Vernon Knight and Michael Oates share with us the journey of the Mallee Living Histories and the exciting new project they are endeavoring to achieve.
You may have already heard of, the ‘Mallee Living Histories,’ where stories are told by the elderly in our local community, and written by a team of volunteers, which Vernon has created and orchestrated. This is a big project.
This time Vernon has brought in one of the amazing writers Michael Oates, to share his experience and learnings from this very special and privileged experience that he has gained from contributing to these amazing books.
We chat this week about Volume 4, that’s being launched very soon in December 2022, and Vernon’s even bigger project of sharing these stories widely online. Find out how you can become involved too.
You can support this project by donating at kickstarter.com/projects/malleeslivinghistory/for-the-love-of-our-lived-history#

Ian Benning has been interested in flying since childhood. Flying model planes and radio control planes and visited the Sunraysia Gliding club in his teens when visiting his sister here.
When moving to Mildura 30 years ago, he joined the gliding club, and he went solo in the club Blanik training glider on his 39th flight at age 39, which was a coincidence.
Over time, Ian has been an instructor in the Sunraysia Gliding Club and is now the current club president.
He also learned to fly powered planes and even had a flying school for a few years at the aerodrome. But gliding was his main sporting interest, and he enjoyed the fellowship of the members and passing on flying skills to people who see the fascination of flying planes without engines.
The Sunraysia Gliding Club has operated on the same site since 1954 when a group of local flying enthusiasts decided to bring gliding to Mildura.
Some say it is Mildura's best kept secret. The club operates all year round but the best weather for flying are the warmer months from November to April.
Gliding is a satisfying sport and provides a gateway to flying powered aeroplanes. You can enjoy flying locally or venture cross country and obtain merit badges for various distances or you can go all out and fly in competitions.
The club has its own instructors and operates every Saturday, weather permitting.

Kosha Shanahan is the Event Coordinator and has been since 2017.
Walking Off the War Within is an event happening in Mildura on September 17. You can walk 2, 6 or 10 kms.
This event first began in 2017, as a legacy to Nathan Shanahan who walked from Mildura to Adelaide - over 10 days carrying a 25 Kilo army issued pack.
Nathan was a career fire fighter and an army veteran and diagnosed with PTSD.
The walk was his way to raise awareness of PTSD. He was passionate about sharing this message and his lived experience - especially with other men.
People supported, donated, and walked with him, and at the end of the 400 km journey he realised that he had not taken one single step alone, and he raised over $30,000, donating it to Soldier On.
Unfortunately, Nathan died by suicide in 2016 and soon after, his family and colleagues decided that we needed to get together and walk....and talk. So, the Walking Off the War Within event commenced in 2017, this has been held around Australia.
This year their committee of volunteers are hoping that the 2022 event in Mildura will attract even more people - to help break the stigma that so often keeps people silent.

Mayor Liam Wood was born and bred in Mildura and grew up on the banks of Kings Billabong.
After graduating from the Red Cliffs High School, Liam went on to study landscape architecture at RMIT University. He moved back to Mildura 13 years ago and now runs three businesses.
Liam has a keen interest in events/tourism and the small business sector which he says are vital drivers for the local economy and has dedicated significant resources and time into events and hospitality in Sunraysia for over a decade.
He is involved in many annual charity events, such as Ladies Day, which raises money for Sunraysia cancer research, as well as the ‘our walk’ event, which has raised money for several charities. He said these and other similar events raise much needed funds for local organisations which often get forgotten at State and Federal level.
Mayor Wood has committed to do as much as he can for the Sunraysia community during his term, stressing the region and its people have so much to offer and deserve strong representation from their elected leaders.
He believes Council should always conduct its business with integrity, fairness, honesty, and transparency for all.

