They say it takes 30 days to build a habit, right? Oh contraire. I completely disagree. It depends on a lot of factors: How long you've been doing the current habit, how much you enjoy the current habit, how much you dislike the new habit, what you tell yourself about doing the new habit, what you've been taught through parents, friends, society about both the old and new habits and if you "think" about the habit for 30 days but only do the habit 20 days, how many days have you actually worked on building the new habit?
Often we can't just go through the motions and expect results. This episode will give you one piece of advice that will change how long it takes for you to build a new habit.

I am listening to an audio book right now about building your podcast and it mentioned something that I think applies to more than just the podcasting world, but to new habits in general. I am going to share that gem here with you today. It may be part of why you aren't able to stick with a new habit. Check it out!

How many times have you said (or heard) it's easier said than done? This is a true statement in many ways, but it can be used as an excuse. We have the ability to hit the manual override in our brain and not give into the survival brain trying to tell us that it is easier not to do it. We need to help our goals come to fruition and if we give into these sort of statements it can make the road so much more difficult. Habits take time to build, but what we say to ourselves, our self talk, makes a huge difference in how we feel about the tasks we're working on.

Anxiety can be debilitating. It can make reaching goals feel impossible. It can make working on new habits feel hopeless. Anxiety makes everything so much more difficult. And whereas it is something we need, it is aggravating when it tries to prevent us from taking steps to be better. Things like "you'll just fail again" or "you'll look like an idiot going to the gym like that" can cause the survival part of the brain to activate making it very difficult to do what we so badly want to do. There are a few things you can do to break free from this prison, however and today's episode will give you a few tips.

It is not easy to stay motivated and focused on your goals. There are so many things that get in the way. But worst of all is ourselves. We can be our own worst enemy! Self control is not usually innate. It is something learned. When we're resisting something using self-control, we're fighting the survival part of our brain saying "I need this NOW"...kind of like a toddler. We don't give into the toddler's temper tantrums...hopefully! So why give into our own temper tantrums? Learning and using self control is not easy as it goes against survival, but we have a crap-ton of logic that we can use to help us through the difficult times. So stay tuned to this episode so you can start working on your self control today.

Sometimes when we look at people who are currently where we want to be, we think "they've always been successful" or "they've never been through something; they don't understand". Sometimes it's hard to see that the people who are doing amazing may have come from very difficult backgrounds themselves. The human brain has the capacity to overcome so much and we have the ability to hit the "reset" button or the "override" button anytime. But how often do you do that? How often do you say "I messed up but I'm starting over right now" versus "I'll try again tomorrow" or "I'm a failure". As long as you're trying, you are not a failure. In this episode I share a bit about my struggles with consistency and how my mindset varies from one thing I love to another and how that impacts my results. Mindset, the way we look at something and what we tell ourselves about that thing goes a long way to our ultimate success or failure at whatever it is we're working on.

We all fall off the wagon with our goals. Heck, I did a podcast just a couple of weeks ago because I was slipping with my podcasts. But here we are doing another one to make sure I'm using the same tools I teach you. This week I will provide a few more tips to help when you seem to be falling off the wagon and aren't sure how to get back up because your brain is telling you things like "you're a failure" "don't bother" or other unhelpful things.

Sometimes the day goes by so quickly. There's not enough time to exercise, meal prep, eat a healthy meal, meditate, do some yoga, etc. And when we do find time to do it, it's like checking a check-box. Good, exercise is done. But what benefit did you REALLY get from it? And were you compromising your form and potentially hurting yourself because you weren't focused on what you were doing? We live in a fast paced world and it is hard to slow down in a world that is moving so quickly. The thing is, every living thing needs to slow down; needs time to just be; needs time to replenish. How can you do that in such a fast paced world? Check out this episode for one simple technique!

