By special request: a re-release of a sermon from earlier this year added as an epilogue to the Bible Series. This message explores the journey of faith through belief, learning, and doing…and what happens when that engine crashes on you! Reflecting on spiritual “crashes,” seasons of dryness, and the call to surrender, it invites us all to move from striving and performance toward trust, rest, and a deeper way of being with God.

In this final sermon of our Bible series, we explore how the way we imagine the end of the story shapes how we live now. Drawing on Jesus’ mission in Luke 4, the victory of the resurrection, and the promise that Christ reigns until every enemy is defeated, we hear a hopeful vision: God is not abandoning the world but renewing it. The Church is called to live out that future now, as faithful participants in God’s work of healing and reconciliation.

This week we pick up the story after Pentecost, as the Holy Spirit births the early Church and the Gospel begins to spread. We trace the big flow from Acts through the Epistles: Stephen’s martyrdom, Paul’s dramatic conversion, the Gentile controversy, and the mission that carries Jesus’ blessing to the nations. Along the way, we learn to read the Epistles as “letters from the mission field” and rediscover our calling as Christ’s ambassadors today.

This week we tackle a big Roast Pastor question: Do men rule over women? Can women lead in church? We deep-dive into three “hot” passages—1 Corinthians 11, 1 Corinthians 14, and 1 Timothy 2—and ask whether they really teach a rigid hierarchy of men over women, or something more context-specific. Along the way we explore creation, the curse, and how Christ breaks the curse to call men and women into shared ministry.

This week we move from the cross to the empty tomb, from Passover to Pentecost. We explore why the resurrection of Jesus is the centre of our faith, what it means that the risen Christ sends the Holy Spirit to us, and how that moment gives birth to a Church shaped by love, service, mercy, and reconciliation. We then consider Christ's calling to be a Church community that embodies resurrection hope in everyday life.

This week we tackle the life and death of Jesus in a single message. Starting where all four Gospels converge—at Jesus’ baptism and temptation—we explore how each Gospel highlights a different facet of Jesus' ministry and why that path leads to the cross.

This episode marks the shift from Old to New Testament as we trace the so-called “400 years of silence” from Persia to Rome, the Maccabees to Herod, and watch promises deepen rather than disappear. We explore how Israel’s hopes, factions, and fears frame the birth of Jesus. And we reflect on how Mary, Joseph, shepherds, sages, and tyrants all reveal the kingdom Jesus brings.

This is a re-recording of the sermon, as the original wasn’t captured due to a technical issue.

We pick up the Bible’s story as Israel shifts from tribal judges to kings. Meet Samuel—the last judge—and the first three kings: Saul, David, and Solomon. We trace the Abrahamic promise, the fight to hold the land, and how each king starts well yet stumbles. Through failure, consequence, and mercy, God’s covenant endures, pointing beyond David’s house to a faithful, unending kingdom.

After seventy years in Babylon, the exiles finally come home...but the home they find isn’t what they remembered. Amid joy and tears, leaders rebuild the altar, lay new foundations, and face fierce opposition. Prophets Haggai and Zechariah rekindle courage, promising a glory greater than before. As Ezra reforms faith and worship, a new identity takes shape; one that still echoes in how we understand faith today.

This week we enter the darkest chapter so far: Judah’s fall and the Babylonian exile. We trace the history that led there, then pause to hear the raw voices of suffering: Jeremiah’s Lamentations and the captives’ song in Psalm 137. Yet even here, God plants seeds of hope: Jeremiah 29’s call to build, plant, and seek the city’s good, and Lamentations 3’s quiet courage. Finally, we look to Jesus—the Man of Sorrows—who meets us in grief and leads us toward resurrection hope.

Today we turn south to Judah, where the core question is: "Where is God worshiped?" In the battle between Temple and the spread of high places, we follow reformers Hezekiah and Josiah and the tragic tipping point under Manasseh that seals judgment. Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Micah expose how false worship breeds injustice and calls God’s people back to justice, mercy, and humble obedience. We end by asking what our modern high places are today...and who we’re becoming because of what (and whom) we worship.

