In this episode of the Committed Creative Podcast, I interview Ashley Matkovic, the founder of one of Perth's biggest business networking groups, Fusion Biz Co.

Ash shares her journey over the past seven years - from quitting the corporate job she hated to navigating an events business during covid.

Possibly my favourite moment from the podcast was when I asked Ash if she'd ever envisioned Fusion growing as big as it's become, only for her to answer with a resounding 'yes'.

I friggin' loved that confidence and self-belief that Ash knew she was going to create an epic community for women before she'd even done it - I believe it's this mindset that has got her so far.

In the podcast, Ash talks about:
🌸 How she started Fusion to create a space where women can have authentic conversations and connect on a deeper level.
🌸 The challenges of running a business, including feeling lonely and not having a support network, which is why Fusion is so important.
🌸 Her journey as an introvert running networking events, and how she has learned to step into her role as a leader and create a welcoming environment for others.
🌸 Why celebrating wins is important in business, as it helps to acknowledge and appreciate your achievements.
🌸 How the biggest challenge for many businesses is getting in front of more people and marketing their business effectively.
🌸 Why mindset is a major challenge for business owners, and how having a supportive community can help to shift perspectives and overcome mindset roadblocks.

If you want to learn more about Ash, check out Fusion here, and grab tickets to their Christmas do here.

This week, I deep dive into one of my favourite ways of telling brand stories - using Donald Miller's StoryBrand Framework.

The StoryBrand process is about creating clarity in messaging so that customers understand the value of what businesses offer, which ultimately leads to higher engagement and sales.

In the podcast, I summarise it for you, so you don't have to read it!

Put simply, this is what's involved:

  1. A Character: The character is your customer, not your brand. They should have a want or a need, which provides the motivation for the story.
  2. Has a Problem: Identify the problem that the customer is trying to solve. This problem is the villain in their story.
  3. And Meets a Guide: The guide is your brand. You should position your brand as the guide who has been there before and can help the hero overcome the challenges.
  4. Who Gives Them a Plan: The plan you provide is your product or service, which should offer clear steps to solve the customer's problem.
  5. Calls Them to Action: This is your compelling call to action, which should motivate the customer to engage with your plan.
  6. That Helps Them Avoid Failure: Highlight what the customer stands to lose if they don't engage with your brand or product. This is the tragic ending you're helping them avoid.
  7. And Ends in a Success: Define what success looks like for your customers. This is the happy ending they can achieve with your guidance.

Marketing expert Shannon Stone joined me on The Committed Creative podcast this week, and I was thrilled to have her on because I know how knowledgeable she is when it comes to business growth.

Shannon shared with me her journey of starting her own business after leaving a toxic relationship and finding her passion for marketing. She discusses the importance of self-trust and the need to listen to your own intuition when making decisions - something that she has improved on over the years and which has led her to great things.

The key takeaways Shannon shares include:

  • Clearing your mind and creating a quiet space to listen to your own thoughts and make decisions.
  • Personalising your marketing strategies based on the problem you solve, rather than focusing on a specific target audience.
  • Networking is a valuable tool for building connections and finding clients.
  • It's important to take the time for self-care and prioritise your mental health if you want to succeed in business.

One of my favourite quotes from Shannon during this episode was, "The more that we can trust ourselves and depend on ourselves, the more we can see our goals come into reality."

I think you'll find Shannon extremely inspiring, so I highly recommend having a listen!

So naturally, I knew I had to have her on The Committed Creative because she has a lot of wisdom to share.

During our chat, Bre emphasises the importance of mindset in achieving success and discusses how she helps women overcome their fears and limiting beliefs. She also highlights the need for authenticity and self-discovery in business and offers advice on finding one's true calling.

- How it's important to discern what beliefs and expectations are truly yours and let go of those that are not.

One of my favourite quotes from Bre during our chat was "You have to be the person who is courageous, not perfect."

This week on the podcast, I spoke with Jacinta Taylor, who is the founder of Laminated Cotton Shop, an online store selling handmade, reuasable and eco-friendly products.