Anthony Murphy began winemaking at Mildara Blass.
In 1988 Anthony and his brother Patrick established Trentham Estate Winery at their family’s property on the banks of the Murray River at Trentham Cliffs, NSW, near Mildura.
Trentham Estate Winery is distinctive among Australia’s notable wineries. With its outstanding wines, excellent food and a stunning natural landscape, they reflect 100 years of grape growing traditions and experience on the part of its founders, the Murphy family.
In 2006 Anthony and Pat were nominated for Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine’s prestigious Winemaker of the Year award.
Another major highlight of Anthony’s career was receiving the Trophy for Best International Shiraz at the 2008 International Wine & Spirit Competition.
Today the Estate is a well recognised establishment with an award-winning Cellar Door and Restaurant and continues to grow and produce highly commended wines.
There’s a bit of history that goes back in Anthony’s family, where they found opportunity for their family in a new land opening in New South Wales, purchasing a property 15 km’s from Mildura at Trentham Cliffs, a settlement developed after World War 2.
The Murphy Vineyards are now 60 hectares under vines of various ages, and the winemaking facility is a state-of-the-art complex handling 5000 tons of premium fruit each vintage.
Since the late 80’s, the Murphy’s have created a much-loved venue for locals and a not-to-be missed riverside destination for visitors. A consistency of quality and attention to detail has been rewarded with hundreds of wine show medals, trophies, and business awards over 30+ years.

Justin Lamattina (27) and Giac Ietto (29) are the owners of the Honey Bar & Rooftop.
Giac and Justin both started their careers in the industry at a young age DJ-ing at local 18th and 21st birthdays before eventually playing at local clubs.
From there they ran events at a couple of venues over the years, with a lot of hiccups along the road – so they say.
After running Heaven Nightclub at the Sandbar for 5 years, they were approached from the owner to buy the whole Sandbar business from him.
So in December 2021 Justin & Giac took ownership and rebranded it into Honey Bar & Rooftop.
Their vision with Honey Bar was to move from the old pub/sports bar that was previously there into a cocktail bar and restaurant with options for top quality food and drinks with lots of inspiration from the city.
They’re now 8 months in and have made a lot of changes throughout the whole venue which is now almost unrecognisable from what it was a year ago.
They recently got new kitchen equipment, including a flame grill which has given us the opportunity to make some big changes to their menu, adding a lot of flame grilled options.

Brodie and Nicholas Waters are adventurous brothers and Sunraysia’s top-level motorcycle riders.
It's fair to say that racing is in their family’s blood, as their older brother Josh, too is a multiple time Australian Superbike Champion.
In 2021 both Nicholas and Brodie finished well inside the top 10 of the Finke Dessert Race.
They have just completed the long trek to Alice Springs for the 2022 Finke Desert Race which is a very fast track of approx. 240ks each way with an overnight stay in the township of Finke. They were both favourites in this gruelling race, against the world's top motorcycle riders.
Brodie had a brilliant run - coming in fourth position. Unfortunately, Nicholas however, was not so good this year, crashing heavily at approx. the 80k mark of the track putting himself and bike out.
His internal injuries were too severe to continue, so he was brought back to the start line where Julie (his mum) took him to hospital.
He is now told to rest and getting further updated scans & tests to follow his healing process.
Both boys have been racing dirt bikes since they were 4yrs old competitively and have spent literally 3 weekends out of 4 on the road travelling this country to follow the race events until their teenage years.
Both over the years have experienced huge success with multiple Australian titles as well as State titles in four states of Vic/NSW/QLD/SA.

Pamela Quennell and partner Geoff are the owners of Coffee Que.
16 years ago, their adventure into coffee roasting began.
They have a love for really good coffee, so Geoff set about enquiring as to buying a small 250g coffee roaster and then sourced some green beans from various countries through an importer in Melbourne.
Coffee roasters, and good freshly roasted coffee was just starting to become the latest trend, particularly in Melbourne, and instant coffee from the supermarket was not the go, for the customer who had experienced freshly roasted coffee from the many cafes who had espresso machines.
After many roasts and many tastings and involving friends to do some tasting of the different coffees they roasted, they felt confident to start selling freshly roasted coffee to the public.
They started selling 15 years ago at the Mildura Field days, and then attended the Sunraysia Farmers Market, and have been attending ever since.
They buy their coffee beans in Indonesian, Guatemala, Indian Tiger, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, and Brazil.
Coffee Que are boutique coffee roasters as they don’t have a retail shop, but supply to some restaurants and cafes locally and have customers from Melbourne, Qld, and NSW that have bought Coffee Que from the market, and love it enough to have it sent through the post.

