dumb one. Energy is precious, and the brain is wired to conserve it whenever possible. It is human nature to follow the Law of Least Effort, which states "that when deciding between two similar options, people will naturally gravitate toward the option that requires the least amount of work."

Look at the well worn path in the grass where people "cut corners' to 'save time' (smile) rather than walking on the pathway......

Making our Lives Easier

It is easy to get bogged down trying to find the optimal plan for change: the fastest way to lose weight, the best programme to build muscle, the perfect idea for a side job. We are so focused on figuring out the best approach that we never get around to taking action.

As Voltaire once wrote, “The best is the enemy of the good." This is the difference between being in motion and taking action. The two ideas sound similar, but they’re not the same. Let's explore....

This week we examine the cause of our bad habits and how to avoid them. The 'higklightd' are as follows....

The cause of our habits is the prediction that precedes them. (the 'activator') This prediction leads to a feeling. Habits are attractive when we associate them with positive feelings and unattractive when we associate them with negative ones.

When we create a motivation ritual by doing something we enjoy immediately before a difficult habit it then becomes a pleasure to do.

Let's examine this topic in more depth....

Whenever we are unsure how to act, we look to the group (the many) to guide our behaviour. We are constantly scanning our environment and wondering, “What is everyone else doing?” We check reviews on Amazon or Yelp or TripAdvisor because we want to imitate the “best” buying, eating, and travel habits....

Likewise, humans everywhere pursue power, prestige, and status. Historically, a person with greater power and status has access to more resources, worries less about survival, and proves to be a more attractive mate. Let's explore in more depth....

This week we look at culure and the role of family and friends in shaping our habits. Humans are herd animals. We want to fit in, to bond with others, and to earn the respect and approval of our peers. Such inclinations are essential to our survival. For most of our evolutionary history, our ancestors lived in tribes. Becoming separated from the tribe, or worse, being cast out—was a death sentence. “The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.

As Charles Darwin noted, “In the long history of humankind, those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.” As a result, one of the deepest human desires is to belong. And this ancient preference exerts a powerful influence on our modern behaviour.

In our 2nd STEP of ZeChange let's learn how to make a habit attractive and irresistible.
It may not be possible to transform every habit into a supernormal stimulus, we can however make any habit more enticing. To do this, we must start by understanding what a craving is and how it works. Today we begin by examining a biological signature that all habits share—the dopamine spike.

Research has shwn that when it comes to habits dopamine is released not only when we experience pleasure, but when we anticipate it. It is the anticipation of a reward, not the fulfillment of it, that gets us to take action. Our brain has far more neural circuitry allocated for wanting rewards than for liking.

As we move forward in our journey of culture and behavioural change in creating good habits lets look deeper into the secret's of self-control and review our 1st Step Principles as follows:
* The inversion of the 1st STEP of Behaviour Change is make it invisible. * Once a habit is formed, it is unlikely to be forgotten. * People with high self-control tend to spend less time in tempting situations. It’s easier to avoid temptation than resist it. * One of the most practical ways to eliminate a bad habit is to reduce exposure to the cue that causes it. Self-control is a short-term strategy, not a long-term one.

View Details

We continue our journey of looking at Step 1 in Making it obvious where we discover the motivation can be overrated at times and our environment matters more ar certain times as follows:
1. Small changes in context can lead to large changes in behaviour over time. 2. Every habit is initiated by a cue. We are more likely to notice cues that stand out. 3. Make the cues of good habits obvious in your environment. 4. Gradually, your habits become associated not with a single trigger but with the entire context surrounding the behaviour. The context becomes the cue. 5. t is easier to build new habits in a new environment because you are not fighting against old cues.

View Details

The 1st STEP of Habit Behaviour Change is make it obvious.

The two most common cues are time and location:
* Creating an implementation intention is a strategy you can use to pair a new habit with a specific time and location. * The implementation intention formula is: I will [BEHAVIOUR] at [TIME] in [LOCATION]. * Habit stacking is a strategy that you can use to pair a new habit with a current habit. * The habit stacking formula is: After [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT].

The human brain is a prediction machine. It is continuously taking in your surroundings and analyzing the information it comes across.

Whenever you experience something repeatedly your brain begins noticing what is important, sorting through the details and highlighting the relevant cues, and cataloguing that information for future use.

With enough practice, you can pick up on the cues that predict certain outcomes without consciously thinking about it. Automatically, your brain encodes the lessons learned through experience.

It gives us a way of observing the cues that creates our habits that help us change our behaviours...

View Details

A habit is a behaviour that has been repeated enough times to become automatic. The process of habit formation begins with trial and error. Whenever you encounter a new situation in life, your brain has to make a decision.

Occasionally, you stumble across a solution. You’re feeling anxious, and you discover that going for a run calms you down. You’re mentally exhausted from a long day of work, and you learn that playing video games relaxes you.