Due to technical issues, sermon 10 "Kings" in this series was not recorded.

After the death of Solomon the nation of Israel divides in two! In today's sermon, we focus in on the Northern Kingdom. Breaking away from the dynasty of David, we learn about their kings and the power plays—and assassinations—that runs through the history of this nation. But we mainly focus on the worship of the Golden Calf, the state religion formed in Israel. We look at the impact this worship has on the people and nation, and we hear the voices of the prophets as they critique this false worship, call the nation back to true worship, and warn of a judgement to come.

In Judges, Israel flourishes when faithful to God but falls into oppression when chasing idols. Today we track the cycle of faith to faithlessness to judgement to salvation and back to faith through the lives of the six Judges raised to save the nation. And we look at the frailty of human saviours in the light of the only one who brings lasting salvation and breaks the cycle — Jesus.

The promise of land is realised in the conquests under Joshua, as Israel takes possession of Canaan. These stories celebrate God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His word, yet they also confront us with the troubling reality of the destruction of whole peoples. As Christians today, how are we to read and wrestle with these accounts of promise and conquest?

Today we start a new series on the topic of Faith. To begin, we ask a simple but profound question: “What is Faith?” Faith is often defined by what it is not: not rational, not logical, not reasonable! But is this true? Does Biblical faith call us away from wisdom, knowledge, and understanding? And is it possible to live without faith? Some people claim they are purely rational beings without any faith, but is this even possible? And what is the truest expression of faith? Today we introduce the theme of faith by exploring these deep and important questions.

Today we celebrate Cathy’s Induction as our Pastor: Worship, Care, and Connection. After the induction, Cathy preaches a sermon based on the theme of Peter walking on the water. Cathy structures some personal reflections on her experiences of discerning the call to come to Canterbury Baptist around the theme of Peter walking the water. Peter’s heart was moved to go to Jesus as Jesus was walking across the Sea. It was Peter’s idea to walk on the water, but it was Jesus’ invitation to take that step that empowered Peter to leave the boat. God gives us vision and opportunity, but need to step out in faith—be prepared to get our feet wet—as we follow Jesus.

The Golden Rule is so simple and so clear, how can you even preach a sermon on it? “Do to others what you would have them do to you.” This sermon almost lasted only 2 minutes with the exhortation to go out and do exactly that! But, the Golden Rule is hard for us to live out not because it’s hard to understand, but because it calls from us a radical level of self-reflection and honestly about how we truly like to be treated. In this sermon we unpack how the Golden Rule challenges our heart and speaks into the very deepest parts of our being.

We commonly experience prayer as a passive exercise, sitting quietly with our eyes closed and head bowed. But Jesus teaches that prayer is active. He uses the images of “asking,” “seeking,” and “knocking” to describe the kinds of prayers He is inviting us to pray. And He does this with the assurance that we pray to a good Father, a God who knows how to give good gifts to His children. In today’s sermon we consider how we can ask, seek, and knock in prayer, the ways God gives good gifts, and how to pray when God does not answer our prayers.

One of the most unexpected qualities of Jesus’ ministry was that He wanted to keep it a secret! Our answer to every challenges is to talk, talk, talk. But Jesus would just move on to the next place, heal the next person, minister to those who reached out to him, all without fanfare. One of the pressures we put on ourselves is to take the precious work of God in our lives and thrown it around so people can miss use and mock it. We call this “witnessing.” But Jesus reminds us that we don’t need to do this. We only need to speak to those who are ready to listen.

“Don’t judge” is a comment thrown around widely. People looking to defend themselves from critique or criticism turn these words into an accusation and so become the judges of those they are accusing of judging! But is this really how Jesus meant His words to be applied? Today we look at Jesus well known words not to judge each other, we examine it not as a command but as a warning, and we learn how this relates to having a log coming out of your eye!