Motivation. It is not an easy thing to maintain. We know what we need to do, but knowing what we need to do just isn't enough to ensure we take action on our goals. Many of the techniques to help with motivation are task oriented; they are left brain focused. The problem with this is it is just not enough. We need to engage our right brain as well as our left brain. Let me tell you more in this episode and help you find ways to reach your goals and the lifestyle you are looking to achieve.

Habits are the actions that play out our thoughts. Have you heard the saying “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny” by Lao Tzu?
If we want to change our habits, we have to pay attention to what we do regularly. What we do regularly is guided by what we say, which is guided by what we think. So in order to change habits, it's not enough to just focus on our actions. We have to listen to the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and make sure our thoughts are in alignment with our goals.
Check out this episode to learn more about how to change the stories we tell ourselves so we can act, talk, and think in alignment with what our lifestyle goals are.

I know one thing about you. You are human. That means you'll make mistakes. That means you'll screw up. That means you'll forget things. That means it's not always going to be easy. That means you'll get caught up in your head. That means you'll listen to your emotions instead of your logic from time to time. That means you're alive. It's easy to beat ourselves up when we don't live up to our standards or expectations. It's not as easy to let it go and be ok with not being perfect. Sometimes we have to push through and do things even when we don't want to. And sometimes we have the best intentions but it still doesn't happen. That's what happened to me over the last week. I didn't want to do my podcast, so I forced myself to. Got it onto my podcast platform, but then stopped there. Really?! So I'm putting it out this week, with a new intro as we all have best laid plans, but if we fall, we must get up. Don't give up. This episode is intended to help you when you're having a hard time motivating yourself.

Self control. We've heard it time and time again. Just use self control. Just avoid the sugar. Just get up in the morning. If it were that easy, would there be a whole sector of the health field dedicated to eating well? If it were that easy, would health coaches and exercise coaches exist? But at the same time, self control IS a thing that we all have but may not be well versed in using. So is self control BS or is it something that we can learn to harness? As humans we have a part of our brain that other creatures do not, making it possible to override the comfort of status quo and develop a new status quo. Let's learn more about all of this in today's episode and ways to strengthen the self control "muscle".

Do you ever wonder why some people seem motivated and others aren't? I wonder if we are looking at motivation all wrong. What if all of us have motivation at some points and lack it at some points. Maybe there's nothing wrong with you and we just have to look at motivation and change a bit differently.

New habits are hard enough to stick with. When our significant other isn't on the same page, it's just one more stress. Is it possible to maintain new habits if it seems like our significant other is sabotaging our efforts? Support and encouragement is helpful. Doing the opposite of that is not. But at the same time because it's an old habit, it feels good to do it and can justify not sticking with our new goals. This episode will give you a few tools to help you stay on track and not fall off the wagon when you and your significant other are not on the same page.

What we tell ourselves over and over we tend to believe. This doesn't mean it is as easy as just telling ourselves the opposite of what we're currently doing. Those stories we tell ourselves are so powerful. Our lifestyle depends on what stories we tell ourselves. A healthy lifestyle means we need to have a healthy mindset. We need to believe in ourselves and focus on what we want to achieve. Success is ours for the taking if we work on these two common myths and not get caught up in the stories we tell ourselves.

Just for today may be trademarked by Alcoholics Anonymous, but it is genius and we could all adopt this philosophy. Habits are hard to break and new ones are hard to start. We sabotage ourselves easily and frequently. But when we take time to realize that we can't change yesterday or plan every eventuality for tomorrow, we realize we only have control over ourselves right here, right now. This episode will discuss how we can incorporate this genius hack into our lives and stick with the new habits we want to form.

How many times have you tried to make a habit stick? Are you impulsive? Do you listen to your inner critic or the part of you that wants to see quick results instead of giving habits time to build? I can overanalyze and take things too literally so it took me awhile to figure out the 1% rule. If you like the concept of the 1 percent rule to create a new habit, but struggle to conceptualize it in your own routine, listen to my take on the 1% rule. It may help you get out of the paralyzing over-analysis and finally take action.