You’re exploring, exploring, exploring, and then —a 'Eureka moment' that gives a reward. After you stumble upon an unexpected reward, you alter your strategy for next time. Your brain immediately begins to catalog the events that preceded the reward. Wait a minute—that felt good. What did I do right before that?

Few things have a more impact on our life than our daily habits. However, it is likely that this time next year you'll be doing the same thing rather than something better...

It can feel difficult to to keep good habits for more than a few days, even with the most sincerest of efforts and with good motivation. Habits, like exercise, meditation, journalling and yoga are reasonable for a day ot two and then they become a hassle.

Once your habits have become established, they seem to stick around for ever - particularily the unwanted ones.

Changing our habits is challenging for two reasons:
1. We try to change the wrong things. 2. We try to change our habits in the wrong way.

Our rational mind just loves it when things get nicely wrapped in a convenient package. Our brains get a good hit of dopamine – that feel-good chemical – anytime we’re able to categorise, predict or label an experience into a rational, coherent narrative.

However, incoherent events occur in our lives all the time, and that’s hard for our logical mind to accept. If something unwanted happens to us, such as losing a job, a loved one dying, or a relationship breaking down, we may find ourselves asking the question, ‘Why did this happen?’ or ‘What did I do to deserve this?’ We also might find ourselves saying things like, ‘This just doesn’t make sense..."

The energy that flows between yin and yang is known as qi (alternatively spelt ki or chi). In Chinese and Japanese medicine, qi is believed to flow through all things, both animate and inanimate.

Although many people remain sceptical about unconventional medicine, we should remember that Eastern methods have been successfully practised for centuries.

We’re at the root of our Legendary Performance Keystone, which brings us to Impact. My Behavioural Based Safety Leadership Coching took me to travelling in India. One of my coachees shared a poem from from Rabindranath Tagore, the great poet. "When you were born you cried while the
world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die the world cries while you rejoice.”

That’s the ultimate end point of Legendary Performance, it’s less about applause, it’s less about being
liked because you can change the world, it’s less about standing ovations for the real A-Player.

In legendary performance, it’s all about impact, it’s all about creating rich streams of value for as many people as possible to impact. Impact is really contribution, you want to be so good at what you do, you want to be so great in terms of your production, you want to be so courageous and brave in terms of your mindset that when you grow up in the world everyday you do amazing things, you make lives better, you make your customers dreams come true, you are an inspirational force in the world....

Really think about this concept of a monopoly born of outright mastery. Would you like to have a monopoly on what you do? Would you like to be the only person in the world who does what you do?
That is really your opportunity.

Most people resign themselves to good enough, they say, “You know what, my work is good enough, I’m not quite average, I’m a little bit better than average, that’s good enough for me .”

for me good enough is not very good and this is the opportunity to leave average and to say, “My work is not just my job, it's my craft!"

The Legendary Keystone forms part of an Arch, part of a a framework. I want you to really think about it because it maps out how the best think. It really maps out how legendary performers construct and architect the way they live in the world. At the perimater you're going to see your story. What's your personal story. Your narrative is the lens through which you see the world. I believce you don't see the world as it is. You see the world as you are. You don't see the world as a reality, you see the world through your internal reality of your own belief system.

When you get your legendary mindset to world class your world will be okay. We often operate as victims. We blame our background, we blame our family or we blame our boss or we blame our
job or we blame our hardships or we blame the negative people around us on why our lives are not working and we are not playing at legendary performance. We blame the world for our lack of financial prosperity. We blame the people around us because we're not in epic health. We blame our parents because we are not playing in the rare air of outright world class.

Now we step proudly towards our goals....

Society suggests that these people have this natural talent that you just don't have, that these people have gifts that they were born into. That is such a lie. I know that's a strong word but it's a lie. It is a Myth of Genius.

Focus: know where you're going.

All too often we think success is complicated. And yet the more I work with the greatest people in business and in life I realize that they are using very simple practices but that they execute around these principles religiously. One of the most important of these fundamentals is that they are meticulous about protecting their time.

The first step in protecting your time is to know where you are going. Knowing your
destination increases your focus. Knowing your destination allows you to make wiser
choices. Knowing your destination saves you precious time and energy....

How do some people craft extraordinary lives, while so many of us with equally powerful gifts squander our lives? It comes down to how we manage our time. I have had the
privilege as an executive coach of working with some of the most successful people in the world. One of the core traits of greatness that each one of them possesses is an incredible respect for time.

Let me put it this way. They jealously guard their time. They protect their hours. They are so focused on getting the most out of every day that many of them get more done in a month than the average person gets done in a year, two years or even a lifetime.

IMPACT
It’s now time to make some impact on your opportunity or challenge.
There are two stages to this:
1. Deciding which idea has the highest zest factor – excitement, passion and the potential to create magic.
2. Making it happen.
The process of deciding can in itself be an incredibly informative exercise.
Before getting stuck in, take a deep breath and notice how you feel.
* Nervous? * Excited? * Hungry? * Confused?

Worry not, all is safe and well.