How we imagine our story ends will effort how we live. If we imagine that all our worldly efforts will ultimately be fruitless as God destroys all things, then we will see our efforts as largely futile. But if we see that God is working by His Spirit to restore creation, and we are invited to play our part, then our lives and our work take on a whole new meaning. Today we consider how Scripture gives us the vision of God restoring al things, and we reflect on what it means for us to enter into this work of God in our world.

Jesus calls us all to follow Him. But where does Jesus lead us? The answer is, “Into connection: connection with God and connection with our neighbours.” When the disciples followed Jesus they found themselves going into homes the rich and the poor, the powerful and the overlooked, the religious and the sinner. Jesus’ ministry centred on connecting with people where they were at. And this is how Jesus leads us today. When we follow Jesus, He connects us to people so we can show the grace of God to them.

God has called us to participate with Him in His work of mending. The world is broken in so many ways: broken people, broken relationships, broken systems, broken communities. And, we also are broken in our own way. But the very parts of us that are the most broken are exactly the parts that God is wanting to mend in us, so we can then go and mend others. In this sermon we reflect on this great “mending” calling from God.

Jesus is alive! This is the great miracle we celebrate on Easter Sunday. Jesus is Alive! And the world will never be the same again. In today’s sermon, we reflect on what it means that we live in a world where Jesus has been raised into a new and eternal life. We celebrate how this has turned our world around: instead of living in a world where death (in all its forms) has the last word in our lives, we now live in a world where Jesus has defeated death, where life follows death.

We start a new series about Jesus: who He is and why He is the Saviour of the world. But, to begin, we start back in eternity with the topic: Jesus is God our Creator. We consider what it means that God is a Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — and so God is eternally in relationship. And we wonder at the God who created the world and created us all as an act of love and from a desire to increase the circle of his eternal loving relationship. Join is in this mystery, and wonder at the amazing love of God.

How do we pray when our life falls apart? We all have seasons where our life becomes a ruin: our hopes and dreams crumble, our health gives way, relationships fall apart. Our life that was once so orderly and felt so secure has now become disheveled, uncertain, ruinous. Where is God in this season of life? Psalm 74 takes us into this experience and points us to where God connects with us in these dark and confusing experiences of life.

Rev. Natalie Dixon-Monu from Boroondara Community Outreach (BCO) joins us today. Using the story of the four men who carried their paralysed friend to Jesus, even having to dig a hole through the roof to get him to Jesus, Natalie leads us to consider how we can be such a friend to those who have needs around us. She particularly draws our attention to the needs in our own community—both from those who appear affluent and those whose needs are more open. And Natalie challenges us not to look at people with needs simply through a "deficit model"—that is, asking what their problems are and how we can fix them. Instead, she asks us to consider how we can build "assets" into people's live, assets such as "joy," and "community," and "connection."

Many of us have an equation in our mind: the more God is “good” to me, the better my life will be! God’s goodness = my well-being. Psalm 73 takes us to the sick-bed of a faithful, God honouring, man as he wrestles with why he is sick while unfaithful, even evil, people are enjoying health and success. How is this right? How is this just? If you've ever wondered why God doesn't simply make your life better, then join us we wrestle our way through Psalm 73.

2024 will be Canterbury Baptist’s last year in our current premises. 2025–26 will be a building program that will require us to vacate our building. Our conviction, though, is that this is God calling us out into our community. We anticipate new opportunities to be the light and life of Jesus through this time of change and disruption. This “Vision 2024” presentation outlines the key decisions and reflections this move requires of us and how we can prepare ourselves to follow God’s leading out into a new season as a Church.

Psalm 72 describes what a perfect king brings to the people. What would it be like to live under the leadership of someone who lived out these values? And who is the perfect ruler this Psalm is pointing us to? Join the Canterbury Baptist Congregation as we reflect together on the vision of this Psalm, on how Jesus is the perfect king, and what that means when we live the values of this king in our own lives.