Jacinta began her business nearly a decade ago after the birth of her kids. She realised that working a busy 9-to-5 corporate job as an accountant wasn't suited to motherhood and so she launched the biz despite having any prior experience in running an online shop.

Jacinta has had her ups and downs but her store has grown to servicing a number of customers Australia-wide (plus a few overseas customers too!).

In the podcast, we talk about:

  • What laminated cotton is and how it's different to many products on the Australian market.
  • How Jacinta built her online store herself and how it became a success, because she had a unique product, without any prior experience.
  • How Jacinta had only sewn as a hobby before creating her business, and how she improves her sewing skills by tapping into a network of local mums.
  • The ways in which Jacinta was required to pivot her business in order to survive during COVID.
  • The difficult staffing decisions Jacinta had to make during COVID, while living in the city that experienced the longest lockdown in the world.
  • The growth eco-friendly businesses have seen over the years, and what that's meant for Lamintated Cotton Shop.
  • How Jacinta has navigated business challenges such as rising shipping costs.

This week on the podcast, I chat with Catherine Patterson, Head of Partnerships at Carbon Positive Australia.

Carbon Positive Australia is all about planting trees to improve the biodiversity of Australia's native environment, while also offsetting the tonnes of carbon released into the atmosphere.

Sometimes as a small business, getting by on the daily can be overwhelming, let alone thinking about how we can reduce our carbon footprint as a business. Small biz owners don’t have the budgets to throw at lessening their environmental impact like many of the big corporates do.

And yet I know many of you, like myself, WANT to do more to help reduce our impact and leave a better future for our children and our children’s children.

So where do we start?

In this episode, Catherine has some great advice on how you can get started in creating a better future for the world we live in - today. No matter if your a big business or a one (wo)man band.

This week on the Committed Creative Podcast, I sat down with Nikki from Nikki C Coaching to chat about how she helps women to build confidence around their bodies.

If you feel uncomfortable when you look in the mirror, then you need to listen to this podcast. Especially if you are a mum to little girls.

In this podcast, we talk about how:

  • Nikki helps women with setting a positive mindset around their health.
  • Without the internal connection, they can’t change their habits.
  • Nikki went from high school teacher turned to qualified personal trainer and health and wellness coach.
  • She made the switch after realising she loved pastoral care and helping girls and women with their own struggles with their body image.
  • To change your mindset towards loving your body, even if you’ve been conditioned to hate it since you were born.
  • Building body confidence starts through ‘exposure therapy’ where you begin small, wearing something a little more daring or going to the beach when you wouldn’t previously, slowly building confidence.
  • The elasticity in our brain is the most malleable in the morning, which is why it’s so important to feed ourselves positive vibes through good habits early on in the day.
  • By not having easy access to simple health information can create constant overwhelm and make you feel like a failure when it comes to keeping healthy.
  • Uncovering your true why as to ‘why you want to lose weight’ or ‘improve your health and fitness’ can ensure you stay on track towards meeting your goals.
  • We can do better in making sure the young girls in our life grow up confident and resilient.
  • Working for herself enables Nikki to make a bigger impact than if she was working a 9-5, and how the fulfillness she gets from helping other women lights her up.

Have you ever thought about launching a business that doesn’t yet exist?

Tracy Murray, aka The Glasses Lady, did just that after seeing how many people felt frustrated with the glasses-buying process after their optical appointments.

As someone who is technically legally blind (thank goodness for contact lenses!) I can completely understand how they feel - I can vividly remember the difficulty of the glasses-buying process. You feel pressured to buy and you feel like you have to make the decision quickly.

Realising these pain points, Tracy decided to launch The Glasses Lady - a business focused on eyewear styling with customer glasses in one to two hours.

In this episode, we discuss how Tracy:

  • Started the business on her own after speaking to different people in the industry and doing thorough research.
  • Found her first clients.
  • Is passionate about making her customers feel excited and radiant wearing the glasses she styles - and this drives her more than the money.
  • Has partnered with the right people in the industry to make sure she delivers the right glasses for her clients.