Getting it right or wrong? Some people avoid this moment as if it were a meeting with the Grim Reaper himself! By making a decision and making a commitment to do something, they worry that they may have got it wrong. They think that if they get it wrong, their life is ruined. Their friends will excommunicate them, their career is over and they will die alone at the side of teh road.

You may laugh, but you would be surprised how often people whip themselves into such a frenzy about the possibility of making a mistake that their busy protective minds start to make this kind of misinformation up. But here’s the news ... There is no right or wrong.....

When you have done the Insight Exercises in the previous Podcast, you will have a clearer view as to what the specific issue is that you want to crack. Although this may change as you have ideas and ponder it further, for the moment write it down and put it up on your wall. Now you know what you’re going for!

As we mature and enjoy rich experiences in our lives, our brains become more programmed with past
experience and consequently we find it harder to have new and different ideas. To break out of this backwards thinking we need to stimulate our imagination.

While there are thousands of types of stimulus, they can be grouped under five
main principles:
1. Re-expression
2. Related worlds
3. Revolution
4. Random links
5. Relax

Insights: What is our Opportunity...

Usually when a business comes to us at the What If! stage for creative help, they come with a specific challenge or opportunity they want to solve. They have spent time evaluating the issue and believe that it would really make a big difference to the business if some innovative magic could open up the opportunity.

We spend time together with the clients really getting to understand what the opportunity looks, sounds and feels like - why it could be rich and rewarding, what the future could look like, what impact it could make on people’s lives. It can take weeks to thoroughly explore what the opportunity could be.By the end of that process the world looks very different. We have insight into the reality of the opportunity that has opened up and have some understanding of how the goal might be achieved.

We say ‘might’ because you are never really sure until you jump in. There are largely two starting points:
1. You know what your opportunity is.
2. You need to explore a whole load more to understand the nature of that opportunity.

No matter how clear the opportunity may appear initially, it is vital to invest some time really exploring it before diving into solutions. Things are not always as they seem. All too often people invent fabulous solutions to the wrong issue.

Finding the Flow
Being in a Creative State is often referred to as being in Flow. When we are ‘in state’ we may be totally unaware of it because it feels so natural and easy.

Our conscious brain becomes less dominant so we become less consciously aware – more in Flow, more "in the zone. This is the State that is ideal for being insightful and having ideas. We occupy many states through the course of an average day. Our state changes with every change of stimulus from outside of us and inside – what we are thinking or imagining. Most of our time we are in a Coping State. It’s not a stuck, negative state but it is by no means a positive one. But if you are to have
amazing ideas and come up with inspiring possibilities, you have to be in that fabulous Positive Creative State.

The trick is to become more aware of your state and then do all you can to make
it positive.

We all have intuition, but some people use it better than others. These include the world’s most creative people, such as inventors, artists, leaders, sports people, politicians, teachers, explorers, actors, spacemen, circus acts, doctors, engineers, musicians, mime artists… all these are people who listen to their intuition. It doesn’t rule them, it just gives them another perspective.

To become more intuitive you just have to listen more. When we are rushing around doing 100 things at the same time, our sensitivity decreases. We focus upon the job in hand until it’s done, often ignoring our owm needs and well-being. Increasing our sensory acuity helps us listen to what our intuition is telling us.

The human race has developed through creativity. Creativity in its broadest sense is simply doing something new and different that creates some benefit.

Without it we would all still be scavenging for food, with no tools to make clothes and build things. Those facilities central to our lives such as air travel, the internet and credit cards would be just distant dreams. The most significant advances in health care, education and agriculture are as a result of creativity. Creativity makes us bigger, it moves us on.

Creativity gives us choice, helps innovate new ways of doing things, gives us hope that in some way we can be special, we can be ourselves, we can create our own futures.

I have found that Nature can give us many insights into Life. Particularliy in Problem/Challenge solving - they can be used as metaphors (a symbol) to help us get a deeper understanding of our world, our Landscape.

I find gardening can be used as a metaphor. For example, you could say, metaphorically, a car mechanic's workshop may need pruning, weeding, mowing, watering, dead heading and composting... That could transpose into the following questions:
* How many parts suppliers are like that tree who's roots are undermining the foundations of the house? * What types of cars thrive in this environment? * Who's in charge of the tool shed - keeping the tools sharpened?

An overview of the process is as follows:
1. Anchor a positive Zelandscape - to give us an 'anchor' to feel safe and happy. 2. Determing the current challenge you'd like some insights on. 3. Pick a saying that best reflects it. 4. Put the real life situation on 'the back burner'. 5. Explore the metaphorical landscape as you walk in Nature. 6. Revisit the original challenge - notice what you notice, see, hear, feel and smell it. 7. With these insights "Step Forward" in confidence with your action plan.

Let's go for a wee walk....

They live the easy They spend the best hours of their days watching television in a subdivision, and they are seduced into thinking by avoiding what’s hard and by avoiding what’s frightening, they’re living good lives.

