Welcome to the Healing-Centered Conversations podcast! In this episode, we have a powerful discussion between Dr. Celeste Malone and Dr. Sherrie Proctor on the Juxtaposition of Black Joy and Black Trauma.
Healing is a form of resistance and in this special episode, Dr. Proctor sits down with Dr. Malone to begin the healing process. Dr. Malone describes in her own words, what happened in Denver for NASP 2023 and what she was feeling at that moment, and then reflects on the importance of mobilizing the community and the lessons learned from their response.
Dr. Malone discusses the highs and lows of her presidency as just the second Black person to ever serve in the role of President of NASP. She shares her experiences and challenges in leading a national organization and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in her work.
Importantly, listeners will hear firsthand, from two legends in the field of Schoo Psychology about their perspective on the importance of hope and healing in the face of trauma and systemic oppression.

Dr. Tai A. Collins is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the School Psychology Program at the University of Cincinnati.
About Dr. Tai Collins
Tai A. Collins received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 2013. Dr. Collins is primarily interested in the development of time- and resource-efficient behavioral interventions to support Black students in urban schools with limited resources. Dr. Collins has focused on developing peer-mediated interventions to improve the academic, behavioral, social, and emotional functioning of students within multi-tiered systems of support. Dr. Collins is also interested in applications of a social justice framework in school psychology research, practice, and training. About Dr. Nikole Hollins-Sims
Dr. Hollins-Sims is an educational equity expert. She currently serves as the Special Assistant to the Secretary of Education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Dr. Hollins-Sims previously served as an educational consultant for the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN)-Harrisburg Office, where she was the co-statewide lead for the Learning Environment & Engagement initiative. Dr. Hollins-Sims is a Pennsylvania certified school psychologist with a specific interest in social justice. She has also conducted research around caregivers of children of incarcerated parents and their motivation to engage in family-school partnerships. About Dr. Keiva BlandDr. Keiva Bland is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeon from Detroit, Michigan who practices general surgery with an emphasis on breast diseases. She attended Howard University in Washington DC for both undergraduate studies and medical school. She graduated from the College of Medicine in 2000 and went on to do her general surgery residency at Wayne State University in Detroit. Upon completion of her residency in 2006, she completed a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. She returned to Detroit to Wayne State University in 2008 as faculty and is practicing in the Detroit Medical Center and Karmanos Cancer Institute. She has book chapters, scholarly articles, and invited lectures to her credit. She is involved in outreach speaking locally for community programs, mentoring, and mission work in the Dominican Republic. She is a member of the Psi Delta Omega Chapter of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

About Dr. Blake
Dr. William Blake previously served as the Director of Social-Emotional Learning for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). In this role, Dr. Blake ensured systems and structures were in place to support the development of the whole child. He is currently the Assistant Director of School Redesign at Anacostia High School. Over the span of 15 years in urban education, Dr. Blake has served as a Classroom Teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal. Dr. Blake believes that educators must strategically focus on closing the access gap for students furthest from opportunity which is why he is dedicated to creating equitable outcomes for students especially for students of color. He is a proud HBCU grad from Morgan State University. He later attended Trinity University to earn his Master’s in Curriculum in Instruction. Lastly, he earned his Doctorate Degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He is the co-founder of the National Association of Black Male Educators and a devoted member of the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

About Dr. Rebecca Branstetter
Dr. Branstetter is a school psychologist, speaker, and author on a mission to help children be the best they can be in school and in life by supporting school psychologists, educators, and families. She is also the founder of The Thriving School Psychologist Collective, an online community dedicated to improving mental health and learning supports in public schools. She is also the co-creator of the “Make It Stick Parenting” course, which provides parents with tools. She and her husband are proud parents to two daughters and two furry husky dogs in the San Francisco Bay Area.

About Amen Rahh
Amen Rahh is known as the Revolutionary Principal for how he built and founded University Pathways Public Service Academy “The U” an urban public school in South Central Los Angeles. Principal Rahh distinguished himself in the classroom and as an educational change agent. As a middle school teacher in Watts, CA, he was selected as the turnaround teacher which ultimately helped him obtain his position as dean of students. As a principal, he founded one of the most highly-regarded schools in the area by students and parents.
Currently, Principal Rahh is one of the most engaging speakers for transforming the way schools serve their at-promise student populations in America. He is a published author of a chapter he wrote in the book titled Restorative Practices Meets Social Justice as well as his debut book Revolutionary School Culture: The 6 Principles of unlocking your School's Hidden Treasure.

About Dr. Brian McClure
Brian is the Director of the DC Council Office of Racial Equity also referred to as CORE for short. Prior to joining CORE, Brian served in several leadership capacities for Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie and the Council’s Committee on Business and Economic Development. There, he helped lead the District’s efforts to operationalize racial equity into the Council’s legislative process. He also helped provide innovative solutions to increase opportunities for the District’s small and local businesses and in particular, Black and minority-owned businesses.
Brian received his BA in History at Hampton University, an MA in History from North Carolina Central University, and his PhD in US History, African American History, and Atlantic World History from the University of Memphis. When he is not working at CORE, he can be found roaming local bookstores, somewhere in a local archive, barbecuing, or spending time with his wife and two children at their home in Ward 8.