Rebekah Lambert is the founder of Unashamedly Creative, a business helping social entrepreneurs thrive.

There are many arms to Bek’s business - content creator, social media guru, coach, and strategy and planning services.

But Rebekah is so much more than just her business. Bek runs a wildly successful Facebook group called The Freelance Jungle which is an amazing space where freelancers feel FREE to discuss the trials and tribulations of being a sole trader.

In this podcast, we talk about:

  • The need for the real-world space to feel as safe for minorities as the online space can feel.
  • Bek’s innovative methods for getting work - you NEED to hear her hilarious and super creative ways of getting eyes on her business.
  • Her involvement in community groups and the good work she does at bringing people together.
  • That if you can do something different - and even a little bit strange - you will stand out from the crowd.
  • How by proactively looking for ways to help people and giving, rather than focusing on what’s in it for you, you’re bound to get further with your business.
  • That if you take constructive criticism personally in business, you’ll struggle to thrive.
  • How freelancers need to understand their boundaries to ensure they get the most out of their work/life balance.
  • How we can reduce ableism in the workplace - which means excluding people because they have a disability, are neurodiverse, or are in some other way ‘different’.
  • How so many people become freelancers because they feel the traditional working environment is unsafe for them and makes them feel anxious.
  • How to manage clients as a freelancer.
  • How community groups can give you the chance to see how other people solve problems and make you feel as though you’re not alone - because you’re not.
  • The steps to running a successful Facebook group.

If you want to learn more about Bek, you can check her out at her website, or on Instagram, and you can join The Freelance Jungle here.

After losing two pregnancies, Kate realised something needed to change in the way she was living her life. Her high stress was impacting her lifestyle and so she decided to quit her high-powered engineering job and follow her true passions.

In this podcast we discuss:

  • Kate’s career journey - how she felt she should be an engineer because she was good at maths and science, even though she wasn’t passionate about it.
  • Why you should focus on your natural gifts because this is often where your passions lie and where your joy comes from.
  • How to encourage your own children to follow their dreams.

  • How to take the leap from full-time employment to self-employment
  • How to easily articulate what it is you do so you can sell your services with ease
  • How to choose a business coach who aligns with what you need.
  • Why in business it’s important to be completely specific in what you do so your customers can clearly understand the end result they’re going to get.
  • The reasons why people don’t buy are because they don’t understand what you’re selling, they don’t see the value, or it’s not the right time.
  • How to go within and listen to your inner guidance to help you follow the right career pathway

Karen suffered the ultimate, heartbreaking loss when her son was found dead in her garden one morning.

Experiencing this devastating loss completely changed the trajectory of Karen's life - she quit her job as a high-powered Chief Financial Officer of a publicly listed company as she began to work through her grief.

She's now a best-selling international author, having written five books on loss and life, and coaches others through their own journeys of loss.

In this podcast, we chat about:

💙 How the death of her son completely changed her life. 💙 How Karen had a baby in her teens and adopted her out, and the effect this had on her life. 💙 The 5 step process for dealing with loss.

💙 The quality of life will always come down to the quality of questions you are asking yourself on your life's journey.

💙 Acceptance is a huge part of the grief process in allowing ourselves to move forward.

💙 How your spiritual connection with the person you've lost, can help you to grieve - it's only the physical relationship has ended. The emotional and spiritual relationship will live on forever.

💙 Identifying our hopes, dreams and aspirations after the loss is important in deciding what life path you want to carve for yourself.

💙 Until we have first-hand experience, it's very difficult to understand what true grief can feel like.

💙 Avoidance tactics - such as drugs and alcohol, working too much, and over-eating, can easily creep in when we're trying to cope with grief.

💙 The biggest loss event that many of us experience in our lives is loss of identity.

💙 How uncovering who you are should be a skill we are taught in high school.

As Karen says - if you think something is missing in your life, perhaps that something is you because you have lost your identity. To learn more about Karen, check out her website.