I invite you to really think about this idea, that the seduction of safety is always more brutal and more dangerous than the illusion of discomfort. What I’m really suggesting, is playing the safe game is really a recipe for heartbreak.
If you want to be a game-changer, go to the places that frighten you. If you want to be a game-changer, understand that on the other side of your fear lives your bravery. Always be daring. Do the difficult project. Go to the places that terrify you for there is where your growth lives....

"Leadership is the capacity of a human community to shape its future” as described by Peter Senge. Then anyone who takes responsibility for playing their part in creating a resilient future-fit organization is contributing to Leadership

So how can we play our own part most effectively?

By cultivating a 2D3D mindset is a pivotal place to start with.

An individual with a 2D3D mindset operates in line with a fundamental overlooked truth about human perception - that none of us ever sees the whole picture in any situation. WE have "blind spots". (Johari Window)

We each come at things from our own particular angle, bringing our unique, individual, diverse, but inevitably partial perspective to situations.

It’s from these diverse perspectives that the innovation, agility, and resilience characteristics of future-fit organizations emerge, enabling them to thrive in an increasingly uncertain and unpredictable world.

Widespread adoption of 2D3D mindsets enables sense making, decision making & action taking ti become more joined-up, iterated, embedded and distributed throughout an organization.

The most systemic contribution to a resilient future-fit organization you can make to shaping a bright future for yourself and the organization you work for is to adopt a 2D3D mindset, enact it in your actions and interactions, and by example encourage others to do so...

This week we are "going with the flow" and embracing our zest, our energy towards our goal(s). Last week we explored being Stuck - "clearing the blocks" and releasing the barriers to enable us to get back on track.

Going with the flow is a little different. Going with the flow is not generally seen as a problem. In some ways that is our objective - to go with the flow at all times, making decisions that further support our heading in that direction.

The challenge is that many of us "going with the flow" and still end up in a rut, get bogged down or find a 'dead -end'....

We're thinking metaphorically - using our intuition to guide us as we follow the river flow to reach the freedom of the ocean, regularly "checking-in" to ensure we follow our primary route....

Let's explore in more depth.

Being Stuck - at times in our lives we can find ourselves having a feeling of being "Stuck", unable to move, unable to make a decision. It's a bit like being stuck in sand or mud - difficult to make the next step.

Words are so powerful, how about 're-framing', re-naming our situation and see what that sounds, feels and looks like. What does, instead of being stuck, saying I am uncertain about my next move? That implies there is a next move, I just haven't found it yet!

I have found that being in harmony with nature can help us "find our next move" - it can be used as a metaphor:
Making mountains out of molehills
Stuck in a rut
Can't see the wood for the trees
Head in the sand
Out on a limb
Treading water
Missing the tide..

When we pick a situation that needs some clarity we can walk in nature and "look for options" that can help us pull our feet from the sand/mud which can lead to opportunities.

It's about:
Knowing where you want to get to
Know where you are
Understand what may be stopping you
Plot a route
Take action

It's a bit like:
Finding a rut, or standing in mud
Stand in the rut/mud
Step out of the rut
Notice what you notice about the situation - what does it sound, look and feel like?
Be surprised on what you discover...

Let's walk in harmony on a short journey of discovery...

Then it's your opportunity to stride solo with joy and a "spring in your step".

Going nowhere doesn't mean you have no future. It does mean you live in the present, as you do, you become more present with others, and therefore a powerful presence for others. You are being an authentic Heart Leader living in the NOW.

Globally, many organizations are managed largely from an unacknowledged and unspoken fear. This fear is non conducive to bringing forth our spirit to its full glory to guide our organizations, our communities and those within them to be their very best.

To be our very best requires us to take the path of Courage. To be our very best requires us to try new things, to transform and challenge our behaviors and beliefs from our old ways of thinking.

It demand moving forward when we know we are on the correct course even though we may not exactly know what lies ahead. Being our very best invites us to accept riskas part of life that can energize us rather than paralyze us.

When we choose to lead a spirit-respecting organisation, our first job is to learn To BE a leader. Regardless of where we are in an orgnaisation, what our formal role may, or may not be, or where we are on the organisational chart. We are Leaders Without Title with the ability to Influence, Impact and Inspire those we come in contact with. It's removing "the game face mask" by being the people we uniquely are.

All the insights shared in these Podcasts describe the path to a way of being that grows closer and closer to our real selves. Our maturing Wonder Child shines brightly with all our natural qualities rather than wearing the masks our egos may have created to protect us on the Path of Fear. We have the Courage To BE Heart Leaders in everything we do.....

Work is a spark that bridges a critical gap. It is a gap between two essential places: the spiritual place deep within each of us that is the source of our uniqueness, our creativity, and our courage, and the rational, thinking and productive world that we live in.

Where we develop our mental and physical abilities and produce things that we need to survive. Work is the bridge that brings wholeness and balance to life. The spark that ignites and sets us on fire with passion for work and life. The workplace we create is one that not only allows, but encourages us to be wholly present in our work, with passion in all aspects of our lives.