Vernon Knight discovered the joy of creative writing six or seven years ago. He is the author of “Happenstance” and “Deaths in Paradise,” and more.
His work has been widely recognised with Membership of the Order of Australia in 2002, the Tattersalls Enterprise and Achievement Award and the Centenary Medal in 2003.
Today Vernon has come to chat with us about his most recent book “From Cradle to Grave”. This is about hiking in the Tasmanian High Country when a blizzard hit Cradle Mountain.
Another project that Vernon had created, was prior to the Age Care Royal Commission when there was a growing realisation that Nursing Home care needed to be reformed.
As a retired social worker, Vernon concluded that he could enhance the wellbeing of our elderly community, by giving them the chance to share their stories.
A review undertaken by Monash Health during the first book, confirmed the benefits of this project, so Vernon was determined to keep going.
Now working on Book 4 (with all volunteer writers involved). Vernon expects to capture a total of nearly 80 stories by the end of this year.
Vernon helps other writers publish their books too. Such as “Out to Dry” by Dick Johnstone, “Rhythm and Rhyme” by Michael Oates, “The Write Time” by U3A writers, while attempting to pursue his own writing interests.

Vincent Morfuni is Chairman of the Australian Calabrese Cultural Association (ACCA).
Vincent was born in Calabria and arrived in Australia as a child.
In 2017 a group decided to found ACCA to advocate on behalf of the community, and to project a positive image of the Calabrese community.
ACCA is a not-for-profit association that is member based.
They held an international conference in Calabria in 2019 to establish cultural and commercial links between Calabria and Australia. The conference was highly successful and received media coverage from the Calabrian media.
They also planned another conference in 2020 but Covid restrictions prevented that going ahead. However, they now aim to hold another conference in 2023.
They have made submissions to the Aged Care inquiry; and established the ‘Calabrese of the year Award,’ and the program ‘Sono Calabrese’
They are also working with the University of Melbourne to establish an exchange scholarship program between the university of Calabria at Cosenza and the university of Melbourne.
The ACCA are now holding an event in Mildura to bestow the 2020 award that had to be postponed because of Covid.
They would like to have more members from Regional Victoria and ask anyone who is interested to contact them.

Katrina Lee is a local woman who started The Village Catch-Ups.
This was an initiative she began last year based on the knowledge and experience of the impact of isolation on mental health, the benefits of community, connection and being physically active as well as from a desire to help small ‘active lifestyle based' businesses.
The Village Catch-Ups focuses on making it easy for individuals or friend groups to all come together and socialise again, have the opportunity to meet new people, stretch their comfort zones, enjoy themselves and participate in physical activity that they may have been hesitant to do alone.
Also, this was an opportunity for small businesses to showcase the kind of activities they have on offer that group participants can choose to attend on a more regular basis.
The activities have ranged from once off sessions or a small 4 week offer.
The activities organised so far have been
· Flying Trapeze
· Aerial Silks, Lyra and Burlesque Dance Class
· Reformer Pilates and Yoga,
· Bollywood Dancing
· Kayaking
· And just recently the No Lights No Lycra Mildura event.
The aim is for 1-2 activities a month and there is no commitment required.
It has currently been running by Katrina who has been contacting businesses to see if they would be interested. But Katrina is also keen for businesses to contact her.
The Village Catch Ups are free of charge.