Psalm 71 is the song of an older person, grey-haired and feeling their vulnerability and growing weakness. How do we face seasons of life when our life is diminished and no amount of prayer and effort can give us back what we have lost? What does faith in God look like in these seasons? The Psalmist takes us into this pain while showing how God meets us in this place.

Jesus finishes his teaching in Matthew 6 with the powerful and challenges instruction, "Do not worry." How quickly and easily worry about our physical needs can squeeze down our faith and trust in how God is calling us to live. We think God's call can be a 'zero-sum' equation—the more we give to God, the less our own needs will be met. Jesus, instead, reminds us that God cares for His creation, and even more for us as we are His children.

Jesus warns us that nobody can live a life that serves two masters. But we try to please God and live for our desires and ambitions at the same time. One of those masters will have our true devotion, and the other we will end up despising as we feel they keep getting in our way. Who is your true master? Who or what are you truly trying to please?

You travel in the direction you are looking at. Jesus draws an image for us of light coming through our eyes and bring purpose and direction to our soul. But Jesus challenges us to consider whether we are looking into the light, or whether we are looking into darkness and calling it light. We reflect on the light that floods our soul and guides our steps.

Jesus has been teaching us about three acts that show our faith in action: giving, prayer, and fasting. Today we look at fasting. Fasting is the act of voluntarily denying yourself something that gives you pleasure for a set period of time. Its main purpose is to confront ourselves with the force of our desires within us and to use this need as motivation to seek God more. But Jesus also reminds us that fasting by itself is of no spiritual benefit if it is not being done with the right motivations.

The Lord’s Prayer describes three requests that we are called to make of God. Each of these requests frames the way we live in the world and be the people God has created us to be. In this sermon, we look at each of those three requests, consider how they can be applied into our lives, and then reflect on the overall shape and purpose of the Lord’s Prayer for us today.

Jesus teaches us how to pray by giving us an example we can follow: the Lord's Prayer. This prayer starts with three insights about God that help to get our heart and our eyes in the right place before continuing on to make the three requests. In this sermon, we reflect on those three insights: what they tell us about the God we prayer to, and how the position us to connect with God and all God is doing around us.

Jesus continues to teach on ways our faith is seen in our actions. Today He introduces the second theme: prayer. Jesus reminds us that prayer is not about performance, nor is it about repeatedly telling God information He already knows, thinking that saying lots of words will bring out the result we want. Instead, prayer is about connecting to the reality that God is with us. Today we consider what it means that we pray to the God who is always with us.

Today we start a new series in Matthew 6. The big idea is that our faith is seen in our actions. But not just any actions. Jesus describes faith through the actions of giving, praying, and fasting. The first focus is on giving. Jesus challenges us to think about our true motivations when we give and to consider the place of giving in our spiritual lives.

We finished this series on SHAPE by asking the question, “What is my calling?” Most of us think the answer to this question must be a great revelation and changes the course of our life. But, in truth, God is calling each of us to be faithful to the relationships and the opportunities He has already given to us. What difference does it make if we consider our lives as God’s call on our lives?

God has gifted each of us with a particular way in which we show the life and love of God to others. The Bible gives lists of these gifts and encourages us all to understand what these are and how they work in our lives. Today, we consider the topic of “Spiritual Gifts.” We examine what they are, how they work, and what it means that God brings different gifts together in the one Church.

The first Easter Sunday was a day of great confusion for the disciples. One disciple in particular who struggled to believe the announcement that Jesus was alive was Thomas. In this sermon we imagine ourselves in Thomas’s shoes, hearing this unbelievable news and not being able to process it. We then consider what it means to doubt and the struggle faith can be for us.

On this Palm Sunday we remember Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. We reflect on the different expectations people had of Jesus and how Jesus carried the burden of knowing his true call. And we consider the expectations we have of Jesus and how our own expectations can lead us to miss Jesus' true work in our lives and neighbourhoods.