If we want to build a spirit respecting community and workplaces , the answers to these questions inevitably lead us to transform the role of the executive leader. We shift our thinking from focusing on the product, the task, or the tangible outcome to being in service of those who make the product, perform the task, or produce the tangible outcome.

We shift from being responsible for the production on one million widgets generating a multi million dollar/pound profit to being in service of those who do.

We shift our role from sustaining a system to being in service of the vision.

Heart Leaders have the consciousness, the commitment and the courage to see what they envision become a reality!

When our organizations choose to lead from the heart in the Path of Courage and build self-respecting communities/workplaces, there are also prices to pay as well as the rewards to reap.

We choose to:
Give up being driven by events and accept being guided by our vision and values.
Give up money today to invest in our guiding principles.
Give up our negative beliefs in our people and accept our role in creating circumstances and outcomes.
Give up our need to control people and outcomes and empower others.....

What is the Cost?
The ability to lead from the heart and live from spirit is the result of choosing to live consciously. Being committed to living consciously in a society that largely muddles through on autopilot isn't easy.

There is a price to pay for choosing to live consciously, and sometime it's a hefty price tag.
Our Wonder Child was born with spirit, and living from spirit is free... from birth before all the insulating walls, roadblocks, coping strategies are set in place. The price to be paid for returning to the Wonder Child spirit is the price of personal restoration.

Fear is going to be there; if we are to grow and learn as individuals, as organisations, as communities, it is essential to accept its presence.

On the path of Courage, Heart Leaders consciously acknowledge fear as a warning sign for what is a caution, not a stop sign. When we are able to look at fear consciously, we can talk about whether our fear is rational. When fear is rational, we can exercise caution and prudence merited by the situation.; when we are in denial of fear we often can't act prudently.

Acknowledging fear allows us to examine possible outcomes and discuss how we can turn each scenario into a winning situation.

If we wait until something is absolutely safe, we do nothing. safety in decision making is only an illusion.

The safety that most organizations seek in rules can be accomplished more simply by accountability, accepting the organization's role in creating its problems - practicing prudence and good judgement that is achieved by organizational learning.

View Details

Why live by these rules anyway?

When we are being our fear we need crutches to lean on to ensure us we will survive and protect what we've come to believe must be protected. our rules enable a set of strategies which we use to psychologically delude ourselves into thinking we are secure.

Perfectionism, self-judgement, judgement of others, righteousness, cynicism and resentment are all fostered by our rules. They are so much of us on the Path of Fear that we are not even conscious of them, yet they have licked our behaviors into permanent unquestionable autopilot....

Avoiding Fear creates what we Fear the Most. Many believe that all human behaviour is motivated either by fear or desire. As I've said previously, I believe that fear and desire are almost always related. With almost every fear, there is an implied desire.

Attached to virtually every desire there is an associated fear. I believe that until we name the associated fear and make peace with it, we never achieve what we desire in a sustainable way.

Often, when it's unnamed, fear actually causes us to create what we fear. The truth is that over attachment to any end, whether it's getting what we desire or avoiding what we fear, takes us from a place of spirit where we live consciously and are able to open ourselves to new possibilities. Either fear or desire can cause us to leave "our river of peace".

Making friends with the dark side. All that we have to accept about ourselves isn't just love and beauty. In each of us is a dark side. Fear, Righteousness, Judgement, Perfectionism, Resentment, Confusion, Regret, Blaming, Guilt, Cynicism, Worry, Control mania, Arrogance, Victim-hood, Greed...

Just as all the good qualities we see in others are a reflection of those positive qualities in us, all the things we dislike about others are reflections of those qualities in ourselves. All of these are part of me. All of these qualities are part of you. We can recognize those qualities in others only in the mirrored reflection of ourselves....

Love ourselves? Accept Ourselves? Be kind and peaceful with ourselves? Starting our spirituality with loving ourselves is difficult.

There we stand alone and naked with no one to blame or lean on. Until e love ourselves, we always depend on others to love us, to give us approval, and to give us positive feedback.. We are forever drawn from our spiritual centre by the desire to please others or by the fear of not pleasing them.

What does it mean to love myself?

Peace is an essential part of our spirits. When we live and lead on the Path of Courage, we come to know a deep level of peace that pervades our whole being.

We may still be afraid, angry, frustrated, or irritated at at event of the day, but guiding us like a rudder is a deep sense of peace that tell us we are on the right track.

This peace is generated by a a spiritual connection made possible by self-awareness and conscious living.

For most of us, going mindlessly through the day on autopilot is so habitual that it takes a lot of practice to being truly present.

Millions of hours are wasted each year in organizations with CYA (Covering Yous Ass). memos that rehash how we handled the past or aim to control the future. yet people regularly relate how their best management performances come when they are focused on being completely present in the present..

When leaders have self trust and faith in their ability to handle whatever develops, somehow the answer they need to know emerges.