It takes a village, they say. This podcast will share a couple of books and podcasts I've read and listened to that I found helpful that I hope you will also. When creating new habits, the more we pay attention to it the better. One way to not get bored is to mix up what you're listening to and reading. Getting into a new routine takes time and the more places you get your tips from, the more likely you are to have them stick.

Staying consistent with new habits until you reach your goal is hard. Many times we look to the future instead of staying focused on the here and now. Nothing happens overnight and when we only focus on the end result, there is so much magic that is missed in the transition. Feeling excited about new habits happens when we're thinking about the outcome but often decreases when we're actually working on the habits. Take a listen to this episode for a simple, yet not necessarily easy as they don't mean the same thing, tip to enjoy being consistent with new habits and reach your goals.

This episode is one I created back in July 2021 titled How do I Adopt a Mindfulness Practice that I am republishing because mindfulness is an important component to sticking with and enjoying new habits. When we are engaged in an activity, we are not thinking about the what ifs and the self; we are thinking about what we are doing and time flies. When working on creating a new habit, we want to hit the reward center of the brain, not the survival center and mindfulness hits the reward center.

What motivates one person doesn't necessarily motivate someone else. What lights you up inside and what you are afraid of are also important things to be aware of when learning to stick with routines until they become sought after lifestyles. Creating a habit takes time, but many of us struggle with the desire for instant gratification. Present day reward over future potential reward. Absolute reward over unknown reward. Self awareness is key to successful habit creation.

Habit change is hard. We know that. There's a lot of information out there on this. The brain is hardwired to do what it currently is because it is known and therefore "safer" than doing something different and because it takes less brain power when something is on autopilot. The tools to change a habit and eat healthy, exercise more, participate in meditation, etc are pretty simple. The hard part is putting them in play long enough for the new habit to form. When we don't see a difference because of going to the gym, working out, eating better, meditating, practicing relaxation it is hard to want to continue. This episode will share three tips to provide encouragement and normalization of your experiences so you'll want to stick with the healthy eating routine, exercise plan, or other healthy habits you're trying to start and maintain.

Sometimes the way we go about what we're trying to accomplish goes against who we are at our core. It makes it very hard to stick with the habit until it feels natural. I've tried blogging and Youtubing, but couldn't stick with either. I love getting my knowledge out to the world. It took podcasting to stay consistent. It aligns with me more because I'm not stuck at a computer. I can be my authentic self inside, outside, etc. I don't have to try and be "perfect". I don't have fancy equipment and a quiet room like NPR or other gurus. If you want your habit to stick, check if it's aligned with who you truly are.

The Nature vs Nurture debate has been around forever. Most of us believe there is a combination of both. But how does that debate correlate to creating habits and reaching goals? Glad you asked. This episode discusses the role of nature and nurture in the context of creating new habits. Lifestyle changes take time to create. A lifestyle means doing activities that you've "nurtured" for a long time. That lifestyle could be a healthy lifestyle or could be an unhealthy lifestyle. Listen to this episode for a tip on how to create the lifestyle you crave!

Thoughts create our reality. What we tell ourselves will either make or break our ability to create and stick with new habits until they become routine and second nature. In this episode, I share with you an amazing poem that illustrates this concept and provide you with a challenge to implement today. If you want results, you have to put in the work. Change is hard but it is not impossible. What do you REALLY want? Let's make that happen. You can reach any goal you set for yourself. The proper mindset will only help make it easier for you!