  • Plans can change in an instant and you need to adapt.
  • You’ll have hard days when you feel completely out of your comfort zone, but you need to keep moving forward. )

This week on the podcast, Carmen speaks to Benjamyn Gardner, founder of the skincare brand AntiBeauty.

Benjamyn is an absolute trailblazer in the beauty industry and is doing things other beauty brands have never done before.

They are an advocate for the trans community, and their skincare was initially developed for people who were undergoing a transition - because the hormonal treatment affects their skin in certain ways.

After discovering a lot of beauty brands were simply lip-service for the trans community - without actually developing skincare products to help them - Benjamyn was determined to change this.

AntiBeauty has seen phenomenal success since its inception just under two years ago - winning multiple awards and being stocked by major brands including Woolworths and Westfield.

In this episode, we chat about:

  • How AntiBeauty goes above and beyond to provide the absolute best in customer service - and why this is so rare in the beauty industry.
  • Why the beauty industry has a lot to answer for, and why Benjamyn wants to make sure their brand is 100% honest in everything it does.
  • Why it's important to ignore the naysayers and stay true to your vision at all times.
  • How it's important to be extremely bold and different in order to stand out in a saturated market such as beauty.
  • Why marginalised communities are often forgotten about when it comes to beauty and why it's important to change this.
  • How AntiBeauty was stocked by major retailers.
  • The biggest struggles Benjamyn's come up against while growing their business.
  • How they overcame self-doubt to stay on track, working hard to achieve their goals.
  • How AntiBeauty is the first beauty brand to offer an exceptional refund policy if a customer isn't happy with their product (and this has only ever happened once!)

You can find AntiBeauty on their website and Instagram and Facebook.

Daniel Swanton is our guest on the Committed Creative Podcast today. He’s a web design entrepreneur who confesses that while he isn’t necessarily creative, he is good at business, and that’s what’s helped him build the highly successful EMD Design studio in Melbourne with a tight team and a core of loyal customers.

His journey from being bored and frustrated at a marketing agency to going it alone and creating his own thing is an inspiring story, which he shares with us warts and all.

But what really stands out with Daniel is his determination to find the right customers - in effect, the right audience - for his services, and then only work with them.

He did it the old-fashioned way at first, cold calling businesses who he deemed likely to need his services. And now, with good work under his belt, Daniel is the one who gets the calls!

In this podcast, we talk about:

  • How cold calling is a smart tactic for creatives

  • Why connection with the customer is paramount for creating quality work

  • How Daniel and EMD approach winning work and then delivering it

  • Why there is no right time to start a business - only the opportunity

  • How looking back, everything makes sense, even if it doesn’t at the time

  • Why patience and hard work go together to create something meaningful

  • How Daniel evolved his business and creative practises to keep growing

You can see Daniel's work with EMD Digital on Linkedin, Facebook, and Instagram.

Entrepreneur Joanne Shepherd founded her business, MummActiv after realising a gap in the market for pre and postnatal activewear.

Joanne launched her business MummActiv after her struggles with postnatal depression showed her exercise was key in improving her mental health. But she quickly noticed there weren’t any breastfeeding sport bras on the market to support her when she went for a jog. And she realised this had to change.

In this episode of The Committed Creative, I talk to Joanne about her biggest business lessons - including how she survived an expensive IP battle that went through the courts. We also talk about how Joanne - with no prior design experience - launched a fashion label that has seen success across Australia and internationally.

Joanne also offers advice on why you should embrace networking, and how finding her consistent why - that she is here first and foremost to help mums - has helped her to find success.

Ann Steer is a pastel and acrylic artist based in the northern suburbs of Perth. Alongside painting her stunning seascape artworks, she also teaches classes and sells merchandise.

In this episode of The Committed Creative, I talk to Ann about how to get clients when you’re just starting out in your business, how she’s mastered the art of pivoting in COVID to generate more revenue streams, and whether kids are more creative than adults and why.

Ann has been working on her business for more than seven years full-time, and is making much more money than she ever did in her former career as a bookkeeper. Best of all, she works from her home studio and no longer has to commute for an hour each day!