The Anzac poem byD. Hunter(A veteran of Shaggy Ridge with the 2/12 Battalion in WW2)
I saw a kid marchin’ with medals on his chest.
He marched alongside Diggers marching six abreast.
He knew that it was ANZAC Day - he walked along with pride.
He did his best to keep in step with the Diggers by his side.
And when the march was over the kid was rather tired.
A Digger said “Whose medals, son?” to which the kid replied:
“They belong to daddy, but he did not come back.
He died up in New Guinea on a lonely jungle track”.
The kid looked rather sad then and a tear came to his eye.
The Digger said “Don’t cry my son and I will tell you why.
Your daddy marched with us today - all the blooming way.
We Diggers know that he was there - it’s like that on ANZAC Day”.
The kid looked rather puzzled and didn’t understand,
But the Digger went on talking and started to wave his hand.
“For this great land we live in, there’s a price we have to pay
For we all love fun and merriment in this country where we live.
The price was that some soldier his precious life must give.
For you to go to school my lad and worship God at will,
Someone had to pay the price so the Diggers paid the bill.
Your daddy died for us my son - for all things good and true.
I wonder if you understand the things I’ve said to you”.
The kid looked up at the Digger - just for a little while
And with a changed expression, said, with a lovely smile:
“I know my dad marched here today - this is ANZAC Day.
I know he did. I know he did, all the bloomin’ way”.

Nathan Carnie is the author of Monsters of the Mallee, a true-crime series focused on suspicious deaths around the Mallee region of Victoria from 1960-to 2015. He examines 29 different cases, that contain mafia-related deaths, several unsolved mysteries, serial killers, and even cults.
Nathan’s interest in forensics began at the age of 12. He now has 2 tertiary degrees, one in forensic science and another in Science (Human Anatomy).
Monsters of the Mallee is a focus on serial killer Sandy MacRae who was convicted of 4 murders (the Marafioti family & Albert O'Hara), despite police believing he was associated with up to 10. It is however rumored throughout underworld circles that this could even amount to 28 deaths.
Detective Sergeant John Kennedy was the main local investigator on the case, who provided the actual interview of MacRae and his co-accused when she finally confessed to having assisted MacRae after the fact.
Newspaper clippings, coronial inquests, court reports, interviews with detectives and associates/family of deceased/offenders, were resources used in Nathan’s book.
Nathan’s motivation for this book is to inform locals of these suspicious deaths that have occurred in their area. Both the locations and behaviours associated with these crimes. And to potentially help reignite a memory or a piece of information that may support an unsolved crime.
He aims to create a movement in locals' thinking, making them conscious of where unknown remains are suspected, and therefore somewhat increase the potential of assisting in their discovery.

Sally Hederics grew up in Mildura, combining regular schooling with classical and contemporary dance training, before moving to Adelaide to continue her dance studies at 14 years old.
After graduating from Unley High School, from 1998 to 2000, she attended the Centre for the Performing Arts (CPA) in Adelaide, obtaining a Bachelor Degree in performance dance. During these years, through the instruction and collaboration with many of Australia’s top choreographers, she began to gain insight into the choreographic process and to develop her own style of movement. In 2004, Sally completed her Honours in dance at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. Upon completing her Honours, Sally joined the Melbourne based company Strange Fruit and spent the next 7 years performing and touring extensively around the world.

Now residing with her family in Mildura, Sally has taken a break from teaching, but continues to be a passionate advocate for professional dance and choreographic opportunities for the students and young professionals in the local area, recently choreographing a music video with a Melbourne based production company.

Tennille Chalmers grew up in the wine industry via her family’s business on a farm on the Murray River, 120km outside of Mildura. Tennille loved her childhood and the industry.
Tennille’s true passion for wine didn’t come until she began working in hospitality in her early 20’s. She quickly realised it was an exciting path to take, working in Melbourne Restaurant’s as a Sommelier with great mentors, learning about wine, hospitalities and the interwoven nature of food and wine.
Tennille did everything she could to educate herself about the industry by going to tastings, trying as many wines as she could, attending masterclasses, visiting vineyards to learn as much as possible about the world of wine.
10 years ago, Tennille moved back to Mildura to join the family business and since then has worked in all aspects of the vineyard, winery, and office. Over time she worked vintages in Australia and Italy. With a true passion for Italian wines.
Today Tennille is a Director at Chalmers, with her sister Kim, they own and manage Chalmers Wines. Along with her parents Bruce & Jenni she helps manage the vineyards and nursery areas of the company.