Change is a perceived threat: loss of relaxation, loss of comfort, loss of money, loss of time, etc. Additionally, we get easily distracted with so much sensory input every minute of every day. Finally, there are so many things we need to do (or think we need to do) every day. It's hard to keep it all straight. Businesses have mottos or slogans for a reason. It helps them connect their values to your emotionality so you will remember them when it's time to buy. McDonalds: I’m lovin it. Nike: Just do it. Burger King: Have it your way. Subway: Eat fresh. Redbull: Redbull gives you wings. In a world that makes it so hard to remember everything, connecting emotion to a particular brand makes it easier for us to remember them. In the same way, when we connect our fear of change or excitement of change to the change itself, we are either less or more likely to engage in the change respectively. Routines are built on consistency. Consistency is easier when we enjoy the action we're taking. In this way our goals are met over time; never immediately like we would like. This episode will provide more insight into connecting emotion with the habit so you an stick with the new habit until it becomes a fun thing to do.

New Year's Resolutions are probably out the window by now. Statistics show that most people drop their New Year's Resolutions before February and we are in March. Inc did a study on 800 million activities and found that most people quit their resolutions by January 19! There is so much information about how to stick with goals, the one tip to sticking with a new habit, how to actually stick with new routines, etc. They are generally all right. Humans, however, struggle with change and even though the tips work, we don't fully utilize them. If someone finds a way that all humans can hack motivation instantaneously, they'll be super rich! Like many other podcasts, this one is about one thing that I've found helps most of my clients stick with their goals when they incorporate it into their daily routines.
If you like my podcasts, share them! I love sharing knowledge and what works for others because my passion is seeing others achieve goals. I find it enjoyable to solve problems keeping people stuck so they get unstuck.

We're always learning from our environment. But we're more apt to believe what we're taught first. We see this all the time in the news - when we hear something then hear something contrary to it, the first thing we heard is hard to let go of. Now take that into beliefs about success. Beliefs about who you can become. Beliefs about yourself. As kids we're taught to dream and imagine. As adults we're taught to fit in a box. Life doesn't work that way. You can be authentic to yourself and succeed at your goals. Habits take time to build. Lifestyles take "a lifetime". It's about growing and learning everyday. We have to unlearn old behavior patterns and beliefs to make room for the ones that will help us reach our goals. You can find me on Instagram at megyoung_lifestylereboot

You are who you are based on your habitual thoughts and actions of the past. Some of these thought patterns have become so ingrained they are now automatic thoughts. In the same way, you will become who you will become based on what your attitudes and actions today; what you think and do today. If you want to be more motivated, if you want to exercise more, if you want to eat healthy, if you want to take more time for self care, you have to do something different. Starting with changing your thoughts helps. You may start to run or meal prep if you force yourself to do so, but what if you make the experience interesting and fun? You're more likely to WANT to do it versus feeling like it's a chore. This episode will give you five tips to improve your thoughts so they work for you instead of against you and give you a higher chance of success with your goal. Check it out!

Setting goals is easy. Setting realistic goals is harder. Setting goals that don't make us go out of our comfort zone is easy. Sticking with goals that take us outside our comfort zone is harder. We may go into our goals with the best intentions, but our thoughts can get the best of us. Building habits is about discomfort in the short term to achieve comfort in the long term. It's about not giving into instant gratification. Determination is a feeling that comes from the thought "I can do this". Failure is a feeling that comes from "I can't do this". To live the healthy lifestyle we want, we have to manage our thoughts. Check out this episode for a really cool technique that can help whenever your thoughts are trying to prevent you from taking action on your goals.

There’s so much advice about when you “should” do certain things. Exercise first thing in the morning. Meal prep the night before (or on the weekend). But what if this doesn’t fit who you are? What if you’ve tried all the “advice” and it just isn’t working? Not everybody is a morning person and a lot of people don’t feel like they’ll be successful with their goals because of this. They just can’t find the time and think they have to forego sleep in order to do “more” and live that healthy lifestyle they crave. This just isn’t the case. You can make your internal clock wake you up at the same time every day, but if that's not what you want, why do it? This episode will help you align with your body and desires. Having the success mindset is great, but mindset alone isn't always enough. Working with your mind and body will bring you greater success. Let's dive into how.