View Details

When we are not present and when we are not aware, we also loose connection. When we think about something we are going to do or something we should have dome differently, we rob ourselves of the connection that allows us to build trust, faith, cooperation and community.

When we don't address and resolve conflict in a healthy way that respects everyone involved, misplaced anger almost always results. As human beings, when we keep suppressing the emotions around unresolved conflict pressure builds; over time we become more and more volatile. Eventually a mere spark in the area of our resentment can set off a raging fire of anger.

When we want to truly resolve conflicts so that relationships improve and people work together in a mutually spirit respecting way we must operate for our heart in a spiritual respecting manner.

When we connect deeply with one person or more on a deeply personal level our lives change forever. On first experiencing a deep connection I was made keenly aware on how superficial and empty most of my relationships were. I no longer wanted to live in a superficial world. I wanted deep intimate relationships, which differed from my old ways.

When we commit to creating meaningful relationships and to the learning that those relationships require, we commit to the discovery of the 'self' that we bring to it.

View Details

If we are to be completely in a relationship, we have to be whole, aware individuals who know what we feel and what we wants well as what we think, and we have to truly want to be in community with others. We have to be full and complete with ourselves. We can't come into a relationship as people who depend on others to provide approval to make them feel whole.

When we come into relationships as whole individuals committed to accepting others in our community for who they are, as they are, we are committing to the relationship rather than ourselves, without giving up on ourselves.

When we are in our brains and egos, we believe each of us is a discrete entity, separate from others with whom we live and work.

I spend a considerable amount of time in organizations helping Leaders discover what they didn't know they knew. Including those things that they believed to be true that were false.

The conscious mind has the ability to process 7 pieces of information per minute. The unconscious mind can process 300,000 in the same time. Most of this vast library of information is carried in the unconscious, that part of the brain "we don't know", or the right brain, the non linear, non verbal part of our brains. At any moment we are exposed to 2 billion pieces of information. All of this information helps us, our organizatiosn and communities discover what we don't know. Let's explore further.

We only know what we know - what we have been taught by books, by videos, by audios, by others and by our experiences. That is all we know. Or is it? Is it possible that we don't know what we believe we know? That we know what we don't know we know? Once I was sure I knew how to get ahead: get a good eduction, find a good company, work hard, do what I am told and be loyal. promotions will come, I will 'move up the ladder' and make more money as I go. I will retire with a gold watch, a good retirement and a few years to live. That is what I knew a few years ago.

How do we get in touch with Spirit, in touch with our inner self? The answer, I believe, is in being - just being., in self-knowledge, and self-awareness. It lies in listening to our inner wisdom and trusting that we "have the answers." It lies in trusting that we know "what we don't know". We understand our 'safe operating limit" from a physical and mental level. On a spiritual level it lies in giving up the past and choosing to live in the present. It lies in letting negative thoughts and judgement give way to loving and trusting thoughts. It lies in understanding what motivates our relationships and what our relationships really are. Most of all, it is in being - just being.

Seeking the Wonder Child
For most of us, our search for spiritual knowledge is rewarded over the years in 'bits and pieces'. Yet spiritual knowing is within each of us all the time: but until we have done some organized self-discovery, most of us don't know we have it. The things that touch our hearts have always touched our hearts, we may not have been aware that we were being touched.

This experience is like tuning our radio to FM 89.9 for hearing a message that is on a different frequency of 92.0. We get a message, however the isn't really connected to our heart until we tune the dial a bit more...

An important part of discovering spiritual knowledge is learning to tune in and be aware of ourselves to find our wonder child....

Heart Leadership is about learning of the heart, not of the head. Reading and listening about it doesn't bring it to the heart. We often spend years helping our heads to discover what our hearts must have known 'years ago'. Our unconsciousness has the knowledge, bit it is usually inconvenient to acknowledge that fact. This knowledge doesn't 'fit' with popular or management trends or with our personal or business lives.

So we stuff it into the backroom of our hearts: waiting for a more convenient time, then "to our horror" discover their are no convenient times - only time!

The glue that manifests itself in successful organizations is a spirit that presents itself as a positive belief in people, and a belief that the organization can handle whatever comes its way.

There is a consciousness, intentionality and commitment at living from that belief. The ingredients that engender creativity, quality, participation, leadership and health and allow an organization to flourish are those of a heart centered spiritual organization.

A heart centered spiritual practice brings us closer to out target. Without learning, spiritual practice is simply a study in failure: without learning we never draw closer to our target.

If we as Heart Leaders provide space for spirit to emerge, we need a new tool that seeks to challenge or assumptions, our creativity and our spontaneity rather than to restrict and control in order to ensure there are outcomes that are familiar and comfortable..

We need tools that help groups of people to learn and think together so that as a group they can discover things that would have been impossible to learn outside the group setting.

One such tool is that of "dialogue". This is combined with critical analysis and judgement based on independent data.

Jack paused, and suddenly felt that “Aha” moment upon him: it was the birth of his virtuoso team. We all have the ingredients for TEAM MAGIC.

