Faithful Justice is the place where our deepest faith commitments inspire us to seek justice for all of God’s beloved children. Join us for weekly homilies from the Rev. Dr. Brian Harrington that focus on the faith imperative to show love for God by the way that we love all of our neighbors, which includes striving for a world where everyone can experience the abundant life that Jesus promised.
The homily for the Third Sunday in Lent (March 20, 2022) entitled, “Bearing Fruit,” is based on Luke 13:1-9 and invites us to remember the infinite value of ourselves and all creation regardless of how fruitful we seem to be.
The homily for the Second Sunday in Lent (March 13, 2022) entitled, “Righteous Anger," is based on Luke 13:31-35. We hear a story that shows one way that Jesus reacted to things not being as they should be and reflect on when it is worth it to be righteously angry.
This special episode is a presentation that Brian gave for the Black Church Studies Consultation at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary on February 17, 2022. This presentation and his doctoral thesis are entitled, "Becoming Faithful to the Gospel: Leading Predominantly White Congregations in the Work of Racial Justice,” and these words summarize some of the research conducted for that project over the last few years.
The homily for the First Sunday in Lent (March 6, 2022), entitled, "The Test," is based on Luke 4:1-13, the story of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. This homily calls us to reflect on what Jesus' tests in the wilderness teach us about the ways that we are tested and how we should respond--in speech and in action.
A special edition of Faithful Justice for Ash Wednesday (March 2, 2022), featuring a homily, entitled, "A Different Lent," inspired by Joel 2:1-2, 12-17. As the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, we invite you to observe a holy Lent, preparing yourselves for our yearly remembrance of Jesus’ death and resurrection. As we turn our face toward the cross, may we, in pondering our own mortality, reflect on how to be fully human.
This week’s podcast includes a homily for Transfiguration Sunday (February 27, 2022), inspired by Luke 9:28-36 and entitled, “In the Mountain’s Shadow.” We reflect on our own mountaintop experiences and ponder how we might strive together for a future when all of us can ascend Isaiah’s envisioned “holy mountain of the Lord,” where “creation will be at peace.”
We continue reflecting on Jesus' words from the Sermon on the Plains in Luke 6 with a homily entitled, "Loving One Another." We think about what it means to love our enemies when sometimes we have a hard time loving our neighbors.