We enter this Easter Season with a focus on the Glory of Jesus as revealed in His transfiguration. This is the kind of glory we’d expect to see from God on earth and it stands as a sharp contrast to the greater glory revealed on Good Friday. We also reflect on the disciples’ instinct to want to memorialise this moment of glory and lock it in, contrasted with Jesus’ focus to come down from the mountain and continue on the path set for him to walk.

Psalm 70 is a short and memorable song that we can carry with us into our week. It restates the themes of crying out to God in times of trouble and suffering found in Psalm 69, but in a concise way. Psalm 70 has been used throughout Church history for liturgical and pastoral purposes and it contains one of the most often quoted verses in the liturgy of the Church. Join with the Canterbury Baptist Congregation as we reflect together on the ways Psalm 70 speaks to us and gives us hope in our times of trial.

Psalm 69 is the longest 'song of complaint' in the book of Psalms. It describes the experience of being in the middle of trials and troubles, of crying out to God about it, but then not receiving an immediate release. In this sermon, Ps. Stephen details the themes in this Psalm and considers these themes in light of his own experience of walking through a time of trial.

God takes responsibility for our suffering. He does not shy away or shift the blame. So how do we process that? How do we understand the significance of a God who allows suffering while declaring that He is with us in our suffering. Psalm 66 takes us into this experience.

How do we react when we are treated unfairly and spoken about unjustly? Our nature instinct is to give back hurt as much, or more, than we received. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, teaches us a better way. And it's not by being passive and 'just taking it.' Jesus teaches us active responses that address the unfairness while not increasing violence.

Jesus continues to critique the ways Religious Leaders used the Word of God. Today, Jesus challenges the idea that making vows to God allows a person to overlook the other matters in the Law. In fact, Jesus challenges us to live a life where we don't make vows but where our word can be trust.

ERRATA: In this sermon, I pronounce Hagar's names "Haggai." This error was likely triggered by having the name “Sarai” in mind when I first mentioned her, which turned “Hagar” into “Haggai.” Whenever you hear me say "Haggai," please substitute the name "Hagar."

We return to Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount and consider his comments on divorce. We then engage with Jesus' fuller teaching on this topic in Matthew 19. We contrast Jesus' different approaches depending on whether he was talking to the religious leaders or to his disciples, and we consider the larger point being made as Jesus is referencing the topic of divorce to highlight how the religious leaders have misunderstood the Law.

Paul Manning from Baptist World Aid joins us to introduce the theme of Justice and Advocacy. How is it that people who follow Jesus are called to follow Jesus into seeing more of the Kingdom of God come on earth? How is it that we can bring God's shalom to the poor and those who suffer most?  Paul offers us practical insights into these import themes.

With all the focus we have been putting on marriage and sex, it is important to acknowledge that these kinds of relationships are not experienced by everyone. Further, the Church can be a place that puts such an emphasis on being married and raising children that people who do not fit that shape can often be made to feel as if they are not truly fulfilling their life purpose before God. Kimberly Smith joins us to reflect on the Apostle Paul's statements on singleness and help us consider the experiences and opportunities those who are single have.

We return to the Sermon on the Mount and consider Jesus' words as he takes the Law "Do not commit adultery" and applies it beyond our actions into our hearts. We then consider ways having a heart of lust impacts our lives and the lives of those around us, and how it reduces us to be smaller people than we were created to be. Finally, we are challenged to find freedom in Christ and to live by the desires God gives us.

Child sex abuse in the Church and the lack of response to it is the number one topic in the minds of our neighbours, work colleagues, and non-Church friends stopping them from engaging with us. The Church’s silence and general lack of acknowledgment of the reality of what has happened is now a significant stumbling-block to our witness of the love and grace of Jesus. Today, we talk about it, learn from how we got ourselves into this situation, and consider what it might take to win back trust and credibility.