Our project was “ripe” to make that alive. A powerful vision, INSPIRED people, with the COURAGE to do what it takes to make it happen. “I'm working hard; I want them to work hard to, I want this to be the best thing we've ever done!"

We've got the cream of the crop -it is like magic. I’ve got others asking to join our project -it's like a giant magnet for great talent. This is the biggest development in the North Sea for a decade and has attracted industry attention as one of the most innovative projects to date. Jack had risen early this morning and was fresh from his morning work-out. The project pace had “picked-up”. He was running things through in his “mind’s eye”. The key steps of his project management model on his internal screen – Appraise, Select, Define, Execute. Operate, Close Out. They were completing the DEFINE stage.

His mind sprung to the Hector’s insights. He had mentioned this innate quality of COURAGE previously. It would take courage to meet our stretch goals whilst living up to our ethical standards – a delicate balance of commercial and PEOPLE needs...

Hector was troubled; his new “charge” was bounding upwards and onwards at a tremendous rate. Riding on the crest of a wave. Oh, how he remembered that well. Nothing seemed impossible! Why was he troubled? It was at old gut feeling again - something wasn't ringing true. He searched his memory banks of the last few weeks since they'd been at the “Dam”. Jack's words and body language were out of ‘sync’. His words were all of the right corporate talk - the culture that “failure is not an option.” The tell-tale fumble with his pen, nervous foot tapping and forced laugh.

There was something wooden about the sincerity of his words.

“MMmmm, if I can see the ‘tell-tale’ cues then others will sense it as well.” he mumbled to himself. Jack's team are thoroughbreds and finely tuned – they’ll pickup their leader’s signals subconsciously. That's not the inspirational start he was planning for. “How have I failed him?” Hector reflected.....

“Jack I’ve a proposition for you! These words were still ringing in Jack’s ears!”

These words were still ringing in Jack’s ears as he surged along Union Street. Talk about the “wow” factor – it really felt like it. It looked as if his guardian angel was looking over his shoulder. The opportunity to be part of an international Leadership Team developing a new offshore oilfield in difficult uncharted waters was compelling – thrilling to be chosen....

The Hidden Valley Unfolds
“OK you old renegade let’s swing the lamp and wander along the Beach Boulevard – tell me more about your escapades in Tibet.”

With a fresh wind on our face and a setting sun glowing we “moseyed along the beach. Hector’s eyes glazed slightly as he transported back to Tibet.” As I mentioned, we entered this hidden Valley, a bit like the one in Glencoe and, it opened out to an abundance of “green life” which was in stark contrast to the “outer world” of wind and barren rocks with little vegetation – an oasis in the middle of somewhere ….. Jack was saying his goodbyes to the lads and lassies of Cruachan Alpha – a wee lump in his throat as he reflected on the friendships formed over the last few years… A difficult time – organizational change in a large scale. The price of a “barrel of oil” had dropped to a new low of . It was ‘change or die’. He’d to tell workmates – members of his close community/kinfolk, that they were being “retired” early. It was met, on one side with a combination of anger, fear and disbelief whilst balanced on the other with euphoria, excitement and joy of the opportunities. “Aye they’re none say fickle as folk” was ringing in his ears....

Hector’s Sojourn
Hector, with glistening eyes, explained in more detail “As we traveled a strange fleeting energy was surging through my body from time to time”, he said. “I couldn’t’ sustain it and I got frustrated and frustrated, and frust.. - being angry at myself and at others in the party. I wasn’t easy company – intolerable springs to mind.”

Reflecting, he gave a travelogue: “We landed at Kathmandu for an overnight stay before heading north to Lhasa – a bustling town full of pilgrims. Was I one?” – he mused. With “belly in mouth” we rode the turbulence and had a hard touch down at Lhasa. We were moving rapidly now – Lhasa to Shigatse for a well-deserved Transformational bath to ease my aching body and mind.....

Worry never helped anyone accomplish anything. Worry is negative and passive. That’s why, by definition, it is incapable of accomplishing anything. The only way to change anything is by a positive and active approach. Practically speaking, what that means is that the way out of worry is to transmute it into active desire for positive change.

Welcome to your Graduation - Taking Action in your 12 Dimensions of Mastery and integrating it into your extraordinary Life.

Today, I want to start with a simple, but profound question: Why do we set goals anyway?

We visualize our future and set goals so that we can take action, so that we can do something about it. Every great accomplishment was imagined before it was implemented. Thoughts become things.

Exercise:

  1. Review the most important goals in your life that you wrote down yesterday, and choose one.

  2. Take one, powerful action toward the accomplishment of that goal today.

We are getting SO close to the end.

How are you doing?  Are you up to speed?  Caught up on all Podcasts so far?

If not, can you set yourself a SMART goal to get there? Let's apply these tools right away and use them to move our lives forward.

Her are some Golden Nuggets to reflect on:

'Your ability to choose and then act is your greatest freedom, your greatest strength.'

'Great choices and actions lead to a great life and lousy choices and actions lead to a lousy life.'

'Without focused consistent action all the goal setting in the world won't get you there.'

I don't know about you but my ACTION step today will be to get those 3 sentences above  tattooed on my brain!

Who's with me?
This life is about ACTION!  Our lives are made up of the choices and actions we make.

Are your daily actions aligned with your Life Vision?

What a great reflection.   (I just put down the dark chocolate I was eating....)
Does the reality of your daily actions match your rhetoric?

Wow that is powerful stuff.  If not...then what will you do about it?

Can you take 1 ACTION step today to move towards your Life Vision?

I personally will put down my dark chocolate and finish a piece I've been writing for a local magazine.

ACTION TAKEN!  You can hold me accountable for that one.

Stop thinking, PUT down THE CHOCOLATE, or the chips, or the coffee, or the remote, and start DOING.
Let ACTION be the motor that will propel you into your ZeLife Vision.  And tell us what you're committed to doing....

Congratulations on your Graduation.

Boldly step up and Dream Dare and Dazzle your world!

This week we are going to focus on taking that amazing ZeLife Vision of yours and actually implementing it. Because no matter how good your thinking and writing was, it won't mean anything if you don't execute on those ideas and bring them into reality.

Exercise:
Review your visions across the 12 categories and  ask yourself:
1. What’s it going to take to make this happen?
2. What is the most important thing or things I need to DO to make this vision a reality?

Setting SMART goals:
SMART goals:  Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Rewarding and Time Bounded.

Goals are dreams with deadlines!
What dreams do you need to turn into SMART goals?

To get SPECIFIC around what areas we need to work on first.  All 11 categories at once can be overwhelming.

So let's narrow it down...
What areas do you need to work on FIRST?  Improving what area will help your attain your ZeLife Vision the fastest?

Is it Health and Fitness? Love Relationship? Career? Your Spiritual Life? Maybe a Character trait?

Who do you need to BECOME in order to have that life?

"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible."  ~ Tony Robbins

ZeLife Vision in the final category and is where we focus on the  important single aspect of the ZeLife programme – a singular, compelling  vision for the person you want to become and the life you want to live. Our ability to envision our future is the defining feature of our  humanity.

Exercise: Review the 11 categories that we have  examined so far, and answer two simple questions for each of them:

1.  What, exactly, do I want in this area of my life?

  1. Why do I want that?

We all know the best way to predict the future is to create it.  So don't get comfortable.  Because life begins at the END of your comfort zone.  Dream HUGE here, Dazzle the World with your awesomeness.

Do something today that your future self will thank you for.   I applaud you for getting this far.  But you didn't come this far to only come this far.  You're here to create an extraordinary future.  And there's still ACTION to take to get you there.  These last few weeks will determine who the leaders are.

If you want something you've never had, then you have to do something you've never done.  Nothing changes if you don't change anything.

So giddy up.  Let's go.  Imagine that the Universe is listening, and EVERYTHING you write in your ZeLife Vision WILL ACTUALLY COME TRUE.  Let's explore your Future Self in 5 years time!

This week we'll discuss why career is so important in our lives, not only because it makes us money, but also because it is how we spend most of our waking hours. We live in an age of unprecedented opportunity and can choose any career we want.
However, there is information overload for many of us - the paradox of choice.
A career exists to make your entire life better, not just your financial life. It all depends on your goals and what you want out of this category as well as what price you are willing to pay to get there.

No matter what level of financial or career success you have, there will always be a healthy level of stress. What matters is how much is enough for you. What price are you willing to pay in order to accomplish your goals?

Exercise for this week:

  1. Make a list of where you want to go in your career.
  2. For each item, ask yourself: What's it going to cost me to achieve this goal? Then write down the "price" you would have to pay.
  3. Ask yourself: Do I want to pay this price? If yes, write down OK next to it.

People have always had a love-hate relationship with money.  But what, exactly, is money? In this category, we will explore financial abundance and how your beliefs and your attitudes toward money and wealth will have a major impact on your financial life.

This will be a hardcore exploration with no sugar coating. As a result, this podcast will be longer than usual.

Everybody, no matter how wealthy, wants more money. It's human nature. We are wired to strive for more. But, there are two sides to every coin. This is a great metaphor for the financial category, because this category involves so much paradox and dichotomy. Today, we'll learn how and why as well as a few key strategies to having a great financial life..

One of the true secrets of life that I've found, especially for the financial category, is that happiness requires both “striving for more” with a passion that drives you forward and being immensely grateful that you absolutely have enough already.

Happiness is the main thing - it's our North Star.
This weeks' Exercise:
1. Create a gratitude practice around your current financial life. Appreciate what you already have, whether it's a little or a lot.

  1. Write in your journal everyday on what you're grateful for in your financial life.

  2. Decide: How much money is enough for me? There is no right or wrong answer, but there is a right or wrong answer for you.

Listening to the podcast with a 'relaxed mind' will enable the key principles to get a deeper understanding within your sub-consciousness and give you greater empowerment.
